Inner World: Inner World
“Trust me, my love. And remember—the world is not what we’ve been told.”
It’s been years since seventeen-year-old Ayla Livingston’s mother was taken and now she’s forced to run again. But the father she barely knows has finally found her and takes her to Inner World, a powerful civilization hidden beneath the Earth’s surface.
Built on advanced technology and genetic perfection, Inner World is unveiling a war with the Surface. Not even her father, its highest-ranking military official, can stop it.
Ayla’s only chance to change the future is to compete in the Rite, a brutal competition testing mind, body, and spirit. Win, and Ayla earns influence among those who rule. Lose, and she lives the rest of her life without power, forced to watch the invasion unfold in silence.
Her assigned trainer for the Rite is brilliant, relentless—and forbidden. Fiercely loyal to the system she longs to dismantle, he pushes her to her limits as the Rite draws them dangerously close. But triumph carries its own sentence: the Pairing, a mandatory genetic bonding that will determine who she is allowed to love.
As war looms, Ayla must decide. Submit to the system or risk everything to tear it down.

Debut novel? Wow—Ariel wrote a fantastic story!
I’ve never been a sci-fi fan, but this scientific dystopian novel hooked me from the prologue.
The intricacy of the Inner World (where we believes Earth’s core exists) is fascinating. It holds a population with advanced technology that strives to use each person’s blood and DNA to advance society in the most ideal and beneficial way. Only those who compete in the Rite earn a place on the Council, helping to lead the Inner World.
Ayla finds herself taken back to the Inner World, where she must go undercover and work her way into the Council to prevent an attack on the surface world.
In a society where you’re “paired” with your ideal genetic match, your job and purpose are decided for you. Love is a foreign concept. Ayla must hold fast to what makes her truly special!
The world-building is amazing! The characters are well rounded, and the MMC is an absolute delight even if he has a terrible attitude at first. The relationships are thoughtfully developed, and everything keeps you locked in, eager to find out what happens next and who to trust.
Read if you like hunger games/divergent/ The Giver vibes
Futuristic technology
Found family

Impending war

Great concept, but I needed the execution in a better font, so to speak.
The narration style was a little info-dumpy in a way that did not feel connected. The dialogue felt plain and sometimes cringy. And it was strange to read because there would be some decent quotes amidst pages of plain writing. And I tried so hard, but for some reason really struggled to picture scenes/settings in respect to the action.
The pacing worked against the storytelling. It gave me whiplash. In the middle of the book specifically, I noticed the most crucial developments and significant moments only get a couple sentences at a time before moving on to the next thing. It was frustrating to read and made this novel feel more like an outline. It was rushed and the sense of time felt all over the place.
Several larger elements to the story felt underutilized to me: the academy and the trials to be exact. They did not hit the way I would expect them to in a dystopian.
Speaking of underutilization, I did not think the romance had enough behind it. Ayla and Oliver struggled hard with miscommunication and their fights felt melodramatic. Oliver fell a little too hard and it wasn't convincing because the romantic progression was not seamless between the first and second half. Oliver was a moody MMC to the point of giving me the ick and Ayla lacked depth. Her somehow thinking everything was her fault started to feel self-centered after a while. There was a ton of missed opportunity to play up the tension between the trainee x instructor dynamic. I didn't feel any tension, it felt like Oliver didn't like Ayla until suddenly he did. I needed the dual-POV because the single-POV wasn't giving. Their kisses were written really well (as if more effort was put there) but in my opinion nothing else about the romantic subplot was. The side characters were plot devices.
The ending was fine with a couple interesting eurekas, but super rushed like everything else.
Overall, I think too many technical distractions interfered with the creativity of the premise. I am not curious enough to be interested in book two.
In this book:
-hidden dystopian world
-hidden identity
-single POV
-forbidden love
-he trains her
-trials
-found family
-sci-fi elements
Content Guide:
romance - clean
language - hell 5x, a** 2x, sh*t once
violence - semi-frequent I guess & not too descriptive
Potential Content Warnings:
-depiction of a dead body
-depictions of injury
-action violence
-unwanted advances

