Falling Undercover

Rate this book
Homicide detective Laura Moreno is done being just okay-ish.

Determined to prove herself, Laura volunteers for a high-stakes undercover assignment inside the writers’ room of a hit TV show. Her cover? A rookie screenwriter on the second season of a hit romance show. Her real mission? Unmask Vivienne Sinclair, the elusive author behind the bestselling novels the show is based on—after a fictional murder mirrors a real one a little too closely for the LAPD’s comfort.

Blending in was never going to be easy. Hollywood writers’ rooms aren’t exactly in the police handbook. Keeping her detective instincts in check proves harder than expected. But the real complication comes in the form of Vigo Rivas—a tall, dark-blond Spanish screenwriter, single dog-dad, and walking distraction with devastating charm and far too much ease for flirtation.

As the investigation deepens and the attraction grows impossible to ignore, Laura finds herself torn between the case that could define her career and the man she never planned to fall for—especially while hiding her real identity.

With a killer to catch, a pen name to unmask, and her heart on the line, Laura will have to decide how far she’s willing to go for the truth—and whether love can survive the ultimate undercover assignment.

A sexy, witty mystery romance packed with banter, Hollywood intrigue, and just enough danger to keep the pages turning, Falling Undercover is a standalone novel in the Confidential Hearts universe.

Perfect for readers who love:
- Whodunnit romance
- Secret identity
- Forced proximity
- Dog-assisted meet-cute
- Single dog-dad
- Flirty banter
- He falls first

ARC REVIEW

Can love survive an undercover assignment?

This cozy mystery romance was a real hoot. It was fast-paced and well-written, with a mystery that was pretty cool, even if it got a little cheesy and predictable in places. But honestly, I wasn't mad at it.

Laura is a totally awesome character. She's all aware of her flaws, but she's a strong and resilient woman who wants to do a good job, even when she's torn because she's fallen head over heels. What's a girl to do? Will she finish her assignment or will she go for the guy with the adorable dog? You will have to read the book to find out.

Thanks to Book Sirens for sending me an advanced copy to read and review!

ARC Review

I really liked Laura and Vigo's story ❤️ It was cute, funny, cozy and mysterious 🤩 The Mcs were unique and loveable. The story was also really entertaining and intriguing 😇 Even though it took me a little bit of time to get into the story and get used to the writing, it was still an easy and fast read. And I also LOVED the fact that Laura's character sometimes talked directly to the readers 😍 I really liked the book and I totally recommend it, especially if you love cozy mystery rom-com 🎉

When a murder scene from the infamous TV series based on a book, Dark Romance, resembles a real-life, dead-end murder case very closely, Laura Moreno goes undercover to get to the bottom of things. With wavering confidence in her career path, very little experience in creative writing, and a very tight deadline, she enters the writers’ room of Dark Romance Season 2 to uncover the identity of the author hidden in the shadows, Vivienne Sinclair. Of all the things and people, a dark-blonde Vigo Rivas with his overly cute and friendly dog is the last person she expects to distract her from the case. Can Laura get the promotion she’s been eyeing, as well as the boy who’s too good to be true?

Firstly, I’d like to thank Patricia Puentes and Grey’s Promotions for the opportunity to review this ARC. It has been quite the experience.

As someone who equally enjoys a good mystery and romance, when I learned that this was a romance whodunit, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the book. Stating the positives first, “Falling Undercover” truly worked for me in the last 3 to 4 chapters, where the mystery part was explored with full force. I also loved the prologue of the book, which opens with the insinuation that Laura is the one writing this story. I would’ve considered it to be genius penmanship had the author also included an epilogue with Laura signing off.

While diving into the book, I fully expected it to be a thrilling whodunit with a side of romance or a plot with an equal balance of both mystery and romance. However, it turned out to be 95% romance and 5% mystery. I love a good romance, don’t get me wrong, but everything other than Laura’s obsession with Vigo fell flat. A combination of overselling Vigo Rivas, Laura acting like a lovesick teenager for him, her being reckless and indiscreet about her work, and her coming off as a very amateur detective when she’s supposed to be great at the job is what disappointed me the most. That’s what made the mystery part feel borderline unrealistic and the romance side very plot-convenient.

