Sir Henry Ainsley is drowning. Years of debt have piled up, and the only thing keeping him afloat is the need to see his sister secure in marriage. When an unexpected lifeline appears to absolve his debts in return for information on a missing merchant ship, he jumps at the chance—though he thought he’d left such dangerous work behind him. The catch is it comes with attending a house party on the Channel Islands, hosted by Mrs. Alice Seymour. But what’s one more gamble, if it could see his sister safely married before his crumbling facade is revealed?
Alice Seymour has no interest in love. Widowed and painfully reserved, she hosts her yearly matchmaking parties more out of duty than delight; it is far easier to help others find their happily ever after. Yet when the inscrutable Sir Henry arrives, his charm and quiet kindness begin to stir feelings she had long believed were too fanciful to be real. But as secrets from his past surface—and pieces of her own begin to fall into place—she is not certain she wishes to open her heart.
But the truth behind the missing ship might be more dangerous than Henry believed, and the possibility of failure threatens to destroy his future and the fragile trust growing between him and his hostess. As the island’s shadowy dealings come to light, Henry’s options grow limited, and Alice must choose between the comfort of the life she knows... or risk everything for the one man who truly sees her.
Karen Thornell grew up reading when she should have been sleeping, but it wasn't until 2019 that she started writing. Tired of ending books and saying 'goodbye' to beloved characters, she wondered what it would be like to have her own characters that lived in her head always. It was probably a mark of sleep deprivation that she wanted people living in her head, but the idea was planted regardless.
Karen lives in Utah with her husband and kids. When not writing contemporary or regency romance, she spends her free time doing endless loads of laundry, playing board games, and, yes, talking to those characters in her head.

Loved this story! This is the 5th book in the series. It can be read as a standalone. Henry has made some poor choices in his life and he is trying to fix them. He also is trying to find a match for his sister. They attend a house party, hosted by Alice. Alice is a widow. Henry and Alice had met 6 years prior but don’t remember since it was a masquerade. I loved their relationship! Alice doesn’t like Henry much after she learns he drinks, just like her husband. But I love how he uses that to further distance himself from drinking and making changes in his life. I loved watching them grow together and help one another. I also liked Henry and his sister’s relationship. Henry is also trying to discover who killed his father and who the smugglers are on the island, so there is a bit of mystery and danger thrown in. Overall, I loved this story and I definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
What a delightful Regency love story! Henry is far from the perfect man of society and his struggles are real and relatable. Attending a house party on an island for the summer with his sister, Julia, is more than just a diversion–its one full of unexpected mysteries and romance.
The gothic vibes wafting through the sea breeze were intriguing. This isn’t a fast-paced and intense book, but the schemes, hidden identities, pirates (including a mysterious “Gentleman Pirate”), matchmaking at every turn, and more kept me turning the pages, ready to solve the puzzles right along with Henry.
I reveled in all the hints of romance and honestly had no idea who to trust. Karen Thornell never fails to engage the reader with perfectly flawed characters who resonate and an engrossing plot. This one is the perfect story for Regency lovers, along with those who enjoy a good cozy mystery.
Content: mild romance; mention of a mean drunk

I absolutely adore this book!!! Windvale has everything you could ever want in a story!
There is the most gorgeous atmospheric setting at a castle on a Channel Island. How amazing is that! Plus a house party! Add in complex and vivid characters with challenges to overcome together and I was hooked! There is also a mystery to be solved and I loved trying to figure things out as I read!
The slow burn romance between Henry and Alice absolutely touched my heart. I loved watching them overcome so much, grow, and find home and happiness in each other! Their story is just so sweet and tender. I especially loved Henry’s growth and I love the way he helps and cares for Alice! The banter between them is so fun and I loved watching him try to make her laugh! Alice is just the sweetest and such a relatable and endearing character!
There are so many memorable scenes and my favorite has to be a certain beach scene and the Prologue is amazing!
This book is so intriguing with the danger, mystery, and suspenseful moments. The last part of the book had me completely glued to the pages. I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning because I had to know what would happen next!!! My heart was pounding and racing in suspense!!!!
I love how everything came together and tied up so beautifully in the end! I absolutely love these characters. Their happiness and that ending made my heart soar.
Karen has written another gorgeous book that is a must read as soon as possible! This book is truly captivating and you are going to love visiting Windvale! What a wonderful, daring, healing, and romantic adventure!!!

Content: death of a loved one in the past, grief and alcoholism to cope, danger and suspenseful moments, some violence, kisses only
First off, isn't that cover just gorgeous! I love the feeling it creates and how it captures the main heroine, Mrs. Alice Seymour, perfectly! She was a very intricate but simple character. I know that sounds very contradictory but it's true. I loved reading this book and seeing more and more facets of her character revealed. Her hows and whys! So good!!!
