This was tea ☕️ I wasn’t expecting to be so moved by this story but here we are…

Check out the trigger warnings for this book bc this one was HEAVYY. Im not a very big dark romance reader or enjoyer, but this was actually really good — and therapy was involved (THANK GOD). The scene where Lydia is reunited with her family will haunt me for a while. The first half of the book was a hard read, not because it wasn’t well written, but just because of how wrong everything felt. I’m glad I stuck through to the end, the plot finally started thickening around the half way mark, and the story progressed really well from then on.

I don’t know why but I was picturing Barbie fiera as Kat from euphoria as the main character. Usually I self insert but the brain is a crazy thing, as the story goes. Thank you to Hambright PR and the publishers for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

This was exactly what I expected from Julia Sykes. She’s not afraid to touch on dark romance themes and holds nothing back. She also makes a clear distinction between BDSM and non consensual sexual relationships or violent encounters which I truly enjoyed.

Lydia- what a strong character growth with this FMC. She truly embodies strength in regaining her power back.

Smith- he’s the perfect example of a Dom and knows it’s his responsibility to take care of his sub. I really enjoyed how he was her rock for all that she went through.

5/5 ⭐️ 5/5 🌶️ 🥵🔥

Check TWs before reading!⚠️
This was such a dark, emotional and suspenseful read. I was fully enraptured from the very beginning. The different dynamics and relationships between the main characters was layered and captivating. My heart broke for our FMC several times through this book😭. I have read 4 of Julia Sykes’ books now, and they all have been fantastic emotional and dark reads.

I recieved this copy from Hambright publishing, but this is my personal honest review!

Wow... this book was DARK! Its about abduction, torture, bdsm and submission(but not in a fun way), bdsm (but in a fun way).

Lydia's journey is not easy. She is abducted from a bdsm club in Chicago and taken to New York to be a tortured Bdsm captive to her "master". After escaping, with the help of FBI agent, James Smith. Lydia finds herself healing from some very severe trauma. This book is raw, its honest, its not pretty and thats what makes it so amazing. Its real trauma and healing.

The journey to find and capture "master" almost felt like a subplot to the healing journey.

My only critique would be that capturing "master" was to fast and almost easy. I would've liked to feel more gratification from that part, having it drawn out and deeper.

There was definitely some surprise shock factors to this book(Tucker), that totally caught me off gaurd! You'll have to read to find out!

4.7/5✨
4/5🌶️

[Attention! This story contains several impactful subjects that may be triggering for some readers.)

"Slave", that's how the main female character was presented in the beginning of this book. She was kidnapped one day and kept captive and drugged several years by a ruthless man, who also took advantage of her. Somehow, she was rescued from that place, but the trauma was still very impactful, which made recovery very difficult. That's why "slave" instantly became attached to the man who showed her kindness and who understood her fragile state. Because of the constant time they had to spend together, things started to change between them, but was she in the right mental state to start something with someone at that time?

Wow!! This story was definitely so very shocking and disturbing. The events that happened to "slave" were disgusting and I totally understood why she chose to react in the way she did. It was something which could deeply affect someone and that's exactly what happened to her. I was instantly captivated by this story, constantly questioning each character from this book. There was a constant suspense, but the unknown was so nerve-wracking to me! I felt emotional to see her getting attached to that kind man. Their story was at the same time sweet and beautiful, but also really intense and spicy. I still don't know how to feel about that new connection which formed between them, considering "slave's" fragile mental state and how strange was that attachment to the man. That made this story so intriguing to me, not really knowing which side to choose.

I'm still so very much confused about this story, still having sooo many unanswered questions. I guess that I need now to continue reading this series, in order to find all the answers to everything that intrigues me. Once again, be aware of the triggers in this book! There are some really rough things that are happening in this story, which could have a strong effect on some of you. Please take care of your mental health!

Truly grateful for the opportunity Hambright Pr and the author by offering me this e-copy. Thank you so much! I'm soooo curious to find out what comes next after this story 🫣.

