Fallow

Rate this book
Colm has suddenly found himself the leader of the local branch of the Banna Irish Mafia. He likes the power, but he never really fit in with the other killers and criminals. His inherent ethics and empathy have made him feel separate, and he was resigned to living a lonely, isolated life, for better or worse.

Enter Fallow: a true serial killer with a bucketload of issues, but also a raw sexual magnetism that Colm can't afford. Fallow is on a quest to find someone he lost, and when the opportunity presents, he decides to take Colm along for the ride.

Fallow is the second book in the series Sins of the Banna, but can be read as a standalone. Contains explicit sexual content and is only suitable for adult readers.

Colm is funny, like legit funny! He might be my favourite Erin character ever - was I expecting so much humour in the first quarter of the book, I was not. Was I delighted and snorting out loud scaring the cat, I was.

Colm is trying to wrangle the Banna at the farm… and honestly doing the best he can. He is an ethical mafioso and I love that dichotomy 😍, it makes him so interesting

Fallow is a feral gremlin who is touch averse and loves murder in all its sweet forms. He is also quite the mystery initially before we discover his tender parts 🥹

They are a match made in heaven. Erin Russell brings all their intense emotional writing style digging deep into the characters but this time with this almost effervescent humour- effervescent and self deprecating and also cynical - gah I cannot describe it well but it is amazing. I was moved to tears one minute, appalled the next and then laughing out loud after. It was an amazing experience. Not to mention, the power dynamic between the two makes them so extremely hot.

This book has everything - might be my favourite story Russell has written and that is saying something.

P.s.all the ham and baked goods typecasting made me super hungry - cards are my kryptonite- wbu?

Pps the NB and ND rep is beautifully done, exceptional

Fallow is book two in the Sins of the Banna series. This MM dark romance story is about Colm and Fallow.

I was looking forward to this story, but I am sad to say this book wasn’t for me. I did enjoy the opening scene and how Colm and Fallow met, but after that I was disappointed in the story. I knew this was going to be a fast burn/high heat, but it just didn’t work for me. They both seemed so horny and kept going at it right from the start, but it got to be too much and I felt like it took away from the story. Fallow used sex to calm down, so I felt like he was using Colm. Fallow had rules and I loved how Colm always respected them. Unfortunately I had a hard time seeing these two connect, and I just really wasn’t a fan of their dynamic.

I did love seeing the characters from His Reaper by Cora Rose, but thank goodness I already read that book because otherwise it would have spoiled it for me.

The ending of this book had me a bit frustrated because I didn’t feel like we got any resolutions for Fallow or Colm’s problems. When it came to their relationship, it was new for both of them, but Fallow and Colm were ready to put each other first so that is definitely a positive. I am wondering if we will get more of them in the next book in this series.

I really enjoy Erin Russell’s writing! I loved non-binary (he/they) bratty serial killer Fallow and sweetheart gang leader Colm as they go on a slightly murderous road trip across the country to find Fallow’s sibling. This book features two non-binary characters and I enjoyed the way they were portrayed; Fallow does take a while to use Ellery’s pronouns correctly, but I actually enjoyed the path that lead them down to get on better terms with each other.

There is a lot of sex in this, which is spicy as heck, but also very well written in the sense that Fallow has sensory issues and doesn’t like the feeling of skin touching his. I enjoyed how Colm modified everything to make being with him easier for Fallow; honestly other than being a murderer and a criminal, Colm was just a walking bunch of green flags 😹

This one only loses a star from me because it felt… transitory maybe? It didn’t feel like its own story, only like it was setting up the next one in the series. I was also confused with the brief addition of the Costello gang, where Ellery was staying, as they were written in a way that made me feel like I should already know who they were… turns out, they’re characters from another author, Cora Rose, but as I haven’t read that series, I was left feeling a little confused!

I’m going to keep reading Russell’s books as I enjoy them, but I have to say this one didn’t hit quite as hard as Savage! But I am very much looking forward to the next book, Lucky!

