Wow! What a Thriller! Every Second, by Rick Mofina, is a riveting mystery that had me holding my breath quite often. It is the third book in the series featuring ambitious reporter Kate Page. Terror claws into the lives of the Fulton family when they are awakened one night to masked men who force bank manager, Dan Fulton, to steal a quarter million dollars from his branch - strapping remote detonation bombs on him, his wife and their young son. Kate discovers a harrowing secret and digs deeper for answers as the FBI investigates. Time is of the essence and running out quickly as the FBI and relentless reporter Kate inch closer to the devastating truth. Every second counts in the race to save the Fulton family and thousands of others. Captivating characters in a suspenseful, fast-paced, gripping story that could be ripped from today's headlines. I highly recommend this series!
My least favourite book in the Kate Page series. I didn't like the way that the kidnapping/ransom direction went and I didn't like how Kate seemed to be working against the police, instead of with them like in previous novels.
Note if you are planning to read this series, I would suggest reading them in order. There are minor spoilers in this novel that are from the second novel, Full Tilt.
The usual suburban family wit the usual "perfect life" gets their home invaded by masked gunmen. They want the husband to rob the bank where he works of a quarter million.
Without a doubt the best book I've read from author Rick Mofina hands down. "Every Second" is a spine tingling thriller that blazes high octane action and thrills.Shocking sequence of events to open this thriller really set the pace. It's late one night at the home of Dan and Lori Fulton who live in quiet peaceful section in NYC. Home invaders make their way into the Fulton's house. Dan, Lori and young son Billy are tied up and have suicide jackets forced onto them. Dan a bank manager in mid town Manhattan is forced in the very early morning hours to arrive at his bank and steal $250K. Meanwhile Lori and Billy are kept hostage back at the Fulton home, or are they ? Dan gets creative and gets money for the bad guys although his employees know this is major violation and misstep by Dan. The FBI and NYPD are all over the case quickly. Arriving at Fulton home things are very wrong. Meanwhile Kate Page a reporter for the major newscorp "NewsLead" is alerted to heist and dives into case full steam ahead. Before long Kate discovers an angle throwing case back to a California connection. The FBI are also discovering this isn't a simple robbery/ hostage crime but a major terrorist threat. Pulling information from Harrogate, England along from Dallas, Los Angeles, and the mountainous regions of upstate New York, this thriller refuses to let up on the gas pedal. Just an incredible puzzle of parts to the whole story keep this thriller moving very quickly. With some amazingly built, developed and created characters this book is really impossible to put down. Even at 440 pages is zipped by so quickly. Enjoyable and and heart wrenching doesn't begin to describe how much I loved this book. Author Rick Mofina is hands down an amazing story teller. His ability to keep the reader just wanting to read one more chapter and then another is brilliant. I'd highly recommend "Every Second" to any mystery thriller reader who wants a crazy ride. Even though this is third book in author Mofina's Kate Page series, this one can be read as stand alone very easily. ( But do read first two books in series, they were wonderful as well.) Five stars out of a possible five stars for "Every Second". This is a book you just gotta read. Just a must.
Rick Mofina does it again, with another riveting installment in the Kate Page series. Although I'm not usually a big fan of books involving terrorist plots, this one was fascinating and very accessible, involving a small group of home-grown, self-radicalized extremists. From the very first chapter, the suspense was palpable, and through it all, I rooted hard for the family whose lives were upended by the plot to steal money from a bank and to kill them in violent fashion.
Mofina always does an excellent job of making his readers care about the characters and feel their fear. Looking forward to the next!
Dan Fulton works at a bank, his wife, Lori, works for an insurance company. They have a nine-year-old son, Billy. They moved to New York a few years earlier after Lori went through a trying time as a police officer when her partner was killed and she was forced to kill the shooter. They were doing well, putting their lives back together until one night when armed intruders break into their home, tie them up and strap bombs to them. They will detonate them if Dan doesn't do as they demand and steal a quarter of a million dollars from his bank.
Dan has no choice to agree if he hopes to keep his family alive. He manages to get a message to police and the FBI is called in. They have to begin their case under the suspicion that Dan may be behind everything although there's little evidence to convince them that's the case.
In the meantime, Kate West, a reporter, gets wind of the case and launches her own investigation. When she seems to be one step ahead of law enforcement, FBI agent, Nick Vardner, decides to work with her in order to contain the amount of information getting out to the public.
This was a nail biting thrill ride from start to finish. For one thing, Dan is separated right off the bat from Lori and Billy. So they have no idea what's going on with one another. I kept waiting for one of them to blow up. You also have no clue what the overall motive is, although at one point it appears Lori' s past is playing a major role in the plot. Then you have law enforcement hurrying yo piece together what is happening and at the heart of the story is Kate West. She's tough, she's smart, and she's been through difficult times as well so she feels for the Fultons but badly wants to be the one to break everything wide open.
The story is fast paced and kept me enthralled trying to figure it out. I didn't want to put it down. The author did a good job of capturing and holding your attention from page one. Would definitely recommend!
It is seconds that can change a marriage, a life, and a death
It takes seconds to make life changing decisions. When the Fulton household is taken over by ruthless men, they must learn to trust each other. Dan Fulton is forced with a bomb vest attached to rob the bank he manages of $250,000.00 while his wife and son are forced to wear the same bomb vests as they wait with their predators for Dan to return with the money. When the men tell Lori Fulton that she deserves what is happening to them, she speculates if there is more to the home invasion. Does her past have anything to do with these men that are now terrorizing her family?
Kate Page is on the story and on a time schedule to get to the bottom of the story. With the FBI handling the case, will she be shut down in finding out the why and the who of a bigger story?
