So, this is my least favorite book series in the world. As usual, the universe itself is problematic. It's a world with a few familiar supernatural species, like vampires and shifters, and then a bunch more species that the author made up herself. You know. Not really rooted in folklore. So, "Chitahs" and "Sensors" are her own thing.
As usual, this is set in a shifter "pack." This is a very large house filled with people who mostly aren't related to each other, but all the characters pair up as mates. Most of the characters are shifters, and most of those shifters are wolves, but not exclusively. One of the ladies is a tiger and one is a horse. One of the guys is a vampire.
All the supernatural species are opposed to crossbreeding. The primary reason given is that the resulting children might --gasp!-- not have all their powers! The characters are opposed to the idea of producing a hybrid with "watered down" gifts. They act as if this is the primary consideration whenever two people of different species are thinking about getting together. Because, you know how people are. Always deciding romance based on whether the children will be able to turn into a wolf or not. Shifters are more racist and xenophobic than any other "Breed" species, because they are trying to produce a purebred shifter who can be an "alpha."
"Alphas" are especially problematic. They rule over shifters based on birth alone. It is NOT a meritocracy. Nobody can go away to school and come back after training to become the alpha of a shifter pack. In fact, the alpha of this book series appears to be a completely uneducated, unemployed guy. Despite this, he has complete authority over the pack, and not only decides who is or is not a member, but he also can control who is allowed to date in the pack. In this particular story, he even volunteers Virgil to go do manual labor for another pack, without even consulting Virgil, and he outright says that he doesn't think he should have to talk to Virgil before he commits him to something like that. The alpha has extra powers, including the ability to calm shifters with the sound of his voice. And, most risibly-- the ability to magically thicken his penis. No, he can't shapeshift into other humanoid forms. He can't grow and shrink like Ant-Man. No, no. The author truly had the thought process that alphas should JUST have the power to magically thicken their penises, and nothing else.

