I’m demon slayer royalty desperate for my first kill in years. He’s the demon I’m hunting through Manhattan… and the forbidden temptation who proves I’m spectacularly bad at my job.
I’m a terrible demon slayer–I need a kill, or else my legendary slayer family might finally decide I’m not worthy of the name.
So when I catch one feeding in a dark alley, I attack. But something is… wrong.
He escapes. (Certainly not because I let him.)
So I hunt him. Jonah.
Except Jonah isn’t… behaving like a demon. He protects people who can never know what he is and somehow makes me feel safe. Worse, the truth about what he was taking from that human in the alley–and the impossible magic he awakens in me–shatters everything slayers have believed about demons for centuries.
I should kill him anyway.
Instead, I save his life… And end up in his bed.
So, the hunt is going great.
Now I’m hiding Jonah from the people who raised me to kill him. But when something far more dangerous begins hunting the people he’d die to protect, neither of us can stop it alone.
I was trained to put a blade through Jonah’s heart. Instead, I’m going to give him mine.
Eat, Slay, Love is a fast-paced, insta-love and insta-lust paranormal novella, the spooky season, Filipino American Heritage Month, or any time you have a craving for imported cheese or horns as erogenous zones.
I might have liked it better had it been a 60 page short story or a 300 page full novel. The progression of the plot felt way too fast in some aspects, and like we had nothing to do for a bit in others
Demon slayer Mayari is trying to get in a kill for the first time in YEARS, and let me tell you… it’s tough business when you come from a family full of slayers who make killing demons look like a freaking piece of cake. 😂
She’s been hunting one specific demon for a long time, and just when she finally catches him, she realizes he’s a lot more than meets the horns. 👀
Enter Jonah.
As Mayari gets to know him, the sparks start flying pretty damn quickly, and let’s just say… the spice be spicin’. 🌶️😂
Jonah isn’t really about that demon life anymore. He’s changed, and he’s figured out how to sustain himself without draining people dry or, you know, murdering them. Mayari starts to see that maybe her family’s way of doing things isn’t the only way, and honestly, she wasn’t exactly crushing it as a slayer to begin with. 😂
And her family?! They had me absolutely cackling. This turned into the perfect little found-family story when, surprisingly, they start welcoming Jonah into the fold after realizing maybe their way of doing things isn’t necessarily the right way.
But, of course, they can’t just live happily ever after. They have an evil to fight, and they’re going to have to work together to protect everything they’ve found, and everyone they’ve come to love.
Demons, demon slayers, found family, romance, spice, and a whole lot of “well… this is not how I expected this to go.” 😂
This was such a great novella. Ana has delivered an action-packed story in just 173 pages. I love all the characters tbh . A demon and Slayer paranormal romance is best kind of book to pick during autumn and highly recommend this one. This book has tropes like - insta love, a cat who loves our mmc more than fmc , found family aspect , badass fmc (slayer ) and MMC (demon) who will do anything to protect you (our fmc ) ,then this is the book for you !!
Honestly, I would have loved for this to have been a full length novel because there’s so much world building and characters that could have fleshed it out.
Anyway, was still a fun time though!
𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧: - demon x slayer - sworn enemies - Halloween in NYC - horns as erogenous zones
Mayari was a demon slayer who needed to break the ice after a long period without a kill, to prove that she was still worthy of her legendary family legacy of slayers. She didn't expect to find a demon who ignited something different in her and who made her powers react in a unique way while being in his presence. Jonah felt different than other demons, being protective of people, not like the other ones, who only harmed them. In this whole hunting, Mayari will find herself in the situation of helping Jonah, who needed all the support to protect the people he cared about from a way bigger evil. But, along the way, things shifted and that initial connection became even more powerful, leading to something unexpected: ending in bed with the enemy. Will they be able to enjoy that new found love when the evil was lurking around and when they were having something forbidden when it came to her family of slayes?