Inner World Review 5 ⭐️
Wow… Inner World was just the dystopian romance I needed! I completely fell in love with Ayla, Oliver and their new found family. This story is set in a world divided by more than hot lava: the Surface World and the Inner World. The Inner World is a genetically modified society to ensure the strongest, smartest, and “perfect” people are in the “perfect” place in society. Ayla our FMC, Just when I thought I knew what was going to happen, bam, you get a twist you never saw coming. There were so many great characters throughout the story and Ariel does a great job of leaving easter eggs to keep you guessing their true motives. I related so much to Ayla in her moments of self-doubt, self-discovery, and her passion to help others. I LOVED the slow burn, connection, and draw between her and Oliver! They are truly a dynamic duo and I am so excited to see where Ariel takes these characters next! I honestly can’t believe this is Ariel’s first novel and I think we can expect big things from her in the future. This book is perfect for fans of The Hunger Games, Divergent and GATTACA.

I LOVED this book. I read a lot of fantasy/romantasy and dabble in science fiction... I have never come across a book like this. I get bored of the same stories but this was new!!! New ideas and characters that you just love.

6/5 Stars!
Can I give it 10 out of 5 stars? Is that a thing?
I feel speechless…
My mind genuinely cannot wrap around the fact that this is Ariel’s debut novel. This is not only my FAVORITE read of the year, this makes the list for one of my favorite reads of all time! I’m absolutely blown away by this book! I don’t know how Ariel wrote something this phenomenal, but I’m so glad she did!
This isn’t a book that takes easing into, it’s a book you absolutely won’t be able to put down! It hit the ground running starting on page 1 and came together so beautifully with a 10/10 ending!
✨ Hidden World
✨ Dystopian
✨ Forbidden Love
✨ Trials
✨ No Spice
✨ Found Family
The MC’s!? Amazing, Easy to Love, Fierce…all the good things! Ayla was such a fun FMC, she was strong and watching her learn herself throughout the story was epic! Oliver took more time to understand, but oh. my. gosh. He’s amazing…seriously…especially when he said “Tahium tunuk ka naum,” (If You Know, You Know)
🌶️ No Spice, Only Kisses
🤬 Very Mild Language
‼️ Parent Being Taken, Agression & Fighting, Mildly Descriptive Injuries
It’s not super often that every single side character is wildly intriguing and super complementary to the story, but in Inner World…every single side character is a star (yes, even the villains 😌)
If this review alone hasn’t convinced you to read this book, just take my word for it and pick yourself up a copy! I don’t think it’s possible to be disappointed by this story. The ending was such a PERFECT way to lead into book 2…
Which I’m going to be *impatiently* waiting for…
Really, Really incredible work! Thank you for writing such a GEM of a book Ariel!

“I believe everyone has a purpose—something that makes them soar or come alive. Somehow . . . I found mine in you.”
This debut novel is an amazing YA dystopian. Some aspects made me think of Divergent while others brought to mind Hunger Games. The world building and characters are fantastic and I was completely drawn in. I loved the themes that belief is stronger than blood, and that being imperfect is a gift not a flaw.
Ayla is brave, fierce, and determined. Her strength in both what she has faced and is facing was incredible. I loved her growth and overcoming her self doubt. And I loved her desire to fight the wrong, exposing the evil people behind it. I enjoyed watching her relationship with Marshal and her friendship with Skye grow. Oliver is intelligent, understanding, and inexplicably drawn to Ayla. I loved seeing his protectiveness grow. I loved how he pushed Ayla to do her best but accepted her limits too. Oh! And Oliver’s family members are absolutely lovable. I loved the connection and trust Ayla and Oliver found with one another. I loved their magnetic draw and slow burn romance. They withstood some crazy trials and their love grew stronger because of it. The ending was beautiful but also leaves you wondering what will happen next.
A few more quotes:
“What does it mean?” “Besides discovering that losing you is my greatest fear . . . I’m afraid they all know.”
“I see you as someone who freed me. Who showed me there’s more to life. And now that I’m awake from the dream I was once in, I can’t go back. I can’t go on seeing Inner World as this perfect place that it’s not. How can a place be perfect if it keeps you from being with the person you love?”
“I want you to know what I want—and that’s you. Forever. I’ll marry you a hundred ways in a hundred worlds if that’s what it takes for us to be together.”
This is an upper YA book. There is fighting and blood during training and the Rite, some physical abuse by a secondary character towards the FMC, mild language, and heated kisses.
This complimentary copy was provided by the author. I was not required to give a positive review, rating and opinions are my own.

