Renwick only kills by command—or to protect Davina. She hides forbidden magic and a past stained by murder. He’s the High Lord’s assassin, bound by loyalty but torn by love. As secrets unravel and danger rises, they must choose between duty and desire. A slow-burn romantasy perfect for fans of From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout or Deal with the Elf King by Elise Kova.
A Realm of Lies and Power by Larissa Antonioni // Thank you so much for gifting me your book Larissa
Davina’s parents were killed by a mystical magic when she was ten. Ever since she’s lived separated from her sister in a temple and harboring a dangerous magic she doesn’t understand. Renwick has watched and protected Davina for years without her knowing. Something has always drawn him towards her. When someone starts murdering people the same way Davina’s parents were killed the two of them is paired up by the High Lord to catch the killer. Renwick is the Lord’s silent assassin, but when it stands between him and Davina, where will his loyalty lay?
WOW! First of, let’s take a moment to admire the beautiful cover. Ren is looking hot🤭 Secondly, I can’t believe this is Larissa’s debut?! I was immediately grabbed my the luscious writing, amazing! The descriptions were so rich and vivid I had no problem imagining the world though our protagonists eyes. As for the worldbuilding it was easy, but good. At the ending we got more information I thought was a little confusing, but I’m really looking forward to exploring it more in the sequel.
The romance was a delicious slow burn. We already knew Ren was head over heels for Davina but it took some time for her to warm up to him. Even then they both held back because of secrets we slowly unraveled through the novel. What I really loved was how gentle Ren was with Davina. He never pushed her and was always understanding. He cared for her like one one else and loved her unabashedly. And please, a guy who bathes her and brushes her hair when she can’t do it herself? SWOON alert! Ren was Draki and learned Davina Drakai so she could communicate with him and his sassy wyvern, Draxus, without anyone else understanding. It was so sweet how their trust in each other grew as they helped each other through their problems.
I found both of them lovable and strong. Davina’s journey hit hard. She had to deal with grief, self-hatred, insecurity and more. She hurt herself and had to learn to trust herself and her magic. Ren was amazing with helping her on this journey.
As for the murder mystery, I really enjoyed it. It wasn’t hard to guess who the murderer was, but I still wanted to know why and how. I wasn’t all that surprised by the plot twist at the end either, but liked it nonetheless. My heart broke for Davina. I liked the ending, but at the same time I felt it was a bit rushed. I thought things got a bit convenient sometimes. But when everything unraveled and all the secrets were revealed I wanted more, more, more. I really enjoyed it and after the way it ended I just had to DM Larissa to ask about a sequel. Rest assured, it’s coming 😅
An impressing and enjoyable debut! I’m excited to continue to series!
I'm a little biased, since I wrote the book, but I love these characters. I adore the world that surrounds them. This book holds so many pieces of my heart. I am ecstatic and nervous to put it into the world. I know, however, that Davina and Renwick deserve to have their story told.
Doing my best to leave an honest review without spoilers! A Realm of Lies and Power was an immersive, captivating read from start to finish. The author's attention to detail and descriptive prose brought the scenes to life in my mind as they unfolded—especially the world-building. The setting, with its politics, religion, and lore, I could practically feel myself sipping tea in the Arcane Realm Archives. I wanted to be there! As a first-time author, the writing is impressive. I think she did a stunning job. While I found the use of ‘male/female’ versus ‘man/woman’ a bit odd at times, it wasn’t enough to detract from my overall enjoyment. Renwick’s and Davina’s backstories were gut-wrenching and heartbreaking, in the best way. And Draxus, that cheeky wyvern, adds a touch of humor and charm—the perfect companion character. And then there’s Renwick and Davina together… Oh my goodness. The chemistry between them... And that ending?! I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. I’m already eagerly (and impatiently) awaiting the next installment. Highly recommend! 10/10 Also decided to include probably two of my favorite Renwick and Davina quotes below:
“I think, in another life, we have already met, because I knew your soul the moment that I laid eyes on you.” Renwick
“I didn’t fear the darkness. I was the darkness.” Davina
The premise of this story sounded really good to me but this book suffers from the following:
- an FMC who doubts herself at every imaginable turn even though she has a rare and powerful strong magic and weak character development - constant lip biting (it's a miracle she still has lips) - an assassin who doesn't actually have a job because he's with the FMC 24/7 - an MMC who constantly tells the MMC she's beautiful but fails to tell her their history and draws it out til she has to learn it from someone else - too many side characters with too many varied storylines - time jumps right before an important conversation reveal - chaotic plot with a lot of shock moments for no apparent reason - a very long drawn out, lukewarm romance
I'm clearly in the minority compared to other reviews. I kept reading hoping it would get better but it didn't work out for me and I won't be continuing this series.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
A Realm of Lies and Power is a gripping tale that explores the fragile nature of trust—both in others and in oneself—and the devastating impact of betrayal.
