I really enjoyed this story and was genuinely impressed by how much Ivy Locke packed into just 38 pages. It delivers sapphic Bring It On energy with strong Buffy vibes, while also creating a fresh vampire mythology and exploring themes of prejudice, identity, and empathy.
The vampire lore is one of the most interesting parts of the story. Instead of ancient curses or supernatural origins, vampirism begins when a man eats a vampire bat, his blood mutates, and infected donations spread the condition through the blood supply. The result is a world where vampires are integrated into society but still face fear and discrimination. Details like synthetic blood substitutes and silver-coated weapons, chains, nets, and even dust as weapons make the world feel fully realised despite the novella length.
Jessica is an immediately sympathetic heroine. After surviving leukemia thanks to a blood transfusion, she becomes a vampire through no choice of her own and is now trying to live a normal college life as a cheerleader. Watching her navigate a world where some people see her as a monster adds real emotional weight to the story.
Britney's journey surprised me. She begins the story openly resentful of vampires, believing they have advantages they haven't earned and actively advocating against them. It takes witnessing Jessica being harassed, attacked, and nearly killed by three human men for her to begin understanding the reality of what vampires face. The parallels to the treatment of LGBTQ+ and trans people are clear, and the story handles those themes thoughtfully, showing how empathy often develops when people are confronted with the humanity of those they have judged.
This worked perfectly for me because I love stories that blend familiar tropes into something fresh. Between the cheerleading setting, the vampire politics, the social commentary, and the developing romance, there was always something interesting happening. I was particularly impressed by how naturally all of these elements fit together without any of them overwhelming the story.
This is for readers who enjoy sapphic paranormal romance, modern vampire stories, Buffy and Bring it On-inspired vibes, and stories that explore prejudice and acceptance through speculative fiction. If you like your romance with a side of social commentary and creative world-building, this is well worth picking up.
The romance between Jessica and Britney develops into a sweet happy-for-now ending, and the level of spice fits the story perfectly without taking over. More than anything, this novella left me wanting to spend more time in this world—and that's probably the highest compliment I can give a story this short.
I read the story Fly For Me by Ivy Locke. I loved this short and spicy sapphic vampire romance and can’t wait for the full length novel. This story felt very well rounded and fleshed out and was the perfect afternoon (or midnight!) read. In this story vampires came to be after someone bit the head off a bat and became infected. The infected person donated blood and plasma and the vampirism spread to others. Not all the usual tropes apply to these vampires as they are able to withstand sunlight. But they do need to drink blood and a synthetic blood drink called H8 was developed. The story centers around rival college cheerleaders in Florida and one is a vampire and the other a human. This is an enemies to lovers trope and was full of snarky banter. I really enjoyed the witty dialogue and found myself laughing out loud. The spice was on point and well done. This story is an awesome addition to Wicked Little Whispers: A Sapphic Paranormal Charity Anthology. I will definitely be reading more of Ivy Locke’s work. Thank you for the ARC.
I received an advanced copy of this book. I’m so glad I did.
I ready “Fly For Me” By: Ivy Locke
This was an amazing vampire romance. I love the authors, tone, her quick wit and snarky style of writing. The characters were beautifully created, thought of and written. I can’t say enough good things about this book. I do not want to give any major spoilers.
This was about two college cheerleaders, who absolutely despise one another and somehow come together. I have nothing bad to say about this book only that I wish it was longer. I just want to read more about Britney and Jessica. Jessica was so wonderfully written. She is snarky and just reading her thoughts literally had me laughing out loud. She’s fearless, gentle and soft. Britney is your typical influenced cheerleader who suddenly discovers that she has her own voice and opinions. This was a great anthology and I highly recommend. If you love romantasy, this is for you.
