A broken marriage.
A long road home.
A family she never stopped loving.

Melanie Haverly once left Silverleaf—and the powerful Kentucky horse-farm family behind it—determined to make her own way in the world.

Ten years later, everything has fallen apart.

With two teenagers and nowhere else to turn, Mel returns to the gates of Silverleaf…unsure if the family she hurt will ever truly welcome her back. But inside the grand house and rolling pastures, something unexpected is waiting.

Second chances. Old wounds that still need healing. And the powerful reminder that family—no matter how complicated—can still be the place where broken hearts begin to mend.

SILVERLEAF is the emotional first novel in a heartwarming and dramatic family saga set in the world of Kentucky thoroughbred racing. Perfect for fans of Robyn Carr, Susan Wiggs, and emotional family dramas like This is Us.

Solid Southern Royalty Family Drama. We don't have actual royalty in the United States, but in different areas of the country we do have very rich families - sometimes rich going back many generations, sometimes (particularly over the last century) much newer (ala The Great Gatsby). This is a modern tale of one such family, and Gilbert really does a great job of bringing us - even those of us who themselves rose from "trailer park trash" to having "respectable" jobs and titles like I have - into this world in a stunningly vivid manner that will truly transport you to the hills of western Appalachian horse country from no matter where you may actually live in the world.

Having grown up just miles away from a prominent horse racing facility and event - the Atlanta Steeplechase at Kingston Downs in Kingston, GA - and rubbing elbows with some of the elite of my home County on the borderlands of southern Appalachia and Atlanta due to... well, I never actually knew why and the one thing I was aware of seems a bit too self aggrandizing to proclaim in this review... I actually have enough experience at the fringes of the type of family Gilbert creates in this book to truly say that at least from my perspective, this entire tale was simply all too real.

Yes, including the... let's say "family dynamics"... at play here. Some of which are a lot more universal than just the Southern Elite "royalty" type families, and at least some of which I've seen play out across family, friends, and associates no matter their "status" in "society". Here, Gilbert really manages to bring these elements out as just as real and powerful as the setting she puts the family in, and the two sides of the tale combine rather spectacularly.

One thing that I appreciated that others may not find as appealing is how Gilbert managed to craft a mildly Christian tale here but keep it more muted and more "this exists in this world" level rather than any remotely preachy aspect to it - even the actual prayers in the text are simple meal-based "grace" prayers that are legitimately common throughout the region and not really sectarian at all. More formalized than the joke "Good food, Good meat, Good God let's eat!" prayer you'll hear at some Southern meals, but really at about the same theological depth, at least in the content of the prayers shown in this text. To flip it around a touch, it is really more akin to having an LGBT couple in the tale that everyone simply accepts as they are without making any real fuss about it and without it truly playing a role in the tale. Again, truly just a "this exists and now we're moving on" level. Which will still be too much for some readers, for the same reasons the LGBT couple's presence would be too much for other readers, and hey, you do you. You'll find no judgement from me on that point, but I do appreciate when authors are able to integrate these types of things into their stories - either direction - in this exact manner, and Gilbert truly does an excellent job of this from the Christian side here.

This is Book 1 to a new series, and it does in fact show - we get a fully fleshed out world, one complete tale here (with enough room to follow it going forward without it continuing to be the main focus), and a lot of side stories such that clearly some of them will get their own stories, while seemingly others may be a bit of a running plotline of sorts perhaps through the entire series. It will be interesting to see how Gilbert plays these lines in particular, and one great thing to note is that even as I write this review the day before this book actually releases to the public, Book 2 is actually coming in just a couple of weeks! I for one am very excited about that for several reasons, chief among them being I won't have read over 100 books between books in a series for a change! :D But seriously, this is absolutely a tremendous setup for a series that we're going to want to come back into this world at least a few times, and I'm truly glad the first of those is very soon.

Very much recommended.

Silverleaf is book one of the new Kentucky Silverleaf Series by Kellie Coates Gilbert. I was a little worried that I wouldn’t like this series. I was wrong. I loved it from the minute I started the first page. This series is about a family that is involved with horse racing. I know Kellie’s writing well enough that I should have known it would mostly be based on the family and relationships. I don’t know what I was worried about!

Silverleaf is the farm owned by the Haverly’s. They not only raise race horses but, they also race them. They are one of the long standing families in horse racing and have had several champions in their history. I thought I was going to be bogged down with the details of the horse racing business and instead I’m so locked into this family and all that is happening in their lives. They all are now living on the farm and most of them have their own homes on the estate.

Revie is the matriarch of the family and Graham is her husband of 40 years. They have three adult children, two daughters named Mel and Caroline and Beau is their son. He still lives in the house with his parents.

Don’t forget to read the Afterword by Leona Jefferson! She is the maid and keeps the house running to the satisfaction of Revie. She has been around a while and takes care of everyone. She is a hoot and you will enjoy hearing from her. The afterword in Leona’s voice is absolutely genius!

