Samuel Sattin is an American writer. His books include the multi-volume Unico series for Scholastic Graphix, Buzzing, Side Quest, The Silent End, and (as co-author) both A Kids Guide to Anime and Manga and The Essential Anime Guide: 50 Iconic Films, Standout Series, and Cult Masterpieces. He has also adapted the Academy Award-nominated films WolfWalkers, Song of the Sea, and The Secret of Kells to the graphic novel format. He graduated with an MFA in comics from the California College of the Arts and works as a studio writer for Schulz Creative Associates, aka Snoopy Central. Samuel resides with his wife in Northern California, and travels frequently to Japan.

Sometimes I can only frown upon books that are chosen to be adapted into graphic novels because I just don't see a reason for it. Not this time, though. This time I was cheering as soon as I heard the announcement and saw the stunning cover. Legends & Lattes is one of my favorite books of all time and the very definition of a comfort read for me. To be able to experience this story in a different format gives me all the happiness in the world, especially since the adapter and the illustrators did such a fantastic job here. If you don't know: this is the story of the orc Viv who is leaving her adventurer life behind to open a coffee shop in the city of Thune. Nobody has ever heard of coffee there, but she meets the right people and they figure it out together. It's a very low stakes story, more or less just a step-by-step guide to starting a business, but it's very dear to me because of its coziness and wholesome characters. It was lovely to see all of them get illustrated and their designs were top notch. It was super interesting to see the different fantasy races come to life and while we're at it: did you see the ratkin Thimble on the cover? He is the absolute cutest being on the planet! Other favorites of mine include Tandri and the giant teleporting cat. The page where the cat first showed up really cracked me up and it just adds to the story to see the characters' facial expression in situations like this one. The adaptation is very faithful to the original novel and I don't see a reason why lovers of the books wouldn't enjoy this graphic novel. At the same time this could be a perfect introduction to the world too. I think I feel cozier when picking up the novel and reading it for a few hours than quickly flipping through the pages of the graphic novel, but this story simply makes me happy in every format. Let's hope next is an animated movie or something like that. ❤️☕🥐

the adaption in this graphic novel followed the original book to a TEE. it somehow managed to fit literally the whole book in there with excellent pacing. the panels also highlighted the theme of recreating yourself & the foreshadowing of a certain...calamity...which were bonuses for me! for a lover of legends & lattes, this is THE trip down memory lane ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

I always thought this book could adapt well into a graphic novel and this did a decent job of it! It has a cozy, heartwarming style reminiscent of having a cup of a tea on a rainy day. While it was nice to see this story come to life visually, it did feel choppy at times transitioning from one scene to another. I read the book a while ago so i don’t remember everything, but it felt like we barely scraped the surface getting to know the characters, getting a sense of setting and the little bit of plot present in a cozy fantasy. Overall it was fun for a visual experience, but the novel is definitely a better all round story experience.

This was easily one of the best books I’ve read this year! I DNFed the original book because it was a little too slow and didn’t have stakes high enough to keep my interest, but I truly believe that Legends and Lattes was meant to be enjoyed in the graphic novel form. A plot that felt mundane and endless in the book became cozy and warm in the graphic novel and kept chugging along at the perfect pace. The visualisation of the characters was brilliantly done, my favourite being Thimble, which actually is the same as with the original book. Viv’s journey was incredibly portrayed, with nuances explored through the art and less through explicit description, and the character development was amazingly evident while staying realistic. The family and friendships she finds by the end and the story’s simple message of courage and kindness will stay with me for a long time.

110% recommend this on a bad day to leave you feeling cozy, safe, less alone and a little more convinced that there is goodness in the world.

Omg I loved this so much!! Legends and Lattes are my favourite cozy fantasy book, and when I saw it was being published as a graphic novel, you know I had to get it! So happy when I saw they had it on Netgalley, and it was just as good as I thought it was gonna be. The art style is so pretty, and can pretty much be summed up as ”cozy”. The colours, brush strokes, so soft and delicate. And the characters where exactly how I pictured them in my head. It was so much fun revisiting this world, and my favourites, Viv, Tandri, Cal and Thimble. Especially Thimble 🐭♥️ Highly recommend to all fans of Legends and Lattes (obviously, and anyone who loves graphic novels, and cozy tales. Fingers crossed the other books will become graphic novels as well!

