This novel is so far away from my usual choice of story, it's a leap out of my comfort zone, yet the blurb on the back really tempted me. I knew that I was in for a challenge, but I was determined that I wanted to read this one. I have always had a keen interest in other cultures and religions, and this story of terrorism, the occult and nationalism opens up a whole new world for me as a reader.

One of the most important elements of Satans & Shaitans is love. This is a love story, it is the story of two young people whose fathers are involved in the occult and whose desire for power in this turbulent country makes them terrorists.

Obinna Udenwe's writing is uncomplicated and simple to follow, the complexities of terror, jihad and culture within Nigeria are gently unfolded, and the reader is guided through these. There were times that I became confused, especially with the names, but his writing is very engaging, and I soon found my way back around the plot.

There is a lot going on in Satans & Shaitans; from murder to conspiracy theory, from love affair to undercover occult organisations, and whilst the writing flows easily, the plot is huge and the story covers lots of issues.

I am pleased that I read this story, and I feel that I know a little more about Nigeria, and the issues there, the author writes with authority and authenticity.

From the first few pages of this book, I knew it would be different to what I’m used to. I usually read non fiction and can’t get into crime who dunnits. This wasn’t a crime fiction book more than it was a commentary on the complex makings of a corrupt society. The way each relationship intertwined to add a layer of cruelty, evilness, hypocrisy and fear made the brilliance of the book. In the end, the author very cleverly turned the innocent into the criminal in such a way revealing that evil has many faces, and that the source of evil very much depends on the perspective we stand at. In this book I saw more than a story of. Time fiction in Nigeria. It’s the story of global corruption and treason… treason to all those who just wanted to live, and I think no character better exemplifies this than Miss Spencer.

WoW, what a thrill of a ride.
My first Thriller/ mystery read of 2026. To find out this is a debut novel was something else. Interesting take on terrorism and the North/ South divide in Nigeria.

BOOK:SATAN AND SHAITANS BY OBINNA UDENWE.
BOOK REVIEWER:-OKOKO AYEZU TAMARAPREYE.

SYNOPSIS:-
A story built around the philosophical premise that says "if there is a God, men will not suffer and if God is God and good, he would not allow suffering: Satan/suffering is allowed by God who can't be good to allow same." It is a book on terrorism, speaking mainly of the Christian and Islamic Religion and a derailment in 2009AD by followers of the teachings of Jesus Christ and Prophet Muhammad, Peace be upon him , derailing from the ways of the great holy Prophets thus birthing the evil now called terrorism which started in the Middle East and has now spread down Asia, America, Africa and beyond. It is a religious and political story woven around the family of evangelist Chuba Chris and his daughter,Adeline who was kidnapped and who had left the house supposedly with her boyfriend. The reader is exposed to political and business politics as played by the high and mighty even as we see a pregnant Adeline crying of God not answering her prayers to the blessed virgin every night ,allowing her to get pregnant: Adeline questions God for allowing her suffer.
LESSONS LEARNT FROM THE BOOKS READ:-

🦾Starting a religious war in a bid to win an election is a miscalculation as the starters of the war will always be blamed and called bad names while the perceived enemy wins even if he is a weakling as seen in Alhaji Umar's words.

🦾Many terrorists forces think like the men in the story who argued with Alhaji Umar saying that a terrorist war, when it grows international into a n international force with international recognition is formidable.

🦾Islam does not support terrorism rather terrorism destroys the holy religion of Islam as seen in Alhaji Umar Hassan's words to Dr Clark.

🦾Terrorism only consolidates the power of its sponsors as seen in Alhaji Umar's words in the book that terrorism in Nigeria will destroy the holy religion of Islam and only strengthen the Sacred Orders Powers in Nigeria.

🦾That the belief that terrorists should be left to make their choice and that terrorism is not peculiar to onecountry is no good reason not to walk towards putting a stop to it as seen in Alhaji Umar Hassans words from the Qu'ran thus:"And do not kill yourselves.Indeed.Allah is to you ever merciful and whoever does that in aggression and injustice then we will drive him into fire.....".
🦾That the mention of seventy two virgins for a killer and terrorist is not mentioned in the Holy Qu'ran as it is Western Islamophobia.

🦾Participation in politics most times is tough and a near impossibility in these times as non conformants to certain organisational membership and occult are kept aloof or lose their positions as seen of the plot to remove Alhaji Umar Hassan as Director General of the Nigerian Port Authority.
🦾The words about Dr Clark, the rich business man of favours done his business by government when his business/company develops new products, banning importation of competing foreign goods or increasing import duties on them is one that borders on a countries competition policy.

🦾There's the "poor" belief by most persons in corridors of power that to appoint a person, he or she must be one that can be controlled and whose life and family can be threatened.

🦾That puncturing ,invading the belief system of a gullible few was all a terrorist needed as seen of the tall, slim man in front of the mosque(Sheik Muhammad Seko) located inside the Center For Islamic Knowledge as the gullible didn't need incentives.

🦾That terrorism is always sponsored by the powerful as seen of Sheikh Seko whose friends in the South had bought with money to lure the youths in the South into war in the name of Allah but had diverted same.

