We survived the invasion and beat the aliens. But they left something behind…

Killing monsters is what I do. Like my father before me, I fight side by side with my twin brother and my squad to protect our people.

Since the invasion, life is dangerous. I know how short it can be, so I live it to the fullest. I work hard on Hunter Squad, I party harder, I love a joke and a good time, and I never get tangled up in relationships. I watched my father’s grief at losing his brother. I almost lost my own twin. I’ll never let myself get in too deep.

Then our squad’s pilot crashes alone in monster-infested mountains.

Tiny, opinionated Colbie who’s the best pilot I know. A fierce redhead who never hesitates to stand up to me.

Everything changes. Every protective instinct I have is in overdrive. I have to find her and bring her home.

I’ll risk it all—monsters, raging rivers, dangerous terrain—but when the two of us are alone and fighting for survival, I realize that what’s most at risk is the one thing I’ve always guarded—my heart.

We're back with the HS crew as they work on making this alien ravaged Earth a little safer for the humans who've survived. This time around we have Marc and Colbie. He's convinced himself that caring for someone is outside his wheelhouse (because the world is a dangerous place and people inevitably get lost) and he pushes any and all inconvenient feelings he might have for Colbie down. She likes the big guy, but she's not willing to be just a notch on Marc's headboard.

Then Colbie's copter is brought down in monster-infested territory and suddenly they're both facing the idea that they might have missed out on something good by not acting on their feelings. Also, Colbie's alone, afraid, and fighting to stay alive long enough for Hunter Squad to find her. Which, you know, is rough.

But find her they do! Then, she and Marc end up separated from the rest of the group and have to seek shelter in the abandoned Blue Mountain base. Which is downright awesome because I LOVE revisiting decaying settings like that. On the downside, the base has its fair share of monsters that have taken up residence in it and Colbie and Marc have their hands full keeping themselves alive.

A little danger, some freaky new alien hybrids, familiar faces, a man who has to confront his fears before he loses the only woman he's ever had feelings for, and a lady who isn't willing to sit back if it means leaving her loved ones unprotected. *thumbs up*

This third book in the Hunter Squad series, after Jameson and North, takes a classic case of jeopardy and mixes it with an equally classic romance trope. Then it stirs the pot – and plot – by adding what appears to be the full reveal of the series’ overall big bad to create a pulse-pounding sci-fi adventure romance with a whole lot of heart at its, well, heart.

Colbie Erickson, the daughter of Hell Squad Hawk pilot Finn Erickson and Hell Squad drone pilot Lia Murphy, has followed in her dad’s footsteps – or perhaps that’s wings – to become the go-to pilot for Hell Squad’s successors, Hunter Squad. So when her quadcopter goes down in dangerous territory during a medical supplies run, Hunter Squad immediately deploys to find her.

Not that the whole squad doesn’t both respect AND care for her, but there’s something about Colbie that’s special to one Hunter Squad member in particular, Marc Jackson. Marc has never been able to stop thinking about Colbie, but he’s also never been able to stop thinking about the grief that his dad, Gabe Jackson, has lived with since the loss of his twin brother during the original Gizzida invasion. Marc keeps all his relationships one-night only and no strings attached because he’s afraid to get close to anyone.

He knows that Colbie deserves better than that. More importantly, so does Colbie.

But when Hunter Squad’s rescue of Colbie results in the discovery of a new Gizzida-Terran hybrid experimental base in the ruins of Hell Squad’s old Blue Mountain Base, the bond they have spent years trying to suppress flares to life. Because now, Colbie’s not just a squadmate he needles and teases and walks away from (to party with someone else), now she’s someone who has saved his life AND had his back in more than one firefight.

His head believes that he can’t risk the loss if something happens to her, but his heart has already taken that ride and isn’t coming back. The only question is whether he can get his head out of his angst enough to tell her how he feels before she walks away.

Or before the next time the monsters come out to play with them all. For keeps.

Escape Rating A-: So, I’m still not all that fond of the covers for this series. However, this third entry really hit a sweet spot for me and I’m very glad of it. I think that now that the ‘big bad’ has reared his ugly head (literally) in this follow up to the author’s Hell Squad series, the whole thing just reached back and grabbed that same set of vibes by the tail – and then set them on fire.

(Yes, I know I mixed my metaphors something fierce, but it worked for me. Just go with it.)

There are three elements that made this one work for me where the last one didn’t quite.

First is that the relationship between Colbie and Marc isn’t instalove or instalust. They’ve known each other forever, they’ve always been friends or at least friendly and have always gotten along. They tease each other, but it’s never mean-spirited and always done in friendship even if that friendship is also designed – by Marc – to keep Colbie at arm’s length.

