New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cassie Edwards tells a sweeping tale of fateful love, forbidden, yet undeniable. . .

Hannah Kody came to her brother's ranch in the Kansas Territory to be his eyes, as his sight was failing fast. But for Strong Wolf, Hannah was supposed to be the enemy, allied not only to the settlers he distrusted, but to the brutal foreman of her brother's ranch. He felt only sorrow could come of their attraction, until the day Hannah rode to his lodge, fell into his arms, and launched a journey neither had the desire to deny...

EDIT: I totally forgot this author was in huge trouble for all sorts of plagiarism a few years ago. I'd like to know if this book is one of the offenders, because apparently her backlist has done the rounds of a few publishers, and then been dumped when people were made aware of the issue.

So, there’s a big fad at the moment for publishers to rerelease historical romances (especially Westerns) from the bodice ripper era. They slap a new cover on and hope nobody realises the books are decades old and painfully out-dated.

This book is a dinosaur.

Granted, some of these old-school bodice rippers still hold up today, but Wild Thunder, from its ridiculously fake “feisty” heroine, to its insta-love, to its vague racism (look at the guy on the new cover!!), and even to its online author profile with the 1980s glamour photo… this book should have been left to rest in its grave. This is not a book that works in the twenty-first century. And how so-called hero and so-called heroine fell so In Love during an argument over a dam, and that the heroine’s BLIND brother *saw* that they were in love even though they didn’t even speak to each other…

I do find it so weird that there’s almost no difference between a book from 2005 to a book from 2015, but a book from 1995 is a totally different species to a book ten years later.

Here is an example of the writing from Wild Thunder (before hero or heroine have even had a conversation!). Exclamation marks abound:

And, oh, she so badly wanted him. It would be heaven to be held by him. His muscled arms could make her feel so protected, so loved!
But at this moment, they were enemies. And she would fight for her freedom!

Wrenching her wrist free, Hannah turned and ran. “My father imprisoned me at the convent!” she shouted over her shoulder. “No one will imprison me ever again!”

Strong Wolf was in awe of Hannah’s spirit, of her will to fight for her rights! He admired this in her, and wanted her even more than before. She would be a challenge for any man. And he had always enjoyed challenges of all kinds!

Well and truly a Fabio-era book.

ARGH!!!!!!!!!!

It’s really hard to write a review for a story that didn’t make sense and was extremely difficult to read. Not only were there too many characters (tribal) to keep up with, but also the way this was written confused me so much that I almost DNF.

Ok, I get it. Indians spoke a certain way out on the land, but seriously? I couldn’t follow anything any of them were saying. The author tried too hard somewhere in this read and ended up messing the whole thing up. I didn’t even find the “romance” side of this read appealing. I had absolutely nothing to hold on to.

I really hate writing these types of reviews because the last thing I want to do is hurt peoples feelings. Especially when they work hard at something. But I also feel like people should know what doesn’t work as much as what does work so that they can improve.

Wild Thunder by Cassie Edwards is a 2015 Kensington publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Hannah is sent to live with her brother Chuck, on his ranch in the Kansas territory, when he learns he is losing his eyesight. Upon her arrival, Hannah meets a handsome, dark-eyed “Indian” named Strong Wolf and the two feel an instant attraction. But, naturally, with Hannah being white and with racism and tensions all around, and with Hannah's duty to stay by her brother's side as he fights for his livelihood, the romance seems doomed from the start. Can true love find a way or will the trials they face overcome them?

First of all let's talk about the elephant in the room, then I will give my assessment of the book.

For those who are unfamiliar with this author, there was a snafu regarding some allegations of plagiarism several years back. I doubt seriously this book was one of those called out because I would think no one would want all that history dredged back up with these reissues. It did not escape my attention that on Goodreads, great pains have been taken to remove all previous editions of the book from their catalog, which is rather curious, though. I don't really understand all the accusations, but it would seem the author 'borrowed' some passages without asking permission or giving credit for them, which of course is a big, bad no-no. However, I had no crisis of conscience reading this one since I am sure all the legal issues have long since been cleared up and a publisher is backing it.

