When the Gates Closed

Rate this book
What if the freedom you fought for... started to feel like another kind of cage?

All Vineeth wants is space. A hostel room. A college life of his own – unmeasured by duty, silence, or Appa's careful plans.

At first, everything clicks.

Divya is brilliant, quiet, and impossibly composed. Arun, all heart, barrels in with jokes and conviction.

Together, the three of them build something tender and unforgettable – until the rules they're trying to escape begin to close in.

Because not all gates are physical. And some open too late.

When the Gates Closed is a nostalgic, emotionally layered story of friendship, first love, parental control, grief, and the quiet courage it takes to step beyond the lives others choose for you.

When the Gates Closed follows Vineeth as he waits at the Chennai airport, a quiet moment that opens into a reflective journey through his past. The storyline unfolds through his memories of hostel life, friendships, authority, and his first experiences of love and life away from home. Rather than relying on dramatic twists, the plot develops through emotional recall, showing how seemingly ordinary moments shape Vineeth. The characters leave a lingering impact and you find yourself routing and caring for them . The story ultimately becomes less about a single event and more about how the past lingers and quietly defines the present.

The writing is subtle allowing the narrative to flow naturally . The author’s simple but expressive language suits the reflective tone of the book and the descriptions are careful to evoke feelings without overwhelming the reader with unnecessary details . What I loved especially is the no non-sense writing style and prose, which lets the themes of memory, youth, and growth emerge with calm yet profound strength.

To me this book felt like walking down memory lane - personal and relatable . It felt nostalgic for several reasons . Every time there was a mention of a place or a song I knew, memories come flooding and for this reason, the book will always be very close to my heart. I am so glad that I got an opportunity to read this book written by someone from back home.

A fun and easy read about the life in the late teenage years of a very normal, relatable guy. The metaphors and euphemisms worked greatly. The way the tension in a room is written is very beautiful in many places. A solid book, felt moved at the end.