Though it’s a hot as hell love story with fun magic, an opinionated wyvern, and full of great banter, at its heart, this story examines what it means to trust when every choice feels like a risk and how betrayal reshapes the very foundation of who we are.
With vivid and fun world-building, unforgettable characters, and a love that dares to burn amidst lies, A Realm of Lies and Power delivers an unforgettable journey through heartbreak, redemption, and the search for truth in a world built on deception.
I received this advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.
I REALLY enjoyed this book. It was so well written and so detailed. Great world-building - it was so easy to get lost in this story. The characters were unique and there were times you loved them but despised them too. The secrecy, dark magic, murder and mystery all come together to make a wickedly suspenseful story wrapped in love, loyalty, desire and complex relationships. It was a good pace, a touch spicy and even though the vibes were dark there was light mixed throughout. I highly recommend A Realm of Lies and Power to fantasy lovers who love these tropes and want to be enveloped from the very first page.
Reread: The release of the audiobook for this story pulled me right into a reread, and I’m so glad it did—especially with book two having just come out. Revisiting Davina and Renwick in this format added such a different layer to the experience, making their story feel more immersive and emotionally grounded in a way that drew me in all over again.
Tiffany, the narrator, truly brought these characters to life. The distinct voices she gave to Davina and Renwick made their personalities feel more vivid, and the emotion she infused into their scenes added a depth that made every interaction hit harder. You could hear the tension, the hesitation, and the weight they both carry in a way that made their connection feel even more real. And Draxis was still one of my favorite characters—his sass and personality absolutely shine through in the narration, making every moment with him even more enjoyable. This performance didn’t just tell the story—it elevated it, and it has me even more excited to continue on to book two.
Original Review: I was completely drawn into the story of Renwick and Davina—their history, chemistry, and emotional depth made every moment between them feel charged with meaning. The way their overlapping past bleeds into the present adds so much weight to their choices and interactions. I loved watching their relationship evolve, especially as truths come to light and emotions tangle with duty and desire. The dual perspective was seamless and gave a great view into both characters—making it easy to empathize with their inner struggles and root for their growth. And let me tell you, the way the story weaves darkness, love, and the pull of good intentions was just chef’s kiss.
The magic system is another standout—the way it’s intricately tied into the world and character dynamics adds such rich layers of tension and nuance. I was especially intrigued by the layered relationships between Draxus and both Renwick and Davina—those interactions were so entertaining, and Renwick’s reactions to Draxus' behavior added some much-needed levity to the heavier moments. Watching Davina face her past and try to make peace with who she is felt emotional and empowering, while Renwick’s inner tug-of-war between his responsibilities and his heart was beautifully done. And the twists? I didn’t see them coming and loved every second of it. This book had me hooked from beginning to end, and I absolutely can’t wait to see where the story goes next!
EDIT: Re-read. Just as phenomenal as the first read through! I love this book so much, and I am incredibly excited to pick up book 2 immediately!
Thank you so much to Larissa for gifting me a copy of her debut novel to read in exchange for an honest review!
I really enjoyed this one- and to think that this is a debut?!?! The world building was phenomenal and the descriptions were so vivid that I could picture myself in the story. The two main characters were perfect. While their backstories were heartbreaking, I loved that we got this information to truly understand them and understand their motivations. Also, Draxus (the wyvern), was the best side character. I loved his sarcastic sense of humor.
The only thing holding me back from giving this a five stars is that I found it to be predictable at times. The ending did surprise me though- I was floored about one of the betrayals that occurred! I am so excited to read book 2 after the ending. If you want a new fantasy book to pick up, I would definitely recommend Larissa's book!
A great new twist on a fantasy world! I really liked the honesty of Davina's character and the realistic battle she faces internally. The book has a nearly seamless shift between 2 POVs all throughout I've not seen done before. I could easily understand each perspective as the mystery unfolded.
