Or will she become her own worst nightmare?
Kipton's one year away from graduation. He's never thought beyond a one night stand until meeting his sister’s new roommate. 4 emotional stars *arc provided in exchange for an honest review*
"Closing my eyes, I say a silent prayer that my luck will change- that someone will save me from the hell my life has become."
Whew. What an emotional ride!
The story centers around Sophie- an emotionally abused girl whose past is nothing short of a nightmare. Her life is irrevocably changed the minute she meets her roommates' brother, Kipton.
Oh, Kipton. I truly found myself falling in love with him alongside Sophie! He was so amazing with her and stuck by her through thick and thin. He was an amazing character and it was nice to get a break from the crazy alpha males that haunt the pages of many romance novels nowadays! I loved the love between them and I rooted for their relationship from the first page they are introduced to one another!
So why 4 and not 5 stars? There were a few scenes in the book that I felt did not need to be there...llike when Kipton It was very out of character for him, and it just didn't fit. Also I felt that there was too much emphasis on trying to make us feel sorry for Sophie. Having a shitty past would have been enough, but then she also...
If you enjoy an emotional romance novel- I would definitely recommend this book! This is my first read from Gia Riley, and it certainly won't be the last! ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I get a lot of requests for reviews either through my blog or from publishers. And it's impossible to say yes to everyone. So when Gia emailed my blog asking if we wanted to review her book, I read the synopsis and knew I had to read it.
As soon as I read the prologue I knew this book would tear me to shreds. And it did. It was a very emotional read. There are some touchy subjects for sure in Lighter. But Gia pulled it off fantastically.
Sophie was denied her chance to go to the college of her dreams for freshman year. But somehow come her junior year, she was offered a place on the gymnastics team at her dream college. This is where we meet Cara, her new roommate and her sexy as sin brother Kipton or Kippy as Cara likes to cal him.
Sophie is instantly attracted to him and him to her. He invites them both to a party and Sophie decides to go with Cara. She's allowed 1 night of partying right? Well things do not go well. But this gives Kipton and Sophie the chance to see each other differently.
Kipton is trying to wear Sophie down and get her to open up to him. She pushes herself so hard, and it takes a toll on her body. Everyone around her is worried but don't know what to do.
While reading Lighter I cried several times for this girl who is broken and needing help but can't get out of her own head to think clearly and seek the help she needs. I adore Kipton and his never wavering attention to her. If he wasn't there I honestly think Sophie wouldn't have gotten the help she needed when she did.
Lighter is a must read. The writing was fantastic and I connected with the characters. I felt what they felt, and that's when you know the author did their job. This was my first book by Gia Riley but it won't be my last.
Kipton is mine! Everyone needs to read this book! Review to come!
This book ... I just don't have words that even begin to describe how this book absolutely touched me. I've loved Gia Riley's work since she came out with her first book, but Lighter is just in a world of its own. I loved her characters. Sophie is just living in a world of pain and you can't help but feel for her every step of the way. And, Kipton ... Kipton is just the perfect book boyfriend. He will steal your heart, just as he has stolen mine. There are many curve balls in this book and just when you think you know what's coming, Gia Riley send something else in your direction. I won't say anymore because I hate spoiling anything and you just NEED to read this one for yourself! Five beautifully breathtaking stars for you, Gia Riley! I can't wait for more!
Completely fell for the main characters in this book—Sophie, the sweet, troubled soul, and Kipton, the man who loved her. I related way too much to Sophie, maybe that's why I fell so hard for Kipton. Ladies, he is SOOOO swoonworthy.
This book contains lots of angst, a good deal of humor to balance out the angst, and then the heat ... there's lots of that between Sophie and Kipton.
