Boston Bobcats #2

Fire and Ice

One fake relationship, a delicious dash of chemistry, and a recipe that's bound to get messy.

Kennedy Caplan bakes the best cakes in town, but taking her business to the next level requires more than butter and grit. She’s determined to turn her dreams into something bigger, even if the odds—and her bank account—are stacked against her.

Cameron Davies, NHL goalie and resident grump, has perfected the art of shutting people out. He’s content with his small circle, until life throws him off a toxic ex back in town, teammates who won’t stop hovering, and a spotlight that refuses to dim.

His solution is as practical as it is a fake relationship with Kennedy—his sister’s friend and the one person he can’t seem to ignore. The arrangement gives her business the financial investment it desperately needs, and provides Cameron a buffer from his ex and overprotective teammates.

But what begins as a strategic arrangement soon blurs into late-night calls and sparks neither of them can deny. And the more they lean into the lie, they’re forced to face the question they’ve both been what if this isn’t fake anymore?

Fire and Ice is a spicy hockey romance with heart, heat, humor, and a guaranteed HEA. This is the second book in the Boston Bobcats series and can be listened to as a standalone, although listening in order is recommended for the best experience!

Who doesn’t love a grumpy goalie with his sunshine girl?!? This is already book #2 in the series, and each book follows a different hockey player. This one was freaking fun and spicy 🥵!! I am soooo weak for a fake dating trope, especially when the ex actually interacts with the couple, it makes it even better 😏

The plot was very simple: Cameron’s ex is back in town, and he wants nothing to do with her. So what does he do? He sets up a fake dating arrangement with his sister’s friend. Kennedy doesn’t want to, but after finding herself in a financial dilemma and with Cameron offering to invest in her bakery business, she agrees to the “relationship.”

I loved their banter and interactions from the start not only the fake dating aspect, but also how they slowly begin to get to know each other and the mini gestures they do for one another 🥹 He is celiac, and she remembers and bakes gluten free for him (agh, my heart). Meanwhile, he brings her care packages. They are both smitten from the start!!! OH and when the lines start to blur between them and things get spicy… helloooo 🔥 it was so good. The sofa scene that's all I am gonna say!!!!!

I think my favorite part of the entire book was that the ex actually played a real role. We often see fake dating used mostly as a display for others, but here, the ex truly pokes at their façade and even pulls a few “sabotages.” Literally true evil!!! It was awesome 😂 lol.

I recommend this to anyone who loves an emotional rollercoaster that gets you deep in your feels but enjoying the fluffy giddy moments as well hehe 💕 This had it all!!!!

4.5 Stars!

Better than the first, this sequel ups the ante!

This has the following…
*Hockey with teammates who let nothing slide
*Grumpy sunshine
*Unfiltered outgoing FMC with absolutely no shame
*Monosyllabic surly MMC with stalker selfish ex
*Fake dating as a favor to him
*Co-signing a loan as a favor to her
**Nice and spicy!

I mean, all fictional relationships show ideal situations of what perfect looks like, but I was genuinely moved by this slow burn with growing mutual respect and intimacy (plus communication). Both characters were great, and bonus points for making me smile and laugh often. I eagerly look forward to the next installment!

Solid hockey romance? ✅
Spicy? ✅
HEA? ✅

So we know we’re going to like it when the moody hockey player bags a cutie baker and they have a mutual beneficial armament (I can’t say fake-dating 😂) - and both of them should get what they need right? With a guaranteed HEA.. you already know they’re going to work this out so what makes this one worth reading?

The *ex*.

Our cutie, but broody, MMC Cameron has a past with serious emotional abuse from an ex. While it’s sad to read about - I LOVE how our main characters worked through his anxieties!!! Men don’t get to talk about that side enough and it’s a healthy dialogue which I loved!

HOUSEKEEPING:
* Spice: 🌶️🌶️/5
* Reader Age Suggestions: adult
* Content Warnings: triggering emotional abus3
* Kindle Unlimited: - ✅
* Part of A Series: ✅ / Can it be read alone?: yes!

summary & thoughts: ⋆˚࿔

kennedy is a baker trying to grow her business, while cameron is an nhl goalie who'd rather keep everyone at arm's length. when his toxic ex returns and the spotlight becomes too much, the two strike a deal: fake date to help him keep people off his back, while he gives her the financial support she needs to expand her bakery. but somewhere between pretending and spending more time together, their arrangement starts to feel a little too real.

i rated this 2.5 stars mainly because i went into it with really high expectations after gloves off. i'm such a sucker for fake dating, and i've read so many books with this trope, but this barely felt like fake dating to me. there wasn't enough tension or the "we have to convince everyone we're together" moments that i usually love. because of that, i never really became invested in their relationship. it wasn't a bad read, but it didn't give me the fake dating payoff i was hoping for.

i also wish the characters had been developed beyond their physical attraction to each other. while there were definitely some sweet moments between kennedy and cameron, i felt like so much of their relationship revolved around sexual chemistry instead of building an emotional connection. i wanted to know them better as individuals and really understand why they were falling in love. unfortunately, i never fully connected with either of them, which made the romance fall a little flat for me.

i will try the first book!!

