Heart of Gold #2

Going for Gold

Rate this book
Going for Gold is a sweet and steamy, opposites-attract romance featuring first times, long-distance pining, and creative use of massage equipment.

Danny Hartman and Sasha Zakaryan are used to doing things on hard mode. Both of them are elite gymnasts training for the upcoming Rio Olympics—with Danny feeling the pressure to win big for Team USA, while Sasha isn't sure he'll even make the team for Russia—and on top of that, they're in a secret, long-distance relationship.

But the Olympics don’t go the way either of them had planned, and when a shocking scandal rips apart Team USA, Danny turns to Sasha, only to find out that Sasha’s dealing with a crisis of his own and seemingly doesn’t have time for Danny. In the aftermath, their relationship feels like it’s one balance-beam wobble away from disaster; and when Danny invites Sasha to train at his gym over the summer, both of them are hoping for a fresh start.

Yet under the California sun, amid sweaty workouts and steamy kisses, the shadows between them grow longer. Danny’s tired of keeping secrets from his family and his friends, and as much as he wants a future with Sasha, he’s starting to worry that Sasha doesn’t feel the same way. Meanwhile, Sasha lives in fear of their relationship being discovered, knowing he could lose everything back home in Russia—or worse.

Will Danny and Sasha be able to regain their balance, or are they headed for a crash landing?

Readers should note that Going for Gold is the second in a trilogy with an overall HEA!

So I want to give this book 5 stars for how REAL and relatable the author kept this story but I also want to 1-star it for the torture that was Danny’s and Sasha’s “romance” here—and I’ve waited two freaking years for this sequel.

These two weren’t on the same page on anything. Not when it came to training, not about sex, not about their future, not about coming out or how to exactly keep up a decent relationship with each other at all. And while I absolutely could understand where Sasha was coming from I didn’t understand what he was even doing keeping up this relationship. It wasn’t fair to Danny at all and he should’ve been mature enough to let him go, for both their sakes.

Not a very romantic stance on my part but imo the only right thing to do because for Sasha there was so changing his circumstances or be any braver than he already was anytime soon.

Sasha doesn’t know what to say to him. He wishes he could give Danny what he wants, but he can’t—and Danny knew that and asked for it anyway, […]

Or maybe if they only would’ve TALKED to each other for real. Maybe that would’ve helped.

So, this was a struggle for me to read to say the least (I know it was a struggle for the author to write it too), staggering between seeing the necessity to write their story like this and also throwing a fit way too often because my romance-heart was left with only some scraps. But I must say that I am quite pleased with how this book ended here for their story to continue in book three.

Thank you to my girls for reading with me and listen to me complain.

I’m hoping Danny’s and Sasha’s HEA will flow out of the author’s pen and we don’t have to wait quite as long as another two years for it.

I initially gave this book a four star rating right after I finished it. I’ve since thought about this and am now giving it a three star because Danny and Sasha’s first sexual encounter after not seeing each other in ages was OFF PAGE. What?! Why would the author do that to us?! So that was a let down. Also, with Danny and Sasha spending two weeks together I expected more sneaky sexy times, but whatever. I love the story and this author’s writing is really good.
This book does not have an HEA. That’s still to come in book 3, but we have to wait until the summer of 2028. 😩 I’m invested and want to see what happens next. So, patiently waiting for book 3.

Automatic 5 stars because I stayed up until 3am to binge read all almost 600 pages of this.

I don't know where to begin so this review is going to be a mess of thoughts!!

I loved how despite how opposite Sasha and Danny are in how they simply operate their lives, they still have such admiration for the other and there are pieces of the other that just draws them in and makes them such an interesting couple.

Sasha 3 my heart broke for him throughout. As soon as he thought things were okay, he would get hit with some piece of news or realization that would set him back. He was constantly being brave in the face of dealing with so much. One one hand, I totally get it because *ilya rozanov voice* russia! because of russia! But on the other, I really do think had he communicated with Danny about the real danger of his situation, Danny wouldn't have taken it lightly and would have been a bit more cautious in keeping their relationship a secret. I don't think Sasha was wrong to be upset at the few slips that happened, but I do think his lack of communicating why exactly he was upset, knowing that Danny didn't know the full extent of the danger Sasha could be in was a disservice to them.