I will start by saying I have been looking forward to reading this book for months and was so excited when I was asked by the author to read for an honest review. Wow what an amazing book. I actually had to wait an entire day to write this review to let everything soak in. It was filled with so much emotion and love that I myself feel like I could burst. First we meet Sophie who has basically dealt with it all, has been living a life filled with hurt, depressions, and not feeling she deserved to truly be loved. Her one true love, gymnastics, has given her an out at a new university where she is hoping she can for once just be and act normal. Her first day she meets her amazing roommate Cara and Cara's smoking hot brother Kipton, cue the swoon music now! And from there her life is forever changed. Kipton is a big man on campus, being a wrestler ad of of course drop dead gorgeous. But he feels something huge for Sophie and wants to be there for her and above everything wants her to be his!! It he figures out really early on that Sophie has some issues and needs to gain her trust and prove to her that they belong together. Can Kipton bust down the walls that Sophie has put up or is he just fighting a losing battle? I was totally sucked into this book right from the start! This story tugged at my heartstrings dealing with a tough matter, that happens to be a personal thing for me, but Gia did an amazing job with bringing light and compassion to a very sensitive topic. I loved the characters Sophie I could absolutely relate to in some ways and Kipton, my word, everyone should have a Kipton in their life. This is a story about love and being able to come out of the dark and actually see the light and there really is true love and happiness that everyone deserves. I would absolutely recommend this book to everyone. Gia blew me away with this story and I am dying for more!
I have been a tremendous fan of Gia Riley's work since I got my hands on her first release ages ago. This book is different from her earlier work but no less brilliant. The subject matter is heavier, even though the characters are younger. Oh the roller coaster this tale took me on! Be prepared to have your heart ripped from your chest and then put back together again, eventually.
Lighter follows the story of Sophie. She is a collegiate athlete and gymnastics is her game. For as long as she can remember it has been her only escape from the problems that plague her at home. Her ability to bounce back repeatedly really endeared her to me; I loved her warrior spirit. She had endured more than anyone her age should ever have to at the hands of those who were supposed to care for her the most. Thankfully, her nutty roommate, Cara, was there to help her settle into things at college. Cara is the perfect balance of fun and silly to Sophie's calm and in control. She provided a great touch of humor which this book absolutely needed. When Sophie meets Kipton, Cara's brother, her world is thrown off its axis. There is an instant attraction between them that they can't explain.
Kipton is what a dream guy is made of; smart, sexy, sweet and an athlete to boot. When he lays eyes on Sophie for the first time he is stunned stupid. She brings out all of his protective and nurturing instincts. I loved seeing a softer more vulnerable side to the persona he portrayed to his friends and team mates. He knows what he wants but Sophie is the one who keeps pushing him away. And my goodness when she finally and I mean FINALLY lays it all out there, I felt like I was punched in the gut and hit upside the head at the same time. His patience and understanding with Sophie as she battled through everything just proved how much he loved her.
Just when I think I've got it figured out and Kipton and Sophie would finally have some happiness...BAM! Another twist in the road. The way they kept hurting each other, whether intentionally or not really pulled at my heart strings. There was so much unexpected goodness wrapped up in this book but it was surrounded with a current of sadness. I can't even count the number of times there were tears streaming down my face. My heart broke for Sophie and Kipton, but mostly Sophie. Luckily she had people who were willing to fight for her until she could fight for herself.
Gia Riley's work just keeps getting better and better. While there is a lot of heavy and dark material covered in this book there is also a lightness and gentleness. The intense situations were handled with the delicacy they so desperately needed. I will say that I did want a little more of Sophie's struggle (as if she didn't struggle enough) to pull herself from the bottom of the pit. Lighter was heartbreakingly beautiful. It touched me in a ways I didn't expect and is a tale that will stick with me for quite some time.
Oh wow...I love this book, Gia Riley did it again and left me wanting for more!!! Last year I came across with the first book of Gia and I fell head over heels with her work and talent. And since then she became one of my few one-click-no thinking-authors.
So I was really excited for Lighter and more so when I read it.
We have Sophie a beautiful but trouble girl whose upbringing has been really tough and her only let out is gymnastics. So she goes to College to start fresh and she meet her roommate Cara, a gorgeous sparkly girl with the right amount of crazy to for her and Sophie. Cara become a great friend for Sophie.
And then we have Kipton, Cara's brother, the hot wrestler, swoon worthy guy. Smitten by Sophie he's determined to show her that she is worthy of love and that he'll always be ther for her. This book will make you bawl but it also make you laugh, fall in love and swoon all over it and their characters.
