A junior novelization that retells Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters
Rumi, Mira, and Zoey are the world-famous girl group HUNTR/X. When they aren’t selling out stadiums, they protect the world from a force of powerful demons that have threatened the world for centuries. But have they met their match with the arrival of Saja Boys, an infuriatingly cute boy band who happen to be demons in disguise? This junior novelization is the official retelling of Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters.
Based on the screenplay by Danya Jimenez & Hannah McMechan and Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans Based on KPop Demon Hunters, the film Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans
Perfect movie-script to book adaptation for the intended age range (5-10yrs). (Minus the song lyrics).
Still as obssessed with the movie and characters nine months post-release. 💜🩷🩵 I have been waiting for something like this to release to add to my shelf.
If you loved the movie and just want a quick read, definitely pick it up (especially if you want to grow your KPDH collection).
How do you translate a musical into novel form? Not well, apparently. The power of the popular songs that litter this latest cultural phenomenon is lost in this novelization. This junior novelization is nearly a word-for-word transcript of the movie, with the author even going so far as to take the visual metaphors (such as the girls' eyes turning to hearts when they see the Saja Boys) into a real thing that's happening. So apparently their eyes can transform into giant hearts and they can cry popcorn. Once or twice the author does a good job of explaining the song that's being sung and it's importance to the scene but that doesn't come until later on. For 2/3 of the book, they just simply state "They start singing [insert song here]." This would be entirely lost if someone is reading the book yet hasn't seen the movie yet and, therefore, doesn't know the songs. (I know that seems highly unlikely because A) Who hasn't seen this movie yet, and B) It would seem only fans of the movie would read this book, yet I have friends that would prefer to read the book first before seeing the movie).
Now, my son Nathan, is a huge fan of the movie (which is how I wound up in this position to begin with) and he thoroughly enjoyed it. He would rank it 5 stars (but I think he's being generous). He liked that it was the same as the movie (admittedly a rarity for novelizations) and he likes the characters. He enjoyed reading the action being played out.
it doesn't deserve a 5⭐️ rating (more like a 3⭐️), unfortunately I'm completely biased and have been completely obsessed with this movie since June so sue me
(im very aware I'm not the intended demographic for this, so I found most of it a little to simple but it is age appropriately difficult so thumbs up on that)
Read this for book bingo. Author literally rewatched the film and made a transcript of it. that being said, i can't give it a lower score given its accuracy.