A Cage of Tenderness and Torment - this.book.is.DARK. and oh so amazing!

The FMC in this story has been abducted, and broken, to the point that she will only do what she is told by "Master." If Master doesn't say she can, than she does not. She is found by MMC Smith James, an FBI agent on a drug bust at a BDSM club. Initially, the FBI thinks that she is a submissive that has been drugged, but after the drugs have left her system, her submissive behavior continues. Luckily, Smith is a Dom, and realizes she needs structure, so takes on the role of her "Master" while the previous guy is dubbed "that Bastard." Soon enough, Smith learns through things that she says, that she had actually been abducted, and tortured. Not even knowing who she is, because she has closed that side of herself off, the FBI has to work to figure out her identity, and also track down that Bastard. She is staying with Smith, and their close proximity slowly becomes more intimate.

This story is so good, I could not put it down. Being inside her head with her, while she is literally battling brainwashing, and trying to understand the new "Master" dynamic, is fascinating. It also can be frustrating, knowing that Smith is trying to help, but she initially resists, and in her head says what she is actually going to do. But she is amazingly strong, where she thinks she is weak, is where she is the strongest. She didn't just survive, she locked her true self away to keep it safe, so she could exist as this "thing" for her abductee.

I really would have loved to get a few chapters from Smith's point of view, because for a time, I started to get angry with him, allowing her to continue in this dom/sub relationship, while her mind was so fractured. As she remembers who she is, and starts therapy, I realized that what Smith did for her was the kindest thing anyone could have done. While it broke him to continue to treat her that way, it was the only way she could have come back to her self.

This story is tragic, and sad, but also amazing how strong she is, and has such a happy ending.

Thank you to Hambright PR and the author for a copy of this story.

Some fav quotes:
"After long days of captivity, she was disturbed to realize that she almost longed to see him, if only to cling on to her deteriorating sanity."

"If I could speak freely, then maybe I was also allowed to think for myself. The idea was almost as terrifying as it was tempting."

"How could something so wonderful be so torturous? And how could that torture be so rapturous?"

"I was elated by what he had given me-he had returned the pleasures of my body that had been robbed from me."

"I am claiming you. Your body is mine. And I get to toy with it and play with it as long as I like. Even though I would never see him again, he would own my body, my pleasure, for the rest of my life."

"My life with Tucker would be so much easier if I could allow Master to fade away. But like the masochist I was, I couldn't stop indulging in my self-inflicted torment."

""I have my life back now. And I'm not wasting a single day of it. I'm living for me now. I don't care what anyone else thinks." His lips parted slightly, and I was amazed to recognize awe, reverence, in his expression. "You are the strongest woman I've ever known.""

""You're a far more compulsive addiction than any drug.""

This book doesn’t just walk into dark romance… it drags you in, locks the door, and dares you to feel something about it. 🖤🥀

From the very first lines, you’re dropped into Lydia’s fractured world, where identity is stripped away and survival becomes something tangled up in control, devotion, and dependence. And Smith? He’s not your typical “rescuer.” He’s the kind that blurs every line until you’re questioning what safety even means anymore.

✨ Vibes:
• captivity ➝ comfort ➝ confusion
• “he saved me… but at what cost?”
• devotion that feels like both a lifeline and a leash

There’s this haunting push and pull between tenderness and ownership that lingers on every page. You feel Lydia’s reliance on Smith, and it’s equal parts unsettling and addictive. The emotional tension? Thick. The moral gray areas? Practically pitch black.

If you love dark romance that leans into:
✔️ psychological intensity
✔️ power imbalance dynamics
✔️ morally questionable “heroes”
✔️ heroines fighting to reclaim themselves

…this one will absolutely get under your skin and stay there.

⚠️ Definitely check triggers before diving in. This is not a light read. It’s raw, heavy, and meant to make you uncomfortable in the best (and worst) ways.