For me,Lighter is Gia's best work yet. I can't wait for more of your work Gia.
This was my first Gia Riley book but it will definitely not be my last. This book dealt with a series issue with complete sensitivity. It was more than a love story & we do get a great one. It was one girls journey to find herself & love herself before she got her soulmate. Sophie & Kipton were an amazing couple, they both had issues to work out & they both made mistakes, but that was all part of their journey to each other. There were some twists in this story & it keeps you engaged from page 1. I loved how Sophie got an instant family with Kipton's family. Great secondary characters. Outstanding book, don't hesitate to read.
The growth that Gia has shown from her first book is noticeable. I love her books and fell in love with her first one.
But, Lighter is something different and real. From the beginning you are in the book. The story flows perfectly. The characters captivate the reader and you will not soon forget Kipton!
The instant connection between him and Sophie is strong. No denying these two want each other. But, life can't always be so easy. Everyone has a skeleton or two. coming clean can chase people away.
Kipton will be tested and Sophie will mature but will these two survive what life will toss their way?
4.5 stars “Hope. One simple word with so many possibilities. I like the sound of it.”
Lighter by Gia Riley was such a beautiful read. At first glance, Lighter may have seemed to be a light-hearted read, and in many aspects it was truly that. But, this book struck a certain note of remembrance for me that had me grabbing my box of tissues and cuddling up for a fantastic and emotional ride that satisfied all of the my book cravings.
“I melt like ice cream on the fourth of July. Take my man card, universe, it’s all yours.”
You come across characters in books sometimes to whom you have an instant connection. I really liked Sophie. But, I instantly connected with Kipton. The fact that he was the roommate's brother, his sexy description ogled to us by Sophie, and the way he talked made me gravitate to him. Reading his point of view in the story that told of his own desires and feelings for Sophie made me feel giddy. He was such a smooth talker and his spontaneity was awesome.
“You’ll never be worthless, Sophie. I may be too far gone to turn it around, but you’re bound to be a star.”
As the story progressed though, I felt a stronger connection with Sophie that went outside of the hot guy. My heart ached for her as, time after time, we were told of tragedies that she went through or had to overcome. But, the one secret that she held from everyone was what really consumed me. I could only imagine that this was very difficult for Gia Riley to research and write about. It needed to be presented in a way that would show Sophie’s vulnerability, but also her strength in fighting and overcoming. It also had to be written with care and sympathy, as it is a real-life issue that many teenage and young adult females face. The author accomplished all of this, and did in such a manner that enhanced the story plot. I look forward to the next book in this series and to more of Sophie and Kipton’s story.
The words to describe this story is so hard simply because it's a phenomenal story. I was swept away by the depth of Sophie this poor girl was dealt a horrible hand in life. She lives with her dad and mom but her Dad is hateful to her treating her as if she's nothing. Her mom was a gymnyst so Sophie wanted to have her mother proud of her and get any attention she could. But as Sophie got older the hatred from her father only increased. She met someone who she thought understood her somebody that could possibly love her. But Blaine was just deceiving her the whole time. So she decided then in order to make her mother proud and prove to everyone that she was worth something she gets a scholarship to the school she's been dying to go to. Coach Evans is an amazing coach and she realizes he can get her to be her best. But she meets her roommate who is Cara and a friendship blossoms. But what she didn't expect is Kipton to be added in her world and the connection between them is amazing. That's all I'm saying about the actual story cause I hate spoilers. But this book was beautifully written it has so many messages in the story. I am thrilled about this series continuing. I for one understand how you feel when you're in a situation like this granted mine wasn't exactly the same but my mom married abusive men. It's really a thing that messes with the mind you question yourself many times trying to figure out" if you are good enough". Since your constantly told no your not" go stay there so he doesn't get mad". Well you get the gist of what I'm saying but also ask yourself this do you ever look in the mirror and except what you see or do you picture yourself in a complete different way from what other people tell you. Thank you Gia Riley for hitting topics in this story that needs to be faced these are real issues and I enjoyed it so much.