I love the idea of these older titles being reissued in digital format for many reasons. One is, I often think of a book I read many years ago and discover it's out of print or very hard to find. Having a book in digital means I can read old favorites and never have to worry about hunting them down again. The other reason, is that many times these stories are timeless and are just as good today as they were back when they were originally published, which paves the way for these great stories to find a new audience, keeping them alive and relevant, even after all these years. I have actually carved out a niche for myself by reviewing these older titles and I love it!

Having said that, not all books translate well for new readers and this one, sadly, was just a little too dated. The dialogue was cheesy to the point of being laugh out loud funny in places, which of course was not the intention. There were some moments too, that were interesting and engaging. I did like the love story and I know that for modern readers they will find the love at first sight trope difficult to fathom or relate to, but it was rather common in historical times for a couple to meet and marry in short order. But, I did like the sensuality and Strong Wolf was romantic, even it does seem corny, because feelings were involved, which is more my speed and is an element I really miss in modern romance. The action was what saved the book, because the story does move at a steady to fast pace with the lovers being torn apart and brought back together several times, which is another common trope for books published in this time frame.
Overall, this book would have been pretty common fare in the mid-nineties, and probably sold well and was probably very popular. But, for the modern reader, I think, it will most likely fall flat. 2 stars

Really?! We are in the middle of Kansas and there is a Native American woman named Lotus Blossom? I can’t, I just can’t ...😂 Plus, the daughter is named Snow Princess?! Wow, just...wow!

The grammatical errors are ridiculous. A child could fix them. The plotline is confusing at best.

Why are the quotes at the beginning of each chapter there? They never have anything to do with what is going on in the chapter. A giant mess of a novel.

Rebellious Hannah found herself in the Kansas territory after she was sent there by her parents to help care for her blind brother where she met strong wolf, chief of the Potawatomis people. They must overcome ever obstacles in their way to find their HEA.

This book started off promising. Strong wolf is a strong virile indian warrior and chief. Hannah is a white woman. However along the way, i started to lose interest. I felt the middle - ending part of the story was too long and unnecessarily drawn out. Life was hard during the time this story was set especially for the Indians after they found white men invading their land so their problems were endless and frustrating however some of the problematic scenes we could have done without especially with Tiny Sharp. He had a lot of chances to escape and the author just kept bringing him back in scenes and giving him more chances to do wrong and be evil. After a while it just became exhausting to read about him.
Also there were a lot of grammatical errors. This book needed more editing. A lot of the words were misspelled.
Another thing was the author kept repeating phrases like "forking the eyebrow". A lot of times the characters are always forking their eyebrows. I really started to hate that phrase. As a matter of fact, I don't want to read or hear that phrase ever again! She needs to broaden her writing creativity and come up with different phrases to keep the reader interested instead of using one over and over again. It becomes monotonous and boring.
Nevertheless this has not daunted me from her other stories. I will read her work again.

Cassie Edwards definitely has her own style. Mom does not see this as an amazing read, but a good read, that has some nostalgia from when she first started to read romance.
Mom is back and forth on wether or not she like how much Cassie Edwards packs into her books. In some ways it is great in the sense it is easy to keep reading because some new is going on, but at the same time it also means you never get to fully enjoy a scene or feel all the emotions. This plans mom for most romance books like this, but mom feels Cassie Edwards some how pulls it of for her enough that she can keep reading, but also understand why this may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
As for the heroine. She was in some ways a little to free for the times. Not the Hannah has to be historically accurate; but she seemed to go back and forth between being a good woman and telling the world to go roll in a patch of poppies.
The hero seems to fit his role. In some ways it makes him a little racist, in other ways his way of think does fit with Account mom has read from other Native Americans at the time. The names though can get a little far out there.
Lastly the supporting characters are hard to get a read on. Sometimes it seems to make them more human well other times it makes it seems like the author does not know herself.