Final thought:
This isn’t a story about escape. It’s about what happens when the cage starts to feel like home. And that? That’s the most dangerous part. 🔗🖤

this was….a very deeply emotional and raw read. it was written in a way that was easily digestible but left you feeling this feeling of hurt and anger, mainly sadness for the fmc.

we see and experience the things she went through. we get to see how her mind has been rewired. we get to develop this deep understanding and connection with her due to the whole book being in her pov.

the way the book progressed and showed her continued fight was everything. to see her gain control but also face her fears head on. we see her get help, go to therapy, her old life. we see all these continuing factors of how it helps shape her into what she is now with little pieces of who she was then.

her relationship with smith is…multilayered. he’s there from the the beginning, of when she’s saved. he becomes her safe space. someone who encourages her, supports her, and gives her those pieces that she needs to be whole, but in a more healthy way. there’s ups and downs and at times you agree with smith and the way he acts with her even though you see her side of the whole thing. you can see why he treats her the way she does, because while being inside her mind you see how much she depends on him. the obsession. the grasp of being enough.

their relationship turned into something that warms your heart, especially after. when she’s more of a whole person, you see more of her. her characteristics. her actions. the playful banter we get between them. those cute “normal” moments. the way they talk and interact now, isn’t just stepping on eggs shells to help someone live. their relationship truly flourishes.

this was an amazing read and so well written, and each little thing was taken and held with care.

This was a rollercoaster of emotions!!!!!! DAMN.
This is a VERY dark BDSM romance with a hell of a lot of trigger warnings. It deals with really deep trauma and SA.
First off, the start was incredibly captivating! Like you hate to love it, but couldn’t put it down. It was a difficult read the first third - half of the book because of the trauma it was dealing with. It then got quite repetitive. And I definitely was questioning if the MMC was morally ok in this 🤔 but you do kind of understand after a while. The twists in this though had my JAW ON THE FLOOR!! TC, wow wasn’t expecting that. Then the resolution with the b’ard at the end? It was soooo good but it was over so quickly there was barely any time to focus on such a big point of the story! Also the epilogue was ridiculous to me like wayyyyy too predictable & rushed. But overall the story is either very harsh or very intriguing you can’t not read on!!

“All I knew was there was a storm gathering deep within me, and I was desperate for the lighting to strike.”

“The lustful light in his dancing eyes let me know that was his exact intention. He controlled me completely, even in my disobedience. He took possession of my defiance, harnessing it and using it as a weapon against me, fashioning it into a toy he could play with. With that realization, I gave him everything: my body, my will, my soul.”

“Our intimacy was intense enough to make me ache, and like a true masochist, I craved even more.”

“I wouldn’t allow Clayton to force him to leave me. Smith was essential to my survival.
Maybe some people would call that unhealthy. I preferred to call it love.”

“His eyes were like twin moons in the night sky: calming and peaceful, yet powerful enough to control the ocean’s waves.” 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | A Cage of Tenderness and Torment – Julia Sykes
Bestie… this book did exactly what the title promised—wrapped me up in something soft and brutal at the same time 😭
This is one of those dark romances that leans hard into the push and pull—control vs vulnerability, pain vs comfort—and I was EATING IT UP. The emotional tension?? Thick. The dynamic?? Messy in the way dark romance lovers crave.
I really loved how the story balanced the intensity with moments that actually made you feel something deeper than just shock value. There’s a tenderness underneath all the chaos that kept me hooked, even when things got heavy.
That said, there were a few moments where I wanted just a little more—more depth in certain emotional beats, more time to really sit in the character growth. But overall? Still a solid ride.
✨ Vibes:
Dark romance
Possessive, intense MMC
Emotional damage (the good kind 😌)
Power dynamics + vulnerability
Soft moments hidden inside the darkness
If you love stories that hurt a little while they hold you… this one’s for you.

This is the first dark romance book I’ve read that I actually enjoyed! I’m so pleased with the way this was done, and I will definitely read more of Julia’s books - and recommend this one.