Lighter was a unique read with a mixture of light and dark... It wasn't a sexual/murder/mind f dark, but a deep set emotional dark. Sophie has been through a lot. Her life has been a struggle and gymnastics has always been her escape. When she moves for college to follow her dreams, life seems to look up, but the darkness quickly consumes her and she falls back into her old ways. Sickness overtakes her body and mind... It takes the one and only hotty, Kipton to pull her into the light and show her what it is to be loved.
Lighter was fast paced with lots of angst. It had sweet, romantic parts, but it's main focus was on a push and pull relationship. Sophie wants to trust, but her past holds her back. She has a wall built up and slowly, but surely it comes caving in. Secrets are revealed and lies threaten to destroy. It takes time, thought, and lots of tears to put everything back together, but the Author does give us an HEA.
What I enjoyed about this book is that it was unique. The story is a typical college age romance, but with so many one of a kind aspects. You will never guess what's to come and Sophie's big issue will make you take a step back to think.
The reason why I gave it a 4 and not a 5 is because the storyline wasn't really my style. It was a book that pulled you in and kept you interested, but Sophie is enough to drive someone slightly nuts. I know that her issues were very real and very scary, but at times I just couldn't wrap my brain around it all.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. The Author's writing was superb and that is what kept me reading...
She knows how to take something ugly, and turn it into something truly inspiring.
Lighter is a touching and heartbreaking story of Sophie, a tortured soul who is struggling to find her way in the world. She's been raised by her mom and sorry excuse for a dad. Her boyfriend was abusive and her self-confidence is little to none. The only thing that keeps her together is her gymnastics.
So as she escapes her life and goes to college her junior year, her life drastically changes. Some for the better, and some for the worse. She meets her new roommate Cara who I just loved. She's cute, sweet, and is really the type of friend Sophie needs. But, it's her brother Kipton who brings Sophie back to life. Even though she's determined to excel in gymnastics, her path is changed by secrets and her attraction to Kipton.
As her relationship with Kip moves forward, it seems like there are obstacles along the way that push her backward. As she struggles to survive, her relationship with Kip only grows stronger and that's one thing I just LOVED about this book. He stands by her side and is the one constant she needs in her life. I loved how Kip, Cara, and even his family played such important roles in her healing. Kip is definitely swoonworthy, caring, and such a hottie!
I fell in love with Gia's writing from the start and this book only impressed me more. The characters in this book are brought together into such amazing relationships and as my heart broke for what she endured, it seemed their love stayed strong.
This is my first Gia Riley novel, but it definitely won’t be my last. What a moving story! Riley tackles some really heavy subjects in Sophie and Kipton’s story. It’s heartbreaking yet full of hope and love.
Sophie transfers to her dream college on a gymnastics scholarship. Feeling the pressures of her sport and haunted by abuses in her past, she strives for perfection in everything she does. She didn’t count on falling for her roommate’s older brother, Kipton…or that he would fall for her too. Sidelined by a lack in judgment, she starts to feel her control slip, and the demons she struggles with resurface. It’s a fight she’s always faced alone. It’s a different battle now with Kipton in her life.
Lighter is a beautiful, heart-rending tale of the healing power of love. Sophie’s struggles with the pressures to be perfect are serious, and the emotional and physical turmoil she experiences are a very real thing. I loved these characters and their chemistry! I think many readers will relate with Sophie on some level, and Kipton is a nearly perfect. The secondary characters are fantastic, the story has some major twists in the road, and overall it’s one heck of an emotional ride! I laughed and cried, and I applaud Riley for taking on such a delicate subject. I highly recommend and am looking forward to more Sophie and Kipton.
Wow, just finished this great story. I heard so many great things about this book while I was reading the first two books she had written. I am so damn glad I got this and read it.
