The poems in this book tell stories of animals and nature, from two sweaty hippos, a smiling lizard and some creepy crawlers to a few tricky dandelions. At the end of each poem, find out more in an interview with a key character or a list of fascinating facts.
This book was very creative and not what you would expect. From the cover and the title it seemed like a silly book. Then you open the first page and it’s all rhymes, keeping the reader entertained. Illustrations matched perfectly to the scenery described in the authors words, I could actually picture what was going on in my head. I thought the book was going to be all poems after reading the first few pages, and then it becomes an educational experience. The characters from the poems are “interviewed”, and each animal gives fun facts about certain areas where they are from. I actually learned a lot from this book, as well as got a good laugh from some of the silliness. This book is amazing and hands down getting 5 stars for creativity and it’s unique style of writing.
What a hippopota-mess is a poem that is written by Pat Skene. It's written for the age group five through eleven. This poem is a great read. It is about a little boy that meets two hippopotomous that seem to be mean but end up being friendly. They take the little boy on a journey, save him from danger, and have fun taking advantage of him and leave his room a total mess. The characters are only shown on the front cover of the book. The words are well used with ryhme and ryhthym that as the poem is read the plot can easily be followed. There are no pictures to help the reader to see what's going on in the poem, the words help the reader to visualize the action. This poem would be appealing to young readers because of the language used and the rhythm and rhyme used.