Aside from that, there were some writing quirks that didn’t sit well with me; for example, constantly addressing Vigo as “Vigo freaking Rivas” or any other character (Kyle or the journalist) really annoyed me because of how teenage-y it sounds. Laura is supposed to be thirty-four! The sophistication and maturity were missing, unfortunately.

Another thing that disappointed me was the lack of translation for the Spanish dialogues. Though minimal, I had to constantly translate those dialogues to understand the flow of conversation between Laura and Vigo. It affected my reading flow significantly.

I believe this book is meant for teenagers and young adults, but there are certain scenes I wouldn’t recommend for those under 18.

This was my first time reading this author, and the premise immediately caught my attention. The idea of a detective going undercover as a junior scriptwriter after a television show featured a death strikingly similar to a real-life unsolved murder was intriguing and sounded like the perfect setup for a cosy mystery with a twist. Detective Laura Moreno sees the assignment as her chance to finally step out from the shadow of her cop father and brother and prove herself. But before she can solve the case, she has to uncover the tightly guarded identity of bestselling author Vivienne Sinclair, whose novels inspired the series. Unfortunately for Laura, Vivienne’s identity is protected like a state secret, with nobody willing to reveal it. Throw in a handsome Spanish scriptwriter, complete with a cute dog, and it’s no surprise that her focus occasionally starts to drift and she quickly finds herself juggling more than just the investigation.

On paper, this book had everything I should have loved: a compelling mystery, secret identities, behind-the-scenes television drama, romance, and of course a lovable dog determined to make Laura his new ‘mommy.’ Unfortunately, while all the ingredients were there, I felt I never fully connected with the characters or got to know them beyond on a surface level. There is a inside joke about several of the secondary characters, three brunette women who seemed to merge together in everyone’s minds with nothing memorable about them, and that was how I felt about much of the cast, including the main couple. Neither Laura nor Vigo stood out, with the dog having the strongest personality of them all, which made it difficult to become fully engaged in their emerging romance. Vigo especially felt underused as a character. For someone introduced as a scriptwriter, he seemed to spend far more time playing with his dog than actually working.

That said, I did enjoy the mystery itself. The way the fictional TV show murder mirrored the real-life unsolved case was intriguing, and I liked the gradual uncovering of how the two stories were linked as the plot progressed. Falling Undercover definitely had an interesting concept and some enjoyable moments, but overall, the characters simply didn’t work for me, but I can still see the appeal for other readers.

Falling Undercover was such a fun and fast paced mystery romance read for me because it balanced suspense, chemistry, banter, and emotional tension really well throughout the story.

Laura volunteers for an undercover assignment inside the writers’ room of a TV show because she wants to prove she’s more than just “fine” or “competent” as a detective. But trying to balance her real identity as Detective Laura while pretending to be Writer Laura quickly becomes more complicated than she expected.

Especially once Vigo enters the picture 👀

Vigo was honestly the LAST thing Laura needed while trying to stay focused on the investigation, but the chemistry between them was immediate and impossible to ignore. Their flirting and growing attraction made the story feel even more entertaining because underneath the mystery and undercover storyline, there was still a lot of emotional tension building between them.

One thing I really enjoyed was watching the lines slowly blur between Laura’s assignment and her actual feelings. The deeper she got into the case and into her connection with Vigo, the messier everything became emotionally.

And honestly… once the reveal finally happened???
Yeah, that hurt 😭

Because of course Vigo felt betrayed, and seeing Laura struggle with the fallout of everything made the emotional side of the story hit harder.

This book honestly felt like such a bingeable read because there was always something happening between the mystery, undercover identity, romance, and emotional tension.

Falling Undercover by Patrica Puentes is a murder mystery romance. Laura Moreno is a homicide detective who feels stuck in her career and reputation. Vigo Rivas is a charming Spanish screenwriter with a dog.