I also love the sweeping feeling of the ocean waves and imagining the breeze coming in. And the feel of the sand as she's walking over it. I used to live on the coast and love pictures like this that transport me back there. The whole time I was reading this book and the scenes with the ocean/beach, I felt like I was right there with the characters. The author did a wonderful job writing each scene in such a way that pulls the reader in and makes us feel like we are immersed in the story. I love her writing!!! I keep coming back every time she has a new book!!!
The storyline was very compelling as well. That opening scene. Oh my!!! Then the jump several years later and seeing how time and what happened that first night affected so much in the lives of these characters. I loved watching them meet again without realizing who each other were. You have to read that opening scene to understand. And when they finally connected the dots and realized they'd met before...happy sigh!!! Seriously I love these two. They compliment each other so well. Even through the struggles that have happened and that one or the other, or both, are working through, they are just wonderful together.
I loved the mystery, the setting, the house party, the dynamics with his sister, Alice's dynamics with her household staff, the other house guests, the island way of life and mystery that added! So many delicious elements that will have you turning the pages and that had this book feeling a little gothic-esque!
Be swept away with this beautiful and mysterious story!!! I surely was!!!
Content: Clean. Some mild peril and suspense/mystery. Some sweet kisses, nothing further. No language. Loved it!
I received a copy from the author and the publisher, Cedar Fort Publishing. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Windvale has the perfect balance of comfort, humor, suspense, and mystery. The setting is stunning—a house party held at a castle on an island in the Channel. The plot is intriguing, and the characters are delightful!
Sir Henry is especially charming. I loved his character growth and his personality. And Alice—oh, Alice—I have a soft spot for women who struggle with being perfect and living up to expectations.
Between the undercover investigation into smuggling and piracy, the constant flow of house party activities, and the slow-burn love story, this book will surely keep you hooked until the end.
Against the backdrop of a windswept island, Karen Thornell weaves a tale of spies, smuggling, and piracy that is every bit as captivating as the romance blossoming between the charming Henry Ainsley and the shy widow of Windvale, Alice Seymour. With the witty prose and delightful storytelling we have come to expect of Thornell, we experience the hope and healing of the gentle Alice, working to find herself on the heels of her husband's death, and her growing attraction to the flawed, but delightful Henry, whose surprising past makes him so much more than he seems. A must read for all fans of Regency Romance!
A delightful regency romance with a bit of redemption and mystery woven in! A fantastic addition to this series! I really enjoyed the dynamic between Henry and Alice!
I received an ARC from the author and all opinions are my own.
Though part of the Regency Love Stories series, this book can absolutely be read as a standalone—it's the type of story that quietly pulls you in and keeps you turning pages. Sir Henry Ainsley is drowning in debt and desperate to secure his sister’s future before his financial ruin comes to light. When he’s offered the chance to clear his debts by uncovering the truth behind a missing merchant ship, he agrees—even if it means stepping back into dangerous territory he thought he’d left behind.
Alice Seymour is a young widow who has no interest in love. She hosts her annual house parties out of a sense of duty. She's more comfortable helping others find happiness while keeping her own heart carefully guarded, but Sir Henry’s arrival unsettles her careful composure in the most unexpected way.
I especially loved the mystery thread running through this story. The missing ship, the smuggling, knowing that at least some in the village had to be in on it, and Henry trying to get useful information without it being obvious kept me completely invested. I liked that the chemistry between Henry and Alice built gradually. Henry's drinking reminded Alice of her deceased husband so she fought against her growing attraction to Henry, and he had to earn her trust. Every twist and turn kept me fully invested, especially as secrets from both their pasts began to surface.
Windvale is a beautifully paced romance with just the right amount of intrigue. If you enjoy indebted heroes, guarded widows, smuggling schemes, and a slow-burn love story, this one is worth the read. I received a digital copy from the author and the publisher, Cedar Fort Publishing. All opinions in this review are my own.
I am a huge fan of Karen Thornell’s books, so I was excited to dive into her newest release, Windvale. It’s the fifth book in her Regency Love Stories series, but don’t let that stop you from picking it up—I never felt lost, and it works perfectly as a standalone story.
The book follows Sir Henry Ainsley, a former spy struggling with debt. He travels to a rugged castle on the Channel Islands for a secret mission: find a missing ship and a pirate in exchange for a fresh start. To keep his mission a secret, he attends a matchmaking house party hosted by Alice Seymour, a reserved widow who is trying her best to run her own estate.
The romance between Henry and Alice is a wonderful "slow-burn." Their connection grows through quiet moments and respect rather than just instant attraction. I also loved the bond between Henry and his sister, Julia; his main goal is to protect her future, which makes him a really easy character to root for.
The setting gives off a bit of a "gothic vibe" with sea breezes and hidden dangers, and the story even includes a "Gentleman Pirate" and a series of puzzles that kept me guessing. It also touches on some deeper personal struggles, which made the characters feel very real.