10/10 recommend! Such an amazing read it was impossible to put down, however adulting had to be done🤦 The authors writing will keep you hooked from start to end!
The Story: A Realm of Lies and Power centers on 28 year old woman Davina who holds powerful elemental and aether magical abilities, and 30 year old man Renwick an assassin to the High Lord with whom he shares an unbreakable bond. When young, Davina loses her parents under suspicious circumstances resulting in her and her sister being split up. In the same night a bracelet given to her by her mother is also stolen. Davina continues growing up in Asterin’s Temple where she has fallen into a somewhat quiet life of service. All is well until a mysterious murder occurs which feels oddly familiar to Davina as her parents were killed in an eerily similar fashion. Following the murders, Davina and Renwick are paired up to find the killer together but as their affections for one another begin to grow secrets start to bubble to the surface. Will dark secrets unravel their blossoming bond or will they form a united front to find the killer?
This story was a great surprise to me, it had all the elements of a thrilling and nail-biter romantic fantasy that I could have wanted. I believe FMC Davina shows tremendous growth over the duration of the story and it was fun watching her grow into her power in more ways than one. By far though, I would have to say that my favorite character was MMC Renwick dark and broody but oh so swoon-worthy. Not only that but he has a Wyvern named Draxus (another favorite character) which feels like the fantasy equivalent of a motorcycle but much cooler because it’s a giant animal and they speak to each other in Draki (his language of origin). This story has a slew of secondary characters many of which are delightful and really enrich the storyline. Also, I want to say so many things about the ending but I’m not a fan of spoiling things for others so all I will say is that book two is going to be so good, and I was ready for it as soon as I finished listening to this book! I absolutely can’t wait and would recommend this book to all lovers of romantic fantasy (romantasy) stories who love a seriously slow burn, gut-punching secrets, and unique magic system with equally unique world building.
The Narration: No one can convince me that Tiffany Vanlandingham is not a superwoman narrator! Not only does she bring authenticity and signature style to every story and character that she narrates but she brings an artistic voice as well. Infusing raw, gritty, human emotion into every piece of work she creates, I think it makes her standout among a world of voices. There’s not enough wonderful things I can say about this narrator and I look forward to hearing her narrate book two in the Arcane Realm Chronicles Trilogy, her and Larissa Antonioni are a power pair in the Romantasy space!🤞🤞
Thank you to the author for providing me with a review copy of A Realm of Lies and Power. This is a fantastic debut, it's immersive and pulls you into Davina and Renwick's world. Renwick is the definition of "Touch her and die" as he has been protecting her for years without her knowledge. I love Draxus and his snarkiness - who wouldn't love a snarky wyvern? Davina is a character who is more than meets the eye. I love her interactions with Renwick and Draxus. All three of these characters have awful backstories that make you feel for them. That ending though, I definitely need to continue with this series.
This was a really great debut for Larissa Antonioni and a great start to the Arcane Realm Chronicles!
There were a lot of things to love in this one - a unique magic system, a shadow mommy FMC, a dragon shifter MMC, found family, touch her and 💀, political intrigue, a murder mystery, mental health rep, “who did this to you?”, a talking wyvern companion, and so much more!
I enjoyed the world building in this one, and it was so easy to see the Arcane Realm through our main characters’ eyes.
Speaking of our main characters, both Davina and Renwick have been through some trauma before this story even truly begins. And unfortunately for them, they’re due for some more. I really appreciated Larissa’s depictions of depression and anxiety throughout the book, and her approach to these characters dealing with their grief was done beautifully as well.
I also can’t forget about Draxus! This bright orange wyvern was a delight, and I enjoyed the additional banter he brought to this book.
The romance had a nice slow burn to it, and poor Renwick fell hard and fast for Davina. But how could he not have? If you know you know… 😉👀 It was so worth the wait when these two finally let their mutual feelings ignite!
Many secrets are revealed with the action at the end of this one, and many of those leave Davina absolutely devastated. I can’t wait to see how this story continues in Book 2!
Thank you so much to Larissa Antonioni and Iris Influencer Society for the gifted copy! 🖤🐉✨
My, how happy I am to have been selected as an ARC reader for this! Although in all fairness I probably would've nagged Larissa if I hadn't because who could wait until February to read this gem??? <3
I was so excited to finally meet Renwick and Davina. I love them as characters, especially Davina, she's such a strong, amazing, and admirable FMC. Their romance is so sweet and I love how their story unfolded and honestly can't wait for more!