This is an opposites attract mafia dark romance, featuring Colm and Fallow, and is book two in the Sin Of The Banna series.

Colm becomes the leader of the Irish Mafia but feels out of place because of his morals. When a dangerous serial killer named Fallow pulls him into his search, Colm gets caught up in a dark and intense connection.

This book is a dark, addictive romance with danger around every corner. Colm and Fallow are easy to love. Their connection is intense, messy, and intriguing. The book has a thrilling mix of crime, passion, and emotional stakes. I couldn’t put it down.

Things to expect in this book are:

I wasn't sure what to expect with the 'charming serial killer + cinnamon roll mafia man' but it wasn't to laugh pretty much the whole time. That's basically what happened though and I loved it.

Colm and Fallow...ham sandwich and croissant...I loved their banter. The way they dance around each other had me cracking up. But also, the way they learn and carry a deep respect for one another had a romantic feel to it...in a mafia, 'criminal shit' kinda way. I don't know how to explain it. They both felt like truly unique characters and how their dynamic unfolded was somehow unexpected and completely made sense at the same time. All the stars. Can't wait to see what's next.

I have to say, I love, love, love Fallow—he’s such a fun and chaotic character. I really enjoy the dynamic he and Colm share, and I’m glad their relationship works so well.

This book felt very different from the Possum Hollow universe, but it was a lot of fun! Having read Cora’s His Reaper, it was also fantastic to see the other side of some iconic scenes.

I definitely recommend reading all of the Possum Hollow books, as well as the Sins of the Banna series 👌

I love Fallow!!! This book was so good. I love this series so much! This is book two of sins of Banna. Savage my Maia Prince of Oklahoma stole my heart, but Fallow moved right up there with him. I have read and listened to the audio and they are both fabulous!!! I can’t wait to see what else Erin has in store for us!!! 🖤🖤🖤🖤

4.25. There’s action and spice from the get go. Colm is a cinnamon roll and Fallow is an unhinged black cat. Colm should not be heading up a mafia syndicate as he’s just too sweet! Fallow gets this and sticks around to protect him- I love that! This story thoughtfully explores identity. Fallow, in particular, resists being defined as every time you think you understand them, they shift. Their genderqueer identity and touch aversion is explored in a way that shows there’s no single way to exist or express either. Fallow is to be experienced rather than known and I really liked that. You never fully ‘get’ Fallow and that’s the point. They’re unpredictable in a way that keeps you engaged. I love them as a couple. It very much feels like the start of a larger story. The audiobook is brilliant.

4.5/5 ⭐️

Well that was too damn short!!! I actually loved them as characters and how their relationship developed, but I could’ve done with more outside of the week or so we got from their story 😭 I think I’m obsessed with Fallow and his personality and how he brings out the softness in Colm with the incessant teasing, making that softy mafia giant blush constantly ☺️ I did love the progression of Fallow’s comfortability when it came to touching Colm and becoming more vulnerable not only with letting Colm break his rules, but becoming open about his past. Colm was so patient and respectful of Fallow’s no touching rule so when they finally kissed and touched for real???! Loved it.

Fallow had never kissed anyone before because he never saw the appeal until Colm. He truly had never felt a type of hunger like he felt with Colm. That guy looked at Fallow with cartoon hearts in his eyes and Fallow had never felt anything like that before. A type of warmth and fondness he never knew he needed 🥹 And then there was Colm who became absolutely enamored with this weirdo, murderous sex pest, also finding something he never knew he needed. There wouldn’t be a day where he wasn’t entertained with Fallow’s random facts or the fact that he would gladly be pulled around by him forever because he’d always be incapable of telling him no. And just as Fallow said: “you know who your master is little rabbit, don’t you?” 🤣

There was also little things throughout the book that made me connect with the characters both individually and together which made me want more. Like Fallow is so funny and I need more of him calling Colm his bland ham sandwich lol. Like yes, his man is boring but no one will compare to the way he makes him feel. And then Colm just wanting to be around Fallow all the time after being independent for so long. Like UGH i wish we got more of them together outside of that damn roadtrip!!!

