“Slow Fire” by Spencer K.M. Brown is one of the best short story collections I’ve read in a long time. They’re all phenomenal. It’s southern gothic at its finest. Most, if not all, of the stories are set in the Western Piedmont of North Carolina and each short story carries both grit and heart. You will wish to keep reading long after each story finishes, yet each one doesn’t require more. They leave you wanting but not needing more with just enough closure to assuage your longing to continue living with the myriad characters he deftly introduces us to. Do yourself a favor and grab this book!