Larissa's prose is absolutely beautiful, it's so flowy and enjoyable and it did not throw me out of the story, not once.
Great job Larissa, I'm SO proud of you and this amazing world that you've created!
Tiffany rocked the narration that brought this book to life!
A fun adventure story that ends on a cliffhanger wanting more. The tension and he falls first so soooo good! If you like Romantasy and wyverns and shadow daddies- listen to this one!
Tiffany Vanlandingham’s performance of this book was absolute perfection! She brought me to tears on more than one occasion. The story sang under her expert narration. Can’t wait to hear book 2!
Well, well, well. This book took me by surprise. It reminds me of the fantasy books I read 10 - 15 years ago. There is a well thought out magical system and lots of different magical races and creatures mixed in a well thought out fantasy realm. The seamless shift between the different POV:s made it a smooth read for someone like me who usually don’t like books with more than one POV. It was a fun read mixed in with important topics such as self-hatred, grief, love, betrayal and friendships. But also how you can learn to trust again after being lied to.
When Davina’s parents are killed she and her sister are separated from each other and while Davina is sent to a temple, her sister is sent to an orphanage. As the years pass Davina is left to try and navigate life and all that ensues as well as the dangerous magic within herself that grows stronger and stronger.
Renwick has admired and protected Davina from a distance over the years but as the high lords assassin he can never let it get any further than that. Bound to his master he and his companion Draxus must navigate his servitude to the high lord. as well as the growing pull towards Davina.
As new murders occur throughout the city, same as Davinas parents’ murders, her and Renwick are paired together to find the killer.
I liked the way the relationship between Renwick and Davina changes throughout the story. Something about their relationship and the way it slowly builds up is *chefs kiss*! And honestly, who doesn’t love and opinionated, badass and sassy wyvern?
I am really looking forward to reading the follow up to A realm of Lies and Power!
Fantasy with political intrigue, magic, hidden identitys, betrayal, longing, messy emotions and self discovery. I love the writing style you are immediately immersed in a fast Fantasy world, there is a map ( I love a map) and a playlists that further benefis the experience. All the characters feel like friends and that makes the story so much more. I would give my life for Draxus the wyvern. I hope we will get to see more of him soon.
As someone who is a tad picky when it comes to romance and fantasy, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book much more than I was expecting to. While this may not have had the amount of action that I've read in books like the Empyrean series, I feel like the plot is interesting and complex enough that it wasn't necessary. This was the first novel in the Arcane Realm Chronicles, and I think Larissa did a fantastic job introducing us to the many characters, building the world, and explaining the relatively unique magic system. The pacing for all of these components was well done and also completed in under 400 pages (when I feel like most novels of this nature feel more drawn out because they have 200 plus extra pages). It also feels like we will be seeing a lot more action in the upcoming sequel, now that the tone and plot have been properly established.
Another aspect that I thought was extremely well-done was the romance. At first, I wasn't sure if I was going to believe the bond between Davina and Renwick, but as the story progressed the tension definitely kept building. It was an EXREMELY slow burn (all the spice was literally within the last 100 pages, and it was DEFINITELY worth the wait). The one thing about some of these fantasy/romance novels that I can't stand is the lack of sexual tension leading up to the spice. For example (and I'm in the minority here), I cannot stand Violet and Xaden from the Empyrean series. While I like them both individually, their romance just doesn't make any sense to me. However, Davina and Renwick do make sense, and I feel like their bond was properly explored (at least on a level that I personally felt comfortable with).
The last thing I really enjoyed was how instead of having the MMC being the dark, brooding shadow-daddy, it was Davina who fulfilled that role. Renwick was moody in his own way, but not in the way that Davina was. While I haven't read too many of the recent fantasy/romance novels, they all have started blending together with this popular "shadow-daddy" trope, and I really loved that it was NOT the MMC this time. It made this story stand out a bit more from the others I've read.
If anything from this review sounds appealing to you as a fantasy/romance reader, definitely give this book a shot! It does end on a cliffhanger, but the sequel is scheduled for release in early 2026, so the wait for the next installment won't be long. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I did!