I was sure I couldn’t love Legends and Lattes more, but this graphic novel proved me wrong! This is a beautiful adaptation of Travis Baldree’s book. Every character looks exactly how I first pictured them. Maybe better. Cal? Love how his character is drawn. And THIMBLE!! Again, I did think this could make the story any better but my goodness, if you want a cute and heart-warming cozy fantasy with DND vibes and wonderful art, this is it. Thank you Ten Speed Graphic for the gifted egalley! I can’t wait to get my grubby hands on a physical copy in December!

PS I want a direcat now. Maybe an Amity plushie will do.

I haven’t read the novel version of legends and lattes because cozy fantasy doesn’t really appeal to me as a genre. However, with that said, I do think the story really worked as a graphic novel. The artwork was amazing and the story was easy to read.

I definitely recommend picking up this graphic novel when it comes out.

I’ve been wanting to read Legends & Lattes for years, but I never got around to it. Or rather, I was never really in the right mood for it. So when I saw there was a graphic novel adaptation, I thought it might be a better fit for me.

While I liked the art style, colors, and character designs, I found the story a bit lacking. Not much really happens, and the transitions between scenes often felt abrupt. I understand that graphic novels handle scene changes differently than prose, where it’s easier to indicate when one scene ends and another begins, but I still found it confusing at times. I would turn the page and suddenly find myself in a completely different scene without much context. I also struggled to connect with the characters because their development felt quite shallow.

Overall, the graphic novel was visually appealing, but it didn’t give me enough time to become invested in either the story or the characters.

This is exactly how this story should have been told in the first place. Legends & Lattes was meant for the graphic novel format!

The art was excellent! One part I struggled within reading the novel is the fact that I have not played/consumed enough d&d to know what characters looked like/stereotypes, some lingo, etc. It was so nice to have this visualization of each character.

I was believe the pacing to be better in this format. The novel was a quick read, but even then some parts dragged (go to place a, then b, then back to a, on and on). In this form the narrative did not linger, forcing the reader to clue into what was going on both in the dialogue and visuals.

This was a lovely reimagining of this book, and I would enjoy seeing the rest of the series translated likewise.

I loved this book when I read it a few years ago, so I was excited to revisit it in this new format and oh! my! goodness! This story was MADE for graphic novel, it just adapted so perfectly! The art was gorgeous, the coffee shop looked so cozy, I loved the way it was all brought to life. Highly recommend picking this up, and I wonder if people who found the novel “too cozy” might like this version better

As a coffee lover, I thoroughly enjoyed Legends & Lattes: The Graphic Novel. This cozy fantasy is a heartwarming story about friendship, love, community, and having the courage to start over and build a new life. The illustrations were absolutely charming and brought the story to life beautifully. Every character felt unique and delightful, but Thimble completely stole my heart, I would die for that little cinnamon roll. Warm, comforting, and full of charm, this was the perfect cozy fantasy read.

I read Legends and Lattes last year and ADORED it. I was originally drawn into the character design of the cover and when I found out there would be a graphic novel adaptation I was sat! The artwork in this was amazingly drawn and fit the characters so well. I loved the cute moments too.

What a fabulous graphic novel! The characters, the colors, the setting, the atmosphere... all of it was absolutely GORGEOUS!

I loved every aspect of the artwork in here, the way everything came together to create such a cozy atmosphere and looked beautiful. I haven't read the full novel of Legends & Lattes (yet) because I would keep picking it up and putting it down due to struggling with imagining how the characters actually looked and getting confused at the start, so this adaptation made it easy to actually see them! I think the art really did bring the story to life and, as a broken record, was stunning and impressive in conveying atmosphere and emotions as much as it did.