Did Not Finish.
I managed 10 chapters before I had to stop. The idea behind this book is good and I could have enjoyed it, but the writing was terrible.
The POV changed abruptly every few paragraphs, in some sections it changed every paragraph or few sentences. Exclamation marks were also overused which was terribly annoying, as was the constant use of '...'.
All in all, the writing style frustrated me so much that I had to stop reading.
I can't recommend this book to anyone.

Poor writing

Story could have been anywhere. No nice descriptions of surroundings or the Native American way of life. Written in such a style, it could have been for the sex szenenes strewn in every now and then. Geez, does the author actually do research or have any idea of....? Had to stop at 80% when all Natives were happy all whites good, living in cabins, babies in crib, omg....

Ok.

Personally I didn’t think this book was well written. I read about 25% and just couldn’t handle how back and forth all of the characters were. I don’t mean they were repetitive, but they were all over the place with with decisions, jumping to conclusions that were serious without even considering other options. It made them seem childish and rash and that killed it for me.

Wild Thunder by Cassie Edwards is a historical romance. Hannah Kody came to her brother's ranch in the Kansas Territory to be his eyes, as his sight was failing fast. Yet his misfortune couldn't dim the joy she found in the wide vistas of the Western plains. And the excitement she found in the presence of Strong Wolf. For Strong Wolf, Hannah was supposed to be the enemy, allied not only to the settlers he distrusted, but to the brutal foreman of her brother's ranch. He felt only sorrow could come of their attraction, until the day Hannah rode to his lodge, fell into his arms, and launched a journey neither had the desire to deny.

Wild Thunder is a well researched and detailed historical. Hannah was a character I thought I would love, and the reason I picked up the book. She desired freedom in a time when women had little power and few choices. getting to leave a convent to join her ailing brother was a mixed blessing for her. Strong Wolf was a fiercely honorable and peaceful man, struggling to protect his people. Hannah's brother Chuck was barely fleshed out as a character, and the rest of her family was even less dynamic. I found some of the descriptions of the history and tensions to be interesting, but found the whole thing to be a little too complicated and drawn out. I realize that this was the first book in a new romance series, so some of the detail might have been to build up for future books, but I was ready for a conclusion about halfway through the story. Hannah and Strong Wolf find each other, admit and give into their feelings, and promise to marry about that time. However, more and more other things happen, other characters get introduced, and while it was reasonably well done I just did not think all of it was necessary.

Wild Thunder was a highly detailed and well researched historical. For those that want a deeper and more layered read than this might be the book you are looking for. I went into the book expecting a lighter read, which might have been my own fault, and found myself skimming through conversations and five page sex scenes. i was just done with the story about half way through, but felt the need to finish it anyway.

Wild Thunder by Cassie Edwards

Western Indian Romance

Hannah Kody is a fiercely independent 18-year-old tomboy that is tall and lanky. Hannah does not consider herself a beauty. She craves freedom and wants to control her own destiny without parental or sibling interference. Trying to tame her nature, her parents placed her in a nunnery. Plotting to return home, her parents arrive to send Hannah to her brother, Chuck. Hannah needs to be his eyes, he is going blind on his ranch in the Kansas territory. Kansas represents freedom to Hannah, to ride as wild as the wind and do as she pleases. Chuck’s ranch borders the Potawatomis Indian Village; Hannah is fascinated by the thought of the Indian People. When Strong Wolf arrives at the ranch, Hannah sees a muscular, strong, handsome warrior who is next in line to be Chief. Attraction strikes at once. Tiny, Chucks foreman is pure evil and will not stop until he runs the Indians off their land and take Chuck’s ranch as well. Strong Wolf has secrets and another enemy in a Sioux warrior seeking revenge for his father death. Thus begins the tale of Strong Wolf and Hannah. Ms. Edwards has created a story filled with strife, family and tribal love, prejudice, evil men with evil intentions, revenge, a strong hero and heroine in Strong Wolf and Hannah, and red-hot passion. The trials of the Potawatomis just keep coming in this story, Ms. Edwards has filled this story with trials and tribulations for Strong Wolf and Hannah. The action is non-stop. Thru it all the one constant is the love between Strong Wolf and Hannah. Ms. Edwards gave us a look into the tribal life of the Potawatomis Indians and into the family structure and traditions which was enlightening.