Thank you Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for the ALC in exchange for my honest review. I previously read this book with my eyeballs so I was interested to see if the audiobook enhanced my experience! If you’re gonna do duel narration, you might as well do duet and I will die on this hill. Narration style aside, I liked the chemistry that both Summer Morton and Keval Shah delivered, and it did indeed add to the story for me!

3.75 ⭐️ Who doesn’t love a grumpy/sunshine romance? What started out as a fake relationship between Kennedy and Cameron developed into something very sweet, healthy, and real. The banter between the two had me giggling, the vulnerable moments had me swooning, and the group chat Cameron was in with his teammates had me howling with laughter while also piquing my interest to find out who the next book will be about!

YEP, I'm going to give this 5 stars and I don't to justify its merit, because there were was a time I would just give 5 stars to the books I enjoyed so much but then started getting more picky idk why, so let's get back to those times.

Don't question me but this book reminded me a lot of one of my favorite books of all the time which is "Caught Up" by Liz Tomforde maybe it's because our main characters are literally a athlete and a baker or because they delivered a romance as good but I'm absolutely in love with this book as well.

First of all I absolutely love this team, I'm always laughing with Logan he is such a goofy character i wish he had gotten his own book, and all the other players are also such amazing characters so I'm happy we will at least get two more books and then the coach's book. But also i love the girls and how they all are different than each other which brings more representative vibes to this group.

So ofc i loved our main characters Kennedy & Cameron, they are literally the definition of the tittle of this book "Fire and Ice". Cam is the grump of the time, and well Kennedy is such an enthusiastic character with a very peculiar personality and humor that I absolutely adored.

I think without doubt I would have read this book in one sitting if had the time, the romance is just absolutely the best that had me immerse in this story, and with so many cute and funny moments, and of course very sweet (not our fmc being a baker) it was impossible this would be anything but such a fluid, easy, fun read!!

I know I gave this one and book 1 both four stars, but I enjoyed this one more. I felt more connected to Cameron and Kennedy. They had this simmering chemistry that was done SO well. I loved watching them both basically ignore each other because they knew that if they let the other person in their walls would come down. I love me some grumps and let me tell you Cameron was a GRUMP. BUT he was that way because of his past. He was SUCH a cinnamon roll *fake* boyfriend. I mean he sent Kennedy period care packages!! And then we had Kennedy who was SO impressively not ashamed of being herself EVER. She was loud and brash and hilarious and loved HARD. I loved the fake dating that got confusing with lines being crossed and them both wanting more. I loved watching them both slowly lower their walls for each other. I REALLY loved how there was no third act breakup. How much they both supported each other and wanted the best for the other. They were just great.

Cameron has his walls up for a reason. The woman he thought he wanted more with thoroughly HURT him, hence the walls and no relationships. But now his ex is back in the city and has set her sights on reuniting and righting her wrongs. Which is how Cameron ends up in a fake dating situationship with Kennedy. The woman he has been avoiding because he just KNOWS something could happen between them. She kind of scares him. And yet he is going to be the best fake boyfriend. He lets her use his kitchen. He sends her care packages. He takes her on nice dates. And all of a sudden this isn't feeling so fake anymore. Cameron finds himself wanting to do things to make her smile because he wants to not because he feels obligated. He finds himself wanting to kiss her. He has actually wanted to do that for a while but now he thinks she would let him. He finds himself wanting to protect her and support her and shout from the rooftops that she is his but like for real. But before that he wants HER. And lines get blurred in the best way. He has never experienced anything like this with someone. Trust and support. And so he lays it out there. He wants this to go places. And even when his ex tries to step in and make things out of nothing, Cameron knows that him and Kennedy will be solid because at the end of the day he loves her. And he would do anything for her.