As someone who worked many years with sexual assault survivors, I found the details of Lydia’s story both tastefully and accurately explained. While I agree that the average reader should heed the trigger warnings, social workers, ER nurses and LEOs should have no trouble. I enjoyed how her character developed as she healed (through VERY hard work in therapy, not magically overnight or just with great sex) and found myself talking about her to my partner throughout my reading experience. The kink community was also accurately portrayed, which I appreciate.

Agent James managed to never let me down or get on my nerves. Huge win. Usually it’s the MCs that ruin these books for me. Julia gets great thrills and suspense into a romance book too, super unexpected and enjoyable.

Thank you to the author and Hambright PR for a free copy of the book to review.

This made me cry!! The trauma the FMC undergoes is so devastating and heart wrenching. But her journey of healing, redemption, and rediscovering her identity was so powerful and moving!

As someone with a psychology degree and studying counseling, I love that a definitive term was given for her amnesia and dissociation. Plus the fact that actual therapy skills were demonstrated and helped her to recover!

The plot had me captured. From each point of discovery, there was always something else going on that the FMC would have to face. I love how much the MMC helped her, even when she was taking her own power in her identity. I also like that there was a distinct difference between BDSM and the trauma that she endured.

Not to mention that the ending was the perfect conclusion to the story!!

A Cage of Tenderness and Torment was dark, emotional, and quickly pulled me in from the beginning!
We have a rescued FMC who has to relearn trust, safety, and what it means to be cared for after everything she’s endured when kidnapped. Watching her healing journey was heartbreaking and when she got her confidence back I was so happy!!

The MMC had such a strong protective presence, and their dynamic was intense! The chemistry between them felt raw at times that made their connection feel meaningful as the story unfolded.

This isn’t a light read, but it’s addictive, emotional, and hard to put down. If you enjoy darker romances with healing, protection, and intense emotions, this one is definitely worth picking up. 🖤📚

Smith and “Jane Doe”. This is a hurt/comfort, forced proximity, captive, survivor FMC, SA abuse, FBI agent MMC x kidnap victim FMC (not by MMC), ultra protective MMC, amnesia, touch her and d!e, healing journey, single POV, “who did this to you”, PTSD rep, forbidden romance.
First and foremost I would advise trigger warning to be read and that this story definitely pushes the boundaries. Now, that being said. I absolutely LOVED this book. I could not put it down. What that says about me? Eh, I’m not going to think to much about that. This is my first book by this author but I will definitely be reading more by her. I want to start by saying I don't think this was fully for me, so take my review as a grain of salt!

The BDSM, or the dark themes happening weren't the issue for me personally. Those parts were fine. I just never really seen the connection between the characters, and got more involved in the mystery / catching the bad guy aspect and was hoping to get more out of that, I think. The ending was underwhelming and really predictable, and I already have thoughts on who the Mentor is, but won't be reading any more books connected to this unfortunately. I just wish it would have went deeper into other parts, instead of mainly focusing on the BDSM even though I understand why it was so heavy on that.

Thank you to Hambright PR for gifting me an e-arc!

~❤~🌟~❤5 TORTUROUSLY TENDER STARS~❤~🌟~❤

When I first read Knight by Julia Sykes back in 2015 (book four in the Impossible series), I was immediately enraptured by Agent Smith James and Lydia Chase’s tortuously twisted and darkly tumultuous tale. Their love story has truly lived rent free in my mind ever since, lingering long after I turned the final page. When the gloriously gifted Julia Sykes released an updated, freshly rebranded version, now titled A Cage of Tenderness and Torment, I jumped at the chance to re-immerse myself in this master and sub’s world and experience their unforgettable journey all over again.

And this spellbinding story STILL surpassed my every expectation!

Lydia always fantasized about exploring the world of BDSM, but her insatiable curiosity led her down a very dangerous path. Against her will, the naïve beauty became the prey of a sadistic monster who kidnapped her, robbing her of her freedom and dignity, and emotionally and physically tortured her in unspeakable ways.

The abuse he inflicted on her was so heinous that she was stripped of her identity to the point she couldn’t even recall her own name. To her cruel abductor, she was Slave, and he was her almighty, cruel Master who left her totally at his total mercy .

