A great recap of the California Gold Rush by incorporating history, and various miners journals, as well as an international view of the rush. It's also a great book that gives you perspective of various California cities like the rise of San Francisco and Sacramento.
The journals give you a sense of struggle and survival from these people who risked everything for gold. Human nature could not be more real and sincere than the tales told in "Gold Dust."
Terrific source on the grueling Gold Rush journey to California: navigating seasickness, illness and boredom on the ships, or trudging across the country. Stories are told through many individual characters, fueled by extensive research and vivid writing. As a Californian, I enjoyed seeing the familiar names -- Mark Hopkins, Brannan, Crocker, Lick, etc. -- that live on today in streets and landmarks, and learning the early stories. Evocative images of early San Francisco, too.
This is a detailed history of the California Gold Rush following the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill. It examines the people who set off to California as well as the obstacles both getting there and once they arrived. The reader gets a feel for what these men and women endured.