I definitely will be reading the novel version because of how this adaptation gave me an easy rundown of the plot. Of course, I'll know what happens, but I feel like the graphic novel, given the format/nature of it, wasn't able to deliver the full depth and character relationships I ached for. I definitely got the found family idea and the romance between Viv and Tandri, but I do want to get to know every character's complexity a bit more and truly feel the emotions and connections there (though, again, the graphic novel did a good job of showing them!).

The story itself was cozy, heartfelt, and hopeful all in one, with enough stakes to keep me interested in what would happen and rooting for the characters along the way. Watching Viv start over for herself, leaving behind a life of violence because that's not who she wants to be (and starting a cozy little coffee shop/bakery to boot (shoutout to Thimble!)) was endearing. I cared about her character and loved how Tandri was also supporting Viv, pushing her to stick to her 'new' values and not resort to violence just because others think that's an easy way to solve her problems in the new town. I also loved how Tandri was so supportive of the business as a whole, always willing to help. Viv and Tandri's relationship was sweet, though I really want to get more of Tandri's background/character and why Viv falls for her more in the full novel.

I thought the 'mysterious' Scalvert's stone was an interesting element of the story, and I absolutely adored how that plot point played out! The ending was super cute as a whole, and I'm all for a found family trope and the side characters in this one.

I'd absolutely recommend this graphic novel; it's beautiful, conveys an impressive amount of emotion (even if the novel might naturally give more depth/complexity), and made me feel so much more equipped to imagine these characters and the setting as I plan to pick up the full novel!

I think I'm one of the last people to join the Legends and Lattes club. I had tried to read the novel when it first came out but dnf'd quite early on. I'm glad that I got to read the graphic novel of it though.

Super cute and charming, this plot revolves around an orc who gives up being a warrior to try her hand at running a coffee shop. There is not much depth to the characters or the plot, but it is a cozy fantasy that is easy to read and might appeal to many people who are looking for something light and fun.

I absolutely ADORE the novel series for this and I was so so excited to see it would be getting its own graphic novel glow up treatment. Seriously aside of making it a movie or tv show? This is the next best thing for my visual loving heart.
The artwork is so cute and matches the vibes perfectly. It’s telling the story through the artwork plus dialogue so if you’re unable to get through a novel format this is a perfect alternative.
And bonus points for the sapphic representation not being its usual “toxic” and it being a cute soft read.
Cannot wait to purchase a physical copy for our collection at home!

I had not read the original as it was too low stakes for me but the graphic novel adaptation was just perfect. The art was beautiful and did justice to the characters and the story.

Whether you have read the original or not, this adaptation is a must and easy read. I was hooked and finished it in a day. Hoping to see the rest of the series adapted as a graphic novel as well.

I have wanted to read Legends and Latte but never actually got around to it so I was excited when I got approved for this. I really adored the art style and the characters and thought this was an adorable cozy fantasy. Thistle is my precious baby and I love him so much. He may not have been on page a whole lot but when he was it brought me a lot of joy. He’s just a little guy who wants to bake cute little pastries and drink coffee. I do recommend this if you love cozy fantasy with a pretty art style and a great cast of characters.

I didn't think it was possible for Legends & Lattes to get any cozier, but somehow the graphic novel manages exactly that.

This adaptation stays incredibly faithful to the original story while bringing the world to life in a whole new way. The artwork is absolutely gorgeous and adds so much warmth, personality, and emotion to scenes I already loved. Seeing Viv, Tandri, and the coffee shop itself illustrated made the story feel even more immersive.

One of my biggest concerns when picking up graphic novel adaptations is whether they'll capture what made me love the original in the first place. In this case, it absolutely does. It keeps all the charm, heart, and cozy atmosphere that made Legends & Lattes such a beloved read.

I don't even own a physical copy of the original novel, but I will definitely be purchasing a copy of this graphic novel when it releases.

As a huge fan of Legends & Lattes, I was incredibly excited about the graphic novel adaptation and, overall, I wasn’t disappointed. Even at first glance, it’s clear just how much care has gone into the visual design. The illustrations brilliantly capture the cosy, warm atmosphere of the story and bring Viv’s world and her café to life in a way all of their own. The colour palette in particular, with its soft, muted tones, creates exactly the cosy feeling I already knew from the novel - almost as if you were sitting in the café yourself with a cup of coffee on a rainy afternoon.

