I had the opportunity to be an ARC reader for this book and loved the ride.
It’s a unique, punchy read following Amos, our flawed protagonist, and his daily on-goings as a young man acutely unable to control his emotions and actions.
I love the grounded realism that’s flecked with moments of the bizarre, surreal, and introspective. There’s times where there’s a real separation in reality that’s written in a way that had myself doubting at times what is true and what is not.
I also enjoy the uniquely soft moments of the book. Overall the tone is grounded and somewhat gruff/tough, but then there’s these profound moments where Amos makes an aside to appreciate the beautiful and delicate.
It’s a quick read with a fast pace, particularly towards the latter half of the book. There isn’t a lot of fluff so you get right to the point.
If you’ve read and enjoyed Bukowski or Salinger, I highly recommend you check this out!

Some stories don’t pull punches they land them.
Rounded Knuckles is a gritty, emotional novel that feels raw in the best way possible. From the opening pages, J Jimenez Monaco throws the reader into a world where strength isn’t just physical it’s about survival, resilience, and the scars people carry with them. The story has an intensity that keeps you turning the pages. It explores themes of struggle, identity, and the moments that shape who we become. The writing feels grounded and honest, giving the characters a sense of realism that makes their victories and hardships hit harder. What I appreciated most was how personal the narrative feels. It’s the kind of book where every conflict matters, every choice has weight, and every moment of growth feels earned. This isn’t just a story about fighting it’s about what it means to keep standing after life knocks you down.
If you enjoy character driven stories with grit, heart, and emotional depth, this one is definitely worth checking out.

The author does an immaculate job with descriptive text that really creates a full scene in your head. Got through this one quick because I didn’t want to put it down! As a first publish, I’m astounded. Can’t wait for future reads!
