Ljubavne pjesme

Rate this book

A breakout literary phenomenon and #1 New York Times Bestselling Author, Rupi Kaur wrote, illustrated, and self-published her first poetry collection, 'milk and honey' in 2014. Next came its artistic siblings 'the sun and her flowers' and ‘home body’, both debuting at #1 on bestseller lists across the world. These collections have sold more than 11 million copies and have been translated into over 43 languages. Most recently in 2022- she released her 4th book ‘Healing Through Words’ which is a journey of guided writing exercises to help the reader explore their creativity.

As she has done from the very beginning, Rupi self-produced ‘Rupi Kaur Live’, the first poetry special of its kind, which debuted on Amazon Prime Video in 2021.

Rupi Kaur graces stages across the globe on sold-out world tours. These shows are a poetic theatrical experience interlaced with her own touch of stand-up. Her work touches on love, loss, trauma, healing, femininity, and migration. She feels most at home when creating art, performing her poetry onstage, and spending time with family and friends.

Absolutely beautiful!

Selections of her love poems from her previous published collections.

Two poems stood out as a reflection of my husband:

Page 68
my favorite thing about you is your smell
you smell like
earth
herbs
gardens
a little more
human than the rest of us

Page 41
they should feel like home
a place that grounds your life
where you go to take the day off

— the one

I was absorbed in the intimacy and feeling of each poem.

Every time I read or reread poems by Rupi Kaur, parts of me that I didn’t realize needed healing are touched.

As this is a compilation of love poems from previous works by this author, I've read most of these poems before. I quite enjoy Kaur's writing for it's spareness and directness. Some readers are critical of her style, but I find that her words resonate with me, even comfort me at times. An easy, gentle read.

This book is aesthetically very pleasing, beautiful artwork and colors, even stickers are included in the back. Really gorgeous. The poems however lacked depth and generally fell flat since some poems were one liners, that conveyed rarely anything unique or a new perspective. Most of the time it was just a single sentence on a two page spread.

“It was as though
Someone had slid ice cubes
Down the back of my shirt
-orgasm”

This would be a great line in a romance novel, but as a poem it’s not working. That goes for quite a few of the poems. There were however some longer poems that I did enjoy and that were really good. I wish she would full poems more than those one liners, but the latter made her famous, so probably not.

I should have realized that this was just a collection republishing previous works of Rupi Kaur, but despite being a bookseller, I cannot read. That is to say, it is not a new book. I got excited and bought it, and wow, what a cute pink cover! Also hey look, there are bonus stickers at the end. :) Two pages do not even have a poem at all, only a drawing.

for the love of my life
i am trying my best to have hope
i'll keep greeting each morning
with an i will
when it feels like i can't
i will
i will
i will
meet a day that will melt me
i will move and the sadness
will fall off my shoulders
to make room for joy
i will be full of color
i will touch the sky again

From an artistic standpoint, this book was visually appealing. I enjoyed the artwork and the extras included. However, from a writing standpoint, I was disappointed that this was all poems from her other books. I’ve read her earlier works so nothing was new to me. I would’ve enjoyed new material. The anniversary editions and collections of old works aren’t for me.

2 stars solely for the aesthetic and art

A lovely way to reflect on her love poems since i read them years ago. Interesting to see how meanings change over time and based on who you have in your life 💖 Just wish there were more of her collections!

The book is adorable and the art is nice. However, if you’re a fan of hers this is all recycled work.

I feel like every time Rupi releases a collection, it's my new favourite- but this one was pure magic.

Blame it on the season of Love, but she just gets it. I love, love, and I loved these. Deep, real, and raw honest emotion.