On communication, I think both of them really lacked in that department. Danny had been going through something even before Rio, the pressure of representing the US was clearly affecting his performance and he never got help for it. He didn't even really talk about it with anyone. Both Sasha and Danny were constantly offered comfort to the other, but not actually talking about the issues. Even leading up to them having sex for the first time, Danny wasn't super clear on his reservations and it made the lead up another thing he was anxious about and something they weren't on the same page about.

I did love how Danny knew Sasha well enough to know he does better with a plan, it sort of goes against the spontaneous nature of Danny, but he was so willing to be patient and to come up with foolproof ways for them to talk more and see each other. Their future was sort of this big looming thing for them where Sasha felt like this was just for now and couldn't see a real way they could be together, whereas Danny was trying to figure out ways for them to move forward, but again they didn't really talk about it with each other until it all blew up.

Their blow up definitely needed to happen, I think their time apart is going to perhaps make them realize they need to talk to each other. The whole time they were driving to the airport I was like "omg say something!!!" but I too tend to go into freeze mode like Sasha when dealing with conflict so I totally get it.

This was really just so good, I literally couldn't put the book down. Cannot believe I will have to wait until 2028 for the final book!! I will be highly anticipating Danny and Sasha's happy ending. Also, Kirill??? Please let him be the friend Sasha needs because I am reading between the lines here and like...yes? right????

A few things to note before I get started:
1. Going for Gold is book 2 of a three-part, single couple series that should be read in order.
2. This particular book doesn’t end in a HEA. Not even a HFN which is why it’s so important to start at the beginning. Without that context, this book will still be a great read but it won’t exactly be a great time.
3. This story references some traumatic real world events. Please check the content & trigger warnings before reading.

This story absolutely gutted me. I knew it would hurt, but I didn’t realize how much. When two guys - who up until this point have been in a long distance, international relationship - suddenly find themselves in each other’s back pockets, there are bound to be challenges, but spending time together is simultaneously everything Danny & Sasha have ever wanted and nothing like they planned. Even the simpler aspects of their relationship feel high stakes; despite being closer together than ever, in some ways, they’ve never seemed further apart.

Going for Gold is equal parts exhilarating, emotional, sweet, and devastating. There were so many moments when I felt conflicted over whether I wanted to shout at Sasha and Danny or give them a hug. Theirs is a journey that’s harder than most - they’re just young guys in an impossible situation trying to win this battle between their heads and their hearts. They come from different worlds - something made more obvious by their time together - and it really makes you wonder if love is enough. I hope for both of their sakes it is, and I trust Ariel Atwater to help them find the HEA they deserve. I can hardly wait!

In addition to a secret international romance, there’s a lot to unpack in Danny & Sasha’s journey, namely:
* Danny’s mental health
* Sasha’s anxiety & internalized shame
* Familial expectations
* Global politics
* LGBTQ+ rights/Marriage equality
* Homophobia, and
* Sexual assault …just to name a few.

If you love sports romance and a hard won HEA, I definitely recommend this series. Book 3 is expected to release in 2028 - keep that in mind when making reading plans.

This book completely wrecked me emotionally in the softest, most heartfelt way 🥹🤍

Elite gymnasts.
Secret relationship.
Olympic pressure.
Long-distance yearning.

Yeah… I was invested immediately.

What really makes this story stand out is how real the relationship feels. Danny and Sasha aren’t dealing with one dramatic misunderstanding or simple obstacle—there’s distance, fear, pressure, identity, expectations, and the constant weight of living under scrutiny.

And honestly??
You feel ALL of it.

Danny was so easy to connect with because underneath all the talent and ambition, he just wants to be loved openly and honestly. Watching him struggle between protecting the relationship and wanting more from it emotionally hurt in the best way.

And Sasha absolutely broke my heart.

The fear he carries about being discovered, losing everything, and what that could mean for his future adds such a heavy emotional layer to the story. You can feel how much he loves Danny even while he’s terrified of what loving him openly could cost.

The tension between them builds beautifully throughout the book—not just romantically, but emotionally. Every conversation feels loaded with things they want to say but aren’t sure they can.