All seemed lost until a drug raid at the Decadence BDSM club one-night changes everything for her. Finally, at long last, there is a light at the end of her dark and dismal tunnel. Agent Smith James is the white knight who sweeps in and rescues Lydia from the pitch black dungeon and vows to keep her safe while he and his fellow agents hunt down the vile predator who tormented her .

Smith offers her sanctuary in his home and sets out to bring Lydia back to the world of the living, but over time his protection morphs into a tenderhearted love and molten hot desire that takes them both by storm. Smith knows he’s crossing ethical and professional lines by falling for the women he vowed to shield at all costs, and tries to resist temptation, but as he awakens a lust in her that she thought had been forever doused by her evil captor, the attraction between them is impossible to contain!

The scars she carries from her horrific ordeal are branded on her being, but for or the first time in forever, Lydia feels safe in her new “master’s” strong, sheltering arms, and she wants to please him in every way. But Smith encourages her to reclaim her lost identity and recall the fragmented pieces of her life, even at the expense of his own happiness. As their hot burning passion reaches new heights, the danger escalates. Will the FBI be able to subdue the monster before he returns for Lydia and rips her out of Smith’s arms forever?

Oh my heart! Once again, Lydia and Smith’s high octane love story struck such a visceral chord in me that it literally left me breathless. Absolutely brilliant in both concept and execution, this dark, psychological romance delivers everything a reader could crave and more. It features an FBI Dom protector to die for, a tragically broken yet incredibly resilient heroine, torrid passion that burns up the pages, heart pounding plot twists and turns, and powerful, searing emotion that refuses to let up. The connection between "Master" Smith James, who is torn between sworn duty and carnal desire, and his needy, hauntingly beautiful submissive is not only sizzling hot and steamy, but oh so exquisitely tender. From the moment the steel-eyed FBI agent rescues Lydia from the pits of hell, the trajectory of both their lives is forever changed.

“As master claimed me he would help me reclaim myself.”

Their bond is raw, intimate, and achingly real, as the characters connect on a soul-deep level that transcends mere physical attraction and ignites into an enduring, EPIC love that’s cosmic, electric, and all consuming.

The abuse unleashed on sweet Lydia during her cruel captivity and the suffering she endured at the hands of her cruel abductor was beyond repugnant. “I had forgotten about the world outside my dungeon, and now my recollections of such things threatened to call forth the woman I had once been.” But now that she’s in her noble-hearted savior’s protective custody, he vows to heal her heart, body and soul and keep her safe at all costs!

Or die trying.

“His eyes burned into me, twin stars falling to Earth to sear into my soul.”

The manner in which this commanding yet compassionate Dom helps her reintegrate into old life and at the same time satiates her secret, unfulfilled desires was utterly enthralling.

As always, Ms. Sykes’ narrative is rich, vivid, and utterly immersive. It immediately sweeps you into the dangerous and emotionally charged world of these mesmerizing characters, pulling you under its spell and refusing to let go. Every page evokes a powerful gamut of intense emotions. PAIN. PASSION. FEAR. HEARTBREAK. REDEMPTION. And, finally, SWEET SALVATION. The emotional payoff is as devastating as it is beautiful, leaving a lasting impression that stays with you well beyond the final chapter.

Not your typical BDSM storyline by any means, this NOT an easy read at times, or for the faint of heart, so heed the trigger warnings! But if hurt-comfort, touch her and die, kinky dark romances are your kryptonite you are guaranteed to be enraptured! The journey Smith and Lydia take together is worth every gut punching, nail-biting, spine-tingling moment and when all is said and done, these two destined lovers prove that eternal love can triumph over agony against all odds!

It was such a joy and privilege to reenter Smith and Lydia’s orbit, and once again, A Cage of Tenderness and Torment sets the bar incredibly high for BDSM erotic thrillers. It is a haunting, unforgettable story that will grip your heart and never let go.

A MUST READ!

...Slaves don’t have names.”

It's been a hot minute since I last read a Julia Sykes book. She writes emotionally charged dark romance with a splash of BDSM that I thoroughly enjoy.