When I've started this book I truly haven't expected to be crying while reading it😅. But, all the events that have happened throughout a couple of chapters from this story have completely melted my heart and made it impossible for me to contain my tears. Mayari and Jonah had such a vibrant connection, which kept on growing with each second they spent together. It was unexpected, but I liked how right it felt, even if they were completely opposite and from different worlds. It was emotional to see how protective of one another they were and how stubborn they were when it came to keeping each other safe. I was completely mesmerized by all the events that have happened in this story and it was interesting to find out more about their past, one which made me see them in a new light. The fight against the evil was suuuper intense and really tough, but that proved me how strong that bound they shared was and how they would literally give their lives to protect each other. It was SIMPLY EVERYTHING!!🥹
I haven't read this type of books so far, only binging a couple of TV seris which had a similar theme, but I was surprised in the best way possible by this one, being captivated by this story even from the first page until the very last one. I loooved it so, so much!🥹 I have to thank Ana and Sophia Travers for accepting me for this e-ARC.🩵 I've enjoyed so much reading their novellas.
✨Tropes ▫️Enemies To Lovers ▫️Opposites Attract ▫️Romantasy ▫️Demon x Slayer ▫️Touch Her & Die ▫️ Protective MMC
I’m highly convinced the male love interest is Remy because cheese was mentioned thirty one times and he’s a good cook… hmm I see the clues .
This was such a good introduction back into spooky season. I’ve missed halloween! I had the most fun reading this with Rachel and cannot WAIT to read Sophia’s work next .
I really enjoyed the characters in this story. Personally I felt the magic/world building was very extravagant for a novella . It wasn’t bad but to me it would’ve worked better in a full sized novel . We spend most of our pages learning about why and how they fight demons and our romance is kind of sidelined at time .
Now I have zero problems with the romance being side plot but for a novella so small it just didn’t mesh well for me.
I liked the ending :)

Mayari is an elite demon slayer who due to an incident ten years ago hasn’t added a notch to her belt. When she crosses paths with a gorgeous demon who unexpectedly left his prey alive but altered, she tries to take him out but can’t bring herself to do it. Returning to the scene of what she’s been conditioned to think of as cowardice, she encounters a much more dangerous demon and nearly expires before vanquishing him. Her demon from the previous night not only helps her, thus saving her life, but he discloses information to her that throws into question everything she’s ever been taught about demons and her family’s legacy as slayers.
Demon Jonah has been gone for the courageous and misguided demon slayer Mayari since she hesitated when trying to end his existence. When she’s nearly dead after fighting a purely evil demon, his protective instincts kick in. An encounter with her family, however, brings up a devastating loss in Jonah’s past, but there’s no time for reflection as a Big Bad is terrorizing the vulnerable denizens of the soup kitchen. Will they survive the onslaught only to have Mayari’s family unalive Jonah? How can these two have a future together when they’ve always had opposite agendas?
This was a sizzling paranormal romance from the always wonderful Ana Kirk Shaw, with plenty of action/adventure as well. I was fortunate to have received an advance reader copy from the author and bookfunnel, and I’m sharing my honest review.
You need a novella that benefits you and others, and this is perfect!
Let me start by saying that the proceeds from this novella (and its bestie novella, Fangbanger) are going towards the Food Bank for NYC and the Chicago Abortion Fund. You can read romance and help charities- a win-win-win!
But you will get an amazing read out of this one! The perfect way to get you into the Fall-O-Ween mood. You can honestly read this novella any time during the year. It really is a good read!
What is this about? A Demon slayer and a hot Demon, but they fall for each other. But they are opposites? But that's part of what makes it hot! They are sworn enemies, and she may have tried to off him (in multiple ways), but hey, who's counting?
Once they know about each other, well, let's just say no one can hurt what he deems is his. Unless they want to be slayed themselves. Hot, I know! But this spicy novella gets hotter. With his horns and, well, the other kind of horn. Just overall amazing!
This novella had chemistry, spice, a great story, and I have no notes. Now, you may be thinking that a novella would be rushed and you don't like novellas. I know the feeling, and this one isn't like that at all. Literally the perfect amount of everything! Not rushed, not dragged out, perfect.
I highly recommend you pick this one up and read it asap! You won't be sorry, just that you didn't read it sooner.