I also loved the gymnastics setting SO much. The training scenes, Olympic pressure, injuries, competition stress—it all felt immersive and added so much intensity to the story.

And the balance between sweet moments and steam was PERFECT 👀🔥

✨ If you love:
• MM sports romance
• secret relationships + long-distance yearning
• emotional slow-burn tension
• Olympic athlete stories
• deeply emotional character-driven romance

This one is tender, emotional, stressful in the best way, and full of longing that absolutely aches 🥹🥇

Two elite gymnasts.
One relationship forced into the shadows.
And enough emotional pressure to snap them both in half.

Going for Gold completely pulled me into the intense world of Olympic-level competition and everything that comes with it. The expectations, the sacrifices, the fear of failure, and the loneliness that hides behind success.

Danny and Sasha felt painfully human to me. Their relationship isn’t built around one simple conflict. It’s layers of distance, secrecy, cultural expectations, personal fears, and the exhausting reality of trying to chase gold medals while also trying to hold onto each other.

What I loved most was how emotionally raw this story felt.

Danny wears his heart on his sleeve in a way that made him instantly easy to root for, while Sasha constantly feels trapped between what he wants and what he’s afraid could happen if the truth comes out. Watching them struggle with love, identity, and the pressure of being seen was honestly heartbreaking at times.

The gymnastics aspect added SO much depth to the story too. The grueling training, injuries, competition stress, and constant scrutiny made everything feel immersive and believable. You could feel how much these athletes sacrifice mentally and physically just to stay at the top.

And the tension? Absolutely aching.
Not just romantic tension, but emotional tension in every conversation, every silence, every moment they held back what they really wanted to say.

✨ Expect:
• elite athlete pressure
• hidden relationship angst
• emotional slow burn
• long-distance struggles
• vulnerable character growth
• tender moments mixed with plenty of heat

This was an ARC by the publisher/author. These are my honest thoughts on the book.
Going for Gold by Ariel Atwater is one of those books that completely pulls you into the pressure of elite sports, in this case, gymnastics. Danny and Sasha are trying to chase their Olympic dreams while navigating a long-distance relationship, being from different countries and the pressures of elite athletes. As a former competitive athlete, I can appreciate the struggles of training for competitions. It takes a toll on our bodies and mental status. People outside competitive sports often do not know the sacrifices athletes must make.
The characters seemed relatable because they were both hiding their true selves for different reasons. Telling the truth to those we love can be hard because we often do not want to hurt them. However, the characters soon learn that carrying the pain of not telling their fears is too much. They end up hurting each other and themselves. At times, I got frustrated with the characters because they wouldn't talk to each other.
This book also explores how different cultures view the LGBTQ community. It was confusing to Danny and Sasha as neither of them was able to understand the other one. I believe that if they talked to each other about their concerns, there would be more understanding. As the characters in the story are still rather young, maybe they will grow emotionally in the next book!
The only thing I did not enjoy was the constant use of the word “like” by Danny. To me, it gave it a Valley Girl vibe.
If you love sports with a romantic element, this is a great read! I really enjoyed this read.

Thank you Haylingbookstorm for the ARC

Danny and Sasha are both Olympic gymnast. In a secret relationship.
Danny coming out for team USA and Sasha for team Russia.
They try to speak and see each other, when they can.
If you like to read about an MM gymnastics romance. This book is for you.
The book is well written. As a Dutchie, I loved to see the name of Epke Zonderland (the flying dutchmen) in this book.
I felt so much for Danny and Sasha. All they wanted, was to be together. Like a normal couple.
But Sasha, is so scared. They find out about them. And what it will cost him.
I sometimes hated it. How Danny pushed Sasha for things. He wasn't ready for. That he didn't understand, why Sasha kept his distant in public.
I hope so, the two of them end up together. Because they do love each other.

I am sort of relucantly giving this book 4 stars because I am counting on full redemption in the 3rd book. (otherwise its a 3) If we don't get some chracter growth and communication in book 3, I'll be very disappointed at the arc of these MCs. NOT just because this book doesnt end in an HEA, mostly because it is just one long story outlining things they did together while NOT communicating or growing together.