Lastly, I did indeed cry (I wasn’t expecting to). It started off with Fallow telling Colm his name after expressing he wouldn’t because it was too intimate, then shortly thereafter Colm said i love you and Fallow had said, even though he doesn’t really know what love means, all I know is that outside of his sister, he the only one he cared about more than himself (like sorry im sobbing) 😭

The ending of the epilogue was sweet with them expressing it was them against anyone else. The way Fallow said they were a “we” after wanting nothing to do with the Banna, but knowing that since he wasn’t leaving Colm, he had no choice but to be invested and scheme along with him.

At the end of the day, what they had would always be more important than a job because putting each other first would always be their priority.

— quotes

“I can’t stop it. He’s beautiful, like some kind of ferocious angel. The Old Testament ones sent to massacre humans who enjoyed every minute of it, except this one’s been trapped on Earth for millennia and he’s turned into this stubbly, grungy version of a formerly ethereal being.”

“I want to cause pressure that fizzes inside of him so relentlessly, he’s forced to crack. And then I want to devour everything that spills out. It’s been a long time since I’ve hungered for someone quite like this.”

“You really are the most ethical little criminal I’ve ever met. It’s actually adorable.”

“Do you own anything with any kind of personality?” — “Not unless you count.”

“I want to look away, but it’s hard. He’s turned into something magnetic for me. Fuck. Why does being around him feel like this?”

“You really are sweet, you know. It’s disappointing.” — “It’s impossible not to smile a little as I say it, but I’m rewarded by nothing less than Colm—big hunky mafia Colm—fucking blushing. Delicious.”

“The question is, why does everything feel different? I don’t know if it’s just a side effect of being around Fallow—someone so utterly unlike anyone I’ve ever met—but it’s like the fucking air has shifted and the molecules that make up my body are in a different flavor now.”

“Apparently, Colm was born to be the warm little center of the universe when it comes to being normal. Never in a million years would I think I’d be into that, but here we are.“

“You’re sweeter than I expected. For a bland ham sandwich of a man.” (🤣🤣)

“He doesn’t say much, but every time I catch him looking at me, he seems almost fond? Warm? It’s not something I’ve had a lot of experience with. Or really thought I needed.“ — “He practically has cartoon hearts in his eyes.”

“Colm has respected my rules with a shocking kind of diligence, and it’s one of the things that makes him different from almost any man I’ve ever known. He makes me not want to care about my rules, for once.”

“It’s becoming clear to me that even if I live a long, full life, I’ll never meet someone as beautiful as this murderous sex pest.”

“But here I am with the kindest, most emotionally mature man in the history of organized crime, thinking about asking him to touch me again like he did before. Breaking all of my rules, just to keep him close to me.”

“Have you ever kissed anyone before?” — “I never saw the appeal. Until now.”

“I think this is the exact moment I decide I’m going to dedicate my life to making Fallow want to keep me around. Fuck the rest of it. The Banna gave me structure and a purpose, and I’m grateful for that, but I’m realizing it’s okay to want a little bit more and for me, Fallow is that bit more. I’ll do anything it takes. He’s a complete weirdo and it’s perfect.”

“You know who your master is, little rabbit. Don’t you?”

“I want to get what I came for and go back to my bland ham sandwich gangster. This man is clearly more of a decadent black forest gateau. Apparently, that’s not to my taste anymore.” (LOL)

“I’ve always been deeply independent, just like Fallow, but right now I’m fucking aching for him. The thought of losing him when I just found something I didn’t know I needed is too much.”

“I want to go. I’m not leaving Colm.” — “Besides, he’s too boring to survive without me. Plain white bread, and all that. I’m the sprinkles.”

