The Kingdoms are still at war though Queen Sparrow Meadowcroft has offered peace several times.
With Queen Anika of Malveaux down for the count, her daughter Beatrice steps up with the darkness of her grandmother shadowing her.

🎧 I listened to an audiobook with access to the ecopy at the same time. The narration is performed by BJ Harrison who does the full series. His voice is deep and slow. Almost mesmerizing. Since he has performed the entire series, there is a comfort in reaching this last book with the same characters throughout.

Tense and worrying, the two ruling Queens continue their battle each believing they are right. Both have their counsel. Will it be enough? Can anyone be trusted?

The end of the fantasy.
Dark, and suspenseful. Love and family support is powerful.

Such an exciting, intense, yet fitting end to such a wonderful series. This is truly one of the best series I have read in a while. I have the e-books, the audiobooks and I will buy the physical books for my collection. I highly recommend this author as well as this series!!

Read in Order? Yes. This is Book Five, and the series should absolutely be read in order.

In a Nutshell:
A tense, dark and thoroughly exciting conclusion to a series I have loved. I finished this book in two days because I genuinely could not put it down.
The missing half-star is entirely Ro’s fault.

My Thoughts:

I thoroughly enjoyed this series, and The Shattered Crown was an absorbing and emotional conclusion. The entire series has been tense, dark and exciting, with enough danger, mystery and magical intrigue to keep me turning the pages.

So why not five stars?

Sparrow — or Ro — is simply too good. Too sweet. Too endlessly accommodating towards people who have harmed, betrayed and opposed her. They have tried to assassinate her twice, yet she continues bending over backwards to be understanding and kind towards them.

There is kindness, and then there is bending so far for your enemies that you practically fold yourself in half. Ro bends more than bamboo.

I like her as a character, but I am still not entirely sure what makes her so uniquely suited to be queen. Her compassion is clearly meant to be one of her greatest strengths, but there were moments when it became sickly sweet. I wanted her to develop a slightly sharper edge, particularly when dealing with people who have repeatedly tried to kill her.

That frustration aside, I was completely invested. What happens to Ro’s son? Does he marry? Does his cousin become the greatest wizard of his generation? Does Ro ever marry? Is Beatrice going to escape with the key?

There are far too many characters and unanswered possibilities for this world to end here. I am particularly looking forward to seeing how the younger members of the cast return, whether in another book or an entirely new series. There has to be more.

And all of that tension, emotion and romantic possibility was created without a single sex scene.
So, apparently, it is possible.

After surviving the doomed peace negotiations, Queen Ro of Summerton is trying to settle into her new role, decide how to handle the hostilities with Malveaux, and the arrival of the estranged mother. Meanwhile, Queen Beatrice of Malveaux has received a message from her grandmother encouraging and giving her new ammunition for revenge against Ro.

Great story, with a long-needed conclusion. Would have been nice to get the troll’s reaction. Though the author leaves a final statement at the end that there's the possibility of more.

Footnote: 1) I’ve often wondered about the situation when there is a single bodyguard who is there 24/7. When do they eat, sleep, bathe, etc.?

Fave scenes: Unnta taking over the sickroom, Ro's response to Bea’s letter, the new family wing, and Uldamar’s blast.

I was on the edge of my seat for a good portion of this. There were multiple things I didn't see coming and it was a delight to turn page after page until I was nearly cross-eyed needing to know what happened next. At this point even the smallest action by any of the characters could tip things in any direction and we see that throughout the book. The character development throughout the series was a joy to follow and whole series has been a wonderful and exciting ride and the ending was just as epic.

An amazing conclusion to this series, I am so sad to see it end, tho!
I feel like this one was the most suspenseful yet, and I was on the edge of my seat with each event and situation. Definitely Queen Ro's biggest challenge yet! This is such a great series, and I love the characters, I am going to miss them. But I loved how everything ended and wrapped up!!
The audio narration, as always, was exceptionally phenomenal. He gives these characters their own unique voice and brings them to life!

The Shattered Crown is the final installment of the Midlife Fairy Tale series. It is a happy ending to the series full of mystery, magic, battles, a little romance, and surprises. The story is told from the perspective of Queens Ro and Beatryce from opposing kingdoms. To is a strong FMC who is middle-aged, strong, fierce, intelligent, and just in her rule. The MMC is more of a side kick in Ro's adventure throughout the series. I was hoping to see a redemption arc for the villainous character but was happy they got what they deserved in the end. It is a real feel good read, similar to the Disney fairy tales of our youth, only grown up and contemporary.

A good story

I've read every book in the series. At its core, it is good vs evil. Love trumps hate. But, it's also about forgiveness. Being able to put the hurt aside and embrace a new start. There is no "spice". There are no expletives. No heaving bosoms. I thoroughly enjoyed each book. Good always wins.

I was sad to see that this might be the last book in this series. I have really enjoyed every one. It's got a little bit of everything.... fantasy, romance, danger and mystery and best of all a heroine who is for us older gals and not in her twenties for once!
