I was not going to read this second in a series of three but this book was gifted to me by Loren. Please note that this is not a standalone book. And while I do not mind content of a sexual nature (This book has none.) I do mind domestic violence!!! And on top of all that are the coarse and rude manners displayed by members of genteel society.

For me this story moved forward slowly. Part of this is a result of the time between reading the first book and finally picking up this second part of the story. The book itself is a short novella; one which really could have united the first and/or the third together to make a complete book at a more reasonable overall price for most readers. Darcy and Elizabeth are finding throughout events many frustrations to not only announcing their engagement and forwarding their marriage ceremony but also just in trying to meet together. Vile accusations as well as punishments result as various persons accuse ODC of immoral behaviors.

Things at Longbourn are not at all comfortable and many there continue to walk on eggshells. DO NOT MENTION a certain sister who is now disowned it seems.

The Colonel is playing his part in Darcy’s plans to obtain his heart’s desires, but Richard has his own motivations as well as the desire to help his cousin. Much of this story concerns slinking around and acting the part of roles to throw Lady Catherine, Mr. Collins and others off the scent. There is also the treatment of a family of tenants who have fallen on harsh times and for whom Elizabeth has to use deceit in order to give help. A Parson can’t give charity – oh, no, never!

Back in London, dastardly Wickham and his all-so-naïve and, frankly, stupid wife, Georgiana act as if brother, Fitzwilliam is never returning home. Caroline makes use of that situation with a show of gutsy behavior. Then in another act of abuse as part of the script, Wickham charges his friends to…WHAT?! No author has used this act in a variation. Here I was quite frankly dismayed that such was part of the story.

The author has some new ideas and it is obvious she is striving to use creative phrases in her writing but at times the style was confusing and then there was also little attention to editing. In my opinion, this story would have benefitted by time taken to fill in the background and give us more details in the ongoing events and motivations for such. We still do not have our couple united in Holy Matrimony.

This book is simply fabulous! It is a Pride & Prejudice variation that is wildly and wonderfully off canon. Many of the characters are darker versions, some are evil. But it is absolutely engrossing!! Picking up where book 1 ended, Darcy is in Kent, Georgiana and her husband are in Bath, Jane & Bingley are ending their wedding trip and Lizzy is headed for the Hunsford Parsonage. The Bennets are still estranged from Lizzy, and Caroline is still plotting to catch Darcy. Loaded with Twists, turns and terror.

This is a quick satisfying read that makes you yearn for the next book in the series.

Note: There are some very disturbing themes in this story that may concern sensitive readers including spousal abuse and physical abuse.

Never say never...

I was determined to not continue in this series. There were the usual price concerns over these novellas, and the fact they just keep coming with no resolution in sight. These novellas are not stand-a-lone and we are given just enough information [soap opera style] to make us want to read the next one.

This book did a pretty good job of not jumping about. The transition from one location to another was fairly smooth and I was able to keep up. We spend time in Kent, London: Darcy House, and Matlock, Hertfordshire: both Longbourn and Netherfield.

In Longbourn Elizabeth has be thrown out of her home for disobedience and refusing to follow her father’s request and marry Mr. Collins. She goes to London to live with her Aunt and Uncle Gardiner. She takes a job in his factory and is able to make a little money.

There are several story threads to follow and at times it gets pretty muddy as they line up so that they can flow into the next book: Darcy and Elizabeth, Georgiana and Wickham, Caroline, Jane and Charles Bingley, The Bennet’s, Lord and Lady Matlock and their first born son, Kent: Lady Catherine, Colonel Fitzwilliam and Anne, Mr. and Mrs. Collins. Then there are the intrigues to follow: Wickham’s attempts at getting at Georgiana’s dowry, and Caroline attempts at securing Darcy [still???].

I am sick to death of Georgiana and Wickham. She is AWFUL…awful. Talk about shrewish, biting, and bitter tongue. She is a b***h to the ninth degree. I won’t do a spoiler, so just read it. There were editing problems, only caused a slight pause in my reading as I tried to figure out what the author was saying.

3.5 rounded up to 4 stars

NOT a stand-alone.

I've read the previous book in this series, but it was a while back and I didn't remember the details. There are five books total and this is only the second volume, so this is quite the saga.

So far at least, it's quite a dark saga. Mr. Bennet is a bitter, unreasonable man and resists any attempt at reconciliation with Elizabeth, who's been cast out of Longbourn. Georgiana is now Mrs. Wickham, and her life is certainly not the fairy tale she was expecting. Her husband systematically strips the Darcy town home of its valuables so he can invest in a quick-rich scheme.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth and Darcy are both in Kent - Elizabeth was happy to accept Charlotte's invitation as an excuse to be near Darcy, though it's difficult to be so close and pretend they mean nothing to each other. Also, Colonel Fitzwilliam and Anne de Bourgh are scheming to marry under Lady Catherine's nose. TRIGGER WARNING: Mr. Collins is an abusive husband to Charlotte and equally abusive to Elizabeth when she doesn't show what he considers proper deference to his directives.