Overall, Windvale is a must-read if you love a clean Regency romance with a good mystery. Whether you’ve read the whole series or are just jumping in like I did, Henry and Alice’s story is a beautiful reminder that love can be found in the most unexpected places.
****I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, NetGalley, book tours, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.****
"I do not deserve your love." She lifted one shoulder. "That must be the beautiful thing about love. It is not deserved; it simply is."
Oh I absolutely adored this gorgeous book. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC and learned that it is actually the 5th book in a series. Of course they all can be read as standalones but I decided to reread & read the previous books in the series before picking up Windvale. This is a bit of a redemption story… Henry has made some poor decisions over the years and is in an extreme amount of debt. He is offered a job to discover information on a missing merchant ship & if he can solve the mystery it might just get him the funds to pay off his debts. Plus Henry is pretty sure that the Gentleman Pirate is behind the missing merchant ship. Years ago the Gentleman Pirate killed his father so this is personal. He goes undercover and attends a house party with his sister hosted by Alice Seymour at a castle on one of the Chanel Islands. Henry is drawn to Alice who is a shy widow but things get dangerous when he uncovers a smuggling ring. I love these characters & the romance was sweet and swoony. It’s filled with of intrigue, spies, danger & hidden identities. I love a little mystery with my romance and this one will keep you turning the pages. If you love regency with a bit of mystery I’d definitely recommend picking this one up!
“Her hand caught his wrist, as if anchoring herself there. He wanted that always. Wanted to be her safe harbor for the rest of their days.”
“I do not know what I’ve done to deserve it, Alice, but this life of ours is better than any of my dreams. I adore you, Lady Ainsley.”
This forced proximity story is filled with secrets, mystery, suspense, and a beautiful romance. How can you not love a story with spies and a house party at a castle on an island!?! The mystery was wonderful and had me guessing right up to the reveal.
Henry is charming, kind, and intelligent. He had some demons to face but I LOVED his redemption arc. I really loved his work as a spy and it made the story hard to put down. I loved his relationship with his sister. Julia was amazing! I loved their care for one another, her desire to help him, and how they both wanted to see the other happy. I really enjoyed Henry’s friends Lucas and James, especially their support and help despite his treatment of them. Alice is strong, determined, and self-sacrificing. She doesn’t enjoy the spotlight but loves to make others comfortable and happy. She faced some heart wrenching revelations. I loved her growth. I enjoyed how Henry and Alice’s friendship developed, despite a few disappointments and misunderstandings. I loved their stolen moments and conversations. I loved how they came to trust one another. Their journey to a happily ever after was bumpy but so sweet. I LOVED the sweet epilogue.
A few more quotes: “You have a perfect rate of success for surviving the hard things in your life, Henry. You will survive this too.”
Then and there, might as well write his eulogy: Sir Henry Ainsley, laid down by a smile of extraordinary proportions.
“I quite like my world with you in it.”
“Imagine how different our future could be now.”
“That must be the beautiful thing about love. It is not deserved; it simply is.”
This ARC was provided by the publisher @cedarfort. I was not required to give a positive review, rating and opinions are my own.
I have loved everything I've read by Karen Thornell and Windvale is no exception. It is so good!
I'm fairly certain this book has all the makings of a great story. There's a summer house party on an island. A leading lady with a heart of gold and a hero working undercover as a spy. Smuggling, mystery, suspense, danger lurking around the corner, and plot twists you didn't see coming. Good guys you can't help but cheer for. Villains that deserve a facer. Character growth that is on point. The sweetest romance. That first kiss 😍 really what is there not to love here??
Trust me friends. This is one book you don't want to miss! I have spoken.
Many thanks to the author for the early copy; all thoughts are my own.
Such an engaging story This story is full of twists and turns, secrets, and discoveries. Sir Henry has a multitude of secrets. He was a spy. He gambled away his family fortune. He won’t tell Julia, his sister, the extent of their poverty. He is being pursued by a man he owes money to. And he now has been hired as a spy to ferret out who the Gentleman Pirate is, in hopes of restoring his finances. His current employer has arranged for Henry and Julia to be invited to a house party that would position him near the sites of the piracy. Now he finds himself trying to eliminate suspects from the large number of guests, staff, and villagers, all while working to keep Julia safe from unsuitable men, and his attraction to Alice, their widowed hostess, under control. A truly enjoyable read. I received an early copy, and this is my honest review.
Windvale by Karen Thornell is the 5th book in her Regency Romance series. Sir Henry Ainsley is drowning in debt. He has tried his vest to rectify his mistakes, but with one of the debt collectors coming for him, he is at a loss of what to do. And then one of his previous colleagues ask him to help him find information about a missing merchant ship, he reluctantly agrees. With his sister, Julia, in tow, Henry attends a house party on the Channel Islands where the ship was last seen. The house party is hosted by Alice Seymour, a reserved widow, who hosts the party to honor her dead husband and help others find love. But when she meets Henry, his charm and kindness throws her for a loop and she doesn’t know if she is ready to let someone in again.