Kennedy can't believe she is being turned down for a loan. She has everything she thought she would need and yet it wasn't enough. She knows she could be successful. She knows she could take her baking to the next level. She needs a miracle which is where Cameron Davies steps in. Her best friend's boyfriend's teammate. The hot, grumpy goalie. They decide to enter into a fake relationship that will help them both. He wants his ex off his back, and she needs a backer. What she appreciates about Cameron here is that he believes in her. And so here they are going on dates and holding hands and acting like they like each other when in reality they haven't interacted all too much. It's like they both knew that things would be serious if they did because Kennedy can't deny this attraction she has for him. She can't deny that now that she is getting to know him his grumpiness kind of makes sense. And how he is actually a genuinely nice person. He shows up for her time and time again, and she starts to realize that this is beyond something a fake boyfriend would do. And she realizes she doesn't want it to be fake. What they share together is too special. Too real for it be anything else. And when Cameron's past tries to get between them, she knows it won't matter because they have a solid foundation at this point. And she knows he believes in her.

I think my only challenge with this one was the plot with his ex happened at the end and then just kind of fizzled. I am wondering if we will learn more about that in the next book? Overall though I would recommend this for a perfectly paced, hockey romance with two MCs who find their person. I am looking forward to book 3- I am calling the playboy with Cameron's sister maybe??

Thank you to Valentine PR and Carly for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

When i finished the first book in this series I went straight to the next because Cam was such a joy to read. And his meeting with Kennedy was gold. He knows Ken is very 'grrr' so when Cam ex comes crawling back and try to win a date with him he asks her to bid on him. She does and they do go on that date. Its cute they have things in common and she makes sure the restaurant has gluten-free meals for him. It should have been the end of that but that ex keeps popping up and Cam does not want to be around her or get back together so he ask Ken to fake date him and he'll front money so she can get her kitchen/bakery off the ground. Win/win for both. And they were cute there relationship started off fake and turned real pretty fast.
I love that Ken stood up for her man and made sure the ex didn't scare her off. Or the drama she tried to pull at them.

The spice was good not to spicy and not to eh. We got a glimpse of the next couple. Or maybe couple.

Fake dating will always get me, especially when it’s sunshine meets grumpy. This dynamic was done so well, and I was hooked from the start.

From their very first date, I knew they were it. The way she kept the conversation flowing while also being so thoughtful about his celiac? I was already sold. And then he turns around and gets her a period care package?? Yeah… they’re both just incredibly intentional and caring in a way you don’t always see, and I loved that so much.

His vindictive ex can absolutely kick rocks because she was the worst. Truly. I hope she enjoys all those phone calls.

The found family in this story was everything. Between the team and the FMC’s friend group, it added so much heart. And I will never get tired of a chaotic hockey boys group chat.

ALC Review 🥰

Narrators:
Keval Shah
Summer Morton

Duet style: No

This was my first time listening to an audiobook by both of these narrators and I thought they did a fabulous job. I especially liked Summer’s voice for Kennedy. Kennedy was very witty and sarcastic and Summer really nailed her personality. I sometimes find female narrator voices irritating , but hers was great. Keval also did a great job as the grumpy goalie. Every time he narrated Logan’s lines I would crack up. He had a different voice for each character which was helpful because there’s a lot of banter between the teammates.

The story as a whole was fantastic. Kennedy’s character was hilarious. She was super witty and had some amazing one liners. I truly loved her personality—-she didn’t GAF 🤣

I also loved the random broadway drops. I love broadway musicals so the Rent and Hamilton references made me happy.

Safety:
Safe: Yes
OW/OM drama: OW drama— his ex GF plays a big role. She’s the reason he needs a fake girlfriend. She causes problems between the two of them but he has 0 interest in her anymore.
Cheating: his ex gf cheated on him with a former teammate
3rd act breakup: no
Celibate after meeting: it isn’t stated but definitely since their first date.

I absolutely adored Cameron and Kennedy! I love a grumpy x sunshine moment and Cameron was suuuch and a grumpy goalie. Kennedy was hilarious with her take no BS attitude and her constant need to get Cameron chatting and answering her random questions. I was hooked on this story from the very beginning and enjoyed every moment of this book.

Can I also just say that I loved Kennedy's attention to Cameron's celiac needs? It's such a small but monumental show of love and support for him. Cameron is also so observant of Kennedy's needs and makes sure to show her. These two are so intentional about their love and support for each other and I love that so much. May this kind of love hit me like a fright train.

This was the perfect follow up to book one in this series! This set of characters are all so fun and lovable! I can't wait to see where the rest of this series goes.

This was my first Carly Robyn read, and I get why my friends love her work!