When I say I am ready for Book 2, I’m in need of it yesterday. With the cliffhanger ending that A Realm of Lies and Power left me with, I just need to get a sense of how much vengeance and passion is going to consume me in the next read. This story, A Realm of Lies and Power was stunning.. stunning with its creativeness that made me feel the magic. Brought me the pain of the characters. Two souls that lost so much at such a young age. One who has been a watchful guardian.. the other believing they are worthless. And she was so wrong. Davina holds the heart of Renwick. He’s drawn to her… she’s learning to trust him. He’s known as the The Shadow Walker, The Silent Assassin, but Davina will soon learn there are so many layers to this man… perhaps he’s not what the stories have made him out to be. I was captivated by the aspects of magic in this read. The hidden secrets that were within reach, but kept hiding further and further into the dreams that haunted her. Someone was killing those closest to Davina, and she needed to find out who and why. And Renwick was not about to leave her side as she welcomed the danger to her front door. Red tear-shaped gems, a lost sister, a traitor in the mix, powerful magic, and a wyvern with humor filled the pages. And a slow burn between two tempted hearts that will have you yelling for them to just give in to what they desire. Oh.. did I mention the ending leaving me needing Book 2 right now?
Larissa’s first book is amazing! You don’t expect this sort of story flow when a budding author asks you to beta read their work.
I’m very grateful that I got to read this as a beta reader. I got to be one of the first people to read this through and can honestly say that this novel is like if Fourth Wing and From Blood & Ash had a baby.
The banter between characters is great; I loved the dialogue! The character development was great too. I loved seeing the characters become more confident.
Also: dragons 🐉
Can’t wait to see what else Larissa comes up with!!
Gut rating: ⭐⭐ CAWPILE rating: TBD Spice: Open door ARC publication date: March 31st 2026

My synopsis When 26yo orphan Davina Nightdale finds a dead man covered in jagged runes and pulsing black magic, she recognises eerie similarities to her parent's unsolved murder 16 years ago. Especially with the taunting notes the killer leaves behind addressed to her.
With Davina intimately tied to the case, the High Lord forces her to investigate alongside his fearsome Shadow Walker Renwick Ashshard, the Silent Assassin and dragon shifter. Motivated by the promise of his freedom, Renwick is eager to take the case, especially as it allows him to draw closer to the "female" he's been obsessed with and secretly protecting. As they follow the trail of bodies, can they uncover the killer's plans while keeping their own dark secrets and desires hidden?
My review A creative world that just needed a bit more polish and character consistency.
This debut offers a really unique intersection of Greek mythology, Fae creatures, and elemental powers backed up by great world-building. I also loved the idea of a mystery-driven Romantasy!
However, the execution struggled with some common debut hurdles. The writing felt overly intense even in casual scenes, and I found myself wishing for more showing rather than telling.
Davina is a great FMC with a stubborn, independent nature that made her fun to follow. I also loved the sassy wyvern Draxus! Unfortunately Renwick was not a strong MMC. Although described as a fearsome assassin/shadow wielder/dragon shifter, we never saw the action to back that up. Instead he spent the whole book following Davina around like a puppy. Honestly, this would have been a stronger book without Renwick's POV, as his constant lustful internal monologue and stalker obsession with Davina (painting his room the color of her eyes?!) killed the romance.
Despite Renwick's constant lust, there was no real chemistry, with their relationship mostly based on his obsession and her trauma. The first intimacy scene (in the bathtub) almost made me DNF. It was really uncomfortable, with him taking advantage of her vulnerability. Consent was a big issue too in other scenes. I'm never a fan of the fated mates trope because it's so often used to force intimacy and fake chemistry instead of allowing for the gradual development of feelings.
Disappointingly, the mystery element quickly took a backseat. For a High Lord’s favored assassin, Renwick felt surprisingly uninterested in the investigation, focusing more on his obsession with Davinia with only one real clue chasing scene. The (random) side characters summed it up well: "Honestly, for being the high lord’s favored assassin, you’re terrible at sleuthing.”
Side characters appeared and disappeared with little thought. I was particularly disappointed with the sudden investigation team assembled close to the end of the book consisting of completely unknown side characters. With such high stakes, there needed to be a much stronger foundation of trust for the dynamic to be believable. As a result, the rapid fire betrayals were predictable and underwhelming.