🦾Money could motivate people to do evil and is the reason for most of the crimes in society today as we see of the man in front of the mosque whose motivation for terrorism though undisclosed was money.

🦾Most of these handy tools in crimes and terrorism are ignorant of what they do as we see the man in front of the mosque didn't reveal his true motivation to his friends in the South or especially his Soldiers.

🦾Reaching a truce for true peace involved keeping to the terms of the truce or could result in violence by a party perceived cheated. It is better not to negotiate than negotiate and not comply as seen in the situation of a payment in the story of the Jams 'atul-mujahideen Jihad terrorists organization to cease fire and later reneging on the truce by shooting everyone which led to a resumption by setting the place ablaze is an example.

🦾The Bible principle of give to Caesar what's Caesar's is seen in Evangelist Chris Chuba's recalling the request by Chief Donald Amechi that he sacrificed his daughter to the Sacred Order of the Universe Forces who had given him fame and riches.

🦾The need of friends of goodwill and good company in times of dispair and not to stay aloof as seen of the Evangelist Chris Chiba situation as staying aloof does more harm than good.

🦾As seen of the end of the men sent to do the will of the Sacred Order and their terrible end via an accident along the Enugu-Abakaliki Express Way, those that are sent to do evil evil to children of God always end badly ,and sometimes even before they carry out their assignment.

🦾To show your feeling is to risk opposing your humanity.
🦾No form of terrorism succeeds without an insider involvement as seen of Chief Donald Amechi, who was a Sacred Lord, and most senior member of the Sacred Order sponsoring terrorism in the country in the story and the other members of the Sacred Order who were 22 out of the 36 state governors in the country as seen in the story.

🦾Terrorists always use a force from within called a mole to invade a system as seen in the sponsorship of terrorism in the story by "brother's from the south".

🦾That the belief that terrorism is doing the will of Allah and his messengers is not true of Islam or being a true Muslim as to wage war uninstigated is never the will of Allah.

APPLICATION OF LESSONS LEARNT FROM THE STORY/BOOK.
On person in corridors of power appointing into positions persons they can control or whose lives and family they can threaten,it points to the ignorance of many on the importance of true development in society and politics.

On God allowing Satan, temptation and suffering, the holy bible and Qu'ran in Ephesians 6:10-12 and Surah 14:22 points the the presence of evil, temptation, suffering and Satan whose schemes we must stand against to remain blameless before ourselves and the accuser of the brethren who accuse them daily even before the living God causing them to doubt Gods goodness.

Whether internationally recognized terrorists organization or international force per se ends up gaining power to rule a country forever is a subject matter left for the mind of the very observant, taking a cue from the Nigerian situation of militancy, religious terrorism,Indigenous People of Biafra,Afenifere,Oduua People Congress amongst others

On favours done the business man by government when his company develops new products and banning foreign goods or increasing import duties on them, I would want to believe this has a nexus with promoting local content and what is known in law as "pioneer status" and tax holiday to a successful applicant by the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) usually for initial 3 years with 2 year possibility of extension but now 5 years due to bottleneck issues and curing same. Most of the firms who complain of such favours ,never apply for same.

On negotiating with terrorists and reneging with return to use of brutal force uninstigated being catastrophic, one can not overemphasis that even in cases of little quarrel in daily life with one another

Imagine liking a woman so much, being so convinced that God sent her to you that you go as far as framing her for murder. You kidnap her, place her beside a dead body, and let her take the fall. That’s how vile the people in this book are. Satan’s and Shaitan’s is an amazing exploration of the evil that can sprout from human beings, regardless of faith; Christian or Muslim. The book makes it clear that people as people are capable of the most heinous acts.

As a Nigerian, reading this was very thrilling for me . Being in 2025 reading a book dated back to 2014 and still feeling like these themes aren’t historical is something I don’t get all the time; The hunger for power, the thirst for control, egotistical and narcissistic leadership, domestic abuse. These are issues we continue to see today. And somehow, woven into all this darkness, there’s a love story that complicates everything.

The entire book is very engaging and unsettling in the best way. I won’t say I couldn’t put it down because work and life stretched out my reading but I was completely invested in the plot. This was an easy 5 out of 5 for me. I loved the storyline and how carefully the themes were explored .
Truly an amazing read.

This was a great story. It was a bit slow and quite choppy to follow. The character development was not up to standard and I felt that before I got to know any of the characters they were dead. There was a lot of characters as well, which wasn't bad but everyone kind of blended into the scene and few characters stood out. As a book speaking about Nigerian underbelly of power, I loved it. A great insight to the forces in Nigeria. The love story was weak though. A detective story about Kwame , coming to Nigeria would of been better. Love to see Nigerian authors doing it!

Just like every time I've read a story based in Nigeria, this time too I was reminded of how alike they are to the Indian culture and lifestyle. This was a proper masala novel, packed with religion, corruption (the two can rarely be far from each other!), romance, tragedy, action....yup, in Bollywood terms, a bit like a Rohit Shetty movie meets a Subhash Ghai movie - not in an entirely bad way. I did enjoy it while reading it but couldn't help but wonder if it was just written with a lot of spice for the non-African reader as many India-based novels also tend to be....a bit unclear on that front. Nevertheless, a good find.