Colbie may want more, but she wants more in a way that Marc obviously doesn’t. And she’s smart enough to know that and keep her heart safe as long as they maintain that slight distance.

The reasons they have kept to friendship feel real and organic to the story and their characters. The message she got from her parents’ relationship is just how terrific and supportive a forever love can be. The message Marc got from his dad is that grief never ends. Not that Gabe Jackson doesn’t love his wife and his family, but he’s never gotten over the loss of his twin and never will. Which doesn’t mean that he hasn’t had a fulfilling life, but that Marc has taken the wrong lesson from what he’s observed.

The relationship that develops between Colbie and Marc is a relationship of equals. The squad comes to get her, but she and Marc rescue each other. They’re not holding each other back AND they’re not pushing each other into places they don’t want to be.

And very much on my third hand, or claw, or whatever the Gizzida-Terran hybrids have, the new front in the old war heats up in this story in a fantastic way. In the first two books in this series, the fight was a bit, well, amorphous. It needed to happen, it was clearly happening, but to make it into a good story it needed a focus – and now it has one.

The potential is that it’s going to be even bloodier and more interesting this time around because the nature of the enemy has changed. The original Gizzida invaders could be kicked off Earth because they weren’t part of it. This new threat takes the worst of the old threat and makes it home grown in a way that’s going to make this fight harder and uglier and even more righteous when Hunter Squad wins.

Sooner or later. Probably later. Because there are just oodles of great story-telling possibilities, along with so many chances for steamy romance, just waiting to be told. In the end, it took TWENTY books for Hell Squad to get their job done. I wouldn’t be mad – at all – if Hunter Squad needs every bit as many.

Series: Hunter Squad #3
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

When Hunter Squad’s pilot crashes alone in the monster infested mountains, Hunter Squad rushes to save her. Marc tries to act like he is just rescuing any of his teammates, but that isn’t true. Colbie means so much to him, but he doesn’t know if he can let her in. But after dealing with dangerous monsters and situations, he may finally be able to admit his feelings.

As a huge fan of Hell Squad, I of course am really enjoying Hunter Squad. It is fantastic to be back in this world and to finally see what the future looks like after the defeat of the Gizzida. Marc is the son of Gabe and Emerson (Book #3 of Hell Squad), and much like his father and twin, struggles to show his true feelings. I enjoyed watching Marc slowly come to terms with his feelings for Colbie and that when he finally admitted them to her, he went all out with a big declaration. Marc is a very protective man and we do see some tension between him and Colbie at the thought of her being in danger, but it doesn’t last long (which I appreciated).

Colbie is the daughter of pilot Flnn and Layla (Book #10 of Hell Squad) and like her father, is a very capable pilot. Colbie was smart and capable, but also cognizant of her inexperience being on the front lines of monster fighting but that doesn’t stop her from fighting back. I really liked her and that she didn’t let Marc push her around.

Colbie and Marc’s relationship was very fast paced and filled with danger. They have been crushing on each other for years but Colbie’s crash finally pushes them into admitting it and acting on those feelings. Like most of the books in this series, I enjoyed the mix of relationship building and dangerous monster attacks.

One of the small things that happened in this book that I loved was seeing some of the Hell Squad and Berserks back on the battlefield to help their kids. I love seeing them still kicking ass and trying to protect their family. Also it is just great to see how these original warriors' roles have changed in the community.

Overall, this was another fantastic book for this series. I look forward to reading the next one since there is a new threat against humans and I am very curious to see what will happen next with it, especially since it seems to be targeting specific people.

Colbie is one of the best pilots in the settlement. The daughter of two of the heroic pilots who fought against the Gizzida invasion. But she is no soldier and Marc worries at her brazen attitude when flying missions. His worst nightmare comes true when her aircraft is downed on a mission. Now Hunter Squad need to act fast to find her.

Marc is the biggest, baddest warrior but watch him crumble when his friend is in danger. He's the affable, bed hopping, commitment-phobe of this new generation of warriors but that is a bit of a fragile façade, and his twin knows it! He acts all cocksure and unflappable but when Colbie needs him he hopes that those cracks in his composure don't shows.

Ah a man trying (and failing spectacularly) to hide his feelings for his friend. He tries so hard to be non-chalant when Colbie brings a date but inside he's planning the poor lad's demise! Marc and Colbie may be sparky banter but Colbie is pretty sure that he still sees her as his little friend who needs looking after. Their dad's may be besties but sometimes she just wants to scream to get him to notice her.