“In all the things I’ve thought I’d do with Fallow, this wasn’t one of them. Feeling his warm, sweaty skin against mine; getting to pick up the vibrations of his moans by pressing open-mouthed kisses against his neck… it’s life changing. I was already committed to keeping him, but there’s no turning back now. Nothing will top this.”

“This is real? You’re coming back to stay with me? Forever?” — “That’s what I want. And I know it’s what you want, because you’re a terrible liar.”

“I love you,” I say, throwing caution to the wind. “All I want is to make you happy. Whatever that looks like.”

“I would never admit it, but I didn’t really understand what the word means. I still don’t. But I can tell you that whatever depth of feeling I hold for my sister, I hold just as much for you. For whatever that’s worth. I know it’s not exactly a hallmark card, but you’re the only person apart from Ellery that I care about more than myself.” (Right so why am i sobbing???!)

“So it’s a we now? You’re included in the Banna business?” I ask. “Well, I’m invested now. I can’t have you running off on a hairbrained scheme and getting murdered, and you can’t exactly leave your dick at home for me. So, we’ll be scheming together.” (Lmao)

“Whatever it is, we’ll deal with it together. Because we’re putting each other first. Fuck the Banna. It’s just a job. This is what’s important.” I gesture between us. “Agreed, little rabbit. You and me.”

3.5⭐️?? I’m having a really tough time rating this one because Colm and Fallow themselves make me want to up the stars but the book as a whole was a bit flat.

I keep wanting to compare this book to the first one in the series and it makes me like this story significantly less 🥴 Savage (the first book) was completely outstanding! It was depthful and emotional, the story line was engaging, and the characters were written so powerfully. So, going into this second book, I expected something similar. However what I got just felt very surface level, abrupt, and random?

The first almost 50% of the book takes places in 24 hours. And the entire storyline is over the course of about a week. This made everything feel very slow to me. The non-romance storyline ended up being lost by the last couple chapters. We basically start with one plot about the Banna and their enemies then completely loose that around 65% when the plot becomes about Fallows “mission”. The author ends the book saying we will continue the Banna’s issues in the next book but it just felt really abrupt to me and odd. The ending of this book honestly seemed like it came 50 pages too soon. There really was no challenge throughout the book, everything was to easy.

Despite not really liking the writing or storyline of this book I did absolutely love the MMCs!!! Fallow was snarky and hilarious. Such a great character and one I wish we got a deeper dive into and a more gradual development of with Colm. I adored Colm too! He was like a panting dog for Fallow, in the best way 😂 a good, steady and respectful presence. But again, his character felt completely surface level to me.

I was also pleasantly surprised and shocked by the Cora Rose character cameos!! The way I gasped was unreal!! It’s funny because the entire book I was like why does the name Ellery sound so familiar. I kept going back to reviews of book 1 in the series to see if they were a character in that one because it had been a while but it was bothering me so much until we got the little Bane hint at the end! That was truly such a fun addition to this story, even if it did feel a bit random to the plot.

Overall, I didn’t love how this book played out and compared to book one of the series it unfortunately didn’t even come close, but there were things I really loved and I will definitely give the next one a shot.

I don’t even know where to start with this book??? 😩🔥 It got under my skin in the BEST way, and honestly… it started off with a bang and never let me recover.

Colm??? Oh my word. This man is NOT your average mafia boss, and I was not ready 😭 He’s somehow this emotionally intelligent, self-aware king while still being able to switch into full-on violence when needed??? The duality is actually insane. He’s got that soft, cinnamon roll energy, but you can literally feel the pressure of leading the Banna weighing on him. I loved how he’s constantly battling between who he is and who he thinks he has to be 🥺

And then there’s Fallow… chaotic, unhinged, feral little gremlin energy 😌🫣 But also??? So much more??? He starts off as such a mystery, and I was OBSESSED with peeling back his layers. He’s bratty with a capital B, completely unpredictable, a little murdery (okay, a lot 😅), but underneath all of that… he’s vulnerable in a way that just hits you right in the chest.