Anyway.
The two leads of this story are Krys and Virgil. Virgil is one of those much-maligned crossbreeds. His father was a "Gravewalker," which is one of the author's made-up species. They're basically necromancers, or spiritual mediums, but they have no offensive abilities. They're just long-lived people who can see ghosts. Because Virgil is a crossbreed, he also has the ability to take a wolf form. Over the course of the last several books, we have learned bit by bit that Virgil is an over-the-top personality. He's bisexual, gregarious, and often nude.
(That is a separate problem with this world. The author keeps claiming that shifters don't care about nudity. But, time and again, characters prove that they really do care about nudity. They keep going on about how aroused they are at the sight of someone else nude, or how embarrassed they are to be seen naked themselves. Even if they're a shapeshifting character who has a perfectly nonsexual explanation for why they happen to be naked. This problem persists with this book. Early in the story, Krys and Virgil take turns using the same shower, and the reader is treated to the idea that the men are really aroused by each other after all.)
The reader has never learned much about Krys. He has largely been a non-person in the series up until now.
This particular novel is not the worst example in this book series. That's why I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1. And the reason for that is because so much of the plot focused upon something outside of the M/M romance. Namely, we followed a kidnapping and rescue mission for "Cleo," the amnesiac teenage member of this pack picked up a couple books ago. In this installment we finally find out what Breed(s) Cleo can claim as her own. We find out how she wound up losing all her memories. And, then there is a rescue operation.
It is difficult to give a 1-star rating for a book about rescuing a kidnapped supernatural teenage girl. However, as far as the romance goes?
This ain't it.
This was clearly an M/M romance written by a heterosexual woman. While the characters do point out the idea of discrimination against crossbreeds, there is almost no discussion of homophobia whatsoever. As in, I literally don't think anyone even mentions the word, "homophobia." Krys has never dated men before now, and has never once told anyone, including himself, that he is queer in any way. Virgil is openly bisexual, but dismissive of the fact that he was often limited to female partners up until now because of homophobia from prior decades (because he was born in the 1800s), or just because of a simple lack of options now.
There was no talk about internalized homophobia. These characters are supposed to be VERY long-lived (as in, more than 200 years old), but they have no internalized homophobia at all? When they discuss the possibility of dating, there is no argument about masculine or feminine gender roles?
You can usually tell when an M/M romance is written by a straight woman because there is absolutely no trepidation or argument about being on the receiving end for anal sex. Straight women write sex scenes for men where two men suddenly know --inherently-- how to give all these expert blowjobs. Nevermind that Krys has never touched another man's penis before in his life. Krys is portrayed as a fairly masculine guy, and he has no qualms about needing to work out with another man who is going to be on the receiving end? What, do straight women just think ALL gay men love that? And we're all completely fearless and totally willing to put ourselves in any sexual position, no questions asked?
It is also somewhat alarming that these are two men potentially hundreds of years old, and there was absolutely no discussion about using condoms or PrEP. I guess because they're supernatural, we're supposed to think they're immune to most illnesses? I wonder if Virgil might still be a carrier of HIV, even if he can't contract it himself, and he has just been shamelessly spreading HIV across the human population since the 1980s?
No other characters actually said or did anything homophobic in this story. Krys made ONE reference to the idea that he was afraid his cousin wouldn't accept him for who he really is, and that is the only part of his coming-out story that I found believable. But, these are characters living in an isolated town in a very rural area, populated by supernatural people who believe in racial purity, many of whom are hundreds of years old. And you expect me to believe NO ONE in this town called Krys and Virgil faggots?
Are you serious?
If a gay man had written this, we would have included scenes of Virgil putting his arm around Krys' shoulder at the movie theater, only to then pull it away after a middle-aged woman kept staring and scowling, and a overweight redneck behind them called them a couple fairies and started mocking them to his buddies. This could culminate in straight guys egging each other on to actually beat up the queer men.
There would have been at least a couple people in this pack who would NOT have accepted the same-sex couple when they came out. Maybe Eden would have taken a condescending tone and explained that, based on her position with the Higher Authority, she really couldn't encourage shifters to engage in a lifestyle that could result in fewer shifter babies born. One of their straight guy friends would gently tease them about who's a top and who's a bottom, and try to mock Krys for being less of a man now. A couple women would decide that the idea of Krys and Virgil together was just really hot, and the women would demand details about their sex lives, or maybe even ask the guys to kiss for them, or to let the women watch the next time they do something sexual.
At least one straight person would demand to know if this meant that Virgil was "the wife," and therefore he should be treated like a female member of the pack. Then a bunch of the straight women would get indignant at the idea of a man being treated like one of them, and they might try to officially say he is not welcome in their "heat house."
(That's a fun detail. The author of this series likes the idea that shifter women go into heat, so they need to have a separate house where the women go to masturbate a lot, alone, when they're going through that time of the month. That's special and classy.)
In short, this is NOT realistically how a same-sex couple would be treated. There would be way more anxiety and trepidation on the part of the queer men, and not just about sex acts. There would be a whole journey about what this means for their identity, and their gender roles, and how they view themselves. They would struggle with their own internalized homophobia, and they might have a conversation about how they're going to react when they hear about other gay men who like to dress in drag. Are they going to be supportive, or does that much femininity still bother them? Do they need to have a longer conversation about labels and identity, maybe to address the possibility that they might be trans or nonbinary? Are they going to try to befriend other queer people, or are they going to be content as the only queer people in their town?
And at the conclusion of all this non-realistic gay love, our main characters had to get their alpha's fucking permission to date.

This is the latest installment of the author’s Black Arrowhead series. I honestly can’t believe we are already nine books in as it doesn’t seem that long ago when it all started. The Black Arrowhead pack is made up of mostly wolf shifters. They also have a vampire, a chitah and even a horse. Each member carried their own baggage and various life problems and a different couple find each other in each book. This time two male members of the pack finally get together. Virgil has been the most lively, talkative, funny and flamboyant of the pack. He’s unapologetically(now)bisexual and is a cross breed of grave walker in addition to his wolf. Krys is the handsome, brooding, motorcycle riding tough guy that kind of keeps to himself. He is friends with Virgil while Virgil has a huge crush on Krys.
Cleo is a young teenage girl that the pack rescued from a place that was doing experiments on her. She has no memories of a previous life. She’s part of the pack now. Krys and Virgil spend a lot of time with her as she’s had a rough go of life up until now. When the pack master send the three on a road trip things change between the two men. And no,not while the girl is present.
Every time I read(listen)one of these books I say that this is my favorite of the couples and this time was no different. Krys ended up being quite the heart throb for me which I wasn’t expecting. Virgil has always been kind of out there but with Krys he’s a bit different. I mean he’ll always be out there, but now he’s more settled out there if that makes sense. I was there for it! I loved my time with these two and with all the members of the pack. All wasn’t easy and there’s even some suspense involved. As usual, Dark’s quality of writing shines throughout the listen. Narrator Nicole Poole is the extraordinary voice(voices)of all Dark’s many books making her a favorite of mine. Easy 5 stars all around for me.