This story follows Cameron, whose cheating ex, Gigi, won’t stop trying to rekindle their relationship. To make matters worse, she’s family with the team owner. In desperation, Cameron says he’s dating Kennedy, the winner of a charity date. In order to keep up appearances, they agree to fake date so Gigi will move on, and Kennedy gets help with her baking business.

I love a direct and growly man. I did think Gigi messed him up by cheating, but literally, who would hold that against him? I loved how he initially wanted to fake date Kennedy to run interference with his ex, but it slowly progressed into so much more. I love that he found someone who cared for him for who he is as a person.

I respected Kennedy’s choices. It must have been so hard to leave law school to pursue her passion for baking. I could understand why accepting help from Cameron would feel like a cop out or why she would be concerned that his stardom might overshadow her success. I also loved how attentive she was to Cameron’s needs. She was always so in tune to him, which I loved for them both!

Gigi was wild! She was giving Fatal Attraction crazy. Some of the things she did were straight up savage. The way the story unfolded for her was very satisfying!

The book was dual narrated by Summer Morton and Keval Shah. I think they did an amazing job! They were both vocally clear and expressive, and I especially enjoyed their moments of intensity!

Thank you to NetGalley, Valentine PR, and Dreamscape Media for an ALC in exchange for my honest opinion.

ARC REVIEW
Star rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Firstly thank you to Valentine PR and Carly Robyn for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC and giving an honest spoiler free review.

I was hooked from the first chapter. I love a dual POV and fake dating AND grumpyxsunshine sign me up. The banter between these two was absolutely everything!!! I couldn’t get enough and the spicy scenes my lord it’s hot in here. The character development and bond that built through out the story. Even though their relationship was fake they never stopped being there and supporting each other.

I could no stop laughing the bobcats team is hilarious. I could not stop laughing Jake and Logan were two of my favorite characters could not get enough of them!! The friendship the team had and the found family among all of them was heartwarming.

I love how Kennedy had a dream and she never gave up on it even when times got tough. I relate to her so much I myself am obsessed with the real housewives of Beverly Hills. she’s one of my favorite FMC’s as of now!!

I’ve read a few hockey romances and they just did not hit for me but this book HIT. THE. SPOT.!!! I loved it I’m obsessed and can’t wait for everyone to read about these two!!

Hockey goals. Goalie goals. Boyfriend goals. This book delivers on all of them.

It was pure perfection packed with laugh-out-loud moments, soft and tender scenes that hit you right in the feels, top-tier banter, and just the right amount of revenge on an ex to keep things extra satisfying.

Every piece of this story worked, and I was completely hooked from start to finish, to the point I didn’t want it to end.

Cameron needs his ex to back off, and the only solution he can come up with is pretending to be in a relationship. He asks Kennedy to fake date him, and in return, he'll help finance her business.

Kennedy is bold, hilarious, and never misses an opportunity to throw some witty banter Cameron's way. His quiet, broody personality is the perfect contrast to her outgoing nature, and watching her slowly coax him out of his shell was so much fun. They're complete opposites, but they complement each other perfectly. As their fake relationship develops, they become incredibly in tune with each other's needs, often knowing exactly what the other needs without a word being spoken.

Summer Morton and Keval Shah absolutely nailed Kennedy and Cameron's relationship dynamic as it evolved from fake dating into something real. They also brought Kennedy and Cameron’s personalities to life so perfectly.

This was such a fun and sweet romance. It's definitely one you'll want to add to your TBR!

CamKen

I'm catching glances as I burst out laughing at some of the antics, burns, and general teasing. 🤣🤣 It's worth every suspicious look.

Cameron (Cam, baby cakes) Davies and Kennedy Caplan are gold! I love his possessiveness of her and her trust in him. He's all grumpy, but she makes him softer. It's sweet and tender and a bit swoon worthy.

"I'm no Stavros, but I can still fuck like a porn star."
-- Cameron Davies

The banter between them and with their friends is absolutely fantastic! It keeps me rolling with laughter.

Things get a little dramatic and serious on occasion, but a good portion of this is lighthearted and extremely entertaining. I love their unwavering support for each other when things do go awry. It's awesome and makes me love them even more.

I listened to the audio book. The narrators are Summer Morton and Keval Shah. They have terrific delivery and are great for their primary characters, but I really wish they are in duet. 🎧🧡🎧

First of all thank you to ValentinesPR and the author for the e-arc of the book!

I was so excited to start reading this book. I'll always love a hockey romance. The book got me right away. I was invested right from the start. The fake-dating also was so so good. I loved the dynamic between Kennedy and Cameron.