These two though 😭🔥 Their banter??? Unmatched. I was actually laughing out loud like a crazy person. They’re constantly at each other’s throats, but in that way where you just KNOW it’s going to end in something very heated 👀 The chemistry??? Insane. The tension??? Unbearable in the best way.

Also, can we talk about how FUNNY this book is??? Like, genuinely funny. I was not expecting to be giggling one second, emotionally wrecked the next, and then completely feral over the spice right after 🫠🔥

And when those spicy scenes hit… OH HOLY HELL 😮‍💨

What I loved most, though, is how their relationship builds. It’s chaotic and weird and a little unhinged, but also??? Somehow soft and respectful and just… right. They make sense in a way I didn’t expect, but fully believed.

Also, that crossover moment from His Reaper by Cora Rose??? 😍 Had me smiling like an idiot!!!

This felt WAY too short for these two because I am NOT done with them 😭 I have questions, I need answers, and I need the next book immediately.

Erin Russell really said emotional damage + chaos + humour + spice, and I ate it ALL up 🖤

After meeting Colm in Savage, I just knew he wouldn't be your average mafia man and boy was I right.

Colm has some serious cinnamon roll energy. Now don't get me wrong, he gets down on the violence when needed but this man is in tune with his emotions. He is a secret softie and is at war with himself over his leadership within the Banna and who he is as a person.

Fallow is a mystery and one I loved to unravel. He is so intriguing and as the story went on we got to learn more about him and who he really was as a person. He's a major brat with a capital B but underneath that brattiness and his completely unhinged ways, he is actually extremely vulnerable. He just doesn't cope in the best ways 🫣

These two had this banter that had me cracking up at times. They had this insane chemistry and were always at each others throats that ended with them settling it in the hottest way possible.

Gahhhh that crossover moment and my baby Bane, had me smiling so hard, I loved it 😍

I have so many questions and thoughts and I can not wait for the next book in the series, hopefully will get some answers.

3.25 ⭐️ The Missouri Irish mafia gets paid a visit by a nonbinary(ish) psychopath, who seduces their newly appointed leader into going on a road trip.

Despite two strong main characters, this book was honestly a mess. It’s speed run of lust to love and a mafia plot that barely gets introduced before the book simply ends. Other than two characters going from loners to lovers in a week, there’s no development toward any kind of story here.

At the beginning, Fallow arrives in Colm’s territory and rescues him from a sticky situation, only to create a sticky situation of his own. The Banna are then feuding harder with the Aryans. Colm struggles to maintain his new authority. But then Fallow decides to go to California to hunt down a trafficking ring, and Colm decides to go, too. They drive, they get hunted by the Aryans, they have sex in hotels. The get to San Francisco, find Fallow’s sister, confirm the trafficking ring, and then head home having decided, by then, to commit to each other forever.

Does this even qualify as a novel? It felt like 2/3 of one. Maybe half.

Also, why does he call himself “Fallow”? I kept waiting for it to click so I could understand the kind of dumb name intended to be intimidating, but it never did.

I didn't think I could dislike a book by them but, alas, I do. In the first 80 pages we have THREE sex scenes. And when they're not having sex they're thinking about their dicks or worrying about outed to their mafia himbos. Seriously. It feels like absolutely nothing happens. Then we get to the roadtrip and it continues.

I swear to god there's six full sex scenes in 233 pages. And then the resolution to Fallow's problem is basically not a resolution at all. Neither is Colm's. The only possible highlight to this, though it's never explicitly stated, is that Fallow may be aromantic like. For real.

I was excited for Colm because I liked him in Sav's story, but it was a disappointment, and I just didn't really like Fallow. They wanted their own rules followed but couldn't respect their siblings pronouns? Yeah, nope.

I'm giving this 3 stars because I like Erin's writing style but ngl, this is more like a 1.5 - 2 for me. There's hardly any plot, and what plot there is is rushed and the characters are uninteresting. I look forward to Lucky's book, but after the last two disappointments, my expectations aren't high.

