Last Dispatch is a highly enjoyable dinosaur/creature survival thriller about a classified military operation that went horribly awry. The writing is excellent, especially for the genre. The characters are complicated, dynamic and self sacrificing. The plot is well developed and executed even better. I am genuinely surprised just how good Last Dispatch is. This is the character driven survival thriller at its best! Overall, 5/5 stars! I was expecting a wild, bloody ride but got much more than expected. Highly recommended for fans of dinosaur horror, creature horror and tense sci-fi thrillers! This book will truly appeal to a huge cross section of readers!
Once again it has happened the government screws up. This time it is in a little country in Southeast Asia that nobody knows about. As far as these kind of stories go this one was pretty good. There are minimal number of characters in the story, but you should find them interesting. The man in charge is of course not very likeable, but he at least doesn't try to kill everybody at once. There is plenty of action in this story and most of it comes from the female characters. If you like a story that will grab and not let go until the end. Then give this one a read
This is a book that’s beyond well done! The characters are so exquisitely developed, that you know, as you’re nearing the end of the story, that you will miss them. That you will think about them as if they were real people, even though they’re not. That you will celebrate the survivors, and mourn the dead…….most of them, anyway. Now that’s a BOOK!! If you’re looking for a story that grabs onto you and doesn’t let go, this is for you. Buckle up!! 🦖🦕👍
One of the better Dinosaur Survival stories I've read
Penn did a really good job. This one was mire of a people, character driven story than a dino thriller but just as good if not better. Really rich characters and storyline. We (humans), jyst can't seem to get it right when dealing with what we don't know about nature. No matter how many times it goes wrong, we keep trying to reinventing that wheel.
I highlight and save sentences for paragraphs that I think are particularly profound or well written. Or both. Some books I never highlight anything, which isn't say they are bad books just they never reach that level in my opinion. In this book I highlighted a lot. Both because I thought it was profound and because I thought it was well written.
I didn't expect this book to be much. But it's a really good tale: well- written, characters you care deeply about, a solid plot with lots of action, great dialogue. Can't wait to read more of this series and this author, who is new to me. 12/ 10, highly recommend!
A journalist, soldier, former prisoner, and some others found along the way, trek through Dinosaur infested jungle trying to get the truth out of the greatest government cover up in history.
This is not a creature feature in the sense the only point to the story is there are dinosaurs. Could not put it down. I have to read more by this author. I have a feeling any topic she chooses will be a terrific read.
Think it's just another dinosaur story? Think again. If you think you've read something like this, Think again. Do yourself a favor and read this book.
This is a captivating read that delves into some truly thought-provoking themes. Penn's writing style is both engaging and fluid, making it easy to get lost in the narrative. The characters are well-developed and feel authentic, each with their own complexities and motivations that drive the story forward in compelling ways. While the plot is generally strong and keeps you turning pages, there were a few moments where the pacing felt a little uneven, or a particular subplot didn't quite land with the same impact as the others. However, these minor quibbles don't detract significantly from the overall experience. The book's strengths, particularly its unique premise and emotional depth, shine through.