This story has so many layers that make it great. Sophie is a girl that has priority in her gymnastics and moves to a new college on a scholarship and to work under a coach she has always dreamed to work under. She joins the team and thinks all her dreams have been answered. She has a strict schedule and doesn't want to indulge in her college life. Her roommate Cara is just the breath of fresh air she needs in her life. She makes her laugh and pulls her out of her tight shell. Kipton is a charming hot wrestler that also happens to be Cara's older brother. You can't help but absolutely adore him. Will he light the fire in Sophie she needs but denies? Her past is not so smooth and makes her nervous to be accepted.
Many things are peeled back for Sophie during her time spent with Cara and Kipton.
Ugh I don't want to give anything away and it makes writing this review that much more difficult. You will enjoy this love story. It will make you laugh, tear up, love and swoon. You may want to kick some butt too lol. Highly recommend this read and cannot wait to see what Gia has up her sleeve next!!
I don't even know where to begin!! My heart and my stomach are one jumbled mess. I have tears streaming down my face and I finished the book a good 5-10 minutes ago.
To say that I connected or related to Sophie would be an understatement. Gia has written an amazingly beautiful, flawed character that you just want to reach through the book, grab her, and hug her. I wanted to tell her it's all going to be ok. When an author can write characters that grab you and wring the tears and emotions out of you...wow. Just wow.
Kipton. Oh my word, Kipton!! What a sweet man!! Every girl needs a Kippy. His patience and level of caring toward Sophie (and his sister!!)...there aren't any limits to how far he'll go for them.
This was my first book by Gia...and now I feel the need to binge read everything she has out there. Grocery list? I'll take it. There are only a handful of authors I feel this strongly about..and Gia just landed among them. Lighter IS my favorite book of the year. It will take A LOT to top it. The beautiful and absolutely gut-wrenching story will stay with me forever. Thank you, Gia. You have no idea how impactful this story is going to be, for a ton of women and young women alike. <3
Lighter. The title is definitely perfect for this book because once you read it, you really do feel lighter. This story is based on the successes and challenges of both Sophie and Kipton as individuals and a couple. Kipton is the type to know he can have anything he wants. That no relationship is serious for him. Until Sophie. Sophie uses gymnastics as a healing mechanism to deal with her fathers verbal abuse, her mothers blind eye and her ex-boyfriends physical abuse. And Kipton is the one who makes all her insecurities vanish and makes her feel the one thing she has always wanted. To be loved. Lighter is about losing all your fears in order to live the life you were meant to. With the help of those who have your best interest at heart. I envy the way Kipton put Sophie first. How he knew exactly what to say to make her see how wanted she is, how loving she can be. This was a beautiful story where we see lifelong friendships being formed, moving on from a painful past, finally having a proper family and finding the one person who will love you like no other.
1st off Sophia is a great heroine. Strong yet broken. If I had this poor girls life I may have quit long ago.
Sophia has a crappy mom who seems to live her own dream thru Sophia's gymnastics, an alcoholic, verbally abusive dad and to top it off her form of dealing with it is an eating disorder. Let's not forget the abusive ex-boyfriend.
Now off to her dream college, to play for her dream coach she is free of their torment. Her room mate is wild and fun. But it is her brother, Kipton, who steals the show. He is sweet and caring and everything she wants but thinks she is not worthy of.
When pressure and secrets come out it becomes to much her budding relationship with Kip, her friendship and her life are at risk. Her world is shattered and all she can do is try to fight to survive.
This girl takes it from all angles and still fights to survive. I loved it.
Lighter is wonderful, emotional, and heartbreaking. Gia Riley writes with such knowledge and understanding.
Sophie's dreams have finally come true. She gets a college gymnastics scholarship. She can escape her home life. Or can she? Just because she's free, is she able to live in the moment? Or will the past 20 years ruin everything? When she meets her roommate, she has a new friend. When she sees her roommates brother, Kipton, she may have her boyfriend, too. That is, if she can make it through her first semester.
From start to finish, Sophie's story has triggers. While there are funny moments, this is a deep novel. What sets this apart from others is the incredible depth, counseling, and honesty. I feel and know Sophie's journey is true and real. There are young ladies experiencing her story right now. Maybe not exactly like Sophie, yet similar enough to break my heart.