I would recommend this book for young adults to adults due to sexual content.

I was gifted this book via netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion and a review.

I have been reading Cassie Edwards books for many years now and as you can tell i am a huge fan of hers, not only are her books seamlessly written but they are a joy to read as well, all her characters have a fantastic depth to them so much so you feel that you actually no them in real life.

Hannah Kody is finally free and is being sent to the Kansas Territory to look after her brother. Its all that she has longed for and more, freedom.

She is at her brother's ranch to be his eyes, as his sight has been failing him. Yet his misfortune hasn't been able to dim the pure joy that Hannah found in this limitless vistas of the proud and beautiful Western plains.

Hannah has found something else to be joyous about, Strong Wolf. He is the Future chief of the Patawatomis, he stands handsome tall and proud, he is everything Hannah has dreamed about she knows he is her destiny. And Strong Wolf has dreamed of her too, a beautiful golden-haired woman reaching out to him with the primal pull of desire.

But all is not as happy as it seems when some sinister people plot against them.

What a fantastic book i thoroughly enjoy it and i learnt allot from it as well.

I Loved Strong Wolf what a man, and even with all those out there wanting to cast aspersions against him and his people all he wants is peace, harmony, and to have good friends surround him.

Hannah has such a rebellious bright nature about her and a go get attitude that is such an asset to the book.

There is nothing about this book i didn't love, i just wish i could have told the author myself what a privilege it is to read and review her books.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

I have read several of Cassie Edward's books before and have always enjoyed them.
Hannah has been given a reprieve. Her father has let her out of the Convent she was recently put in to help care for her brother Chuck, who is going blind, at his ranch..in Kansas. She loves it when she gets there because of the freedom she feels she has.

Strong Wolf will be chief of his tribe when his Grandfather passes. He has brought part of his tribe from Wisconsin to Kansas. When he has them settles, he will go back for the rest. He has a good relationship with people in the area, the Officers at the fort and the settlers by his land. He is known to be honest and fair.

When he and Hannah meet, there is an instant attraction. Luckily, because of his sight, her brother Chuck doesn't notice this but this will not last long. They start spending more time together.

Someone in the area has hurt several Indian braves. Strong Wolf thinks he knows who it is but doesn't have proof. Hannah is also warning her brother about his ranch foreman's tricks but Chuck doesn't believe it at first.

Relationships between the White and Indian nations are very tenuous. Will trouble be caused to interfere? Will Hannah and Strong Wolf be together?

Hannah and Strong Wolf are so good together. It is as if they were meant to be. They teach each other about the others Culture with respect. Strong Wolf is always willing to listen to another view before making a decision. He is a fair and just man. He is respected by his people.

If you like reading bout Native Americans, you will enjoy this book. They are given the respect they deserve in the story.

Review:

I have not read this genre of romance in a while and thought I would pick it up, being attracted to the the cover first. I did not realize it was a re-release. While I do not mind re-releases, I did not find a lot of updating in this one. The language used seemed more from the time period it was written in (think of your typical bodice-rippers of the 80' s and 90's). I loved the idea of the book; independent, feisty, young woman goes out west to help her brother and ends up falling for the handsome, exotic Indian Chief. I do like most of the story, I just really think more time should have been put into updating it. I thought Hannah and Strong Wolf had a good spark and chemistry between them and loved the scenes between the two of them the most.

Okay book, not my favorite.

Unromantic, Unlikable Characters, Lots Going On, Many Characters...