“If something in this story made you feel seen, braver, or reminded you that being imperfectly human is not a flaw but a gift… then every late night every doubt, every fear was worth it.”
Inner World took me by surprise! This is such a unique take on dystopian romance. Literally… I’m trying to find the words here. The premise of having DNA connecting a person’s future !?!? There’s an Inner World a paradise honestly, where their technology far surpasses any we’ve seen thus far, as well as a Surface World!?!?!? WHAT DO YOU MEAN!? I was fascinated with this book!!
War is brewing between the two worlds and our FMC Alya (who lives a lonely childhood and harbors a lot of feelings about her father and losing her mother) finds out that the Inner World DNA determines a person’s future!!!!! And she finds out that her DNA is advanced!?!? SHE IS THAT GIRLLLLL! Especially after her father wanted/wants her to compete in the competition (the Rite) with the hope of becoming a SPYYYYY!?!? Have I convinced you to read this yet!?!? Pleaseeeeee
There she meets our MMC Oliver an instructor there and it doesn’t take long to realize that things are quite as they seem. Gahhhhh! So good!!
It’s got all the things a romance girlie could want: slowwwww burn, yearning and chemistry off the charts! And can absolutely be enjoyed by so many readers!!!!

I couldn’t put this book down. I finished it way faster than I expected and absolutely loved it.
If you enjoy Divergent meets Journey to the Center of the Earth vibes, this one is definitely worth picking up. The worldbuilding was immersive and fascinating, and I found myself completely pulled into the story from the beginning.
The ending was satisfying while still leaving me desperate to know what happens next. There are so many unanswered questions, and I already need the next book.
I especially loved the chemistry between Oliver and Ayla. Their relationship felt natural and developed at a believable pace. I’m always a sucker for a protective MMC, and Oliver definitely delivered. I also appreciated that Ayla was portrayed as strong, capable, and feminine without feeling like an over-the-top warrior archetype. She felt real, and I loved watching her grow throughout the story.
If you love:
🖤Found family
🖤Forbidden love
🖤Protective MMC
🖤Strong FMC
🖤Slow-burn romance
🖤Adventure and exploration
🖤High-stakes dystopian world
🖤A snarky side character you love to hate
Then you’ll immediately want to add to your ever growing tbr 🤭😉

I absolutely love a dystopian romance, and Inner World definitely gives you just that. Think Divergent, The Hunger Games, The Giver, and The City of Ember all in one!
I finished this in 2 days!! The author did such an amazing job describing this world that I was literally in it. The plot twists really catch you by surprise, I did not know what was going to happen untill it did! The world building is amazing, this seemingly utopian society is based on science and the author really went into detail.
The romance is great!! The yearning, the slow-burn and then the protectiveness!!! A+
That cliffhanger is killing me though!! I will be impatiently waiting for book 2!!!

I loved this book! I’m always looking for something different, not just the same old, same old. This dystopian world is unlike anything I’ve read. Just enough romance, mystery and intensity to keep you hooked. Must read.

Review of an Advanced Reader Copy
Everything we’ve ever been told about the center of our earth is not true. There is no inner core no magma. In the Inner World there exists the most beautiful place you could ever imagine, with technology that far exceeds our own. A world where genetic pairs and perfecting DNA is coveted. Lifespans are extended and instead of a moon, there exists a shadow sun.
Ayla our FMC is just 13 when he mother was taken from her, forced to be resourceful using the money her mother gave her and finding odd jobs. She meets Marshal Livingston who explains there is another world one just below the earth, or surface earth.
This book is the perfect book for all ages, readers that enjoy dystopian stories. I was hooked from the beginning of this story just so mesmerized by the beautiful world that A. Miller wrote. This book has an “enemies to lovers” trope but contains no spice, this is the type of book I a (cough cough 39 year old) can enjoy but know that my 13 year old would enjoy it just as much. This book is for the readers that love a hidden world, trials and where she has to push him away to save him. This book is the reason I love dystopian stories. The world is so similar to our own but so vastly different.