If you like a great series like I do, then do yourself a favor and grab Silverleaf, the first book of the Kentucky Silverleaf Series. They appear to be coming out in quick succession so you won’t have to wait long in between books. These are definitely a must add to your nightstand. I know you’ll love them. Until next time…Happy Reading!

Rebuilding relationships
A very different book to what I usually read, it was nevertheless interesting and a good study of human relayionships in the Haverly family!
‘Black sheep’, Melanie, flees Seattle and an abusive husband to take her teenage children to safety at her family home, a high-end race-horse farm in Kentucky. Warmly welcomed by almost everyone, Mel must nevertheless gain her mother’s acceptance and affection before she can truly feel at home as she always has the feeling that she falls short.
A very different book to what I usually read, I appreciated the author’s descriptive language, flowing writing style and well-informed discussion of the routines of the horse-racing stables and the mood she generates in her audience of the excitement, tension and even fury of spectators during an actual horse race. The character portrayal of all three generations of this wealthy family clearly demonstrates their individual personalities which affects their interaction with one another and the decisions they make. Some light-hearted moments (especially Lacy Rae’s mechanical solution 😊) alternate well with the edgier moments of the story.
I received a free advance copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

From the moment you open this book, you know that Kellie Coates Gilbert has a true winner in Silverleaf. This is Book One in her new Kentucky series about the Haverly family, breeders and trainers of Kentucky thoroughbred horses at Silverleaf. From the moment we meet Melanie (Haverly) Lindell and her two teenage children, you know that this story is going to be emotionally charged. Melanie is returning to her family’s horse farm, after leaving an abusive marriage and life in Seattle, to hopefully be welcomed back into the fold and to give her children the good life they deserve. Her mother, Revie, may not be happy to see her return, but she is hoping her father, Graham and her siblings will. She is doubtful because of the way she turned her back on all of them and went to marry and live in Seattle. Melanie wants to pull her own weight and work for the farm, not just live there. She has so much healing to do. Will coming home give her the chance to mend the broken family relationships and strengthen herself to move forward. And so begins this family saga which had me in tears, smiles, and unexpected moments that made it very difficult to put this book down. The legacy of the Haverly family and Silverleaf - I can’t wait to start the next book in the series.

“You worry too much, Mel. This place has a way of healing folks, even the young ones. You’ll see. Silverleaf’s seen a lot of new beginnings.”

“I was born into the world of horses”

“Raised right here on what used to be a Common-wealth land grant.”

“What our family built here isn’t just a farm-it’s a legacy, rooted in grit and heart and generations of hope.”

Silverleaf is the first book in the Kentucky Silverleaf series by Kellie Coates Gilbert.
The Haverly family is complex, full of secrets, loud, stubborn is an understatement, and have big hearts.
What a wonderful look into the world of horses, horse racing, and the beautiful stately homes, and landscape of the Kentucky bluegrass.
I am ready for book two and more of the lives of the Haverly family.

I received an ARC prior to publication and decided to voluntarily review it.

Excellent start to a new series. Mel returns home, to her family farm, SILVERLEAF, escaping an abusive relationship, with her children Lacy Rae and Ryan. She is welcomed home and embraced into the family,
Just in time for the Friday Night Family Dinners. The family goal is to have a horse run in the Kentucky Derby.

The book is full of family and sibling dynamics,
Plus vivid descriptions of Kentucky and horse racing traditions.

The reader may find their hearts pounding as the SILVERLEAF horse, Royal Julep races in the Blue Grass Stakes trying to qualify for the Kentucky Derby. What tricks will Revie’s nemesis Memphis Santopolo try to pull? Can the Haverly family survive the test?

Can’t wait to read more in the series.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. This review is my honest opinion.

SILVERLEAF by Kellie Coats Gilbert
Book one of Kentucky Silverleaf series
Release Date April 16,2026

Even though Melanie Haverly’s mother told her “ if you walk out that door, with HIM don’t bother coming back”. Melinda put up a lot trying to make her marriage work. But the day her husband, Randy slapped her. She knew it was time to take her teenage children and go home. She would do whatever I talk to make things right with her mother to keep her children safe.
The Haverly’s were a good family. They took her and her children in, as if she never left.
And what her mother did the first night she came home when she thought everyone was sleeping just tore at my heart. A mother’s love is a strong emotion.
And don’t forget to read the epilogue. I absolutely loved it.

Mel and her two children are on a long road trip to Kentucky fleeing life as they know it. Along the white fences, vibrant green grass and beautiful horses in Kentucky is Silverleaf, home to Mel, the prodigal daughter who left home some twenty years ago. This book is an enticing look into the Haverly family whom all live on their sprawling horse ranch. The author gives us snippets of each of these wonderful characters. How they react to Mel’s return, their daily interactions, the work and hardship of raising horses. How this Haverly family and the many generations before, are long on tradition, hopes and dreams of raising a horse worthy of the Kentucky Derby. But most of all how a family comes together no matter what or who is trying to take away their dream.

Thank you to the author for this book. This review is my opinion without remuneration for the gifted arc.