Spice Rating: ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥.5
❤️ Demon x Slayer ❤️ Things aren’t what they seem ❤️ Halloween in NYC ❤️ Horns as erogenous zones ❤️ Sworn Enemies ❤️ Touch her and die
Eat, Slay, Love was such a fun time. A demon and demon slayer forced together at the hands of fate in the middle of Manhattan?? What's not to like! I really enjoyed both of these main characters and how they each came to life in the small amount of time we spent with them. The lore of having demon slayer families in different boroughs of New York was brilliant. And the spice in this is fantastic! This is definitely VERY sexy, so go into this expecting high physical intimacy levels alongside high stakes (as in, ‘the fate of mortals everywhere’ level stakes). At times the pacing of this felt a touch odd— sometimes rushed, sometimes a little too slow. I think the book itself is at a bit of an awkward length where it doesn't exactly read as a novella, but it's definitely not a full length novel either. Overall I think this is really fun for the season, even if it wasn't 100% my cup of tea! Another Halloween novella ticked off the list. Looking forward to reading the second book in this duology as a vampire lover! 3.5 stars ⭐️
Thank you Ana Kirk Shaw for this eARC in exchange for my honest opinions!!
What happens when you combine the worst demon slayer with a demon who refuses to slay!? Two hornballs just trying to survive October in New York City!
Mayari is terrible at demon slaying and she meets and quickly falls for Jonah, a half demon that feeds people instead of feeding on them. I really enjoyed the world building and getting to know the different families that made up the city and their unique powers.
My only complaint is that I wish this was longer and I’m hopeful for more stories because Mayari has like four brothers? Lots of potential!
Ana has done it again! This was such a good read, the perfect mixture of humour, romance and dramaaaa. And honestly, I relate to Mayari’s love of cheese. We’d be friends for sure 😂
Absolutely one to add to your TBR this Halloween if you fancy a bit of spooky fun! 😏🎃
thank you to ana kirk shaw for the advanced copy of eat, slay, love!
"don't autumn my summer" has never applied more. literally, it's basically halloween now.
can i just say, BIG fan of how much cheese was mentioned in this book. really spoke to me as a wisconsinite.
i really loved the romance in this, my only complaint (and maybe this is just a me thing based on what i look for in novellas) was that the world building and lore was very deep for a novella. typically when i read a romance novella, i am looking for the fastest vehicle of romance possible, much in the same way fries are a vehicle for ranch.
if this were a full length book where the romance could've been further developed, i would've enjoyed it even more! just didn't totally match what i was looking for which is ok.
Jonah & Mayari. I realllllly enjoyed this short novella by AKS. Ana never fails to deliver on a story. Jonah being a demon with purpose and Mayari being a slayer with a conscious. This delicious story is just in time for Halloween. So buckle in because it’s a ride.
I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.
This book had me crying and laughing! It was honestly the sweetest most touching story about a demon and a demon slayer, with some super hot 🌶️ times and a lot of fun. I’m absolutely obsessed with both Mayari and Jonah, and I want a Jonah for myself!!!
Jonah is the sweetest demon with a heart of gold and a tragic past, and Mayari the demon slayer is a “terrible” slayer, but partially because she can tell when demons aren’t all bad. They both are super horny despite Jonah being the only one with actual horns (and claws too, is that hot?) and find each other irresistible despite being natural enemies 🥹. Highly recommend!!!
Read for: 🧀 Enemies to lovers 🧀 Filipino rep 🧀 Demon x Slayer 🧀 Paranormal romance 🧀 Action romance 🧀 Discount cheese enthusiast 🧀 He takes care of her 🧀 🐓 warming 🧀 Batibat the demon cat
Okay this was quick but so good! Fast paced, with a bit of instalust and a sprinkle of maybe-bonded(?) and a hooking plot.
Both Mayari and Jonah were little dummies that couldn’t stay away from each other, ancient rivalry and attempted murder included. Their connection was spicy and quick, still somehow they fit perfectly and I truly believe in their happily ever after.
