A drag queen wants out of a secret relationship. A fan discovers his favorite author has a kalat account. Game nights growing ever more intimate. Machismo. Deep-seated secrets. Jealousy. An unforgettable summer.
Same-sex attraction has often been frowned upon, ridden with shame and guilt, even by those who naturally experience it. But despite that, it endures—in fleeting touches that linger a second too long, in the warmth of another’s presence, in shared breaths that say what words cannot.
In the second edition of this anthology, these stories come together to explore desire in all its messy complexity, capturing the moments when longing refuses to stay hidden, and intimacy becomes an act of quiet defiance.
Through whispered confessions, stolen glances, and small acts of courage, they serve as a gentle reminder that there’s really nothing wrong with wanting whoever we want.
Mark Fermill is a Filipino indie author of queer romance and contemporary fiction. His stories often follow gay characters navigating modern-day relationships in the Philippines. Recent titles include His Plastic Doll and Maybe It’s a Gay Thing. He lives in Dasmariñas, Cavite, and works as a software engineer.
I used to feel guilty reading books like this but after finishing this book, naipadama nito sakin na sex was actually okay and not something to be ashamed of. I just love how beautiful the sex scenes are written in this.
Eh not always naman. Straightness for me is more like a preference. Pero hindi siya 100%. Para sakin lang yun ha? I mean never nawawala ung chance na magkaguso pa rin sila to gays. Ikanga, love has no gender.
LOL! At regarding doon sa mga iyon, guaranteed talaga na hot siya! Hindi ko talaga mabitawan hahaha
Most favorite out of all the stories here? Ung una. Five Seconds of Silence. Kinilig ako kay Eric.
Also sana more than three ung stories dito! Kabitin pag tatlo lang hahaha
This is a review of an ARC copy of Mark Fermill’s Nothing Wrong With This (second edition).
I’m used to reading both Western and Tagalog M2M erotica, and this might be the first English one I’ve encountered that blends in bits of Tagalog dialects. Perhaps I’m simply not used to this approach yet.
This is my first time reading Fermill’s work. In the author’s note, he mentioned that this is the first time he has written a book entirely in English. His previous works were in Taglish, and in hindsight I wish I had started with those for that reason—the language here felt like a mix of hits and misses for me. Tagalog phrases appear throughout the book, which made me wonder why they weren’t either fully translated or used more consistently. Personally, I think the scenes might have felt even more erotic if they leaned fully into the vernacular. Moments like cursing or moaning would probably land hotter in Tagalog—almost like reading those anonymous gay encounter stories on Blogspot. A tindero in a sari-sari store speaking mostly English with occasional Tagalog expressions sometimes pulled me out of the scene. Since the characters could speak the vernacular anyway, I found myself wishing the book committed to it more—maybe even 90% Tagalog.
Another challenge was the heavy emphasis on “showing.” Ironically, this is the first time I’ve found myself wanting less of it. Some chapters spent several pages unpacking emotions without much movement in the plot, which slowed the pacing and made parts feel repetitive.
There was also too much narration. The constant internal monologue of a character testing the waters sometimes killed the erotic mood. I wish there had been more dialogue instead, as some of the narrated body movements tended to feel overused.
The settings and timelines also felt static at times, with many scenes taking place in a single location. I kept wanting the characters to move, grow, or push the story forward—something that would make me eager to see what happens next.
I was also unsure whether the book was aiming for pure erotica or erotic romance, since the stories seemed to shift between the two.
If the book was leaning more toward erotica, I wish the physical appearance of the characters had been described in greater detail—their facial features, hairstyles, height, and even the size of their manhood. These are staple elements of erotica. While some characters were described, I wish the same level of detail had been given to all of them to help pique my imagination.
Some characters were also difficult to like, which made parts of the reading experience unenjoyable. Bottoms keeping their pain to themselves just to please the top was a major turn-off for me. I even had a hard time finishing the last story, only for it to end that way.
That said, one chapter really stood out to me—the one about the drag queen. The writing there truly clicked. The lines landed beautifully, with words placed exactly where they needed to be. I just wish that same rhythm carried through the rest of the book.
On a lighter note, some lines were poetically written to the point that I lost sight of the erotic side of the story. I think this author would do wonders writing Taglish novels with fade-to-black smut scenes instead.
Overall, this is an ambitious attempt at bringing Filipino erotic storytelling to a global audience, and I appreciate the author for taking that step.

Still have a few stories to read but I can tell Fermill is a gifted storyteller. He writes Filipino gay life with a lot of nuance and authenticity. I wish to be as brilliant as he is.