The Gizzida may be gone but their influence and experiments lives on. Marc really struggles with the memories and trauma of almost losing his twin when they were children and seeing his father still struggle with the death of his own twin. Colbie understands the responsibility of living up to a couple of legends but has managed to carve out her own niche. Marc has a couple of wobbles and acts like a bit of an over-protective d*ck but he finally manages to accept that Colbie can look after herself and she will fight tooth and nail to get back to him. Colbie really stands her ground when everyone around her is trying to protect (smother) her.

Fast paced, chock full of action, adventure, alien monsters and some intense friends to lovers romance.

I had a small squee moment when some of my favourites from Hell Squad and the Berserkers went back on the Hunt! I love a good cameo from the original generation tying things together.

I really loved this book. The Hell Squad series has always been one of my favorite series of Anna's and I love that we're back in that world again with Hell Squad, the Berserkers and their grown children. A few of those grown kids are part of Hunter Squad. They hunt the monsters that are still around from when the Gizzida experimented and created them.

Colbie is Hunter Squad's pilot. When her plane crashes while out delivering supplies, Hunter Squad goes out to rescue her. Marc is especially upset that she crashed and could be hurt or worse. And that's the start of an adventure to rescue Colbie (and Colbie even rescuing Marc too.) from different monsters in woods, waterfalls and in the Blue Mountain based that was abandoned 30 years before.

This was a great action, adventure romance. I loved Marc and Colbie together. And I loved that we got to see what the Blue Mountain base was like since it was evacuated 30 years before. It was also fun that we still get to see characters from the original Hell Squad books like Doc Emerson (Marc's mom), Finn Erickson (Colbie's dad), and even Tane, Hemi, and Marcus to name a few.

This is the 3rd Hunter Squad book, but you don't have to read the previous 2 to enjoy this one. I do recommend reading the first 2 along with the Hell Squad books though, just because they are great books too and just knowing the previous characters from the other books makes this one even better.

I was given an ARC of this book, but am voluntarily giving my honest review.

5 STARS: ++ Action with Hunter & Hell Squad
OMG, I am in heaven. Hunter Squad encounters LOTS of monsters while looking for pilot Colbie Erickson and her downed Talon quadcopter. It’s vital to find her fast because the Blue Mountains are full of deadly monsters created by the alien Gizzida.
Unarmed and injured, Colbie survived the crash and then found cover to wait for Hunter Squad. The rescue team needs rescuing. Marc and Colbie get separated from the squad and must hide overnight until morning and rescue. They stumbled upon a secret back door to the old Blue Mountain Base, home to Hell Squad and survivors after the alien invasion 30 years ago. Marc and Colbie will hopefully be safe to shelter inside and treat Marc’s serious injuries. It’s a ‘blast from the past’ walking through the former Hell Squad base. But it isn’t empty.
For all those who read and love the HELL SQUAD series, it is awesome to see these former warriors still kicking butts and taking names. Finn, Colbie’s dad, Tane, Marcus, Hemi, and many more, assist in the rescue and a later mission to capture a horrible monster for the lab techs to examine. ALL the while, Marc is denying his feelings for Colbie, which hurts her. But they have a happy ending, and they get new ‘evolved’ monsters to contend with in the future. LOVED this story. Linda

Colbie Erickson found herself alone, wounded and among horrible and dangerous monsters, what a terrifying situation! I'd been waiting for this story for a while because the incident with Colbie's ship had intrigued me. The descriptions had me on the edge of my seat, because nothing good ever comes from an encounter with the Gizzida's creatures. As they say, "small but mighty," Colbie proved what she was made of. And what can I say about Marc, who had to fight and conquer his own demons to appreciate what fate had in store for him? So many strange things happened. The suspense was maintained throughout with the twists and turns of the action, which were nothing like what I expected. And between monsters, monsters and more monsters’ encounters, there was time for romance and passion because with so much fear, running, and desperation, the protagonists needed more than just their weapons to keep going. At least, that's what I think. Colbie almost made me laugh with her comments. I really enjoyed this story, and even more so because several of my favorite heroes from the past were present. Action, suspense, adventure, tons of strange and dangerous creatures, romance, passion, intense fights, and a surprising discovery. I love this kind of fiction that entertains me and gets my mind racing with exciting situations.

Colbie is the Talon quadcopter pilot for Hunter Squad, which is comprised of many of the children of the original crew that fought and destroyed the Gazzida thirty years earlier. At that time, an alien race (the Gazzida) attacked earth and destroyed most cities and killed most of the population. While the Gazzida are gone, they left many monsters behind.

Those monsters have been reproducing and creating new monsters that are deadly and dangerous to the surviving population of earth. The Hunter Squad hunts them down and destroys them whenever they can.