Now if BDSM isn't your cuppa, I would tell you to skip this book. The BDSM themes are very heavy in this book. And while I enjoy D/s in my romance, a relationship that takes the D/s out of the bedroom and into day to day life can be a challenge for me.

The story is a dark one and certainly not for novice dark romance readers. Although most of the FMC's brutal experience while captive is off the pages and we learn about it through her memories, it's no less easy to read about. This is a woman who survived hell at the hands of a brutal psychopath. A woman who was broken enough to forget her name and very identity. A woman who has only known pain and darkness for so long as her memory spans, and doesn't remember the woman she was before her capture.

She is rescued by an FBI agent who from his experience in the lifestyle immediately understands what she needs. But herein also lies the rub for me. I struggled with the relationship that developed between her and Smith, who she refers to as "Master" even in her head for the majority of the book. And while I understand the why, given what she's been through, he felt more like a crutch in the beginning. Her shy pursue of him was difficult for me to connect with, given what she went through.

In general, I struggled a bit with the characters and the relationship development. I enjoyed the final third of this book a lot more as we finally get to see the FMC discover herself and who she was before her capture. I liked that she had that before really getting into a relationship with Smith. But the ending also felt a touch rushed and anticlimactic, considering all of the build up.

All in all, I did enjoy the story. And while it's not something I'd ever come back to, it still hit the spot. If you enjoy dark romance, with trauma healing, suspense, and a heavy element of BDSM, definitely give this a try.

Well hi 👋 I am finally back to posting reviews, and what a month April has been. This book has come along for the entire emotional ride of April (and this year generally) and wow, it was intense. I’ve never really ventured into books that explore the BDSM world before, so this was definitely a wild introduction 🤣

That being said, I genuinely really enjoyed it. While I’m very much a vanilla girly (and probably always will be), I thought the lifestyle was portrayed incredibly well. It honestly didn’t feel too far removed from what you generally see represented in mainstream media (think like 50 Shades of Grey but a little more descriptive), well aside from That Bastard. Trust me, when you read it, you’ll understand exactly why he does NOT represent the community.

Lydia is such a beautifully complex FMC. The way her trauma, psychology, and emotional struggles were written felt raw, understood, and incredibly believable. @authorjuliasykes did an exceptional job capturing the complexity of what Lydia experienced.

And Smith 😏 let’s just say I may have discovered I have a bit of a knight in shining armour kink too because that man was SWOON worthy 😩 He was so well developed, protective without being flat, and genuinely one of my favourite parts of the book.

This story had everything I’m naturally drawn to in romance:
⛓️‍💥 complex characters
⛓️‍💥 trauma and healing
⛓️‍💥 romance
⛓️‍💥 SPICE (and I mean spice 👀)
⛓️‍💥 crime/suspense

The only thing that stopped this from being a full 5 star read for me was wanting more answers surrounding That Bastard. I know there’s another book that will likely expand on it further, but I really wanted a little more closure or development there by the end of this story. That extra finality would have made the ending hit perfectly for me.

Overall though, this was a brilliantly written dark romance, and I’d absolutely recommend it to readers who already enjoy dark romance and are comfortable with high levels of spice and kink.

Thank you @hambright_pr and @authorjuliasykes for this gifted copy to review!

ARC Review

A Cage of Tenderness and Torment by Julia Sykes is a dark BDSM romance that blends intense emotional trauma with healing and passion.

Lydia Chase always wanted to explore the world of BDSM, but her curiosity led her into the hands of a monstrous man who abducted and tortured her. The abuse was so severe that she lost her identity and even forgot her own name. To him, she was nothing more than a slave, and he was her Master.

Everything changes one night at a BDSM club when the FBI conducts a drug bust. Agent Smith James discovers Lydia there and immediately realizes she is a victim who needs protection. He stays with her at the hospital and eventually takes her into his home to keep her safe while the FBI searches for the man who hurt her.