When I learned that Windvale was Henry’s book, I was SO EXCITED! I have enjoyed him in every book and I watched him slowly become a complete dumpster fire of a man. I knew his book was going to be good. In this book you learn a lot more of Henry’s backstory and it is so INTERESTING!!! Like, oh my gosh, what? I wasn’t expecting THAT!
Henry carries trauma and lots of regret. He tries his best to protect the ones his cares about and is far too stubborn to ask for help. This backfires on him.
Throughout the book he slowly changes his damaging habits and to give himself some grace for al the mistakes he has made. He strives to be a better brother and eventually finds love.
Alice Seymour lives alone in her large house with her staff. A staff that doesn’t completely respect her. Her only confidant is her cook. She doesn’t expect to find love again. But when she meets Henry and she learns more about him, she starts to realize perhaps her marriage (although far from perfect), was worse than she thought.
Her confidence has been torn down and she is startled when Henry informs her just how wonderful she is. And she has no idea what to do with the feelings that Henry causes her to feel. She doesn’t know what to do with a man who prioritizes her.
She is a strong female lead who fiercely protects herself and her heart. She is extremely relatable. Julia needs a shout out. Like oh my gosh I LOVED her! She’s snarky and doesn’t put up with her brother telling her what to do, even if his intentions are coming from a good place. I love how even though she does take care of her brother when he is feeling particularly awful, she still calls him out. She speaks her mind and it’s fun to read her interactions with Henry.
Overall, I LOVED this book. The romance was sweet, the mystery was interesting, and the angst was wonderful! I loved how Alice is able to make Henry desire to be better and he in return shows her what real love and care is. When I read this, I was definitely laughing out loud and bouncing on my bed as I got to parts I really enjoyed!
Tropes: • Second Chance Romance • Widow Female Lead • Tortured Male Lead • Past connection • Sassy younger sister • Piracy/Smuggling • House Party • Slow Burn
Favorite Quotes: She was caught in his eyes, a deep blue to match the ocean. Caught in that gaze that for a brief moment felt familiar. Comfortable.
Given the chance, Henry could fall quite irrevocably for Mrs. Seymore. And a large part of him wanted to take the chance.
Her gaze darted to the side of the room. He was already watching her. His mouth was curved in a smile that grew as she looked away. She felt warmth rising to her cheeks and quickly looked back at Mrs. Watts. What was wrong with her?
“It’s not good for anyone to make you feel like a failure.” “I did fail, though. Many times.” “That does not mean you a failure. That means you made mistakes... No one is perfect. Believe me, I know... You are human. You are allowed to make mistakes.” She blinked away unexpected tears. “I do not know that anyone has ever told me that.” His hand constricted on her arm. “Well, now I have. And I will continue telling you until you believe it.”
A smile spread across her face, and Henry was past recovery. Then and there, might was well write his eulogy: Sir Henry Ainsley, laid down by a smile of extraordinary proportions.
“I quite like your world, Mrs. Seymour. This island, the kitchen... I think I should like to know it all.” “I quite like world with you in it.”
“...without hardly realizing what she was doing, she leaned her head against his shoulder. His chin settled atop her hair. Somehow, beneath all of the twisting and turning in her stomach and chest, there was a calmness to the moment. a feeling of peace and serenity. And something within her whispered that this, at least, was not a girlish feeling. This was real and deep. Oh heavens. She might be falling in love with Henry Ainsley.
“Do you need something?” He held out his hand, beckoning her to him. “Only you.”
A great exciting start that fizzled out for most of the book.
The prologue was interesting and capturing but after that the story takes a while to start and it feels easily put downable for quite a good number of chapters (most of the book). Sadly not much happens on page to make you excited for the next chapter.
I kept keeping hope alive though because the setting was a house party. I was holding out for the secondary characters being written in an intriguing and interesting way, which would then hopefully allow the story to pick up.
It didn't. Not until the last few chapters.
Some characters also acted very strange and it seemed to obviously be so for the sake of the plot. And it was not done in a clever way either. For example if someone appears to be very ill to the point of fainting and experiencing concerning fever symptoms for days and more so in 1800s England, wouldn't the first thought be to get a doctor with immediacy? It could be deadly for this person, not to mention possibly infectious for the rest of the guests staying at this house. But no, this does not happen. Instead the hostess continues to go about her days hosting. Then out of nowhere without using any tact, a character easily reveals something very private about someone they are close to in front of people who they barely know and who could easily spread this about and thus ruin their reputation, as though it is no big matter at all. In those days these people were very cautious about reputations. This is from a character who is written as careful and private. It just did not make sense. This happened so that the female lead could learn something about the male lead so as to put her off. Sigh...