Mofina has a gift of bringing his readers along for a roller coaster of a ride. Not revealing to much but enough for you to hunger for more. The characters of the Fulton’s are well developed. Dan who struggles with letting his wife down and desiring to protect her at all cost. Lori thought she put her past behind her with their move from California to New York now must rely on her training to overcome her assailants. Will they get out alive as each second counts down to their deaths?
A Special Thank You to Harlequin (US & Canada) Mira and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
No, no, and no! This book does not make sense! A bunch of jihadists try to set up New York in a blast of fire and death for no reason for most of them. Let's accept it, as I won't ever understand why anyone would want to join ISIS. But the idea of a young woman working for an NGO in Afghanistan, herself Afghan marrying an American soldier is more than weird. Especially if she comes to America with her husband to be mad at the US policy all the time (she did not know about it before?) and go back to Afghanistan, where she gets in touch with leaders of ISIS. It is a bit hard to believe. Add to that the terrorists are the clumsiest persons possible, planning ahead much further than they are, and the way things are planned are insane. They go through a complicated kidnapping to get 250,000 dollars. They intend to blow bombs in New York, but prefer to get away from the city, not thinking it may be difficult to get back. All their plans fail, thank God, but I could not believe in the story from the beginning on.
Rick Mofina always gives us a great book and this is definetly a great book. Dan works at a bank, his wife was an ex-police officer and they have a son. So begins the story with the nightmare beginning in their lives. They are each strapped with bomb and Dan is forced to go to the bank he works at and take a quarter-million-dollars. I read this book in a day - it was a page turning and hair rising ride to the finish. I do not want to spoil the story so I will just say - this is a must read.
What starts as a bank robbery ends with a terrorist plot, and Kate gets right in the middle. The story was ok, and the characters interesting. It still confirms why I can't stand the majority of news reporters.
"Every Second" by Rick Mofina is a gripping thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The story centers around the Fulton family, whose peaceful suburban life is shattered when armed men break into their home, forcing bank manager Dan Fulton to steal a quarter million dollars. With remote-detonation bombs strapped to him, his wife Lori, and their young son, the tension is palpable as every second counts.
Mofina masterfully weaves a narrative filled with suspense and urgency, making it impossible to put the book down. The characters are well-developed, particularly Dan and Lori Fulton, whose resilience and determination shine through their harrowing ordeal. Reporter Kate Page adds another layer of intrigue as she unravels the mystery, uncovering secrets that tie the present danger to Lori’s past.
The pacing is relentless, and the stakes couldn't be higher. While some elements may feel familiar to fans of the genre, Mofina's skillful storytelling and the emotional depth of the characters make "Every Second" a standout read. It's a roller coaster of a novel that will leave you breathless and eagerly turning the pages.
Overall, "Every Second" is a compelling thriller with high stakes and a fast-paced plot that keeps you hooked until the very end. Highly recommended for fans of suspense and action-packed mysteries.

4-4 1/2 star read. The third book in the 4 book Kate Page series was a really good read. The Fulton family wake up when armed men break into their home and force the father, Dan, a bank manager, to steal a quarter million dollars from his bank by putting bomb vests on him and his wife and son. When the FBI starts to investigate, they soon realize that he has been coerced, by clues he leaves. And Kate Page starts digging into the story and uncovers something that the FBI doesn't know...this is not just a robbery but the beginnings of a terror plot. And the more she learns, the more frightening the prospects are. This book was engrossing and a really interesting read.
I'm a massive fan of Rick Mofina's but, I'll admit this wasn't my favorite. While it is #3 in the series, and I hadn't read the first 2, I don't think that impacted my opinion. It reads quite well as a standalone. As well, the beginning grabs the reader from the get-go; it's in the middle that things start to slow and sag a bit and never really pick up again, despite Mofina's best efforts to ratchet up the tension with multiple POV shifts and not-altogether believable action scenes. I liked it well enough. I just didn't love it.
Awesome book. Another 5 star book by Rick Mofina. I was glued to this book from the very start. Mofina has a great talent to describe exactly what's going on without boring me with textbook police procedures. I love Kate, she's an awesome character who never backs down from a good story. I truly liked that there were a few flirtatious thoughts from both Kate and Nick. Great book, I recommend this bookto everyone. Please read it and enjoy the thrilling ending.

3.75⭐️ This book kept me pretty engaged from the get go! I enjoyed how it didn’t take time to get into the nitty gritty or anything. I didn’t love the 8+ POV during the book, I think 1-3 is more than enough. Add in it being in third person and it was a bit distracting for me. It’s been a while since I had a good suspense so this was a perfect wrap up to my vacation. TW on political/terrorism topics.
Fun book. Lots of action. It was my first of this series and I enjoyed it. I can only read so many of this kind of book a year though as I tire easy of the usual plot. But this was good and entertaining. I could read more in the future.
Great action. I liked the way the author moved the story along, but kept it all together. This was a real page turning, edge of your seat book, looking forward to my next Mofina experience.
Great story! Never a dull moment. Fast paced and easy to read. Kate Page is following a lead about stolen money and hostages. Her news editor is pushing her to find details for an exclusive report.
Mofina keeps the suspense and tension rising throughout this story of a suburban family caught up in a terrorist plot. Fast moving, the reader is kept on the edge if their seat as each chapter tightens the story and the suspense.
This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. You just can't put it down. I don't like giving away details but I will say you should this book by a very talented writer. I highly recommend this book and author.
“Every Second”has not stop action on each page.. One issue was how fast it summed up on the last chapter. However that will not stop me from reading more from Rick Mofina.
