I might be a new fan on the Regnier train, but I've quickly come to recognize that when this author comes out with a book, it's bound to be a good time. PETSHOP is a quirky 'what if?' story that might be aimed at a younger audience but is an absolute riot of all ages.
The clever whimsy of this magical world reminds me a little bit of Diana Wynne Jones, the story lighthearted and the scenarios touched with a dollop of ridiculous, but layered with a depth that gives it substance.
Because it's not just the story of a thirteen-year-old kid inheriting a magical pet shop filled with talking creatures. It's the story of a boy thrust into the unknown, who has to rely on his own judgement and experience to make decisions and move forward. He makes mistakes, yet owns them and moves forward with courage, determination, and the help of a few new friends.
Part coming-of-age, part scavenger hunt thriller, part heist whodunnit, there's hardly a dull moment! If you're up for some amateur shopkeepers negotiating with grouchy wizards, tangling with pixies, and problem solving with incorrigible kittens, this is the book for you. But if animal companions and baby dragons aren't enough to convince you to join in this crazy adventure, there's also hot cocoa and cinnamon bread.
Because sure, your shop might be full of magical chaos with escaped animals you've never heard of, no idea how the currency works, and a castle guard accusing you of royal theft, but there's a host of sprites on your side and a bakery across the street with amazing treats and better friends.

The most Dangerous Pet Shop is the first novel in a new middle grade series from Paul Regnier.
In this book Tristan discovers that his grandfather has been keeping something from him. An entire magical world exists just on the other side of a mirror in the apartment.
Of course as soon as he steps foot in this new world everything that can go wrong, does.
But Tristan proves to be a very intelligent and resourceful boy. I was impressed with how he handled each obstacle placed before him. He even had a great sense of who to trust.
My only real critique is that the adults in the magical world (even the ones who were also from his own world) seemed all to happy letting a thirteen year old live alone in a pet shop full of magical and incredibly dangerous creatures.
Over all an enjoyable read that I'm sure will delight kids and adults alike.

I love the author's imaginative stories, and sense of humor (kind of like mine😊). I would have loved this story when I was in middle school!! It's a good thing I still enjoy a good book, even if it's not specifically for adults! The story is fast-paced and fun!
Thank you to the author for the advance e-copy of this book! All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

This review is posted on behalf of my teenage daughter who read the book:
"I liked the cat a lot and the crazy man in the tunnels and his friend the skull. I like how the main character so easily runs the pet shop but also how horribly and humorously he messes up so many things."

This book is one part questing, one part mystery, and one part cozy fantasy.
We read this book as a read aloud, and my boys really liked it!
Nynx the Withercat was a favorite character, and we really liked all the other different magical creatures (which included dragons and pixies, as well as new creatures). There was a book about the magical creatures, and there were pictures of the pages, which I thought was really fun, although I wished there were more!
We enjoyed the scenes with the Madman and his friend, the boys thought they were funny (just as a warning for parents though, because I know this will bother someone, the Madman's "friend" is a skull that he talks to... like Wilson the volleyball).
My boys loved the reveal of who the thief was! They thought it was a good twist. It was a fun little mystery. They weren't ready for the book to end and wanted it to keep going.