I loved the first book, full 5 stars. This book really is just "the middle" of a bigger story. And yes, I know its a series and always planned on being a series, however, I found it very frustrating because they really dont grow all that much. It makes sense why both of these MCs are the way they are, but it often seems like they have literally ZERO communication, even when they are talking. They have the language barrier, (yo at the very least, google translate guys!) and then Sasha just CANNOT SPEAK UP. I mean, maybe once or twice in this story he actually spoke up when needed. The best part of their communication was the one small scene where Sasha had been drinking. I started to wonder why Danny even likes Sasha. Sasha seems to love how hot Danny is, but finds most things about him annoying until eventually his quirky ways become endearing. It just didnt feel like enough to sustain the big hurdles they have to get over.

I'll obviously be back for the third book (in 2 years.... gahhh) cause I am invested in their happily ever after, and I hope that when I finish their story, I'll look back on book 2, and be like yep -- that was all necessary. But if you loved book 1 and have the will power to wait until book 3 is out I'd recommend waiting to read this book until you can immediatly jump to the final part of the story.

I received a free ARC copy in exchange for a review.

I read Heart of gold last fall and I have reread it multiples times. So I was thrilled when I was selected to read an ARC of Going for Gold.

First of all, this book was so good that I had a hard time putting it down. I was addicted from the start. I lost sleep because of it and I’m not sorry.

Danny and Sasha are almost complete opposites in more ways than one. They are both gymnasts at an elite level and are now trying to make their new long-distance relationship work. But there are just so many obstacles they both have to overcome. My heart truly aches for them. I was crying near the end, and I usually don’t do that with books. I was invested to say the least!

In many ways Going for Gold feels authentic because I haven’t found many books written this way yet. The thoughts and fears that Danny and Sasha experience also feel realistic. It’s definitely a love story but a rocky one. If it’s one thing I take away from this book is that you should prioritize your mental health.

The only sad thing now is that we might have to wait a couple of years for the next book. But I have a feeling it’s going to be worth it! Until then, prepare for an emotional roller coaster!

I want to thank the author for the opportunity to read this ARC! English is my second language. No AI has been used writing this review.

Couple of things to note before reading this:
1. This is book 2 of a three-part series, that should be read in order to understand Danny & Sasha's relationship.
2. This book does not end in a happy ending. Start at the first book to make sure it makes sense. It will be a great read even if you don't start at the beginning but you will need the context.
3. Read trigger warnings before reading, this story contains references and sensitive scenes regarding traumatic real world events.

While Danny and Sasha are trying to accomplish their Olympic dreams, they have to navigate through a long-distance relationship, being from different walks of life and the pressures of being elite athletes.

This book looks at how different cultures view the LGBTQ community. Danny and Sasha struggle to see each others point of view due to how they have been raised around the LGBTQ community. I think if their communication was better and more open, they would be able to understand each others views.

Danny and Sasha end up hurting each other in this book on multiple levels, which broke me! I am hoping that in book 3 we see both characters really mature and grow emotionally.

Normally, I am not into MM romances, however, this one has actually surprised me (along with book 1).

Thank you to Ariel Atwater & Hayling Bookstorm for the ARC.

Thank you to Ariel Atwater, I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was a tough one for me to get into. It took me at least to 40ish percent before I connected with Danny and Sasha. Their story was a challenging ride, with both of them having such different living conditions in their respective countries.

I think Ariel did a good job showing the stark difference of the acceptance of the LGBTQ community between Russia and the US, but I was perplexed that Danny wouldn't even try to understand where Sasha was coming from. Not once did he research or look up news articles to understand why Sasha was not wanting many people to know about their relationship.

I don't think there's a happy ending in store for them, but maybe I'm wrong. Putting myself in Sasha's shoes, I would think it would be hard AF to realize that there is a world where he could be safe and accepted for who he is.

I love all things Ariel Atwater, and this does not disappoint; this is book two in The Heart of Gold series. I read the first book in the series so that I could understand this book better, I do recommend that. Danny Hartman is on the US Olympic gymnastic team, and training for the Rio Olympics. He is bisexual. Sasha is a gymnast from Russia, trying to make the Olympic team, he is also bisexual. Sasha and Danny are trying to maintain a long distance relationship, and not letting anyone know about it; or letting anyone know they are bisexual!! Sasha especially, as Russia has "no gay's" in their country. Can these two make the relationship work with only seeing each other a couple times a year? Love the plot, great setting, and strong intense interesting characters. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Ariel Atwater!!!