Another good addition to the Black Arrowhead Series. I was surprised but in no way disappointed that The Forsaken is an M/M romance. I thought that Dannika did Krys & Virgil’s love story justice. So much emotion was packed in the pages, as well as some much needed laugher due to Virgil’s antics. The gas station scene with Virgil’s wolf completely cracked me up. It’s been pretty obvious that Virgil has had more than friends feelings for Krys since they first met and when Krys & Virgil go on a cross country road trip they slowly open up to each other and admit how they feel.
I think it helped that they were away from their pack as it allowed them to work out what they are to each other before coming out to the pack. Their Alpha Tak has also banned casual sex between pack members as if they break up or more than one person likes someone it can cause huge issues within the pack. I loved learning more about their backgrounds. My heart broke for everything Krys has been through and it’s no wonder his wolf is so volatile and why he’s so adamant of the pack locking the windows and doors.
Even though Lucian has his cameras up that are being constantly monitored and they live in such a small area. Cleo also had her own story arc alongside Krys & Virgil. Man, I just wanted to reach through the pages and hug the stuffing out of her for everything she goes through during this book. Like what the f*ck? I felt so bad for her but she also found her people and exactly where she belongs. I’m looking forward to reading more from this series as it continues. I’d happily read anything that Dannika decides to write. I’d definitely recommend this book, series, Mageriverse and author to everyone.

Another crazy love story.
I loved seeing Kris and Virgil get their happy ending (beginning). Virgil has crushed on Kris for so long and the two compliment each other so well. Seeing them open up to each other and be vulnerable was heartwarming and emotional.
Cleo rounded out their little family. That poor girl had been through so much and who better to take care of her than those two who have been where she’s at.

The love story I never knew I needed
Absolutely the love story I never knew I needed. When it's two men it can seen sort of off putting but as with everything else this author has written this is the most beautiful story, she writes from the heart & her characters are always real, flawed & fully presented in such a way that it's just perfect. Absolutely the love story I never knew I needed. When it's two men it can seen sort of off putting but as with everything else this author has written this is the most beautiful story, she writes from the heart & her characters are always real, flawed & fully presented in such a way that it's just perfect. Love d it! Always knew Virgil was a bucket of fun. Part personality part defense from past trauma. Kris the sexy wild man with dark trauma that help shape his ferral nature and protectiveness. It was wonderful to see the vunerable side of both these two characters. Kris at some point seemed innocently virginal but he has an explorative nature! Good for him! I love his closeness with Cleo and seeing him morph from just a packmate to a dad was beautiful.

I’m really glad Dannika did a MM romance 👏🏻 I was sad when she didn’t do one for the couple in her other series so I’m glad she did this one.
This romance was ok but I’ve noticed that sometimes Dannika’s work lacks that big moment when the couple finally gets together. They tend to feel a little lackluster and not at big as they should. This story unfortunately felt that way to me. It’s a friends to lovers, gay awakening romance but the moment they finally come together felt a little anticlimactic.
But I love Virgil and Krys. They’re sweet and I’m happy they’re together. I love the overarching story too which helps.
My favorite part of this was Krys and Cleo’s relationship. Cleo is such a sweetie and I’m happy her and Krys are so close.
Audio Performance: Nicole Poole is SUCH a good narrator. She killed this as always. I found myself forgetting the book was narrated by a woman lol

This narrator continues to amaze me. The author always uses the same narrator, and every time she proves why. She can shift between voices so effortlessly that full conversations sound like entirely different people. She’s phenomenal, and she always elevates the story.
This time, we finally get Chris and Virgil’s story — and it was worth the wait.
We’ve known these two from the very beginning, but never truly understood their pasts. Getting real depth and backstory made their connection feel so much more meaningful. They didn’t come together because of their trauma, but because they understood each other in a way few people could.
Their personalities couldn’t be more opposite.
Chris is rough, tough, and absolutely the Alpha type. Virgil? Total party animal — hilarious, chaotic, and full of life. But opposites attract, and these two prove it beautifully.

Her part of the story was emotional and necessary. I’d love to see the author revisit her when she’s older — maybe not now, but someday. There’s definitely more to explore.

I really liked this book. I have read all of Dannika Dark's series. Because this is book 9, I feel like her stories are more about making sure you get to see and hear from all the previous pack members. I really enjoy that. I feel like I'm going back home to my favorite characters. It's nice to know that they are not forgotten and shoved to the side for the next story.
The only negative side is that it sometimes takes away from the focus of the current love story.
I have been rooting for Krys and Virgil from the start. I was so afraid that Krys was going to be with Cleo after she grew up. But that part of the story wrapped itself up nicely. I love that Dannika took on writing a M/M romance. It was nicely done.
I loved that there was a cameo from a character from Cognito. When I saw that's where Krys and Virgil was heading, I was really hoping for that and wondering which of the Mageri characters it would be. Loved it but it was too short!
I get so excited when I receive the email newsletter from Dannika Dark. I always squeal out loud. She is truly one of my absolute favorite authors.