When a high profile murder case is opened, Laura volunteers for an undercover assignment inside the writers’ room of a hit TV show. She wants to prove she’s more than “fine,” more than “competent,” more than “okay ish.” But the job is harder than she expected, she’s juggling two identities: Detective Laura and Writer Laura and the lines blur fast. Vigo Rivas is the last thing Laura needs, a distraction. But the chemistry is between them instant, impossible to ignore but inconvenient.

Laura and Vigo grow closer, the attraction between them grows, lines blur and rules break. Laura is lying to him every day, he thinks she’s a writer, he thinks she’s honest, he thinks she’s falling for him which she is. But as Laura gets closer to the truth, her cover begins to crack and her feelings for Vigo complicate everything. The tension builds, the danger builds and her career making case becomes a life threatening one.

Laura and Vigo’s journey is not an easy one and when Laura’s true identity comes to light Vigo feels betrayed and Laura feels shattered. In the end love survives the undercover operation in a murder mystery which although predictable at times is twisty without overshadowing the romance and a good blend of suspense and romance. I do think the Spanish dialogue ruined it somewhat for me, as there were no translations, so I had to either stop and find translations or skip it and hope I hadn’t missed salient points in doing so.

This was such a fun cozy mystery romance and honestly just a really entertaining read overall. The story moves quickly, the writing is easy to fall into, and it balances mystery, romance, and humor really well. Laura, our FMC, is an undercover detective posing as a TV script writer while investigating a suspicious death, but things get messy once feelings start getting involved… especially when a charming fellow writer and his adorable dog enter the picture.

I really liked Laura. She’s flawed, self-aware, and trying her best to stay focused on her job even while dealing with unexpected emotions. The undercover storyline added a nice amount of tension, and the chemistry between the main characters was cute and fun to follow. The banter was enjoyable, and I always love a good “he falls first” dynamic.
The mystery itself was interesting, even if it leaned a little predictable and cheesy in some moments. Personally, I didn’t mind because the cozy vibe of the book made it such an easy and enjoyable read anyway. The BookTok references sprinkled throughout were also a fun addition.

The only thing that didn’t fully work for me was the Spanish dialogue. I liked that it was included, but I do wish translations had been provided somewhere in the book because I found myself having to pause and look things up pretty often.
Overall, this was a cute, cozy Hollywood mystery with a light romance subplot that made for a really enjoyable reading experience.

Falling Undercover serves up a witty, sexy mystery romance that hooks with its fresh Hollywood spin—homicide detective Laura Moreno goes undercover as a rookie screenwriter in a hit romance show's writers' room to unmask elusive author Vivienne Sinclair after a fictional murder eerily mirrors a real LAPD case. Patricia Puentes nails the chaotic energy of blending detective instincts with Hollywood banter, making it an engaging, page-turning escape full of flirtatious tension.
Laura's determination to prove herself shines as she navigates the high-stakes assignment, but the real spark ignites with Vigo Rivas—the tall, dark-blond Spanish screenwriter, single dog-dad, and devastatingly charming distraction whose easy flirtation turns "just okay-ish" into heart-racing complication. Their chemistry crackles amid writers' room chaos, deepening as Laura grapples with her hidden identity, career-defining case, and unplanned feelings. The intrigue builds nicely with just enough danger, snappy dialogue, and that irresistible push-pull of love under pressure.
It's a genuinely enjoyable read with solid emotional warmth and standout moments of suspenseful attraction—Puentes balances the mystery and romance deftly. A tighter pace in the mid-section and deeper layers for side characters could elevate it further, but it delivers reliably on sexy, banter-filled undercover vibes. Perfect for fans of Hollywood-set romantic suspense craving wit with heart.

