Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, and his verse, short stories, and novels were acclaimed—or panned—for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and unnatural contemplation. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla.

আমার লালরঙের অধ্যায় প্রকাশনীর ল্যাবরেটরিটা বইনগর থেকে গিফ্টাইছিলো। দেখলাম রকো সুন্দর করে এর সামারি লিখছে। আমার আর লেখার কি দরকার!

রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের ‘তিনসঙ্গী' গ্রন্থের শেষ গল্প হল 'ল্যাবরেটরি'।
এটি আনন্দবাজার পত্রিকার শারদীয় সংখ্যায় ১৩৪৭ সালে ১৫ আশ্বিন প্রকাশিত হয়। অনেক সমালোচক রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ করেছিলেন যে, তাঁর সাহিত্যে আধুনিক জীবনের প্রখর বাস্তবতা প্রতিফলিত হয়নি।
কিন্তু আমাদের আলোচ্য ‘তিনসঙ্গী’র তিনটি গল্পেই তিনি প্রখর আধুনিকতার নিদর্শন রেখেছেন। তিনি এখানে বিষয়গত, চরিত্রগত এবং আঙ্গিকগত সমস্ত দিক থেকেই আধুনিকতার উপস্থাপন ঘটিয়েছেন। 'ল্যাবরেটরি' গল্পে সোহিনী চরিত্রের মধ্যে আমরা বিশেষভাবে আধুনিকতার ছাপ দেখি।
তবে লেখকের মনে হয়েছিল 'সোহিনীকে সকলে হয়তো বুঝতে পারবে না, সে একেবারে এখনকার যুগের সাদায়-কালোয় মিশানো খংাটি রিয়ালিজম, অথচ তলায় অন্তঃসলিলার মতো আইডিয়ালিজম্‌ই হলো সোহিনীর প্রকৃত স্বরূপ। গল্পে সোহিনীর মনস্তাত্ত্বিকতারই উদ্ঘাটন রয়েছে সমগ্র কাহিনি জুড়ে।

ল্যাবরেটরি একটি আধুনিক মনোভঙ্গির ছোটগল্প, যেখানে বিজ্ঞানের অগ্রগতির পাশাপাশি নারীচরিত্রের অন্তর্দ্বন্দ্ব এবং নৈতিকতার প্রশ্ন বড় করে ওঠে। গল্পটিতে নারী স্বাধীনতার প্রশ্ন, বিজ্ঞানচর্চার উদ্দেশ্য এবং সম্পর্কের জটিলতা একসঙ্গে গেঁথে যায় ।