Then there is the male lead. A major theme of this book is that he is a former spy investigating a matter that affected his life in a very cruel altering way. This makes the reader expectant of clever sleuthing and quite the high stakes for most of the story right? With how the prologue and beginning chapters were written one would not be faulted in expecting there to be exciting mystery solving. Sadly this expectations that were given to us by the author are not met for 80% of the book. In fact most of the story is barely interesting let alone exciting. The male lead barely investigates for most of the book nor does he conduct himself like someone who had been in the spy business for years.
Secondary characters are rarely a part of the story thus making the world of the book seem even flatter. And given that the story definitely suffered for a lack of more fleshed out suspects, it would have made for quite the page turner if they had more on page time. The author also does not supply us as readers with many clues in order to pull us into the sleuthing. So the case comes off as even more tepid and nothing much to remark upon.
There is also quite a lot of repetition of scenes, thoughts, and patterns of conversation. And though this is marketed as clean fiction, there are a lot of period curse words as well.
Romance is another large theme in the story. It is kind of alright but the way it is written did not draw me in as a reader or have me cheering for the pair. And when there was a third act break up it just watered it down further for me. It made the story feel cliche and didn't add much enjoyment to it.
The excitement and suspense finally made it's reappearance toward the end of the story. But because it wasn't threaded in an involving and interesting manner for most of the book, it didn't make me feel very invested in how it would wrap up.
Starting the story with such high intense stakes only for things to almost completely fizzle out for most of the book in favour of an also not very endearing romance was a big mistake. I wish the author had maintained the weight of both throughout the story. But because the execution of both was not well done, I truly did not enjoy this book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Wow! Windvale was such a compelling, utterly romantic Regency mystery! Karen Thornell delivers an enthralling story that tackles serious subjects like alcohol abuse & perfectionism alongside pirates & smuggling. The unique Channel Islands setting, delightful romance, & intriguing mystery kept me eagerly turning the pages!
Sir Henry Ainsley’s at his rope’s end. Deeply in debt no amount of gambling can fix, he must secure his sister’s future before debtor’s prison looms. When an old friend of his father offers to absolve his debts in exchange for a favor, he accepts a dangerous mission to uncover what happened to a missing merchant ship & possibly find his father’s killer. The investigation leads to a house party at Windvale, hosted by Mrs. Alice Seymour… but what happens when the unexpectedly young widow captures his interest? As danger closes in, can he catch the smugglers & find the truth in time?
Reserved & quiet Alice Seymour never enjoyed the spotlight, yet feels compelled to continue her late husband’s yearly parties. She loves matchmaking, but has no interest in love herself, one marriage was enough. But when she meets Sir Henry Ainsley, she’s drawn to the handsome, kind man. When their pasts collide, is she willing to risk her heart again?
I loved this story! The unique setting captured my imagination. Add in a thrilling mystery, pirates & smugglers, & a swoon-worthy romance, & I was hooked. Alice & Henry are so well drawn, each with struggles to overcome, & I loved seeing them learn to trust each other. The house party setting was such fun. I enjoyed trying to ferret out the smugglers & uncover the Gentleman Pirate.
I also loved Henry’s sister Julia. There’s more to her than he sees, & I can’t wait for her story. Loved Henry’s loyal friends too who offer help even when he’s determined to go it alone. And all the little moments, the secret passage to the top of the keep, water fights, kitchen escapades, masquerades, & that first powerful kiss made it even more delightful!
If you enjoy sweet Regency romance with a touch of mystery, you’ll love this! I received an advanced copy with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are completely my own & voluntarily provided.
"Sir Henry Ainsley was her world. He was her soft landing. He was home."
Windvale by Karen Thornell
Looking for a regency romance novel with mystery, intrigue, danger, and suspense that will have you guessing who the bad guys are and swooning into a puddle on the floor? Look no further than Karen Thornell's latest and greatest romance from her Regency Love Stories series!
Henry doesn't have much going for him in regards to wealth or status, but he has lots of intellect, kindness, and care for his sister and eventually, Alice. He has some really terrible habits that as the story progresses, he is able to overcome both. I thought Karen did a marvelous job of conveying his healing and redemption process. His work as a spy kept me on the edge of my seat, making the book very hard to put down. I was very surprised by the ending and how everything played out, which usually I can sometimes guess who the bad guy(s) is/are. But not with Windvale! Masterfully done!
Alice is a sweet, but very determined and strong lady who runs an estate on a channel island after her late husband passed away. I really enjoyed getting to know her as the leading lady, and I thought she and Henry were perfect for each other. I felt bad for her because things from her past are not what they seem. But I loved how everything was resolved in the end.
Speaking of the setting, it had me wanting to visit a similar island, the beach, England, etc. I felt I was whisked away to the island and Windvale with how beautifully the vistas were written.
The epilogue was probably one of my favorite epilogues. Adorable in every sense!
I definitely recommend this new regency romance filled with intrigue, spies, and hidden identities. Trust me, it will have you guessing right until the reveal at the end.

Thank you to the Author and publisher for the review copy. All thoughts are my own.