For me, the greatest strength of this adaptation clearly lies in its visual realisation. Finally seeing the characters brought to life was a real highlight. The various fantasy races and characters in particular benefit enormously from now being illustrated. Characters like Tandri or the lovable ratkin Thimble have been brought to life with great charm and perfectly matched (or even surpassed!) the feeling I had whilst reading the novel. Thimble in particular steals the show in many scenes and is one of the cutest characters I’ve seen in a graphic novel for a long time. Amity and the giant cat-creature also provide some of the funniest and most memorable moments through their portrayal.

The illustrations are compelling not only for their characters, but also for their atmosphere. The café looks so inviting and cosy that, whilst reading, I found myself wishing on several occasions that this place really existed. The lovingly designed interiors, the warm lighting and the intricately drawn coffee specialities and pastries bring the world to life. Some panels are veritable little works of art, whose lighting and colour scheme immediately catch the eye. Even though many scenes take place in the same location, the dynamic perspectives and the characters’ expressive facial expressions ensure that the depiction never feels monotonous.

I also found the way the images convey emotions particularly successful. Many humorous or touching moments gain significantly in impact thanks to the characters’ facial expressions. Scenes that were already charming in the novel take on an additional charm here through the visual medium. The graphic novel offers an excellent entry point, particularly for readers who find it difficult to visualise fantasy worlds or certain role-playing clichés.

Despite all the enthusiasm, however, the limitations of the format are also apparent. The plot feels a bit disjointed in places, and some transitions between scenes could have been smoother. I also occasionally felt that the story only scratches the surface of its characters. Whilst the novel offers more scope for character development, inner thoughts and small details, the graphic novel has to condense a great deal. Readers with no prior knowledge, in particular, may (!) therefore find it difficult at first to form a deeper connection with the characters.

At the same time, however, the narrative also benefits from this streamlining. Some passages that felt a bit long-winded in the novel take on a more pleasant pace here. The story remains constantly in motion and makes effective use of the combination of dialogue and images to convey information. This creates a flow that fits perfectly with the light and relaxed mood of the plot.

Overall, I find Legends & Lattes: The Graphic Novel to be an extremely successful adaptation, which really shines thanks to its illustrations and atmosphere. Whilst it doesn’t entirely replace the novel - as some details and emotional nuances are lost - it offers a wonderful new way to experience this story. For fans of the original, it is a loving reinterpretation that brings familiar characters and places to life. At the same time, it is also an excellent introduction for readers who prefer visual media. Above all, however, this graphic novel demonstrates just how perfectly the cosy world of Legends & Lattes lends itself to graphic storytelling: It leaves you wanting more adaptations of the series.

A cozy and heartwarming medieval fantasy indeed!

I haven't read the Legends and Lattes novel by Travis Baldree. I was interested enough to consider reading it but perhaps my moving away from the fantasy genre and aversion to online book "sensations" kept me from actually doing it. A graphic novel adaptation sounded perfect to me to dig in. This is to say that my review does not cover how well the novel was adapted by Samuel Sattin and I approached this as my first exposure to the work.

The book opens with the orc adventurer Viv and her accompanying peers slaying the creature Scalvert Queen that had the fortune-bringing Scalvert's Stone inside its body. Claiming the stone, Viv abruptly leaves the group and goes to a DnD-reminiscent, medieval high fantasy town Thune, where she starts her new life by setting up a café. Hers was to be the first in town, as coffee was at the time a foreign, unknown concept to the people of Thune. With unlikely but talented and trusty workmates such as the inexperienced barista succubus Tandri and carpenter Cal, they manage to turn the café into a success. However, forces from Viv's old and new life threaten her peace.

The story shines in its simplicity. The early parts resemble an endearing guide to start a business as Viv and her team figure out ways to improve the café while quirky customers become regular characters, and eventually become a borderline found family. My favorite being the rat baker Thimble! There's a good dash of a romance on the side that complements Viv's arc of establishing her new life. The emerging conflicts provide steady but subtle tension to the story. However, I'm not sure if this would go against the plot but I thought internal conflicts or minor misunderstandings between the characters, as well as their backstories and motivations, would've thickened their dynamics.

