I don't know ... I feel guilty about how much I love Neil Simon's plays. Maybe I shouldn't feel guilty, but I do.
Why shouldn't I? Well ... he's a pretty insightful playwright at times, his comic timing can be amazing, and when his characters enter autobiographical terrain they can climb mountains.
But Plaza Suite -- despite the amazing cast in this L.A. Theatreworks audio performance (Marsha Mason was the best, Ed Asner was the most disappointing, and JoBeth Williams was the most insufferable) -- is pretty bad. Two of the three scenarios are dated; the performances are dated; the dialogue is dated; the jokes rarely land; and the Neil Simon voice just gets lost in an avalanche of whining and complaining.
Hang on ... that's what all his characters always do! That's true, but it's not always so obvious.