I don’t really know where to start with this. There were a few things I enjoyed about the story, and quite a few things I didn’t.
This has similar vibes to early 2000s YA dystopian novels, and that’s always fun. The concept of Inner World and Surface World was interesting.
However, I felt like the timeline was a bit odd. A rush of information in the beginning, and then there were some jarring jumps forward weeks and even a month at a time. The romance felt rushed to me, as well.
I would say if you enjoy dystopian, forbidden love, a dangerous trial, and a high tech setting, maybe give this a try.
It didn’t quite hit the mark for me!
-Kisses only romance, but a bit heated in parts
-Mild language
-some violence
*I was gifted a copy by the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What a creative and clever world Inner World is!
The world building was unique, the characters were complex, and the story line was layered.
Ayla is taken to Inner World a place she didn't know existed. Her eyes are being opened to the new world and also to the problems that are between Surface World and this new one. She could be the missing piece and the one to bridge the gap. She needs to train and prepare to compete in the Rite. I liked her perseverance and her unique abilities.
Oliver is her assigned trainer with a secret and troubled past. He has his eyes opened and together they could help solve the worlds problems. He is a hard sell, stubborn, and is good at challenging Ayla.
I liked the message of believing in yourself. In doing so it brings freedom and unlocks your true potential. I liked the found family. There were so many good twists and turns that surprised me! I liked the complexities of DNA, food system, advanced technology, and the fashion! What a fun world to get swept away in.
Thank you Ariel for this gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

'you are the missing part of me and the center of my world.'"And now I understood why love mattered so much... because it gave life meaning. It gave life purpose.
Finally, I knew what love felt like. It gave light to the darkest of fears. It brought life to parts of me I didn't know existed. I now had hope for the future.
I found my purpose in you.

A great YA, dystopian, slow burn romance with found family that will keep you guessing until the end. The Idea of DNA connecting a person's future is something new and exciting but I wished we got a little more explanation of how it connected people together. What parts of their DNA connected them? Maybe that is something to look forward to in the next book.
Ayla spends her childhood alone when her mother was taken from her. Left to fend for herself she sings for a living but also find that singing is her emotional connection with others.
One night when she feels like the unknown is closing in, and she planning to leave her father, Marshall finds her. After she is injured, she is taken to another world on Earth, Inner World.
Once there she finds there is a war brewing between Inner world and where she is from, Surface World, and she is desperate to stop it.
Alya finds that in Inner World DNA is what determines a person's future. It determines their partners and career. Ayla finds that she advanced DNA due to her mother being from Surface World and father from Inner World.
Her father wants her to compete on the Rite, a competition that determines future council members, with the hope of being a spy and helping to prevent a war. She impersonated her assumed dead cousin to compete.
Once she finds an instructor in Oliver she finds that are not what they seem. She has to fight not only for herself but the family she has grown to love. Will it be enough to save her family and her world?
Overall I would say this was a great read with excellent world building and I am excited to see where the story goes next.

A Breath of Fresh Air! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I am still reeling from the brilliant concept of Inner World. In a sea of predictable plots, this book is such a refreshing change of pace. It isn’t often that a debut novel manages to completely shift your perspective, but Inner World does exactly that. From the very first page, I was struck by the brilliance of the concept. The world building is incredibly confident, and the underlying messages woven throughout the story added so much depth to the experience.
The most striking thing about Inner World is its originality. The author has managed to craft a high concept premise that feels entirely new and deeply immersive. Knowing that this is the author’s first book makes it even more impressive, and the prose is handled with the grace of a veteran storyteller.
Let's talk characters:
While the "new idea" is what hooks you, the characters are what keep you turning the pages. They are relatable, and evolve in ways that feel both earned and surprising.
I particularly loved:
The emotional resonance of both Alya and Oliver. There as so much to unpack with these main characters and I appreciate the way the author navigated their internal landscape.
The MANY Underlying Messages: Beyond the surface-level plot, there are beautiful, subtle themes about self-discovery, resilience, and the complexity of the human psyche.
I had to stretch to find anything negative to review other than I WANTED MORE...and now I have to wait for book 2.
I am officially a fan and look forward to many more from this author. I’m already counting down the days until the next release!

