Outage: The Awakening is book 2 in the Outage series by T. W. Piperbrook. Not only has an unexpected winter storm hit the east coast, but a pack of werewolves are taking advantage of the chaotic situation. Tom Sotheby has run into the woods to try to avoid the beasts, but he has seen people turned. The situation looks grave. Worst, he doesn’t know if he can trust people, making the situation more perilous, because he has to confront the rest of this nightmarish night, quite possibly, completely alone.
This is a quick read and I resolved that I was going to read all the books of this series. Even though, the books end on cliffhangers, I’m sufficiently intrigued that I want to keep reading. The writer puts the reader in the character’s head space, making the reader vicariously feel the terror. It’s quite effective.
The shortest of the 3 Outage novellas, and it somehow felt not quite as intense as the first.
Still, I am hooked and will zip on to the third novella: .
As I said in my review for Outage, this scary story reminds of an early Stephen King story in a good way and it does continue that way. I am glad I waited and picked up the combined set and saved $2.99.
All this is happening over the course of a long night in the middle of a super blizzard. The body count is rising, and it is NOT looking good to be a human right about now.
When you read a book you haven't read in a while it feels like you are reading a script for a movie. The words are so descriptive you feel like you are there.
Fantastic continuation to the first Outage book. This short picks up with the character we left off with in the first book, we get a bit of backstory on him, and then his survival story continues.
I love how the character/story POV transitions and the story continues on
Oh man, I'm so torn about this series. I almost didn't read this one after the first. But I did. And now I'm reading the third... I don't love it, but I don't hate it.
Overall, these books will definitely be someone's cup of tea, I promise you that much.
A read in one go book. I finished reading this far too late I will never be able to sleep now. I got so caught up with the monsters and Tom. It certainly wasn’t his lucky night. Unknown to him and finding out a bit late that the people he was hiding with are the same as what he’s hiding from. I need to go and read an easy read with nothing in it to get my pulse rate going out of control. I definitely recommend this book.
Awakening takes you back a bit into things we didn't see in book one when it comes to Tom and his wife and how they were trying to make their own escape from the creatures.
Spoilers!
Tom tries so hard to keep him and his wife safe, but there is just to many creatures coming from all around. He meets Abby and they all try to make a break for it but they wrecked the car and his wife gets killed. He watches Abby change and he is again on the run for his life.
He finds a running car and he is off again trying to survive the storm and the creatures that are gathered for this storm so they can feed on the town. On his way to town he finds a young couple and picks them up. They makes it into town and he gets help by a man who shoots the creature and kills him.
They all hide in the guys shop but it will only be a matter of time before the creatures find them. Mark explains to him about his brother being one of them and how he had given him some bullets that will take them down as he didn't want to be one. He ended up having to kill his brother. He also tells him how at first he didn't believe him and so he didn't have all the weapons and bullets that he needed as they are at his brothers house.
The young couple seem really scared and quiet but they are really just biding their time. They are not what they seem and neither is Mark. Poor Tom can't seem to catch a break as it comes to fighting creatures.
Awakening has a lot of action in it as they are being attacked every time they turn around it seems. The creatures are everywhere and it's hard to try and trust anyone. For the most part it's Tom (one man) against all these supernatural creatures and that seems a little bit unreal to me how he seems to survive.
I did enjoy it as it was full of a lot of action but it seems a bit far fetched but I will let it go there it's a werewolf novel. If you like horror with a lot of action then you will probably enjoy this series.
While listening to this it seems to me that this one just ends and book three picked up right were the second leaves off so I am going to call that a cliffhanger if you don't have the third book. Since I am listening to the box set I just go from one right to the other so no cliffhangers for me. :)
To be honest I found the last two books to be very simple reads. Nothing really draws you in. The characters are paper thin and predictable, over all if your looking to kill a little time it's fine. Just don't expect to anything great.
My rating: 3 stars Audiobook narrator Troy Duran rating: 3.5 stars
This is the follow up book to Outage and is just as creepy and cold. It just seems that there is no way out. Humanity will lose to the werewolves!
It had been awhile since I read the first book and had forgotten most of the characters. I am not sure if this book had similar characters or not. There were also quite a few characters and sometimes I had trouble keeping up. I am not sure how motivated I am to read the next book since I know that there are at least five in the series.
The narrator did an ok job with voicing the characters and being chilly/icy.
This was a much better effort than the first book in the series. Piperbrook relies on a tried-and-true formula, barricading his characters in an abandoned building while the imminent threat is right on their doorstep. It works. The snow storm, power outages, people being hunted and run down by werewolves, there's nothing new here and yet the author makes it all work and keeps things interesting. Piperbrook is fond of a twist and he throws in a couple at the end of this tale. I had to jump right into book three. Hopefully the author can keep the momentum he built in this book going throughout the series.
An incredibly nerve-wracking read. I was on the edge of my seat, heart pounding, as Tom attempted to make his escape. Lots of surprises jumping out when you least expect it, action packed and beautifully written.