Yes to Sophie! Yes to Lighter! Yes to Gia Riley! I have a new favorite author! :)
This is a beautiful story with beautiful characters. Sophie is just starting her junior year away at college. She's going through many things in her life. I don't want to give any spoilers. She's a strong, independent young woman. I loved her from the beginning.
Kipton is Sophie's roommate's brother. He is the sweetest guy!! The things he says...swoon!!
Cara is a great side character! I absolutely loved her fun outlook on life, but her loyal attitude made me love her even more!!
There are some controversial topics that are covered. I think they were written about wonderfully. Enough sensitivity for it to be taken seriously and enough realness for it not to seem forced.
Gia, you wrote a great book and I cannot wait to read more!!!!
Lighter was a fantastic book and a beautiful story. It had everything, a main character so broken your heart breaks for her on every page, enough angst to chew your fingernails to the bone, and a very swoon worthy man who desperately loves his girl but can't quite reach her.
Sophie and Kipton have such an intense connection that goes beyond the physical (although the physical is pretty damn awesome). She comes out of her shell and lets people into her life because of the love he wants to give her. My heart broke for both of them many times in this story.
This was my first book by Gia Riley and I really enjoyed it! I haven't read a college romance in awhile and I loved going back to it. I almost felt like I was back in college, hanging out in the dorms and going to parties...a trip down memory lane!
I loved Kipton & Sophie's story. I really felt for Sophie throughout the story. She had some lousy situations to deal with along the way. I've never read a book with one particular issue that Sophie dealt with (I don't want to give anything away) and it was interesting to read about it through someone's eyes as they're going through it.
Looking forward to catching up with Sophie and Kipton again in Weightless!!
*This book covers some issues that may be sensitive for some people to read.* With that being said, if you have had any experience with individuals who have suffered any type of abuse and/or addiction (of any kind), I HIGHLY recommend you read this book. It gives insight to what they have experienced and felt and helps you to understand why they have certain behavior patterns. You will absolutely fall in love all of the characters. Sophie, Kipton (seriously swoon-worthy), Cara, Drew, and even Caleb won me over. I just realized this was a series and am so excited to see what is next to come.
Oh my...Gia is awesome..wait is hard for me to find words for this book. Sophie has lived an awful life both with her father and ex boyfriend. She doesn't know how to deal with life. After transferring colleges for a gymnastics scholarship she meets Kipton. There is instantly a connection but Sophie doesn't think she can do a relationship. Kipton never gives up on his feelings for her. I laughed and cried thru the whole story. So heart wrenching but it does show that not every family is family by blood. A must read!!
This book had me from the very beginning. I fell in love with Sophie and Kipton, even Cara I loved. As I read I cried, laughed, got angry, everything. This is the first book I've read of Gia's but it will definitely NOT be the last. Gia is going to be an author I follow and border on Facebook Salk (; words can not explain how excited I was for this book and it was so worth the wait! Amazing job Gia!!
I just finished this amazing book and I have to say that I fell in love with all of the characters, its an amazing story about life, love, trouble and not feeling good enough to be loved. The book will take you into a ride of emotions.. one minute you will be laughing, the other your heart will be breaking and the next you will be flying away with love just as the characters are between these pages, I recommend this book without a doubt! pick up a copy
This is a very good book. Sophie transferred to a different college. She meets her new roommate & instantly falls for her roommates brother. Little did they realize Sophie was going through some serious issues. It was causing all kinds of problems. While her & Kipton try a relationship he helps her more than she could have ever imagined. Finding out the truth behind some of her issues, Sophie doesn't respond too well. Can Kipton be enough to save her.
I have been a fan of Gia's since her first book and let me tell you, I was not disappointed with this book. Gia writes her characters with so much heart and she makes the characters come to life. I love Kippy so much with all of my heart. Gia kept the readers guessing with Sophie. I love her back story. I love everything about this book and you will too!
Kipton is the perfect boy who helps show Sophie she "isn't broken, just bent & she can learn to love again" (~ P!nk) This is the first book I have read by Gia and I will be reading more, she created great characters who I want more of! {A big Thank You to the lovely Mandi Beck who gifted me this book ♡}