As this book opens, Colbie has crashed her Talon, and she’s somewhere in the Blue Mountains and her teammates desperately want to find her. One teammate in particular—Marc—really wants to find her. She has become very important to him in a friendship way. Because Marc has experienced loss in his lifetime, he is hesitant to risk real feelings for anyone. Yet Colbie has some of these real feelings for him, but has been hiding them from Marc because she knows what he’s like.

Needless to say, circumstances conspire to force them together and they have to rely on each other to survive. This is a fun and interesting story with a perfect setup for the next book in this series. Enjoy!

Good

Marc and Colbie

When pilot Colbie is downed, somewhere in the monster infested Blue Mountains of Australia, it’s up to Hunter Squad to get their pilot back.
Marc had never really admitted the way he feels about Colbie, but he isn’t about to let the monsters get her.
Colbie knew Marc would come for her, but when the two of them are separated from the team, they will have to figure out how to survive on their own until they can be rescued.

Another enjoyable, fast sci-fi romance read from Anna, this one features two of the children from some of our Hell Squad team members! In an extra plus for fans, a number of the old favourites make cameo appearances in this book, even as the new squads face dangers their parents never had to.
It sets up a new storyline to come in the future, and I’m a little sad that I will have to wait for such a long time to read where the next story takes it!

If you’re a SFR fan, or loved the Hell Squad series, then this is a fast, action filled, entertaining read.

Yippi, great to be back in the Hunter Squad, alien predators adventure again….
Well actually, this book reminded me about the tension and angst I felt with the original series. The rollercoaster ride of danger and death vs the temporary joys and HEA’s of beloved characters. That just goes to prove how good those books were and how fun the Hunter Squad books are. It is a joy to get back to this alien infested world and see what happiness this next generation can carve out for themselves. I loved how the …ahem..older generation…is still involved and portrayed as active. Marc (Hunter Squad Bk 3) rocks. I will go back and re-read the whole series, it’s that fun (and cool to see Anna Hackett’s growth as a writer). I have no problem reading this book and leaving a review.

This is another fab addition to the series and I love any chance to dive into the Hell Squad/Hunter Squad world :D Marc and Colbie's story is a friends-to-lovers one and I loved following Marc's processing of his emotions. It took time for him to actually realize how he felt for her, he just knew he had to save her, after she crashed. The monsters are still overwhelming and scary and I loved the roller coaster reading ride I got with hitting the edge of my seat, again and again, throughout. Expect to be glued to your reader when you dive into this high octane read as you follow Marc and Colbie to their fab and steamy HEA. Good fun!

The third Hunter Squad book is a captivating addition to the saga. I particularly enjoyed Marc Jackson’s backstory and his evolving relationship with Colbie Erickson, which added great emotional depth to the rescue mission. The discovery of the Gizzida-Terran hybrid and the high stakes at Blue Mountain Base provide a compelling focus for the series. You’ve achieved an excellent balance of adventure and character growth, and I look forward to seeing where the squad goes as the war escalates. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Marc and Colby are a friends to lovers story, but of course, it's not as simple as that. I enjoyed Marc as he worked through his relationship problems to find his way to Colbie. And there's a new monster in town. I was right there with them when they went into their parents' old home base...and finding monsters. This book was hard to put down. I can't wait to see how the next couple fight to save their friends and family against the homegrown invaders.

I enjoyed the Hell Squad series and now the Hunter Squad is living up to the same expectations!
It's familiar but not the same as it's decades later for the characters and their grown families.

The apple doesn't fell far from the tree for these people!

The same fighting monsters and fast paced action!

Marc and colborn

One of the teams crew goes down in her halo, Marc can not hide his feeling anymore when they both nearly die. A great follow on book next is zeke his twin.
I did think they would find uncle zeke in them cones. (Could not remember how he dies in first series, so I thought maybe) no spoilers it did not happen.

Awesome!

I have read all the books where you meet all the parents of Hunter Squad. Reading this book was like meeting old friends, and now their children. I think that is one of the best part about reading her series. You can't help but fall in love with the characters.

This book is a great tie-in to the Hell Squad series. I loved the next generation characters. There's enough background given that you need not have read the first series to enjoy this one. The oval shaped balls gave me the creeps but the monsters saying "help me" gave me goosebumps. It's a thrilling hot read. Looking forward to the next in this series.

The mystery deepens with new elements coming into play. This book was a fast read, I think due to the full-on action from the first page and little down time. Love Colbie and Marc, they're well suited for each other, he's overprotective and she's feisty enough to hold her own. All in all, a fun read with all the elements. Enjoy!