This book is part of the Regency Love series, but could be read as a standalone. I would suggest reading all of the book in the series not only because there is character crossover, but because they are such good books.
Karen Thornell is one author that if she writes it I will read it.
In this book we get Henry's story. We get to learn more about his past and how he came to be in financial trouble. We also get Alice's story. We get to see the impression that Alice and Henry's first meeting made on her - even though she isn't aware of who she met.
The mystery element kept me guessing throughout the book and I have to admit that I really didn't figure out who the main/top guy was. I figured out some of the "helpers," but not the main one.
I love the slow burn between Henry and Alice. I loved that through Henry's actions, Alice was able to start to recognize true love and is able to find moments of peace. Additionally, Alice is also able to help Henry realize that his pride was getting in his way and that it is ok to allow others to help him. I also feel that their growing relationship had Henry wanting to be better.
I really enjoyed this story and found it difficult to put down. The only thing I wish we got more of is Julia's background/story. Maybe there will be another book that focuses on Julia? 🤔
Also, make sure you get the bonus content to get Alice's perspective of their first meeting.
I received an advance copy and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Quotes: "I have you."
"Life had taught Henry one thing: things did not always work out as planned. In fact, they rarely did."
"I quite like my world with you in it."
"...it is often what people do not say that carries more significance than what they do."
"That must be the beautiful thing about love. It is not deserved; it simply is."
If you are looking for a charming regency romance set at an island house party filled with memorable characters, heartfelt moments, a slow-burn love story, and a mystery then you will certainly enjoy Windvale! Mrs. Alice Seymour is a sweet match-making hostess of an annual summer house party her husband started before his passing. She is reserved, isn’t looking for love and I felt her struggles with the demands of living up to expectations. Sir Henry Ainsley has met several setbacks in life which led him down a path of bad choices. Henry’s desperation is palpable and I felt that there was much more to his character than what you first see - I was right! I enjoyed how Henry and Alice were drawn to each other from the start, how he persisted, how they slowly opened their hearts, how he made her recognize real love, and how she made him want to be a better man. While growing and healing Henry and Alice unfortunately also deal with smugglers, pirates, and a little danger. They weather the storm, but I knew they were meant to be together and enjoyed the journey and bumpy road that got them there.
Tropes: Regency romance = danger, mystery & love = humor & heart = quite but strong heroine = redemption arc = second chance = island house party = side characters to love
My favorite things: - The masquerade ball - The setting of an island house party - The blossoming friendship - Nighttime conversations - Kitchen comforts and Martha - The beach scene - Henry’s sister, Julia - The suspense and mystery
Favorite quotes: "Then and there, he might as well write his eulogy: Sir Henry Ainsley, laid down by a smile of extraordinary proportions." - Henry
"That must be the beautiful thing about love. It is not deserved; it simply is." - Alice
This was a sweet and engaging read! I adore Karen Thornell’s books and I was excited to see Henry get his own book. He definitely had a lot of growing to do but it was sweet to read about him getting his happy ending. Windvale is the 5th book in Karen Thornell’s Regency Love Stories series. Henry definitely needed his own book and it was cool to finally get to know him better. He had been through a lot and was kind of struggling to figure out how to dig himself out of his hole. I loved his growth throughout the book. Alice was so sweet and was just trying her best. She often doubted herself but was learning to believe in her abilities. I love how they helped each other be better. I loved reading about their interactions, they had an easy connection. They both had some growing and learning to do throughout the book. Harry had to change and it was cool to see him want to be a better person. Alice learned that she was enough. They really balanced each other out and encouraged each other. It was definitely a slow burn as they worked their issues but their relationship was so sweet. The story was engaging and I wanted to see how it would end. There was so much going on and the hints of mystery were so intriguing. Henry was trying to avenge his father and Alice was just trying to throw a house party. The side characters were interesting and I loved Julia. She really pushed Henry in her own way. It was also cool to see some old characters again.I would totally recommend this book! Windvale is a clean historical romance.
Book Highlights: Historical romance Slow burn Hints of suspense Family themes Redemption House parties
Content warnings: deaths of a parent and spouse (in the past), some dangerous situations, alcohol abuse (not shown in a positive light), and difficult marital relationships.
When Henry's father was murdered, he lost his way and ended up deep in debt. In the years since, he's been doing his best to dig his way out while hiding his struggles from both his sister and the ton, for her sake - but he's never considered going back to his old role as a spy, after so tragic a failure. But when he's offered an opportunity to both repay his debts and catch his father's murderer, he agrees. Better yet, the house party might even enable his sister to find a husband and save her from the impending financial catastrophe if Henry fails in his quest. He just never counted on the hostess making him want things he can't have and providing a distraction he can't afford. Or is Alice actually all he never knew he needed?
