Every once in a while, you read a book that feels like it was written for you. I'm lucky that I was able to snag an ARC of RAVENOUS because it definitely felt like a book written for me.

I loved that it was about a horror novelist and horror novels. In the book, Kirk Quade is tapped to finish the final book by famed novelist Whistler Dodd, who died before he could compete his epic series about an alternate reality called the Parallax. To do so, Kirk must write the book in Dodd's secluded house in a couple weeks and follow the author's original outline.

Of course, if Dodd comes back, Kirk must not let him finish the book.

If this seems like an ominous set up, strap in, because RAVENOUS becomes is a steady stroll into insanity. Along the way, we meed Dodd's young editor Oswin, who fears the version of her she sees in reflections. The more time she and Kird spend in the house, the more twisted this story becomes—and the more terrifying the images in the mirrors become.

RAVENOUS unfolds a little like a mystery—why couldn't Dodd finish his final book? why was Kirk, an unproven ghostwriter, tapped to finish it? and what does the the death of talk show host Ace Chilton have to do with all of it—but readers won't see the twists and turns coming. At times, RAVENOUS feels like a fever dream; other times, it feels like a nightmare. By the end, you won't be sure if you're in the real world or stuck in the Parallax with Kirk and Oswin. From the start, though, the book is compelling and beautifully written.

If you like horror—how authors or filmmakers peddle fear, where their terrifying ideas come from—and you've ever had a hunch the the creepy book you're reading was inspired by something darker and real, you'll love RAVENOUS's meta, topsy-turvy stories.

Have you ever been engrossed in a book so much it feels real? Dax Dagger’s Ravenous not only explores that theme, but takes it to the next dimension.

At times this felt like reading a combination of the novelisation of Labyrinth, The Langoliers, and The Mist, all while being beaten about the head and neck by a pillowcase filled with WTF!

While cosmic horror can be an expansive topic, Dagger has managed to create a claustrophobic environment that is filled with unease and uncertainty.

Wonderfully written and full of questions, twists, and turns, I absolutely loved this. If you are looking for a nice wee existential crisis, please read this!

Thanks NetGalley and HQ for this ARC.
