"This is an emergency! A fucking zombie apocalypse is an emergency!" Mike replied.

If you like dry, sarcastic humor with a side helping of zombies and sex as an aperitif, then Zombies From the Deep is your main course. I liked this book a lot, and found myself giggling often (and I don't really giggle) at the antics of Mike and Sara, and their newly found friends Jim and Theresa, as they try to navigate around the zombie apocalypse. Mike is a man much in need of a vacation, but much to his dismay, there's a zombie infestation at the beach hotel where he and his wife just checked in. To add to the chaos, his wife Sara picks up a business man who tries to hijack her car, and befriending him, he leads them to his rich house and his hedonistic, nympho of a wife, Theresa.

“There’s a hot tub,” Teresa offered. “If the world is about to end, wouldn’t you like to relax for a while first?”

Theresa's a hoot, and probably represents a lot of repressed female sexuality. She's certainly open with her favors. The cast of side characters here are worthy of a lot of fun: the chiropractor who's also Theresa's sex toy, the private school full of primary aged zombies, the psychopathic murderer/hiker/doctor, the detective at the end. This is a fun book, and recommended for zombie good times.

"Mike, we need a plan,” Jim said.
“I have a plan,” Mike said, punching the police zombie in the stomach. “I’m going to kill them all.”
“And when more come?” Jim asked.
“I’ll kill them too.” Mike smashed his bat down against the policeman’s head, knocking his helmet off.
“Mike, that’s the definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results!”
"No, it's not," Mike said, bashing the zombie’s exposed head with his bat. Blood flew over his shoulder. He looked like a grotesque, murderous savant. “It’s practice.”

There are two kinds of zombie story: the Allegorical Tale What Makes You Think, and the Ridiculous Freshman Bloodbath (or "Brain Candy" if you will). This is the latter.

I'm a fan of both kinds.

The writing in this is not what I usually go for, prose-wise. It's very simple, a little repetitive, it lacks rhythm where I prefer lyrical novels...but the story itself is genuinely funny and charming even when heads are literally being bashed.

Comparing this book to Shaun of the Dead is spot on, to be honest. Think Shaun of the Dead but with a married couple and that is this book. If that's not enough to recommend it, fine, I'll write out the rest of the review.

Sara and Mike are vacationing at the beach when the end comes. It starts with the power being out and progresses quickly to Mike watching a zombie at the front desk chow down on a fellow patron. Luckily, Mike is blessed with nerves of steel (and a sense of humor!), and he bashes his way back to safety where his wife is still sleeping. Despite him coming in covered in blood, Sara is slow to take things seriously.

"I thought you liked my outfit!" Sara exclaimed.

"I do, but zombies...can you even run in those shoes?"

"I didn't bring anything practical. My flip flops give me blisters. These are the only other shoes I bought. I packed for the beach not the end of the world..."

This is why I always bring running shoes. Everywhere.

Once Sara sees the problem though, she is a total badass, big clompy wedges and all.

"Do you think you could hold her under a wheel while I back up?"

"That might work," Mike said, nodding.

And I could seriously fill pages and pages with my favorite bickering-bantering lines between them.

The plot moves quickly and you never know exactly who's going to die. It ends on a cliff hanger, which I like but if it's not your cup of tea definitely wait for the next book to come out before you start this one. I look forward to part two!

Good Twist!

I wasn’t prepared for all the sex going on and I thought this was about the zombie apocalypse…and it was kind of… so just a warning There are relationship and lots of sex lol. But the story is pretty good putting that aside. I kinda saw the end coming but it was still left open enough for me to wonder. It was refreshingly different for me!

3 1/2 stars, rounding up to 4. This book was a little light on the zombie action, but made up for it because it was pretty funny

Where do I start with this book?

To be honest, I nearly didn’t make it to the end. It started off quite well but then quickly descended into something ridiculous which had me laughing at its absurdity - the nymphomaniac? Don’t even go there!! However, I have been “told off” for reviewing a book I have not finished before so I persevered. I must admit to heaving a sigh of relief when I had finished and thought it was a pile of rubbish and I was going to write a review straight away but I didn’t have time, so have left it a couple of days and I am glad I did because I have had time to digest and reflect on what I have read and have changed my mind.

I think this is a cleverly written book which appears one thing at the start but becomes something completely different by the end and all the bits that seemed preposterous suddenly made sense. I can’t say too much as I don’t want to give the game away but I will say that this book is not as it seems so I advise anyone who reads it to keep going to the end and then let it sink in for a while.

Thank you to the publisher, Hocus Pocus Publishing Inc and Netgalley for providing me with a copy in return for an honest and unbiased review.

A funny approach to the Zombie genre! Mike and Sara are on vacation when suddenly they see themselves stuck right in the middle of a Walking Dead Apocalypse... They rescue Jim (a rich guy who has been bitten) and his wife Teresa (a nymphomaniac who only thinks in... you know what!) and together they will try to survive the Zombie outbreak.

A weird book that mixes horror (lots of gore) with silly humor and erotica (attention: explicit sex scenes) and ends with an unexpected twist... A very fun read!

When Mike and Sara meet Jim and Teresa in the middle of the zombie apocalypse, the four must learn to work together to survive. But is everything as it seems?

This book went everywhere except where i expected it to head. The ending was a shock and made a ton of sense once I understood it. I wasn't sure how I felt about this book until I reached the end and got to see the insanity and brilliance in the story as a whole. Fascinating read for sure!

Mike and Sara Jones were on vacation at the beach when the zombie apocalypse started. Mike woke up to the air conditioning (and ultimately the power) being off. He went down to the lobby to find out what was going on when he encountered his first zombie. The first 30% of the book has some pretty funny moments that really do give off a Shawn of the Dead vibe.

Things start to go in a different direction once they run into another married couple, Jim and Theresa. Theresa seems to have a problem being faithful and is a nymphomaniac. Cue the bad porno music. I'll admit at this point I almost quit reading. Things just got silly quickly. There were scenes that didn't make sense. Dialogue that seemed choppy.

But I persisted and I'm glad I did. I can't say anything about the ending just that its very different from any other zombie book I've read. And it makes all the parts I didn't like make sense. It's twisted and disturbing which I think is what the author was going for.

I received this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Going in, I really wasn't expecting much. Perhaps a silly, fun, gorefest. What I got was a mess and pretty irritating. There were a few amusing touches (ie hand sanitizer after encountering a zombie), but it was weighed down by numerous ridiculous subplots. The characterization of women are especially lacking, and let's not even talk about the ending.

Skip this one even if you typically like zombie fiction.

I'm not gonna even make an effort to write a review. The writing style is just not at all to my liking. The worst part is the constant "he said, she said" after almost every sentence.