If you enjoy straightforward romances which are all soft and squishy, this may not be for you. But if you appreciate a hard-won romance with more than a hint of mystery and spying thrown in, not to mention a painful history, this could be right down your alley. I loved watching Henry gradually transform from someone who was stuck in a hole and believed he had to be the one to dig himself out, completely without help, to someone who is ready to live life to the full and can accept and appreciate help from others. His renewed relationship with his sister is nice to watch, if somewhat rocky, but his developing relationship with Alice is beautiful - not least because of the sort of relationship she's used to and the way he cherishes her as she deserves. As for the mystery, it kept me guessing and really added to the romance - or is it the other way around? Either way, they come together to produce a great story, well rounded and a definite page-turner for me. Hoping for more in the series soon!

This was an exciting, historical, mysterious, and redemptive story. Add in a very slow burn romance, and it has everything you would want in a book. From the prologue to the ending it held me captive. I usually predict what is going to happen but this kept me guessing.
After the death of their father, Henry has had several setbacks that have put him great debt and danger. He is trying to save face for his younger sister's sake- at least until he can see her married and taken care of. Gambling, drinking, and his pride of not letting others help have wracked up more problems than he is equipped to handle. When he is invited to a house party that will last several weeks, it is a chance for him to redeem himself and his accounting, or so he hopes. When the hostess is beautiful and familiar, it changes his focus as much as he tries not to let it.
"Then and there, he might as well write his eulogy: Sir Henry Ainsley, laid down by a smile of extraordinary proportions."
The beach scene- and the fact that much of the book took place on an island had my attention- this quote is ME! "Sometimes I cannot believe that I did not grow up on a beach. It feels as if I ought to have with how at home I feel here."
I loved the brother and sister dynamic, the overcoming grief and addiction, the effort made to be a better person, the strong desire to take care of loved ones, and of course the sweet moments. If you love a good regency romance, give this a try. I have not read the others in the 'series', (YET!) but it didn't inhibit my enjoyment of the story in the slightest.
"That must be the beautiful thing about love. It is not deserved; it simple is."
Sir Henry Ainsley is barely keeping his life together, crushed under mounting debts and driven by a single goal: to secure a safe future for his beloved sister, Julia. When an opportunity arises to clear what he owes in exchange for uncovering the truth behind a missing merchant ship, he takes the risk, even though it drags him back into a world he would rather leave behind. That gamble leads him to a house party on the Channel Islands, hosted by the reserved and widowed Alice Seymour. Alice has long since set aside the idea of love. She devotes herself to hosting matchmaking gatherings for others, but Henry’s presence begins to unsettle her carefully controlled world. As their connection deepens, so too do the secrets surrounding them, and the danger tied to the missing ship becomes impossible to ignore. The romance here is a true slow burn, built on trust rather than instant attraction. Henry is an especially strong character, and his devotion to Julia was one of the highlights of the story. Their sibling bond feels genuine and heartfelt, though I did find myself wishing more was explored with her, as she was an interesting character. What elevates Windvale is the suspense threaded throughout, with the smuggling plot and plenty of twists to keep things engaging. The balance between romance and intrigue was well handled, ensuring the narrative never feels one-dimensional. An enjoyable and well-paced historical romance. I’m so happy we got Henry’s story! And I love the turn everything took with him. This series is so good!
Henry is basically at rock bottom with seemingly insurmountable debts and no hope of a reprieve when suddenly a man from his past comes upon him with an assignment. Could this be his way forward? Something to pay off the debts and start afresh, along with avenging his father’s death? What he doesn’t expect to factor into this scenario is a beautiful widow with a connection to that fateful night that changed his life all those years ago.
I liked the smuggling plot line in this book! There was a lot going on behind the scenes and I loved seeing Henry come in to investigate. And he has a whole transformation as the story progresses. His friendship with Alice is really sweet and the pacing of their relationship was good. I loved the stolen moments they shared together and seeing how their love story progressed. Each character was really in tune with the other. Henry was so caring and understanding of Alice, something she never experienced with her first husband. And Alice was forgiving and helped Henry to reach his full potential. Adding in the bit of mystery and plot twists throughout really rounded out this story so well! I enjoyed it very much. This is a great series to add to your list!
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. I was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
What a delicious regency romance full of intrigue and suspense! Yet another one of Karen’s books that did not disappoint. ✨
Sir Henry Ainsley accepts a secret assignment to discover the Gentleman Pirate who’s been raiding ships for years. Henry doesn’t feel qualified for the task but must accept in order to dig himself and his sister out of debt. When Henry and his sister get to the house party on the Channel Islands, they find secrets, smuggling, suspicious individuals, and the lovely widow, Mrs. Alice Seymour.
Henry is completely taken with Alice but knows he’s in no position to offer his hand. Alice is reluctant to open her heart and trust Henry—especially when he brings reminders of her past that she has no interest in revisiting.
Ah, I love a good romantic suspense, and this one delivered on both accounts. Henry and Alice both have serious struggles to overcome and watching them discover love is beautiful! This book can be read as a standalone but is part of a series.