As a graphic novel, I loved the art by Shanti Rittgers and Sarah Webb as it perfectly embodied the vibe of the medieval fantasy setting with its bright earth-toned palette. It also depicted the facial expressions and body language of the characters well. This aspect is most especially important to show Viv's range of emotions that many scenes rely on. I also particularly loved the clear, thoughtful placement and organization of the text bubbles.

I don't think I'd proceed to seek the novel anymore as I felt like this adaptation already gave me the perfect blend of the cozy, wholesome, day-to-day workplace fiction that the novel provides but in a medium that adds fun, imaginative character designs and visuals. Although, I'm interested in possible continuations or lore/world expansions as long as it wouldn't sacrifice the low-stakes concept. Recommended to fans of the series and to those like me who wanted to check out the story but wouldn't commit to reading the original text.

Important context: I read Travis Baldree's original version of Legends & Lattes, so I knew how the story is supposed to go. What I found in Samuel Sattin's graphic novel version was exactly what I was hoping for--a faithful, beautifully rendered retelling of the story I had enjoyed so much to begin with.

Legends & Lattes tells the story of Viv, a lifelong adventurer-for-hire that is looking to turn over a new leaf in her retirement--by opening the first ever coffeeshop in the city of Thune. As she does the work necessary to get the business off the ground (rennovating an old building, hiring employees, attracting customers, beefing with the local mob boss) she gathers around herself a group of lovable misfits who are similarly looking for a fresh start. The book's themes focus on the importance of community, giving back, and embracing the person you want to be. One of the most satisfying aspects of the book is the promise it makes that like attracts like--If you put kindness out into the world, it will give you kindness right back.

It's the definition of a cozy reading experience, and Sattin's artwork elevates and enhances that mood. The art style is whimsical. As someone who read the original novel, I was pleased with most of the character designs. It's always a risk when you move from prose to a visual medium, but fortunately I didn't find that any of the art jarred against my mental imaginings of the characters and setting. Tandri's depiction was a particular favorite of mine (her outfits are so cute!) I have some minor quibbles--I wish that the Scalvert's Stone had been given a more distinctive design (it's literally just a yellowish pebble with no details), and I would have personally preferred a less cartoony style for Thimble--but these are extremely minor and mostly a matter of taste. The fact that I have to reach so far for nitpicks goes to demonstrate what a beautiful job Sattin did with the source material. The only story weaknesses that remain are those inherent to the original novel (e.g. Thimble's lack of backstory, and the ambiguous worldbuilding about what a "succubus" actually is in this setting that makes for some clunky racism allegories.)

All in all, I can thoroughly recommend this to fans of the original book and new readers alike. 🫓 There are stories where the sword decides everything. And then there are stories where you settle down and that's when the real battle begins. Legends & Lattes was a cozy read filled with the aroma of coffee and, my personal favorite, cinnamon.

🫓 Viv is the kind of heroine you would normally find in the middle of a battlefield, blood on her armor and a reputation fierce enough to intimidate even monsters. But the moment she hangs up her sword and decides to open a coffee shop in a city that doesn't even know what coffee is, things become surprisingly tense. Because sometimes the greatest challenge isn't destroying something, it's building it from the ground up.

🫓 The conflict doesn't come from epic duels (although Viv's past constantly looms in the background like a threat), but from seemingly ordinary obstacles: finding ingredients, convincing people to try something completely unfamiliar, and transforming a run-down building into a place full of life. Everything is infused with an energy that makes every small success feel like a hard-earned victory.

🫓 Don't let that peaceful atmosphere fool you, though, because cracks begin to show. The past doesn't disappear simply because you want it to. Shadows from Viv's former life return in the form of very real dangers, and the tension slowly but steadily rises. Every friendship she builds, from loyal employees to unexpected connections, becomes something worth protecting. Suddenly, the stakes are no longer just about a coffee shop, but about an entire life filled with new companions, shared stories, and unforgettable experiences.