3 Stars.
“They want you sharp enough to be useful but clueless enough not to fight back.”
The vibes:
- False identity
- YA dystopian romance
- Book 1 in series
- Closed door (kisses only)
My thoughts:
I liked the premise of this book, and as the plot found its groove in the second half it really took off. When Ayla learns that there’s an entire civilization in the inner world, she’s immersed into an entirely new civilization and culture. With a Rite (trials), a potential Pairing, and an undeniable connection with someone who is absolutely off limits, Ayla will be pushed to a breaking point.
The characters were interesting, and I really enjoyed some of the side characters, such as Iris and Oliver’s family. I expect to see more of these in future books which I feel will add a lot of depth to the story.
While I liked the two main characters, I would have loved to see a little bit more depth from them individually and especially together. Their relational dynamic shift was very abrupt for me, and I had a hard time keeping up with the speed of their feelings for each other. I did think they had some really cute moments together though.
Towards the end of the book, it all hits the fan and there’s a lot going on which made it super easy to binge.
Note / spice content: closed door (kisses only); light language (a*, bullsh* ).
Thank you so much to Ariel J. Miller for the gifted copy. I received this book from the author, but this honest review is voluntary.

⭐ 3.25/5
There's something about a good dystopian story that instantly takes me back to my teens and early twenties, when the genre had me completely hooked. Inner World gave me that same feeling, and I loved getting to experience it again.
The concept immediately pulled me in, and I loved slowly piecing together how this world worked. Every answer seemed to raise even more questions, and I couldn't wait to see where the story was headed. By the end, I was completely invested and already wondering what comes next.
My biggest struggle was with the pacing. There were moments where the story leaned a little too heavily into explaining the world, and I found myself wishing those details had been woven more naturally into the narrative. Those slower stretches occasionally pulled me out of the story, which is what kept this from being a higher-rated read.
That said, this is such a promising debut from Ariel J. Miller. She created a fascinating world that I'm excited to return to, and I'll absolutely be picking up the sequel. If you're a fan of dystopian stories, imaginative world-building, and unraveling the mysteries of a new world, I think this one is worth adding to your TBR.
Thanks so much to the author for reaching out and allowing me to read this book. The copy of the eARC was provided by the author but the review is voluntary and feelings are my own.

I had the opportunity to read an ARC of this book, and overall it was a fun and quick read as it only took me like 4 days to finish!
The concept of the Inner World and Surface World was really unique, and I honestly wish we had gotten to explore even more of it because the setting was one of my favorite parts. The story also gave me nostalgic vibes from some of the dystopian books I loved growing up.
I liked the main character and thought the other characters were interesting, but Iris was definitely my favorite(I would die for that man).
One thing I struggled with was the pacing in the beginning. There was a lot of information given all at once, but that could’ve just been me as I had a concussion when I started reading it..
Also, at times I also felt like the stakes could have been higher. Certain moments that were meant to feel urgent didn’t always land for me emotionally, and sometimes it felt like events were happening to the main character rather than her actively making choices that drove the story forward.
That being said, this book was really good and if you enjoy dystopians like divergent or the hunger games, this could be a fun one to check out!

As a male my wife has gotten me out of my usual Brandon Sanderson, Pierce Brown, and many other sci-fi and high fantasy series. When she recommended I read this I wasn't sure how I would like this book. I finished this book in two days! I pulled this up on a plane to the midwest and then got stuck in a storm and had to hover above the city for an extra 2 hours before we could land and I never put it down! The story continued to move forward without stopping and I felt like every chapter I finished I needed to know what part of the story would unfold next!
Having just read the most recent installment of the Red Rising series I was excited to read something that kept me guessing and emotionally involved. This had the perfect amount of budding romance, familial mystery, and a system of "enhancements" that is easy for readers of many ages to enjoy! I will be anxiously awaiting the next book because that cliff hanger wrecked me!!

It always amazes me how authors are able to create entire new worlds from scratch and she did it beautifully in this one! I kept slowing down at the beginning to make sure I was catching everything to understand the world. From there, I was completely mesmerized by the story.
This book drew me deeper in so many ways -- family, a love story, twists and turns, and commentary on "perfection".
There were so many quotes from the book that I jotted down to remember and continue to think on. But so that I don't spoil anything, instead I'll share a quote from the Acknowledgements: "If something in this story made you feel seen, braver, or reminded you that being imperfectly human is not a flaw but a gift. . . then every late night, every doubt, every fear was worth it." This book made me feel all of those things and more.
Can't wait to read more about this world.