✨ Gems ✨ Dual POV 💞 Julia 😏 (can’t wait for her story!!) Nighttime conversations Their first kiss 😁 Kitchen shenanigans The picnic 🫠 Learning to trust
I received and eARC from the author but a positive review was not required.
Sir Henry Ainsley meets a beautiful lady at a mascaraed ball who he just can't get out of his mind, but life interferes and changes everything. Fast forward six years. Sir Ainsley is deeply in debt and needs to see his sister secure in marriage before his life falls apart. When an unexpected lifeline appears to absolve his debts in return for information on a missing merchant ship, he jumps at the chance—though he thought he’d left such dangerous work behind him. The catch is it comes with attending a house party on the Channel Islands, hosted by Mrs. Alice Seymour.
Alice Seymour has no interest in love. Widowed and painfully reserved, she hosts her yearly matchmaking parties out of duty. But when Sir Henry arrives, his charm and quiet kindness begin to stir feelings she had long believed were too fanciful to be real. But as secrets from his past surface—and pieces of her own begin to fall into place—she is not certain she wishes to open her heart.
Although part of a series, I have not read the prior books and this can definitely be a stand alone novel. I will definitely read all the books in the series. Good, clean regency romance. I received an ARC from the Publisher but the thoughts and rating are my own.
What a beautiful story! Windvale is an enthralling and gripping romance with the perfect amount of mystery.
Amidst the backdrop of the rugged beaches of the Channel Islands, this soft love story develops.
Henry Ainsley is in desperate need of pretty much everything. He’s struggled since the death of his father and he has one last chance to solve all his problems, which brings him to Windvale.
Alice Seymour is such a lovely character. Even though she’s mistress of Windvale, she struggles with being seen as the authority in her own home. Soft spoken and wanting to please everyone, she strives for perfection.
Henry and Alice seem like complete opposites. He struggles with needing alcohol, she detests it. He’s lost all his money, she’s a wealthy widow. But through time and quiet moments they find a connection. Henry finds a purpose. Alice finds her voice. Touching emotional healing and growth is layered throughout while Henry tries to unravel the mystery of who killed his father and who is involved in the underground smuggling.
The intriguing mystery kept me guessing until the end. Just when I thought it would go a certain way, I was surprised. And let me tell you, the last 30% is a ride!!!
Thank you to Karen Thornell for the copy. All opinions are my own.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
“You have a perfect rate of success for surviving the hard things in your life, Henry. You will survive this too.”
If you’re looking for a story with intrigue, heart, and just the right touch of romance, Windvale delivers.
Set against the backdrop of a mysterious island house party, this one gives you pirates, smugglers, secrets, and a hero who is absolutely in over his head. Henry is doing everything he can to hold his life together, while Alice—quiet, guarded, and content in her carefully built world—has no intention of letting anyone disrupt it…until he does.
There’s a slow-burn romance simmering beneath it all, layered with playful moments, sharp dialogue, and a genuinely touching sibling relationship that adds so much depth to the story.
This is such a fun blend of mystery and romance, with just enough danger to keep things interesting.
If you’re ready for mystery, romance and breaking up a pirating operation this one is for you!

"That must be the beautiful thing about love. It is not deserved, it simply is."
This is a beautiful story of love and redemption. After Sir Henry Ainsley saw his father murdered he spiraled into a dark hole of drinking and heavy debts. He has been trying to crawl out without the help of anyone, his pride won't allow help. He is given a second chance to find his father's killer, the 'gentleman pirate'. He attends a long party on one of the Channel Islands trying to find out who the pirate is and guns himself investigating a snuggling ring as well. Alice is a widow of four years. She continues to throw the parties that her husband loved on the island. She is constantly putting others needs and desires ahead of her own. The majority of her servants don't respect her or follow what she says. But Henry sees through to her heart and helps her to see her value. This is a redemption story for Henry and Julia, in different ways but both important. The romance is beautiful. The mystery is so good. The characters are interesting and complex. I loved everything about this book.
I received an advanced copy, all opinions are my own.
Smugglers, pirates and spies - oh my! The story has it all. Sir Henry Ainsley, let the murder of his father, drive him to gambling, drinking and financial ruination. With collectors on his tail, he is desperate to save his sister. An opportunity to attend a house party on an island away from London, will get them away from the ton and hopefully from learning of his debts. With a smuggling ring on an island, he accepts the job to investigate and identify the ring leader and put a stop to it all. Alice Seymour has been a widow for four years. But still hosts a summer party at her island manor. The story will keep you second-guessing from beginning to end. The secrets between Henry and his sister Julia, the mystery of the smuggling, and the gentleman pirate, the obvious chemistry between Henry and Alice, are just a few of the twists and turns in this story. This is part of a series, but can definitely be read as a standalone. I have read a number of the books in the series and enjoyed them all. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