With thanks to the Publishers and NetGalley for providing me with this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Trigger warnings: Death of parent, death, murder, injury detail, violence, stalking, blood, self harm, sexual content, fire injury, suicidal thoughts, sexual harassment, sexual assault, panic attack, grief, child abuse, domestic abuse, dementia, gaslighting, misogyny, abandonment, alcohol, cursing, animal cruelty, confinement, war, torture
I enjoyed this book, it has a great world-building (different realms), lots of different types of magical creatures, magic, fated mates. This book has everything to be amazing. Although, I think there is one thing which about the story contains too much - betrayal. The last around 25% of the book is just about this, poor Davina (and we as a readers) didn't have enough time to recover from one, because the next one just occurs. At the end, I just rolled my eyes...
Davina is our FMC, she is young, grown up separated from her sister, as she was sent to an orphanage, while Davina was grown up under Priestess's under protective wings, as their parents was murdered. She had a rough life, hasn't trust anyone (except two persons, ). She is in the focus (or target even) of a murder mystery, everyone who is close to her were murdered, or get hurt badly. I would push everyone away from me in the same situation. I can't blame her.
Renwick is our MMC, the high lord's assassin, the shadow walker (no,he hasn't got shadow magic, skill or anything similar - FINALLY). He is forced to work in the service of the lord. He is someone who is enjoying his work (if the target deserves it), but still he has a second (or maybe third) life in the background, not even he is obsessed with Davina for years and does anything that he can do to keep her safe, but he saves other innocent lifes as well. And no one knows about it. (At this point, Azriel could learn from him tbh).
The romance is something I have a little bit of problem. I see that they have a little chemistry, but the focus is on the 'little'. I think the betrayals, the lack of self-confidence, the constant doubt in herself and her magic took away that focus from a lot of other things, for example the chemistry between them. As it is a slow burn romantasy, you won't see any spice in the first 80% of the book, there are a little banter before that, but not much. Which is not an issue, as it is gives us, what is says - slow burn.
The story ends with a HUGE cliffhanger in multiple threads. I don't know what will happen with Davina what happened with Renwick, or Emyr and the others (friends of Davina).["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
A dark, enthralling fantasy romance with magic, mystery, and slow burn tension A Realm of Lies and Power is the first book in the Arcane Realm Chronicles trilogy, set in a dark, magic-infused world where deities, political intrigue, and ancient secrets shape the fate of its people. The story primarily unfolds in the Arcane Realm, one of five realms in the world, each with its own unique culture, magic, and conflicts. The story follows Davina, a trauma haunted healer at the Temple of Asterin. She stumbles upon a murder on the anniversary of her parents death. The crime is marked by the same runes that destroyed her family sixteen years earlier. When she is forced to confront the high lord, Davina finds herself entangled with Renwick. He is the high lord's infamous assassin and he has been secretly protecting her for years! The world building in this book is rich! Sketched before us is a dark but beautiful world. The world has big contrasts, elegant temples and manors vs crumbling street and dark alleys. The realm's deities, political faction and magical hierarchy are very detailed and give the world depth. Davina is a strong willed resourceful individual. Her struggles to reconcile her healing magic with the darkness inside her makes her relatable and complex. She is not perfect, she is flawed, but that makes her more real. Renwick is a mysterious, lethal assassin. Often he is seen as a weapon, not a man. He is obsessed with Davina, what shows his softer side. The slow burn tension between them is off the charts. The push and pull between these two... The mystery in this book keeps you guessing. The runes, magic and political intrigue that surrounds the murder where the books starts off with add layers of suspense to it. Who is behind the murders and why.... Because this book has such a rich world building the beginning of the book can feel a bit slow, but you will be rewarded when you get through the initial world building part!
A story must always contain something different, to prevent the narrative from becoming monotonous.
Here we have a thorny situation set in a land divided into four realms: the Arcane Realm, the Light Realm, the Wildings Realm and the Lost Realm.
The story unfolds in the Arcane Realm, and our female lead is nothing more than a pawn in a power game that has been going on for far too long...
Davina Nightdale was about ten years old when her idyll came to an end, and sixteen years have passed since she inflicted a painful punishment on herself to spare anyone else from harm.
She had to grow up quickly, especially when she was taken away from home and placed in the care of the Goddess of Life and Death's Temple, to the point where she no longer trusted anyone except Priestess Lillian and her best friend Emmett, who lived outside the sanctuary.