Don't get me started on Cameron, what a cutie. He and Kennedy, love it. The friendship and the romance was so so good. I really love how Carly wrote them and how we see Cameron opening up to Kennedy and the other way around.

I haven't read the first book, but I definitely will because I ate this one up. Also can't wait for the next book to come out.

I highly definitely reading this book if you want a: grump x sunshine, fake-dating, hockey romance kind of book.

But beware there is some explicit content in this book.

I got to ARC read Fire and Ice by Carly Robyn and I’m absolutely obsessed with this book. 🤩

From the very first page I was completely invested in both Kennedy & Cameron and needed to know what was going to happen next. Kennedy instantly became one of my favourite characters because she’s so funny and passionate about the things she loves, which made her feel really genuine and easy to connect with. Cameron soon followed after, he’s definitely got a special place in my heart. I loved seeing him open up to Kennedy throughout the book. 🩷

The pacing was perfect the entire way through and it kept me hooked from start to finish. Honestly, I would’ve loved to read this in one sitting because every chapter made it impossible to put down. 😂 This was such a fun and addictive read and I already know I’ll be thinking about these characters for a long time. 🙂‍↔️

Tropes:

I’m not sure why I waited so long to read a book by Carly Robyn, but I’m glad I finally did. An all around very solid hockey romance. It’s pretty low stakes but that is what I was needing for a read. Fake dating is always so much fun even though I know exactly how it’s going to play out every time. The little things the characters would do for each other to prove they were paying attention to the likes and needs was sweet. I didn’t really connect with the fmc as she is very much the opposite of me, but it was still a fun read.

🤭 fake dating
🌤️ grumpy (him) / sunshine (her)
✨ strangers to lovers
🥅 hockey
👏🏻 no third act breakup

dual POV
4/5 stars ⭐️
2/5 spice level 🌶️

The grumpy goaltender for the Boston Bobcats, Cameron, proposes the plan to pretend to date Kennedy in return for Cameron investing in her bakery. Kennedy accepts since it would allow her to at last reach her goals. I adored Kennedy's sense of humor and honest nature. Their romance was beautiful, funny, spicy, and amazing. The teammates' text exchange was another thing I really enjoyed, but above all, reading about Cameron and Kennedy was a lot of fun. I adore this series and can't wait for more.

Kennedy Caplan is in the Bobcat hockey world now. Her best friend is now dating a player and the baker is finding herself around a lot of hockey players.

Especially Cameron Davies. Cameron is the team's goalie and he has a problem. His ex is back. His ex who broke him. His ex who is related to the teams owner. She cheated on him and now is back. And is aggressively pursuing him.

Cameron asks Kennedy to bid on him during a team auction and the "date" she wins ends... well, can't spoil it. But Kennedy is shocked to hear back from Cameron who has a proposition. Pretend to date him, and he'll financially back her dreams bakery. Win, win?

Kennedy is such a free spirit. I think that whatever she thinks comes immediately out. No filter. And Cameron? He's definitely grumpy energy. Not as free as Kennedy. How in the world can they make this work?

They really tore down the walls in this one. Kennedy shows Cameron what a good woman is.

Now there is a book one, but this can be read as a standalone!

This book is the epitome of a 3 star MAYBEEEE even 2.5 stars dare I say. I thought it was going to be good based on the cover??? Never judge a book by its cover ya'll!!!!!!!!! 🤣🤣 Anyways, this book is a fake dating trope. He's the star hockey player and she's a baker yada yada. I did love the bakery vibe, you don't see it very often but I loved it! This book was just cringe, like 50% of it. I cannot get past that personally. There are some books where being cringe is the vibe and that's what makes it good, but not this one. Cameron, the MMC, was honestly just too grumpy for me. Can't believe I'm saying that. He was a grumpy character NOT in an attractive way. Like just being closed off and a dick because he can be?? There was no jealousy, posssiveness, anger, like we're missing the key components of a five star grump here. Also, it felt like all of a sudden he just liked her. There was no tension and no buildup. Kennedy was a good FMC. Not great, but good. Her personality was fierce and spunky, and I liked how confident she was. HOWEVER 🚨 dare I say... she was too much. I know, I know. I can't say that about a women, but she is FICTIONAL and it is TRUE. It actually got exhausting reading about her because it was so cringe, like the author just wanted to throw her in my face for fun. Like??? OK. Anyways, I am giving this book 3 stars because the plot was decent, just missing that tension and emotion. Won't re-read though.