Elizabeth continues to be implausibly foolish and confrontational. I would never ever suggest that she "asks" for abuse, but she already knows from previous experience with Mr. Collins that he's dangerous. She knows he's unreasonable, so she isn't going to convince him he's wrong; she isn't strong enough to fight him; and she doesn't have a man present for protection. I'd think Elizabeth would be smart enough to refrain from getting in his face.

It's a major soap opera where some storylines do resolve but others are left hanging, to be continued in the next volume. The writing is good but not great, with a number of editing errors sprinkled about. Some dialogue sounds wooden and unnatural.

I doubt I'll continue through this series even though this is an interesting story.

It has been three years since I read the first book 'By Consequence of Marriage'. I gave it 3 stars as it hadn't 'emotionally grabbed me'.

At the beginning of 'A Virtue of Marriage', "Ms. West writes a brief letter to her readers. After reading this letter, it appears, in my humble opinion, that this series is a cathartic outlet for her to understand or at the least come to terms to what she has personally been touched by. That is difficult indeed.

"The nasty truth of life is violence. During the writing of 'A Virtue of Marriage', my own life was touched personally by the subject of domestic abuse in too many ways." (quote from the letter)

Based on this letter, my approach to the book altered somewhat and makes reviewing it a bit harder. Unfortunately, though, the Elizabeth Bennet rendered within this story, is out of canon for me. She giggles and skips like a young girl, like Lydia for goodness' sake! I found her more irreverent than impertinent. Needless to say, I was frustrated with her. What she has been through and what she continues to go through, would not result in the above attitude. Yes, Elizabeth's courage always rises against whatever intimidates her, but for me, not in this way.

The 'high drama', which I like as much as the next person, continues in this story. The dark side of Regency married life is at the forefront. Physical and mental abuse is inflicted not only on Charlotte Collins, but Elizabeth Bennet as well. Georgiana has her fair share of it but in a different way. I wasn't sure about this Georgiana in the first book, but now she is completely lost unless someone can truly help her.

I know I may have given 'a spoiler' with the above paragraph, but better to be forewarned than not. As I said, I had difficulty rating this one. I have enjoyed Ms. West's other books/series, 'Seasons of Serendipity' being one of those series.

Well, I have book three sitting in my Kindle, so I will continue to see what happens next with this story as each ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, and I know there is a book four out with more to possibly come.

The story marches on

SPOILERS

Lizzy suffers concussions at the hand of Collins. Massive bruises, perhaps cracked ribs. It’s ODC, the Colonel, the Gardiners and the Bingleys (not Caroline) against the world.

I have no idea how the author plans to keep Lizzy and Darcy alive throughout the endless books of the series.

The writing is good quality but the story is horrendous. The series is like the TV show Game of Thrones, one awful episode after another.

Not my cup of tea..which in the books would be drugged or poisoned.

A Virtue of Marriage: A Pride and Prejudice Variation (The Moralities of Marriage Book 2)

Continuation of Book 1 The Consequence of Marriage. Knowing that Darcy was at Rosings in Kent, and that she had an invitation to visit the parsonage, she wrangled an invitation to travel with her maid and Colonel Fitzwilliam. Arriving at Rosings, Richard is anxious to see Darcy's reaction to the surprise. Unfortunately, the brutish parson has acquainted her Ladyship with her nephew and Elizabeth's relationship while at Netherfield when he visited Longbourn. Immediately, Lady Catherine called for the whore's (her feelings for Elizabeth) removal from Rosings. Meanwhile back in London, not only was Wickham selling everything from the townhouse of Darcy, but was having Georgiana, under the pretense of remodeling the home to suit her, arranged for items from Pemberley to be sent. Letters between the housekeepers keep Wickham thwarted, but he can up with selling his wife for favours. Georgiana is miserable, but to silly and stupid to admit her wrong in marrying Wickham. Caroline has become her houseguest for all the wrong reasons still thinking she's going to win Darcy. Another stupid idiot of a woman. Well, there's actually four if you count in Lady Catherine and Mrs Bennet to the rank of stupidity. Lord and Lady Matlock travel to Rosings since Richard's mother has figured out what was happening at Rosings between the three cousins. Too late, but Richard Fitzwilliam put his father in his place. Now the master and mistress of Rosings, Mr and Mrs Richard Fitzwilliam, could bring Lady Catherine out of sedation for she now becomes the Dowager of Rosings no longer its mistress. At the parsonage, the brutish parson, slaps Elizabeth and then beats her with a riding crop. Battered almost beyond recognition, she scrambled towards the Holbein's farm, the family she's been helping against Collins and Lady Catherine's desires. Seeing Elizabeth's condition, Peter is sent to the big house for Mr. Darcy. When Darcy sees Elizabeth, his anger is almost beyond his control. When Lord and Lady Matlock sees Elizabeth, her ladyship passes out. Reviving, she offers her support to Elizabeth, and offers Declan, her protector, to accompany Darcy and Richard Fitzwilliam, telling them if they don't kill the parson to leave Declan there to protect Mrs Collins, because Elizabeth is worried about her. Afraid to stay at Rosings for fear Lady Catherine will find a way to harm her further, Elizabeth convinces him to remove her to London at Darcy House. Knowing everything that been going on at Darcy House, he has Wickham thrown out. Georgiana, his bitch of a sister, yells at him and makes nasty comments about Elizabeth. When he tells his housekeeper to put her in a guest suite on his floor, Georgiana tells him that Wickham and Caroline are in those rooms so Darcy has her placed in the mistress chambers. When both bitches react, Darcy tells them both to leave his house; Georgiana to follow her worthless husband and Caroline to get out of his and Elizabeth's life. After discussing their marriage, when Dr. Matthews allows Elizabeth to travel, they will set out for Gretna Green with Jane and Charles as witnesses. On to Book 3 The Blessings of Marriage.