I read Fly for me that is part of the anthology Wicked little Whispers. A story that follows Jessica. A vampire cheerleader and Britney her human cheerleader rival. Jessica has spent years enduring Britney's anti vampire propaganda. Britney sees vampires as cheaters who don't belong in the sport. She changes her mind when she sees Jessica being attacked by vampire hunters. I think is is a testament to Ivy her skills in crafting a satisfying story despite it being a short story. It doesn't feel incomplete, what I often think on short stories. The writing is fast paced and it keeps you hooked from the first page. I enjoyed reading about Jessica and Britney going from enemies to lovers. The banter between these two is sharp and witty. I also liked the concept of the cheerleading in combination with vampires. It opens up a lot of different options. I'm looking forward to this short story turning into a full length novel.
I got to ARC read Fly for Me by Ivy Locke, which was such a fun, campy little story included in the anthology. Honestly, it gave major Bring It On vibes…if the rival cheerleaders were gay and one of them was a vampire 😂 I’m always a sucker for rivals-to-lovers, forced proximity, and paranormal romance, so this ended up being the perfect quick read for me. But underneath all the vampire drama and fun spice, the story was very relevant and reflected real prejudice, fear, and misinformation commonly directed at the queer community. I loved watching Britney slowly start questioning the biases she’d always accepted as truth, and the chemistry between Britney and Jessica was the icing on the cake.
I received an advanced copy of Ivy Locke’s Fly For Me and it sucked me right in! I LOVED it. I couldn’t put it down.
The story starts out with a hilarious fork incident, takes the reader to the skies, and doesn’t stop.
Soon we have a vamp and human cheering on the same squad, which blossoms into a deeper, richer story. I’m eager to see how the rest of the plot develops into a full-length novel and how some of the other characters play into it all. I’m in two hardcore romantasy book clubs and they are going to devour this. Highly recommend adding this to your tbr!!!
Imagine watching the bring it on movies (in this case I’d say Bring it On: in it to win it) and the two rival cheerleaders end up being the lovers! While only 40 pages this story was packed with a punch and never had a dull moment. The cheerleader aspect, the vampire lore, & the love story all just fit together making this beautiful sapphic story.
I read an ARC of Love After The World Ends by Delilah Throne from this anthology and it is theeee cutestttt sapphic novella ever. This was actually so wholesome, who knew a zombie romance could be so so cute. I love this couple so much, if it’s meant to be it will be 🫶🏼🥲 gimme more of them.
Heavy on the “if still love you if you were a worm vibes” 🙂↕️
Full better review to come once this anthology is out and I can read everything xoxo
I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of Fly for Me by Ivy Locke and loved it!
I'm a big fan of paranormal books, vampires especially so I was excited to read this one and the banter was such a great addition because it made me lol a couple times!
I have no idea how Ivy was able to provide such an amazing story in so few pages but it grabbed my attention and didnt let go! I cant wait to read the rest of these stories and more from Ivy!
So thankful I received Fly For Me by Ivy Locke early for a review!
I love vampires and paranormal characters. The plot was really good and kept my attention the whole time. I can’t believe this was told in so little pages! It didn’t leave me feeling like it wasn’t enough. But I honestly would have kept reading if there was more. My cheeks hurt from laughing as well and I definitely needed that after the dark stuff I’ve been reading lately. Definitely recommend this one!
Not my typical genre, but I was surprised by how quickly it drew me in. I had a little trouble grasping the mechanics of the magic but it wasn’t enough to interrupt my enjoyment of the read. Fun writing. Could be fun to explore the commentary and modern political parallels in a book club type setting.
This is a short story with a big heart and I really enjoyed reading it. I love the spunk of the main character. Who knew cheerleading was so cutthroat? ;)
Thank you so much for the opportunity to get to ARC read this fun short story. Ivy you are remarkable and I can’t wait to see what is next!
ARC Review:
First of all, one of the main characters is named Britney Jean, so obviously this was already a win for me. The story felt light at times while still carrying so much emotional depth underneath. I loved the sapphic take on vampire romance, and the realization at the end was beautifully handled.