I would have loved to read from Jonah’s pov, even just a chapter would have made me happy but it’s okay, Mayari was cool.
This was a super fun surprise to drop in my inbox and with the most beautiful cover. Ana, thank you for the early copy!
I WAS SO READY FOR THIS TO OFFICIALLY OPEN SPOOKY SEASON FOR ME. 😭👻
Unfortunately… the hype was better than the actual book.
And honestly, my biggest issue with Eat Slay Love is simply that it was WAY too freaking short for everything Ana was trying to do. This desperately needed to be a full-length novel—or at least another 200-ish pages—because there were SO many ideas crammed into such a tiny amount of space that none of them really got the chance to shine.
Some authors can somehow give you world-building, character development, lore, romance, emotional attachment, AND a satisfying plot in 50 pages.
Ana Kirk Shaw is not one of those authors.
AND I DON’T MEAN THAT AS AN INSULT because I genuinely think she’s a great author!! But novellas—at least this kind of novella with actual world-building, supernatural lore, backstory, AND romance—might just not be her strongest format.
Because the idea??? I WAS THERE.
The execution??? Baby, where is the rest of it???
There was so much background and world-building that needed to be established, but there simply wasn’t enough room to actually explore any of it. Some things were just straight-up told to us, while other things barely even got THAT much explanation. Then you’re also trying to squeeze an entire romance into the scraps of page space left over and… yeah. 😭
Nothing had time to breathe.
I didn’t really get attached to the world. I didn’t really get attached to the romance. I barely got to know the characters.
I DID really like Jonah, though.
Wish I could say I actually got to fucking meet him. 💀
AND EVEN THE SPICE WASN’T REALLY SPICING???
Like ma’am. If you’re going to give me scraps of the plot, scraps of the lore, scraps of the romance, and scraps of the character development, AT LEAST FEED ME THE SMUT. I AM STARVING OVER HERE.
I also read an ARC, so this very well might have been corrected in the finished copy, but the timeline confused the absolute hell out of me. Everything happens within roughly 84 hours… except they keep talking about a week passing? And then TWO weeks??? Sir, WHERE DID THOSE DAYS COME FROM???
Jonah is also apparently 84.
Except when he is 87.
My demonic king is aging at an ALARMING rate. 😭
So yeah, I definitely think the ARC needed another proofread or two because between the ages and the timeline, I was starting to question my own ability to perceive time.
Overall, though, this was still a fun-ish, cute little demonic read! 👹🖤 I had a good enough time with it, and I think it works as a super quick spooky-season palate cleanser. I just REALLY wish Ana had been given—or had given herself—the space to turn this concept into an actual full-length novel because there was genuinely something here.
I was able to read this book ahead of its release date thanks to the author Anna Kirk Shaw.
I would recommend this book to someone looking for a rom-com paranormal romance that also has action and suspense.
Spice level: 2
I was so happy to find out Anna Kirk Shaw was dipping her toe into paranormal romance with a novella. Already being a fan of hers, I was excited to read her in this genre. The book did not disappoint. It was a great mix of romcom and action with the AKS touch.
I really liked Mayari (FMC). She wasn’t the best slayer in her family but she found a way to make it work. She also wouldn’t go along with the “that's how it's always been” mentality of her demon hunting community. Jonah (MMC) was a good twist on a demon. Having him be a “good demon” that felt an obligation to protect the same people that his own kind come after was new. Both characters have a good background story that plays a role in who they are in the present and it ties in with the plot.
AKS always works in some cultural rep into her stories and I was curious to see how she would work it into this story. Having the demon hunter families split into boroughs and giving each a cultural background was such a seamless way to work it in. Then we also see hints of Mayari’s Filipino culture in her parents home. Plus, mentions of food. Which i always love since so much of culture and heritage is in food.
The romance plot between Mayari and Jonah had enemies to lovers all over it. She literally tried to kill him twice! I like that there isn’t a fated mate trope between them, rather they choose each other. Despite their kinds being natural enemies. Was I expecting the horn play? No. Did I love it? Yes. The spice otherwise isn’t too crazy. Jonah does have a dirty mouth and is more dominant in the bedroom. Mayari is a brat. Bonus: I loved the little Casper Easter egg.