Book 2 is the series starts off that Darcy and Elizabeth are secretly engaged while Darcy is still appearing to be engaged to Anne until a marriage between Anne and Colonel Fitzwilliam can be secretly arranged. Elizabeth is still estranged from her family and continues to reside in Cheapside with her aunt and uncle until she receives an invitation from Charlotte to visit Hunsford. Elizabeth jumps at the opportunity to be close to Darcy knowing he is at Kent waiting for his cousin to arrive. I was still shocked at how Mr Bennet and Mr Collins continue to treat Elizabeth - it just seemed so wrong to me. Mr Collins ends up being even worse of a man than we already thought. Georgiana's relationship with her husband Wickham is being exposed and yet she is still convinced of his love - so delusional. Her character shocked me also.

I was shocked at the portrayal of physical abuse in this novel and hence my 4 star rating.

The book ends at a possible joyous occasion arising making all want to read the 3rd novel in June to see the events unfold and whether they will impact any of Elizabeths relations. Also waiting on the future of Anne & Charlotte!

To begin with this book is a continuation of A Consequence of Marriage, the first book in the Moralities of Marriage trilogy. All I can say about this book is what the hell? How can some people consciously choose to be evil? Mr Collins is evil, Lady Catherine is evil and so is George Wickham. Mr Collins enjoys being a woman beater obviously, Lady Catherine likes to make snap judgments about people that aren't true and Wickham likes to steal stuff and sell his wife off to his friends for money. I never could have realized that Collins and Wickham could be like that. I did enjoy that Richard and Darcy beat the crap out of Collins after he severely beat Lizzy for witnessing Richard marry Anne and disobeying his orders to not walk all about the countryside.

I do admit that I am looking forward to book three but I really didn't like Lizzy being beaten by her cousin and Wickham selling Georgiana to his friends for money sorta put me off. I just can't believe she went along with it. How Miss Darcy has fallen.

This Pride and Prejudice variation continues, with the Wickham's marriage going from bad to worse. The Bingleys return from their honeymoon to Netherfield, but Elizabeth is still staying with the Gardiners until she gets an invitation from Charlotte Lucas to visit. Can the plans of the Colonel and Darcy succeed.
An enjoyable re-read

I'm not sure I even want to read the next in this series. There is just soooooo much angst it's ridiculous. Other than Darcy and Elizabeth, every character in the story is a deplorable human being. Even Jane comes off poorly. It's okay to have conflict and misunderstandings, etc. but after so much it gets exhausting.

Another good story and a continuation!

Another good story! And there’s a continuation of it as well! Mr Darcy has agreed to marry his cousin Anne, but a switch of bridegrooms is in the works! Mr Collins is worse than just odious, he is a cruel man, but his cruelty is no allowed to go unanswered.

I thought the story very well written. It does not follow canon. Collins, Wickham, and Lady Catherine are evil. The story is darker than Pride and Prejudice and here is domestic violence, but still a well written story. I am looking forward to reading book 3. I listened to the narration and feel the narrator is not well suited. I did not care for Nina Price's narration.

I gave this four stars because it is a well-told story. The characters are somewhat familiar to an extent, but this is no humorous social farce. It is truly more of an alternate universe, a dark universe in which characters we are used to thinking of as silly or pompous are in fact vicious and violent. The settings are familiar; the circumstances are quite changed. Ms. West has truly created new situations to test the mettle and devotion of Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam. This is the second installment in this story and does not yet resolve things for our cast of characters.

I loved the first book, but I see that the story is really being drawn out. I don't serials, as long as each book is substantial, but this feels like a serial with each book being merely a novelette.