On the sly, without being seen, there is the faithful dog of the High Lord of Onyx City, the Shadow Walker, who has indeed been tasked by his ‘master’ with gathering information about her, but after spending so long acting as her guardian, his main desire is simply to protect her👀
As if by some kind of warning or omen, strange and alarming events begin to unfold, forcing Renwick to reveal his true identity to the girl and, together with her, report to High Lord Arwen. As if the situation could not possibly get any worse, the High Lord tasks MCs with investigating these symbolic crimes, implying that there will be no escape from this assignment😶🌫️
With its blend of buried secrets, silent penances and the kind of closeness that’s bound to lead to trouble, this is the perfect combination of dark high fantasy and crime novel😍
Summary (No Spoilers): A guarded heroine has spent years trying to recover from her parents' murder and keep her dark magic at bay until another death 16 years later brings everything back up to the surface. This time she can’t avoid it, as the High Lord’s assassin has just been assigned to become her living shadow, forcing them together as political tensions rise and ancient powers are awakened. Pursuing powerful enemies and unraveling the truth behind the mysterious murders, they must decide if love can triumph over duty.
What I Loved: I loved how absolutely obsessed he was with her from the very beginning. The relationship between the wyvern, the MMC and FMC was on point. The found family was really genuine and believable.
What Could Be Stronger: I do feel like sometimes it was difficult to track the different forms of magic and how the magic system worked. There were some side characters I wanted more from, while I am sure that some of these characters will be more fully developed in the 2nd book, I do feel like some had more in their story for this book.
Final Thoughts: Arcane Realm Chronicles is perfect for readers who crave a cozy gaslight fantasy world with devastating devotion and morally gray heroes who would do anything to protect those they love.
Quotes: “Who. The fuck. Touched you. ” “If I haven't made myself perfectly clear, you will pack your bags and move in with me willingin or I'll throw you over my shoulder and carry you out. ” “Fine, I'll let it go, but only because I love the sound of my name on your lips. ” “A male wants something to hold onto as he fucks you into oblivion.
This book was EVERYTHING and more! I didn’t know what to expect but it blew me out of the water. This book has so many good parts: murder mystery, unraveling secrets from the past, coming into your power, found family, and of course slow burn fated mates. But the best part? SHE is the shadow mommy! Take all of that and add in wyverns, dragons and other shifters, elves, trolls, and any other magical creature you can think of, and you get an amazing book. There were so many plot twists I didn’t expect, and that ending, WHAT!?!? 😲I really didn’t see that coming.
I adored and felt for our FMC Davina. She’s been through so much with her parents dying young, not knowing where her sister is, and dealing with how to control her magic. With all this, it’s hard for her to trust, but as time goes on she gets stronger and learns how to trust people. I love the growth she has. And I mean, a shadow mommy, who doesn’t love that?
Our MMC is Renwick, this so-called broody assassin, but he holds many secrets about who he really is and why he does what he does. The way he’s protective, encouraging, and cares for Davina is so sweet and heartfelt. And he does one of my favorite micro tropes, bathes her! Oh, and his best friend is Draxus, a wyvern he can openly communicate with! Let me tell you, I melted!
The world building and character building in this is phenomenal. You can just imagine yourself there right next to the characters.
Thank you @authorlarissawrites & @irisinfluencersociety for gifting me this ARC for an honest review!
As someone who primarily only reads fantasy revolving around the fae, this was a fun change! So many unique, dynamic characters were brought to life, all different types of magical creatures with varying skills, personalities, and backgrounds made for a melting pot of beings living in a realm under the rule of an evil Lord and being haunted by dark magic lurking around the corner.
Davina had a tragic childhood and upbringing, but rose from the ashes like a phoenix, learning so much about herself and her magic. Renwick had to face so many battles & struggles as a child just to be enslaved by the evil Lord, but he refused to let that break him. Individually they're forces to be reckoned with, but together their bond only strengthens and nothing will stop them from being together and saving those who need it. Their banter is hilarious, their emotions powerful, and their "escapades" are 🔥🙌
I also have to give a shout out to Draxus who adds comedic relief but also swoops in to assist with saving the day (it helps that it's also a nice treat for him). He's an addition to the family they no longer had, but desperately needed.
I have to stop here before I start spitting out endless spoilers - I could talk about this for days 🤣 I've only read the first book, but I already know The Arcane Realm Chronicles will be one of my favorite fantasy series! I can't wait to dive into book 2! 😍