I read 45% of this book before I decided to close it for good. I don't consider what was between the main characters to be romance. I understand that Indian relationships were different but this was just a bit disturbing to me. Not the kind of relationship I enjoyed whatsoever. On top of that, I got sick of hearing about how it must have been destiny that brought them together at different times and how they had visions of being together and all that. A reference or 2 is fine but I almost felt like this books should've been called Wild Destiny. Was pretty annoying.

I didn't care for either one of the main characters. They were both annoying and not very bright in my opinion. All he wanted was for her "my woman" to be by his side at all times and she was too dumb to want otherwise. She was there to help out her brother but she seemed to care less about him and we barely saw him due to her always running to Strong Wolf.

Aside from the 2 main characters, there were many other secondary characters that the book jumped around from. None of them very interesting or likable.

There was quite a bit going on in the book. Not too much to lose your attention or confuse you but it just wasn't very interesting to me.

Who knows, maybe the 2nd half of the book got better but from what I read in the first half of the book, I would never recommend this book. Romance books are mostly all that I read so my feelings aren't based on the fact that it's a change of genre for me or anything like that. This just wasn't romance to me.

Hannah is an eighteen year old girl who is a tomboy and doesn’t want to change her ways. Hannah’s parents then send her to a convent to become a nun. Hannah was in isolation as she refused to cut her long hair. She felt that was her only asset. Hannah wanted to train show horses but her father was against it. He wanted her to be a doctor like him but Hannah wanted nothing to do with that. So now her brother was going blind and Hannah was to go to his ranch to be with him. She would be Chuck’s eyes. She had already went horseback riding and took a look at the Potawatomes Indian village. She at least felt free with her brother. Tiny Sharp was her brother’s foreman and Hannah didn’t trust him. Strong Wolf showed up at Chuck’s door one day . Strong Wolf made Hannah feel alive in a way she never had before. Tiny wants all that is Chucks and feel Hannah is a hindrance to him obtaining that goal. Hannah dreams of Strong Wolf. Strong Wolf has dreams of a long yellow haired woman.
This book was one you didn’t hate and you didn’t really love. It just somehow missed the wow factor I love in a story. The writing was good, and I liked the action in the story. I liked most of the characters other than Tiny. Strong Wolf was a great character and I loved how he wanted peace and how he tried to do things. Hannah was a pretty good character also.

I have never read a Cassie Edwards book before, but I loved the Native American romances I read as a teen and was very excited to read this story. The Wild Thunder cover is beautiful, and Cassie Edwards is a published author with many books to her name. This book, however, was not a favorite. I found the writing and characters to be a little basic, and some of the actions and choices of characters to be less than believable for the setting. There was not a lot of detail outside of character description. The previous books that I have read in this genre were amazingly detailed about Native American language and culture, and the interaction between the lead characters was quite explosive. While there is a good deal of romantic interaction between the lead characters in this book, I feel like it is more predictable and things seem to move quickly. While someone else might rate the book highly, I am giving it a 3/5 rating based purely on the fact that there were few grammatical errors and that the story met all the basic requirements for a romance novel.

Yak. I'm not going to do a full review on this since it was DNF for me, but thought I should say a quick word on it.
I thought the characters were ridiculous. The heroine's supposed feistiness was painfully cheesy, as was the dialogue. Not to mention all the exclamation points! So unnecessary! All the time!
I also hate it when one of the driving factors in a storyline is the blind stupidity of a character which was partially the case with Hannah's brother and his foreman. Just fire the dude.

Anyways, this is a big no no for me and I just couldn't bear to read anymore.

Good writing but very little anticipation and excitement to the story. Review to come...

*On a side note - This is (obviously) a historical romance, a historical western romance at that which is also re-release of Savage Heart (Chippewa #3) - 1985. Of course the wordage is going to be different then a present-day contemporary romance! SMH

It's a re-release and to be frank, I did not find that it flows. The writing is definitely not updated. The characters, even taking the era into consideration did not capture or hold my attention. I have read plenty of other early works from authors like Johanna Lindsey and have not felt this disconnected.