There is a good amount of action between Mayari and Jonah fighting each other and then the fights with the other demon. There is also some suspense. I really liked the message at the core of the story. Not judging a whole population based on a few. Not accepting “that's how it's always been”, that changing people's beliefs that are rooted in years of bigotry cannot happen overnight but you have to keep pushing for the change. That sometimes it takes the new generation to fix what the elders have gotten wrong for so long. Standing by your choice even when it goes against your family's values because you know they are wrong and their values hurt the innocent.
Overall, I really enjoyed the story, loved the message and hope AKS continues down the road of paranormal or monster romance in the future.
Apparently all I needed for spooky season was a demon slayer who is terrible at slaying, a demon who is secretly the sweetest good boy alive, attempted murder, horny horns, and an alarming amount of cheese. 👹🗡️🧀
Eat, Slay, Love was SUCH a fun, fast little paranormal romance. Mayari and Jonah are supposed to be mortal enemies, which Mayari takes pretty seriously considering she tries to kill him TWICE, but unfortunately for her, Jonah is hot, has horns, and is annoyingly difficult to actually hate.
I loved that both of them are kind of terrible at the roles they’re supposed to play. Mayari is an awkward demon slayer attempting to come up with badass catchphrases while also realizing that maybe not every demon deserves to be murdered. Meanwhile, Jonah is basically the world’s least convincing villain with a tragic past, a heart of gold, and an obsession with protecting his people. Give me a villain who is secretly a good boy and I am DONE FOR.
Their banter was so much fun, their chemistry was immediate, and the whole thing moves at approximately Fast & Furious speed from page one. We’ve got insta-lust, enemies to lovers, found family, demon-slaying chaos, Halloween in NYC, and, most importantly, HORNS AS EROGENOUS ZONES. 🤭
And yes, there is spice. And yes, there was a certain getting-to-know-you scene that had my FULL attention. 👀
I also really loved the found family aspect and watching Mayari and Jonah figure out who they actually are outside of everything they’ve been told they’re supposed to be. For such a quick, funny read, there were some surprisingly sweet and emotional moments tucked between all the demon chaos.
My only selfish complaint is that I would have LOVED Jonah’s POV because I desperately needed to know what was happening inside that horny little demon brain.
If you want something quick, spicy, action-packed, a little ridiculous, and extremely fun for spooky season, add this one to your Halloween TBR immediately. 🎃🔪👹
This is a novella, where the he FMC is so related dude. This was such a cute, hilarious, cozy & wholesome read. I loved it.
Our FMC comes from a family of demon slayer royalty. But this specific "demon Slayer" clears her throat, while bumbling over her words trying to tell demon buddy guy his days & nights are done, foreverrrr. But she doesn't just stop there, by mucking up her words... Lmao when she tries to throw a dagger at hims.. she says “One moment, please,”. YEAHHHH !! She tells A DEMON, whoooo she is gonna try and unalive... "ONE MOMENT PLEASE" ☠️☠️☠️☠️🤌🤌🤌🤌. Annnnnnd dennnn, she starts to fight off and shoo away rats from the bag her danger ka-nife is in... hahahah! I laughed so hard at this hahahaha it was so well executed man hahahaha
Nickname(s): Nightmare, Brat, Baby, Angel.
Favorite quotes:
“I am actively trying not to hurt you,” he says, dodging another half-committed strike. “Which, for the record, is not something most demons bother with, so maybe we could take a moment and unpack that?”
“Lovely to make your acquaintance, Nightmare,” he calls lightly, lifting a hand in a half-wave. “For what it’s worth? I’m happy it was you. You’re not a very efficient slayer. You’re terrible at this.” ---bahahahha *giggles in diabolical*
"By the time I get home, my adrenaline has nowhere to go, which means it reroutes directly into spite. And cheese." Guuurl yes. Hahahah
"I suddenly remember that this demon is probably centuries-old and unacquainted with Gen Z (or is it Y? What letter are we at now?) internet slang."