Smith knows he should keep his distance, but the attraction between them is impossible to ignore. Lydia feels safe with him, perhaps for the first time in a long while, while Smith feels an overwhelming need to protect and care for her. As the investigation continues, the danger grows. Will the FBI catch the monster before he returns for Lydia? And can Lydia and Smith find love after everything she has endured?

This is an interesting story for readers who enjoy steamy, kinky scenes alongside emotionally intense storylines. The book contains several potentially triggering moments, so it may not be for everyone.

What I appreciated most was Lydia’s journey from victim to survivor. Watching her slowly reclaim her identity and become the person she wanted to be was powerful and inspiring. I also liked how protective and understanding Smith was toward her.

The story is definitely intense and at times uncomfortable because of Lydia’s traumatic past, but that emotional weight adds depth to the narrative. The ending was beautiful and satisfying.

If you enjoy dark romance, this book might be worth checking out.

So im a sucker for the hurt/comfort trope and this book follows "Slave," a woman who was kidnapped and abused for a year until she forgot her own name and family. If youre sensitive to abuse, BDSM, drug abuse, mental health issues, character death and dark themes then I would skip this book. The book starts with her rescue, where she instantly connected with the man who found her. She calls him Master, believing she is his, as she has no independent thoughts due to her trauma. Its a dark romance, and nontraditional, although there is a HEA and "Slave" who we find out is called Lydia, works hard in therapy, learns who she is, and takes back her life. "Master" who is called Smith is an FBI Angent and Dominant. He sees her need for structure after so long not being able to think for herself, and provides her comfort and a safety net my giving her "orders" and structure. He does worry about keeping her in "slave" mode but its the kindest thing he could have done as letting her completely loose and free straight away would have overwhelmed her and made it more difficult for her recover. She gets therapy and help and after finding herself she returns to her new "Master" but this time with love rather a trauma bond obsession. Smith teaches her the difference between abuse and true caring BDSM. (Its clear the author has done their research into SSC and the psychology behind BDSM)
The book is all in Lydias POV from completely broken, learning soical skills again, therapy and finally taking what she wants rather than taking what shes given. Without the duel POV it keeps the audience with Lydia as if theyre living through it with her. We get Smiths POV in the epilougue and its almost like a Guadian Angel overtone now shes healed.
It really is a beaitoful book about recovery, healing and loving again. (imo) Its more than just a smutty romance, and that connection and deeper meaning, at least for me, earned it ALL the stars.

Thank you to Julia for an ARC!

We follow Lydia, a woman who was abducted and held captive by a sadistic madman, and Smith, the FBI agent who rescued her and made it his personal mission to help her move past the trauma she was forced to endure. When Smith rescues Lydia, she doesn’t even remember her own name, as she forced herself to dissociate from her former life to cope with the horrors she was experiencing in captivity. Lydia also views Smith as her new master despite him insisting that she not view him that way. Reluctantly, Smith concedes to Lydia‘s view of him as master once he sees how it is helping her to function in the wake of what she endured; however, this is not an odd arrangement for him as he is a BDSM dom. As we progress through the story we learn more about Lydia and Smith individually and follow along with the FBI‘s investigation into the man who abducted Lydia. The relationship between Lydia and Smith had me feeling a bit questionable at times given how it had started; however, I found myself rooting for them as a couple before too long. I loved seeing how Lydia became empowered through her relationship with Smith and how he was able to help her reclaim her desires. The spice was well done and held emotional depth that truly strengthened Lydia and Smith‘s connection. The final confrontation with Lydia‘s abductor resolved a bit too quick, but it was still satisfying. Overall, I really enjoyed this one and would recommend it for other dark romance lovers, but do check TWs if needed before jumping in, as this one is DARK and f‘d up!

A Cage of Tenderness And Torment

“If pain won’t break you,” he said roughly, “maybe pleasure will.”

I have never seen character growth as strong as I seen in this FMC. It was portrayed so beautifully throughout this entire story!!