I have enjoyed hearing Virgil’s jokes in the previous books, and I was excited to see that this one is both Virgil and Krys’ story. This book in particular gave me all sorts of emotions. I was happy to see that Cleo’s arc continued in this book. Being able to see more of Virgil and get a better understanding of him was great to see. I really enjoyed Darcy. She was like a nonstop energizer battery and I can see how that can be tiring for Virgil, but she was a gem and her antics made me laugh. Krys, I don’t want to give anything away, but this book is worth a read/listen. I really enjoyed seeing some of Krys' past too. I feel like I was able to understand what makes them tick, and finally see why they do certain things. Cleo’s arc was integral to both Virgil and Krys and I don’t think I would want it any other way.
The narrator, Nicole Poole does an amazing job portraying the characters. Nicole is a very talented narrator, and she kept me engaged till the very end. The tones and inflections were spot on for me.

While each of the novels in the Black Arrowhead series features a romance, there are overall series arcs, the one most dominate in The Forsaken is Cleo’s arc. I strongly recommend listening to them in the order of their release.
Virgil is a shifter, but he can also see and interact with spirits. Because of this, many traditional packs have rejected him. Virgil is charismatic, a tease, a charmer and outspoken with his sexuality, but also holds himself off a little because he fears rejection. The Arrowhead pack is unconventional and comprises chosen members. Krys, is a guarded wolf shifter who is grateful for the pack, but keeps his wolf away as he is volatile. He and Virgil are close friends, but Virgil’s feelings run deeper. When the two travel cross-country, the intense situation, and a little help from a spirit spark the flames between them. For those, like me, who have listened to all the books, their destination is familiar.
Holy hotness and intense storylines! I went into this blind, as I typically do, and was surprised to find an M/M romance… which Dark handled wonderfully. In retrospect, there were plenty of clues! I loved getting both Virgil’s and Krys’s backstories. Dark really peeled back the layers, allowing us to see the pain both men had experienced. All of which made me want a happily ever after for both of them.
Cleo’s arc continued in this novel and was woven masterfully into their story. Road trip anyone? The trip included Darcy, a ghost that followed Virgil home from a bar. I adored her and the trip was filled with laughter, wolf shenanigans and more until it turned dark. From the moment Krys’s phone rang, I could not stop listening. Intense scenes, battles, and horrors await you.
The romance felt genuine, and I loved seeing them open up and trust each other. The story didn’t feel rushed, and Dark allowed all the threads the time they deserved. We got to spend some time with the pack as well, and I finished with a smile.
Nicole Poole narrates and, as always, did a stellar job giving voice to these characters. She really captures Virgil’s unabashed self. I am curious to see how many more Black Arrowhead books we will get.

Lo amé mucho más de lo que esperaba. Absolutely loved this book! I loved seeing a different side of Kris. He's always been quiet and in the background and in this one I fell in love with him! He's such a loyal, protective, and caring man! Virgil has always been crazy and no fs given and loved the relationship between the two. They are perfect for each other! Cleo is an amazing girl and finding out a new half breed in her is so cool! She's the strong and silent type. The ending was so sweet 🥹

I absolutely loved learning more about both Krys and Virgil's stories and seeing how their story unfolded together. I also enjoyed learning more about Cleo and her past. Dannika always captures so much emotion in her stories, and this one made me both laugh and cry. This is probably my favorite story in this series yet. 🖤

I love how members of this pack fit together so wonderfully where they didn’t fit anywhere else. They are different and the pack allows them to be themselves. This acceptance makes the pack better and stronger. This is a beautiful book that embraces love. It embraces romantic love, it embraces the love of friendship, it embraces family.

Narration was a 10 out of 10
I tried but just couldn’t get into it. Towards the middle I had skip so much of the story that I started to lose interest. It was not my genre. I did finish it so that was a positive.

Endless possibilities
It was heartfelt. I enjoyed it immensely. It was sad, funny, heartwarming, so many emotions triggered while reading g this book. Cleo was an interesting character & the fit was beautiful with Chris & Taz. I loved this series especially Tak.

Once again the author does not disappoint! A lovely fantasy with our favorite wolf pack, which also includes some other animals shifters. It was nice to see another pair mated. I don't want to go into details, but don't miss it!

I absolutely love all of these books. The stories always bring something new to Dannika Dark's Mageverse. I look forward to the new adventures and character developments every book brings. Nicole Poole also has great character vocalization and has continued to solidify each character's persona.