“It’s like if a dominatrix got lost on the way to a bake sale,” a man half-shouts. “Nah,” someone else chimes in. “Like the Black Widow suddenly switched to non-profit work.” “Gotham’s community service program is wild.”
This paranormal novella was a fun, fast-paced, and spicy read. I liked the concept of the forbidden romance between Mayari and Jonah. Their first meeting was very interesting. It was also kind of funny because Mayari is REALLY bad at being a slayer, and Jonah just eats it up. But what I loved the most is how Mayari and Jonah found acceptance with each other, despite what they were taught about each other's kind.
I'm not a huge fan of reading insta-lust and insta-love romances, but I was able to enjoy this one. The banter between Mayari and Jonah was fun and their chemistry was hot. The minute they cave in, you're rushed into A LOT of spice. It was sweet seeing how they always found a way to each other despite being slayer and demon.
My one pause about this read was I felt like it would’ve benefitted being a full novel instead of a novella. I felt that the were was so much world-building packed into this that it deserves more time to be explained. The concepts of the paranormal in the book was intriguing and I personally would’ve liked more time to understand it.
Bonus points for all the Filipino references and influences in this book. It made my little Filipina heart happy seeing things like baybayin being used to create the paranormal universe of the story. Salamat Ana for representing the Philippines in your books!
I have been a fan of Ana Kirk Shaw's books since her debut and I was so excited to read her foray into paranormal romance. Eat, Slay, Love is a novella, so it is very fast paced. It throws us into the action immediately, with Mayari, a sub-par demon slayer, trying to slay another demon to get her mojo back.
Mayari is from a long line of demon slayers who have been taught that all demons are completely evil, no exceptions. But this latest demon that Mayari has failed to slay upsets her entire world view. Jonah is good. He's not sucking souls out left and right. He's protecting the people that come to his soup kitchen. When the biggest, baddest, truly evil demon in NYC sets his sights on Jonah's territory, Mayari makes the choice to help Jonah protect everyone there. And hate and distrust quickly morph into something decidedly tender between the two.
My one and only complaint about the story is: I wish it were a full length novel! I want so much more of this universe. I loved the characters, the magic system and I'm desperate to know more about a certain, very mysterious, side character at the soup kitchen. If you want a fast burn novella for spooky season, definitely give Eat, Slay, Love a read!
A demon slayer who is terrible at slaying, a demon who is actually… good, Halloween in NYC, imported cheese AND a demon cat? Sold.
Eat Slay Love is a fast-paced, spicy paranormal novella that fully embraces the insta-lust-and-love of it all.
Our FMC is desperate to prove herself with her next demon kill, except when she finally gets her chance, something about this particular demon feels different. Instead of killing him, she saves him. Which raises the question: is she really just that sh!t at being a slayer, or is there a reason she can’t bring herself to kill him?
I really liked how that became one of the core themes of the story. She’s been taught that demon automatically equals evil, but the demon she’s supposed to kill might actually be a better person than some of the people around her. There’s a nice don’t judge someone by what they are message running underneath all the spice, banter and paranormal chaos.
There’s also some intriguing magic behind their connection, and the Halloween-in-New-York setting makes this a perfect little spooky season read.
Mayari needs a kill to uphold her slayer royalty status, so she sets her sights on Jonah. But there’s something different about him… that makes Mayari question her magic and everything she’s been taught about demons. So, instead of killing him, she saves his life (and ends up in his bed—oops?). Now, with an impending hunt on the people Jonah protects, they need to work together, but will they make it with all odds stacked against the sworn enemies?
There was so much packed in the ~150 pages of this novella!!! Because of its format, it is fast-paced, but there was a great balance between the action-packed plot and romance! Mayari had a full character arc, which I think was written SO well. It’s one of my favorite elements of the plot! There’s also filipino rep! The romance doesn’t skimp either with automatic chemistry between Mayari and Jonah. And phew, the spicy scenes!!! 🔥
Thanks to Ana Kirk Shaw for an ARC! 🫶🏻