I love the fact that Smith related to Lydia in his own personal ways. What I did not expect was his backstory when it came out. Something about it just didn’t match the MMC that we have grown to love throughout reading, but i guess that really did show his amount of growth that he went through. I was kind of blind sided that the FMC really did remember more than what she lead on and it all came out during her therapy and briefing. What I did immediately see coming was the husband and best friend getting together while she was captured. I just got a weird feeling from the best friend from the moment she introduced, wasn’t a fan. I loved everything about this book besides that!! You actually get a build up and things really start picking up about 50% through. But, it was…. Amazing.

I loved this book and all of its dark trauma that it withheld. I don’t remember the last time I stayed up until midnight binging a book because I just could not put it down. It was beautifully written and I cannot wait to dive more into Julia Sykes.

This was my first book by Julia Sykes, and I really enjoyed it. One thing I’ll say upfront: check your trigger warnings. This story is an emotional rollercoaster that dives into healing, survival, loss, self-discovery, and second chances.

“𝑰’𝒎 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒔𝒂𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑴𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓. 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒎𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒐. 𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔𝒏’𝒕 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝑰 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏. 𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝑰 𝒘𝒐𝒏’𝒕. 𝑨𝒔 𝑪𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒕𝒐𝒏 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒍𝒚 𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒚𝒐𝒖, 𝑰’𝒎 𝒂 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒃𝒃𝒐𝒓𝒏 𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒆.”

There were aspects I absolutely loved, along with a few that had me second-guessing things. I felt so much for the FMC, Lydia. She went through so much, and my heart broke for her more and more as her story unfolded. The journey to healing is never easy, but having the right person by your side can make it a little more bearable.

“𝑰’𝒎 𝒃𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒐𝒖𝒔,” 𝑰 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒍𝒚. “𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒅𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝑰 𝒉𝒂𝒅 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒏. 𝑷𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒚 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒔𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝑰 𝒉𝒂𝒅 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝒎𝒚 𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒓𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆. 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒅 𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒚 𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒚, 𝒎𝒚 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒔, 𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒏’𝒕 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒂𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒅 𝒐𝒇. 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚’𝒓𝒆 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒃𝒆𝒂𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒖𝒍. 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒎𝒂𝒅𝒆 𝒎𝒆 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒃𝒆𝒂𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒖𝒍.”

As for the MMC, Agent James, I wasn’t quite sure what to think of him for a long time. He definitely had me questioning things, but I can see that his intentions came from a place of wanting to help, which is exactly what Lydia needed at that point in her life. Could she have healed without him and his techniques? Yes, but it likely would have taken her much longer.

“𝑨𝒓𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒐 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒎𝒆, 𝑳𝒚𝒅𝒊𝒂?” 𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒔𝒌𝒆𝒅 𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒍𝒚. “𝑶𝒇 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆, 𝑴𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓,” 𝑰 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒉𝒖𝒔𝒌𝒊𝒍𝒚. “𝑨𝒔 𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕.”

Julia Sykes did a great job crafting this story. It completely pulled me in and had me second-guessing every character. I was constantly building theories in my head about who might have kidnapped Lydia, and I never would have guessed the truth.

This book was absolutely beautiful but also true mindfvckery at the same. Before me start this book has very dark themes of past r@pe and @buse, please be mindful of your mental health before proceeding. It truly horrified me for a bit too, because the fmc has been conditioned and disassociated to the fact that she thinks her name is slave. However, she is lucky enough to be saved by a FBI agent, who also happened to be a dom, and tries to integrate her back into society using his more dominant mannerisms. Truly this book is about healing but there are so many terrible parts that show the extent to which a human mind can be broken. I don’t want to give away too much because there are so many plot twists and the fmcs twisted memories and warped mindset is what makes this book so fascinating yet terrifying. There were so many points in this book where I was just stunned out of my mind and many parts where I wished I could jump into the book and give her a hug. Her healing journey was so rough, and I loved watching as she started to shift back into her real self, not just a slave. The mmc, Smith of Master as she likes to call him, was truly a sweetheart, he knew she needed guidance in only the way he could provide and he did his best to keep it professional but, their chemistry was really burn through the barriers that he put up. This book was so intense and tightening beautiful, I could not put it down! I give it a 5/5