This was such a good book! The main character, Mel Lindell, is relocating from Seattle back to her home in Kentucky. Her arrival is unexpected and at least one member of her family is not exactly excited to see her. She shoulders through as she and her children settle into life on a thoroughbred farm. I was pleased to find that Mel didn’t jump into a relationship at any point in this book. It was a getting -to-know everyone kind of book. Not to say I don’t see romance in any of the next 7 expected books in the series. If you’re a fan of fairly short, easy to read romances I’m sure you will like this book,

Melanie Haverly left home against her families wishes to marry Randy. Her mother told her if she left, not to try and return. When the marriage ended due to drinking and abuse, Mel returns home with her two teenage children. Scared and uncertain if she would be welcome, the door opens on family supper night. She is immediately brought back into the family fold and told that family will take care of each other. As they prepare for horse race season, a lot happens with everyone chipping in to help. I really enjoyed the start of this series and can't wait for the next book. I received an advanced reader copy of this book via Book Funnel, and this is my honest review.

Even if you don't know a lot about horseracing, you will enjoy Silverleaf by Kellie Coats Gilbert! Melanie Haverly grew up at Silverleaf but she left the horseracing kingdom behind and left for Seattle years ago! Now her marriage has ended and she is back with two teenagers not knowing how her family will receive her! You will be amazed at how Melanie is accepted back even if her mother is still trying to control her life! Melanie and her children find healing at the horse ranch. I recommend Silverleaf to others. I received a complimentary e-book from the author. This is my honest opinion.

After struggling with Randy’s alcoholism, she’s returning with her two teenagers & It doesn’t take her long to become a part of the family once again. In the long run she realizes that she belongs at Silverleaf & was ready to become a part of the Haverly family legacy once again. Thank you Kellie Coates Gilbert for entertaining us. I really enjoyed that this book was set in beautiful Kentucky and around the horse industry. I grew up in Kentucky and worked with racehorses and worked at both Keeneland and Churchill Downs, I found that the author's research about the horse racing business and her descriptive writing style made for an enjoyable book that I couldn't put down. The opening description of Melanie driving up to the farm
and going home, brought memories back of my own venture back home after having been away. I look forward to reading more of this heartwarming, family sage.

We’re off to the races and a new series and a new family in horse country.
The Haverlys are the modern Falcon Crest or Dallas family of their generation.
Daughter Melanie slinks home with two kids and her tail between her legs to her tight lipped opinionated mother, the Queen of mean.
There are other siblings and grandkids to round out the chaos.
To stir the pot, malevolent Memphis is back in town. I’d pay money to watch a fight between her and Revie.
I had to watch the 1973 replay of Secretariat winning hugely after finishing this book.
Thanks to the author for the advance copy.

Silverleaf, the first in the Kentucky Silverleaf series by Kellie Coates Gilbert has me pumped up and rooting for this family. This first installment introduces the Haverly family and brings Mel home after leaving years ago. I can’t wait to see where this story takes us. The Haverly family has a legacy to live up to and they are fiercely loyal. There are high expectations for them all and I can tell that their upcoming stories will be full of drama and growth. I would highly recommend.

Some times you have to admit defeat and run back to mom and family. It's hard to do, but it's where you're meant to be. Especially if it's a lavish Kentucky horse farm where you grew up. Your mom is still that hard-nosed, rigid-backed matriarch of a large close knit family that you love. Bringing two teenagers back with you is the right thing to do and everything seems to be slipping back into the norm of when you were young.

Silverleaf is an absolute gem that hooked me from the first page! Kellie has woven an engaging, uplifting, and realistic story that dives deep into the complexities of family, relationships, and new beginnings. If you love family drama mixed with the thrilling pageantry of high-stakes horse racing, this is for you. I’m officially invested and impatiently waiting for book two to see what’s next for the Haverly family!

Intoxicating

I found myself “sitting in the stands” (figuratively) with the Haverly clan and rooting on Legacy. This family had me from page 1 until I ran out of pages. Excited for round 2.

I loved this book.
It is a family saga similar to the Maui series.
Parts of the story also remind me of the Teton Mountain series.
This is one of my favorite stories of hers.

I'm a horse lover and follow the Triple Crown races every year, so the new series by Kellie Coates Gilbert intrigues me!

In Kentucky Silverleaf Series Book 1, Silverleaf, we are introduced to the Haverly family. Ten years ago, daughter Melanie left the family farm - and family - behind to make her own life. Now, with a broken marriage in her rear-view mirror, and two kids in tow, she returns to Silverleaf, where her family welcomes her back into their fold. Silverleaf is preparing for their star thoroughbred to run in the Kentucky Derby, and there is a lot going on - in the racing world and in the family.

I loved this book! The characters completely drew me in. I can't wait to see how they grow and adapt to the challenges they face throughout the racing season. The only downside is the series is not fully published yet. Can't wait to read the remaining books!

I'm jealous of the time Kellie was able to spend in Kentucky doing her research, but admittedly, I'm living vicariously through her writing. :) Thanks, Kellie!