Going for Gold is the 2nd book in the Heart of Gold series by Ariel Atwater. This is a very emotional story of two elite gymnasts who are trying to survive a long-distance relationship. They are both under extreme stress from not only the pressure of competing at an elite level and chasing Olympic dreams, but also the cultural dynamics of being members of the LGBTQ community, the physical and mental toll of constant training, the difficulty of maintaining a long-distance relationship, all while dealing with individual crises. Danny just wants to love Sasha out loud, but Sasha lives in fear of their secret relationship being found out, because for him, the cost of discovery could be everything.

Tropes:
• sports (Olympic gymnasts) romance
• hidden relationship
• slow-burn/emotional yearning
• long-distance secret relationship
• MM romance

This is like fucking "between the teeth" again (no, seriously theres like a million paralles), I'm in pain.
Sequel in FUCKING 2028????? IF HAD KNOWN THAT I WOULDN'T HAVE READ THIS NOW AND JUST LIVED WITH THE ENDING OF BOOK ONE. SERIOUSLY 2028??? I KNOW AUTHORS AREN'T MACHINES BUT 2.5 YEARS FOR A SEQUEL FOR A BOOK THAT ENDS LIKE THIS! (My respects though to the author for finishing this even though she states it took her 3.5 years, seriously im glad she didnt give up on it even though it mustve been very hard to write a book like this. Im just throwing a temper tantrum right now.) I'll probably have died of either old age or emotional upset until that thing is released. I hate unfinished trilogies.

(Real review here probably at some point, but now im too upset, even if I know the story is gonna turn out okay)

Danny's parents very obviously knowing that their son is queer and in a relationship with Sasha trying to give hints that it would be ok for them to say it had me laughing so hard. Least subtle people on the planet.
Again loved that the author goes deep into sensitive subjects like the Armenian genocide (I live in a country with a big Armenian community, it's rare to see a book mention the genocide) and Sasha's complicated relationship with his own identity (he's armenian/russian). I saw the doctor thing coming with how Matt was talking about Julia acting weird, but it was still heartbreaking, but still pretty well handled. Same with how some coaches behave (if you know gymnastics, you know).
I really felt bad for Sasha, I don't think Danny realises how terrified he must be, and that it feels impossible for him to be found out.

Cannot wait for the last book

Ahhhh! My heart shattered when I read that I have to wait till 2028 for Good as Gold!!!!! Anywho, I enjoyed Going for Gold. I enjoyed that this book went deeper into the boys past helping the reader understand why the boys (especially Sasha) are the way they are. A lot of deep topics (like the laws for the LGBTQ community in Russia) are explored in the story which was a learning experience for me when it came to Russia's history. Danny just seems like a gentle soul that wants to scream about his love for Sasha from the mountain tops, and we see where he gets his gentleness from when we are introduced to his parents. I knew right away what happened when the laundry was dropped on the stairs (hehe). I understand why Sasha has so many guards up, but I just want to shake it from time to time! Ahhh hurry up 2028!

Writing this with tears still streaming down my face from the last third of this book. (Like literal sobbing at some points) This is a TOUGH read. It’s so good, but god, idk if I can reread it until book three is in my hands. I can see how Danny and Sasha can come back from this, but Atwater writes human conflict so well, it hurts.

… uh, it hurts and I’m in physical pain from sadness but also PLEASE BUY THIS BOOK SO THAT WE CAN GET BOOK THREE. I will personally show up at your house and cry at you until you buy it, because my poor heart can’t take it ending there.

Rating: ★★★★☆

To say this book was good would be an extreme understatement. I found that once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. By halfway through the book, Id find myself constantly thinking about this book. Id imagine scenarios between the characters, what was going on with background characters, thinking about their past, present, and future.
This is the 2nd book in a trilogy, written in 3rd person with clear distinctions between who is narrating. It follows Danny & Sasha as they navigate through the world of Olympic gymnastics, an extremely long distance relationship (California & Russia) and each of their personal struggles with being a part of the LGBTQIA+ community. It mentions some real-world events but follows fictional characters.
Can't wait for book 3!