Inner World is a YA dystopian fantasy for this new generation! Ariel J. Miller manages to create a hidden world with intricate details where the reader still feels grounded and submersed into the experience of her FMC Ayla. The action is instant, the slow burn romance is worth the yearning, and the twists and turns are ever present throughout the entire story. The relationships that Miller has written are so engaging and you are rooting for our girl Ayla the whole time! Even with my busy schedule I was able to read SO much in each pocket of time I got—it was that compelling! This is a fantastic debut, and we will all be waiting eagerly for the next installment!

⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
A good clean fun dystopian fantasy is exactly what the doctor ordered!
I really enjoyed the easy world building and the whole “inner world” under the earths surface! It was so easy to picture every step of the way! The dialogue and plot were easy to follow and there were many twists and turns I absolutely didn’t see coming.. the endinggggg
I think this was truly such a unique and fun debut!
Read this if you love:
Dystopian
Hidden identity
Forced proximity
Forbidden romance
Action + adventure
FMC is 17 for a good portion of the book and MMC is 23. I do really appreciate that the author didn’t have anything beyond attraction until she turned 18 but this may be a consideration for some

WHAT. A. RIDE!! Honestly going into this book I was a little scared with the spaceship at first thinking there were aliens or something, but boy was I wrong! This book is like a Hunger Games & Divergent love child. Would I say it’s the most thought-provoking, emotionally devastating, make-me-reevaluate-my-entire-life kind of experience? Probably not. But, I ate this up in a matter of days needing to know what happens next. I was so invested in the love story that I caught myself crying at one point. This was such a fun and easy read that I think would be great for any YA reader! I can’t wait for the second one!

Wow, the creativity and imagination that went into creating this world is astounding! I LOVED the sleek designs, new technology, and energy manipulation/gene descriptors you see in this book. Pairing science with powers and tying epigenetics into it - that was totally my cup of tea! 🫖 some of the technology in it would be something I'd love to have in my own life (those earrings?! 😍)
And the character's relationship?! 👩🍳😘 So well developed and beautifully crafted! I also love the side characters and can't wait, because it looks like we may get to see more of them in the next book of the series! Ariel knocked it out of the park with her debut! ❤️

Ok...so this is not my typical genre but I was asked if I was interested in arc reading it and honestly jumped at the opportunity.
I'm so so happy I did.
I found the story to be truly intriguing with the existence of the Surface World and the Inner World.
This book grabbed me almost immediately. The characters are very well written and the twists the story takes kept me guessing right to the end.
This is a book I highly recommend...5 stars all the way from me.
Thank you Ariel Miller for the opportunity.

I read this book during a trip, and it turned out to be a wonderful companion for the journey. It kept me intrigued and eager to see what would happen next. The author wove in so many fascinating elements surrounding the Rite, which made the story even more engaging—I found myself rooting for everyone involved. The love story between XYZ (don't want to spoil it for you) struck a perfect balance between strength and tenderness, adding real depth to the overall experience. I absolutely can’t wait for more books in this world—I need the next installment as soon as possible!

I started this book not really knowing what to expect, and boy was I surprised. It grabbed my attention right away. The details Ariel uses to paint a picture of Inner World, and their society made me feel like I was there. It took me into their world and really found myself resonating with Ayla. I love the story of finding her inner strength and also falling in love. I love a good love story. This book has all the feels, but also has plenty of action and science - all in one! I can’t wait to read more of her story.

Enemies to lovers. High-stakes. A fascinating world we've never visited. This book has it all and was a great read that kept me up into the late hours of the night finishing. If you liked Hunger Games, you will like Inner World. A place where human genetics has been manipulated time and again to create perfection and long lives. But, of course, just beneath the surface (pun intended), everything is far from perfect.

I absolutely loved this book! The story was incredibly creative and clearly very well thought out. The idea of advanced genetics and a hidden world existing within our own made the story feel unique and imaginative. The plot was extremely engaging, and the twists were truly unpredictable, which made it impossible to put the book down. The story kept building momentum, there was always something happening, so it never felt boring. I seriously loved this book and could not stop reading!