I had really high hopes for this book, it really seemed my speed, murder mystery and Hollywood glitz and glamour are tropes I love! This one just fell short of the mark. Laura and Vigo, I love it. In my head, Vigo looks / acts like Rogelio from Jane the Virgin, which makes me laugh. While Laura is like Xiomara but without all the makeup and femininity. I think they have such a cute dynamic. To me though it just was like, how could she bring a guy home knowing she is undercover and be surprised when he figures out her identity. The actual culprit, I feel was way out of left field, like we could see this person being a possibility, but didn't know enough about them to even consider them as the culprit but "ah ha!" it was them now here's a dump on their backstory and why it was them. It lacked the build up? But I do know when to commend a good build up when I see one, the reveal to Vivienne Sinclair was good! I had my hunch and I was right, but it was a nice little twist. I am debating on picking up the next book, "Love, Lines, and Alibis" there wasn't too much build up on these characters so it's still a maybe for me. What I would love to see a spin off of, is Pato and Dani. Her best friend, married her brother? Okay what's the story behind this? This sounds messy but it looks like it went well if they are still best friends.

Falling Undercover is a cute whodunnit with a sweet romance.

When Laura Moreno takes an undercover assignment for her job at the LAPD, she never expects to meet Vigo Rivas and fall for him, but she does. Her job is in the writer’s room for the hot TV show Dark Romance, and Vigo is one of the other writers. There’s been one murder and one attempted murder, and Laura’s assignment is to not only to find the killer but to find out the true identity of Vivienne Sinclair, secretive author of the Dark Romance series.

Tropes:

•He Falls First
•Single Dog-Dad
•Dog-Assisted Meet Cute
•Flirty Banter
•Whodunnit Romance
•Forced Proximity
•Secret Identity
•Independent Heroine
•First Person, Single POV

This is such a cute book. The story is sweet without being too much. The whodunnit part of the story is good without being over the top. I really love the characters who inhabit this story, especially Laura who is strong and intelligent. And I have to mention Bali, Vigo’s Bernese Mountain Dog, a cute puppy who picks Laura out to become Vigo’s girlfriend.

I recommend this fun book - read it and let me know what you think - I’d love to discuss!

Tropes:

Who dunnit

Secret identity/undercover cop

Forced proximity

He falls first

Pup assisted meet cute

Laura is a detective with the LAPD. She has been tasked to go undercover as a screenwriter to help solve a murder.

Vigo is a screenwriter on the same show the FMC is assigned to go undercover at. He is also the dog dad to the pooch who was the mastermind of their meet cute.

The romance wasn’t the main focus of the story which is a good thing because it was pretty cliche. Live is blind seems to be the theme for the FMC. Laura seems to be way too trusting for someone who’s supposed to be an undercover cop and makes some “interesting” choices when it came to Vigo.

This was a quick and enjoyable read however, the writing is almost too verbose and repetitive and it made some parts difficult to read.

I really enjoyed reading this book!!! I started reading it on a transatlantic flight, and it might have been the first time that I wanted a flight to last longer.
The mystery portion of the story is really well done, I had no clue until the end.
In addition, I love the female lead characters in Patricia Puentes’ books, Laura included. They are strong and confident, but also well aware of their flaws. They are not perfect or trying to be perfect, but they are willing to be vulnerable and grow. And that’s what makes them strong and awesome.
Also, in this book I love how Laura’s undercover character is showing her parts of herself that she has not allowed herself to be or explore. We all need an undercover assignment like that!

Overall a great read with lots of humor, romance, mystery, and depth. I highly recommend it!

I had such a good time with this book. It blends mystery, romance, and humour in a way that kept me turning the pages. Laura, an LAPD detective, goes undercover as a TV scriptwriter to investigate a suspicious death. The Hollywood setting gave the story a fresh spin, and I loved the mix of behind-the-scenes drama with the tension of her assignment.

Laura was a great lead, smart, determined, and flawed in ways that made her feel real. I enjoyed watching her confidence grow as she navigated both the case and her undercover role. The chemistry between her and Vigo, the charming Spanish writer with his adorable dog, added a fun romantic subplot. Their banter was fun.