Colm and Fallow kept me entertained from beginning to end, from their meeting to the final pages. I loved that this still felt distinctly like part of the Banna world, but the road trip elements made it feel brand new in many ways. Colm is stepping up and trying to keep everyone in line with Savage gone, and Fallow is an unknown quantity. He took me the most by surprise. Both narrators did an exceptional job bringing these characters to life. Colm knew ‘who’ he was and who he was allowed to be, especially given the men who had walked before him. But Fallow probably changed the most because wasn’t expecting to open his heart and have feelings for another person in his life. This was portrayed in a way that came across so realistically through voice, and it was felt even more strongly than through just reading it alone.

Dark, Twisted, and Surprisingly Emotional

Colm has become the leader of the local Banna branch, but despite the power, he’s never truly fit in with the violence and ruthlessness around him. His empathy and moral compass leave him feeling like an outsider in a world built on brutality. Then there’s Fallow—a chaotic, dangerous serial killer driven by obsession and a search for someone he lost. When Fallow drags Colm into his mission, their connection quickly becomes as intense as it is dangerous.

I enjoyed the insta-connection between these two and how they balanced each other.

I have loved every single Erin Russell book, and the Possum Hollow series has been exceptional. This spin off into the world of the Banna is just as good.
Fallow is written so well I just wanted to know him. And Colm, was perfect. The criminal underworld over riding his true self, which he was more than content with until he meets Fallow.
From the very second they meet over a slew of dead bodies, their desire is too strong to resist. Fallow starts to drop his rules for Colm, and a little road trip away makes Colm realise what he really wants

This was good

3.5 from me

Honestly this was good and this author never disappoints.

The chemistry was palpable and I loved it.

I think there was an issue with pacing as half the book took place in what felt like one day and the plot was lacking too, the whole story line about Ellery fell a little flat for my liking.

However, the intense combat scenes were written well and I would definitely recommend for those new to dark romance or who don't want a super toxic couple.

My Review:
Fallow and Colm meet by chance and Fallow saves him. Fallow is on a mission of his own, but when they meet there is an undeniable connection. I liked them they both came from a hard world so they had aspects that they could in each other. I thought the book was pretty good and kept my attention, and I enjoyed these two as a couple. When I got a glimpse of Fallow in His Reaper by Cora Rose I knew I was gonna love Fallow. I was not disappointed! This book was such a fun time! Fallow is a great chaotic, feral gremlin! I loved him and Colm together. The way despite Colm wanted to fight the attraction to Fallow but would just melt for him was everything. Colm becoming a safe space for Fallow. The road trip. Everything in this book just flowed and worked so well. Cannot wait to see what's next!!

Fallow’s humour is such a damn vibe hahahah, I legit couldn’t stop giggling like an idiot at some of his lines and inner monologue. Colm, I loved him in Savage and even more so in his book, Fallow is right in saying he is the most emotionally intelligent mafia man ever hahahaha

This was pretty okay. It was mostly sex, which I’m not complaining about, plot was much lighter than the first book in the series. I did like the two main characters and cared enough to stick around and read the whole thing. The addition of the random other mafia guys at the end was odd and it had more of a HFN ending than a true HEA.

Loved it! Big fan! Fallow is absolute nutso and very free and I loved that he was gender fluid. I loved seeing how much Colm was struggling with how much he liked Fallow and how he was falling. Oh to be a fry in the backseat of that car while they went on their road trip.

Also super fun seeing the Bane part of the story!

Colm and Fallow are almost opposites in every way, which is always a fun pairing to read about. The grumpy x cinnamon roll, golden retriever x black cat type of energy. Colm's calmness is such a balm to Fallow's unhinged bratty energy, and I loved reading their relationship develop.

I did enjoy this book, I laughed all the way through, there banter was hilarious from the both of Calm & Farrow. Their chemistry was also off the charts.

This was such a quick easy ready and I can’t wait for the next instalment in the series.
