The book is really a thoughtful and uplifting read about growing older with confidence, curiosity, and a renewed sense of purpose of life and factors of life.
What makes the book interesting is that it doesn’t treat ageing as something that needs to be fixed or hidden. It doesn't make it sound like a taboo which society does in every other story. Instead, it encourages us to see it as a natural part of life, with its own beauty, freedom, experiences and opportunities.

I particularly enjoyed the personal stories of women who have experienced very different journeys. Their experiences with coming of age, relationships, divorce, difficult marriages, loss, self-discovery, and starting over add honesty and integrity to the book. Some stories are emotional, while others bring in humour and warmth, making the reading experience feel very human and personal as a woman.

The discussions around society’s obsession with looking young were also thought-provoking and real.
The book questions why we are so afraid of wrinkles, changing appearances, and getting older when ageing also brings wisdom, confidence, knowledge, and a better understanding of ourselves and a better understanding of life.

I loved the message that we don’t have to spend our lives wishing to be younger. There can be something beautiful waiting in every new chapter.

And a little spotlight on my favourite quote from the very first chapter: “You need to make mistakes, otherwise you don’t learn.”- Helga
So human, so real, and so thought-provoking. It’s such a simple line, yet it carries a beautiful reminder that our mistakes are not failures, they’re part of how we grow and how we learn and how we evolve in ourselves.

The writing is simple, conversational, and filled with real-life perspectives and experiences. The stories made me pause and think about how differently we could look at ageing and life, not as an ending, but as another opportunity to live, learn, explore, and enjoy ourselves.

PS:- This one hit especially close to home because I, too, lost my best friend to suicide. Some losses change you forever, and the emptiness they leave behind never truly feels ordinary. So, when they shared their stories of loss, my heart felt heavy too.

This book "Your Joyful Years" is the book that tells a reader about the beauty of being a woman in joyful years, above 50.

It is a must read for all women especially above 50. It's a truly empowering read. Women should have this book in their library. The book describes different things that women go through and how to be strong, joyful, happy in every age.
The author has done deep research on different subjects like how creativity boosts mental health, about menopause, perimenopause, post menopause, to name a few.
The opinions of women on different topics is what makes this book standout.
A Healthy Mind for a Healthy Life: Manage Stress, Mood and Wellbeing chapter is written in profound way. Different things like depression, anxiety, trauma based incidents, psychotic disorders, etc all add up to mental health. The way the author describes each of the terms kept me hooked in this book. Truly, mental health is as important as physical health.

“Women at midlife enter a sensitive time and if our lives are out of balance, we’re more likely to experience some kind of mental health challenges. Our focus should be on how to restore balance, not ‘fix’ hormones.” Tania E

The way author has described about HRT, CBT, etc is remarkable
I also loved the part where author described how having hobbies is beneficial for improving health.

The importance of physical exercise and activities for boosting mental health is described in the book that kept me hooked to the book.

Author has described how creativity has various health benefits. Can't get enough of it. Truly, creativity is nothing but a mental health booster.

The author has also described how adventure gives adrenaline rush and how challenges help us to grow in life. The benefit of relaxing in nature is also described beautifully, and various other topics are well-described.
I recommend every woman to read this book.

This is a much needed and really uplifting and reassuring read about aging. Instead of focusing on what we lose as we get older, the book highlights everything we can still gain... joy, purpose, and fulfillment.
The writing is clear and approachable, and it feels like the author genuinely wants readers to feel hopeful about the future.
I appreciated how it blends science with real-life advice in a way that doesn’t feel overwhelming.
It’s a comforting reminder that getting older doesn’t mean slowing down, it can actually be one of the most meaningful stages of life.

Your Joyful Years by Professor Joyce Harper brings us a warm and encouraging book that highlights aging and growing older but also shifts the outlook in a positive way.

Throughout the book, she emphasizes that the later years can still be full of growth and happiness and not a means to the end.

The tone is friendly, she comes across as supportive and like she is giving advice.

She gives realistic ways to stay engaged and positive as you age. It's the kind of book that makes you rethink aging.

I found Your Joyful Years to be both informative and inspiring. It challenges a lot of the negative ideas people have about aging and replaces them with a more balanced, hopeful outlook.
The author does a great job of combining research with relatable insights, so it never feels too technical.
What stood out most to me was the message that joy and purpose don’t have an expiration date.