🫓 Baldree's writing is warm without lacking intensity. He creates a fascinating contrast between the violence of the past and the comfort of the present, and the story's pacing pulls you in before you even realize it.

🫓 The atmosphere is perhaps the strongest aspect of the novel: the smell of coffee, the sound of restored wood, the excitement of welcoming the first customers, all of it creates a space you never want to leave. What I especially loved is that just when you start to feel safe, the story reminds you that nothing comes without a price. I was so invested in Viv and Tandri!

🫓 One detail that stays with you long after you've finished the book is the idea that change is never simple, especially when you're trying to become someone different from who you've always been. Viv isn't only fighting the world around her, she's also struggling with her own identity. Every small decision, from perfecting recipes to choosing whom to trust, becomes a statement about the person she wants to become.

When this adaptation was announced I was immediately excited, Legends & Lattes is such a warm, visual world and the idea of seeing it brought to life in full colour felt like a natural fit. And for the most part, Samuel Sattin, Shanti Rittgers, and Sarah Webb have absolutely delivered.

Let me get my one gripe out of the way first, because it's an important one to flag for the right readers. The original novel's greatest strength was always its relationships, the slow, tender way the bonds between Viv and her found family develop over time is the emotional engine of the whole story. That kind of quiet, gradual character work is difficult to translate into the graphic novel format, and some of that depth is inevitably lost here. For fans of the novel this won't be a dealbreaker, you're bringing all of that love and investment with you. But if you're coming in completely fresh, some of the emotional payoffs towards the end of the story may not land with quite the same weight, simply because there hasn't been enough space to fully earn them.

That really is my only significant criticism though, and it is largely an inherent challenge of the format rather than a failure of the team behind it.
Everything else is exactly what I was hoping for. The story itself remains faithful to what made the novel so special, the high fantasy, low stakes charm of Viv's dream to open Thune's first coffee shop is fully intact, and all the warmth and gentle humour that made this such a beloved read translates beautifully to the page. The art is gorgeous! Full colour, rich with character, and the team have done a wonderful job of taking the existing visual identity of this series and making it genuinely their own rather than simply illustrating what already existed in readers' imaginations.

If you're a fan of the novel, there is so much to love here. And if you're new to Travis Baldree's world, this is a genuinely lovely entry point, you'll get enough of the story and the spirit of it to understand why so many people adore it, and plenty to talk about with anyone who has already read the book.

I'd love nothing more than to see Bookshops & Bonedust and Brigands & Breadknives get the same treatment. Consider this a formal request.

Legends & Lattes: The Graphic Novel captures everything that made Travis Baldree's original novel such a comforting and memorable read. This cozy fantasy world is beautifully brought to life through the gorgeous artwork of Shanti Rittgers and Sarah Webb, adapted by Samuel Sattin. The graphic novel perfectly conveys the warmth, charm, and heart of Viv's journey as she trades battle and bloodshed for espresso machines and pastries in pursuit of her dream of owning a coffee shop. At its core, it's a story about reinvention, community, and the courage to build something meaningful after leaving an old life behind.

What stands out most is how faithfully the adaptation preserves the heart of the story. The relationships feel genuine and well- earned, from the friendships that slowly develop around the café to the sense of found family that becomes the book's emotional core. The everyday challenges of opening a business, earning trust, and creating a welcoming space are given just as much importance as the fantasy elements, making the story feel both refreshing and relatable. The expressive artwork brings the characters to life beautifully, while the inviting café scenes add new depth and atmosphere to an already beloved world. Rather than simply retelling the story, this adaptation offers a new way to experience it.

The graphic novel format slightly improves the pacing, making it an especially accessible entry point for readers who may find slower-paced, character-focused cozy fantasies less engaging. The story still retains all the warmth and charm that made the original so beloved.

Whether you're a longtime fan of Legends & Lattes or stepping into Thune for the first time, this adaptation is a charming and heartfelt introduction to the world of cozy fantasy. Warm, uplifting, and quietly inspiring, it is a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful adventures begin when the fighting ends. A perfect example of how a graphic novel adaptation can honour its source material while adding something fresh and visually enchanting.