The mystery was engaging. The cozy vibe made it enjoyable. The final twist caught me off guard, which is always a win in a mystery.

Addition of the Spanish dialogue was a great touch and also booktok references.

Falling Undercover is the second book in the Confidential Hearts series but it can be read as a stand alone. This is the first book I've read by Patricia Puentes. The prologue mentions that the story comes from Laura's investigation notes, so the writing is fast-paced and heavy on actions rather than descriptions. The premise is fun even though it's not very plausible. I do wish I knew Spanish though as there was a significant amount of Spanish dialogue in the book. Sometimes the surrounding text gave clues about what it meant (for example, saying I appreciated the compliment), but not always, and I do feel that I would have gotten more out of the dialogue if I knew more Spanish. I did still enjoy the story.

I received a copy of this book at my request and the opinions here are my own.

Falling Undercover was the first book by Patricia Puentes that I've read. I really liked the mystery part of the book, but had some trouble with a couple of other things. The first thing to note is that quit a bit of the book was written in Spanish. The main male character, Vigo Rivas, is Spanish so that makes sense but I don't know Spanish so I did feel like I missed out on some of the parts to the story. The other problem I had was that this is written in a style that's a little young for me to enjoy. I'm over 50, so I didn't understand some of the very current references and character descriptions. I like to learn new terms, but I just had to look up too many of them to fully enjoy the book. But overall I thought the story was good, just not the best book for me.

A standalone, cozy mystery romance read. Well written and delightfully fun. Our main character Detective Laura Moreno is a wonderful character. Going undercover as a screenwriter to investigate a suspicious murder she meets the charming Vigo Rivas and his dog. She attempts to focus on her job when all the feels come into play. While I enjoyed to sweet romance and mystery aspect as well as our characters, the Spanish dialogue was distracting since there were no translations included which meant for me, I was google translating as I read. Other than that, I found this to be a delightful, captivating and well balanced read!

Detective Laura Moreno is on a mission to prove herself and goes undercover in an other crazy scenario. She is undercover in a Hollywood Writer’s Room 🫠. And to make stakes even higher, it’s for a show that had incredibly high ratings, steam, drama and well, a murder its first season on air. This one was so fun! It had all the things- banter, little meet-cute moments, suspense, intrigue, a little romance, the two faced nature of Hollywood, the cut throat (pun intended) ways of show business… I ate this up!

Thank you Grey’s Promotions and Patricia Puentes for sharing this arc with me! 🕵🏼‍♀️🫆💙

Thank you to the author for providing me with eARC in exchange for review. My opinions are based solely on my reading experience.

It was such a pleasure to read about Laura after meeting her as one of the officers in the previous book. Laura is LAPD detective, sent for an undercover assignment, posing as a screenwriter to find a murderer and uncover the hidden identity of an author. She meets Vigo, another writer, a single dog dad, and an absolute charming Spaniard, and they both exchange flirty banter right away.

I really enjoyed Laura’s character and her arc throughout the book. She started off doubting her creativity but ended up feeling more confident than ever in her abilities. She was smart, funny, determined, and had zero boundaries (at least she was unapologetic about that one). The mystery kept me intrigued throughout and I was not expecting the final twist.

The romance plot was slightly cliched and cheesy, but thankfully it was not the main focus. I found Laura making questionable choices when it came to Vigo, and she was far more trusting than I’d expect an undercover detective to be. But maybe love is really blind lol.

The author included a lot of booktok references throughout the book and they were a nice addition to the plot. Overall, a good cozy Hollywood mystery with romance subplot. Can’t wait for more of Sol and Luke and Olga’s storylines.

This was a fun cozy mystery/rom-com by a new-to-me author. I thought it was well written, with an engaging plot and relatable characters. There was an even amount of mystery and romance, and while there were a few moments that felt predictable, it didn’t hurt the book at all. I just loved the author’s voice—she brought Laura, Vigo and the story to life.

Since this is the second in a series I’m now off to pick up the first. Thanks to Grey’s Promotions for helping me to discover a great author and a fun new series.
