Nothing Stays Buried

Rate this book
Fear grips her as she passes under the last streetlight on the remote highway. Seeing the familiar truck, she thinks she’s safe. But her scream is silenced by a gloved hand before her world goes black…

When Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane investigate a cold case on a remote ranch in Black Rock Falls, what they uncover chills them to the bone. In a shallow grave lies the lifeless body of farm worker Maria Reyes. Jenna’s heart breaks as she sweeps aside the woman’s long dark hair to find purple bruising all over her face.

Interviewing workers at the ranch, Jenna senses hostility and feels eyes watching her. Every instinct screams that something very sinister is happening here and when news breaks that another young woman is missing, her pulse races once again. Jenna knows she’s running out of time to find the girl before she too ends up in a woodland grave.

Jenna and her team work night and day, ignoring the growing threat from the farm workers around them, and soon discover a link between the ranch and an unsolved case where two people were burned alive in a remote cabin. Could a twisted killer have been using this place as a hunting ground for over a decade?

When a call comes in about suspicious activity at an off-the-grid hut in the nearby forest, Jenna knows this is the breakthrough they need. Scrambling her team, she prays that she can catch this ruthless killer before he takes another innocent life. But what waits for her beneath the trees is more terrifying than anything she imagined. Can she find the missing girl and save herself from becoming the monster’s next victim?

If you love Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh and Mary Stone, you will be addicted to this twisty new thriller from USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author D.K. Hood.

Congratulations DK Hood on book 30 in the Black Rock Falls series 👏 Another winner from this author in one of my favourite crime series to read. I devoured it in a few hours, so addictive. Tough to put down,, Nothing Stays Buried had me on the edge of my seat and turning the pages as quickly as I could.

This time the team are trying to help Rhett get the truth about his parents death more than 20 years ago. He has moved onto the ranch they owned and will do anything to find out what happened to them. In the process, the team find another body, this one buried in a cattle grave and only recently. There is a killer on the ranch, who will stop at nothing to stay hidden.

This case requires the big guns, so Katz and Styles from the FBI are called in to help. I love when the whole team work a case and this one has them all on edge.

Once again, I do not want to visit serial killer central! while the town sounds lovely and there are some great people there.. oh and Aunt Betty’s sounds delicious… there are too many psychopaths for my liking.

Thanks again to Bookouture for allowing me such early access to read this fantastic book. Published on June 30th and is not to be missed.

This is probably the first one where I realised what the title meant, really and truly: Nothing Stays Buried.

It was nice to see everybody. I do love Beth, and it was nice to see her back in her full capacity. Those who have been following the series and the Beth Katz series will understand what I mean It is always Serial Killer Central in Black Rock Falls, and being book 30 in a series, it's worrying how scary and inventive these people are becoming.

It was nice to have Rhett at the forefront; we learnt about his family, his ranch, mainly because the murders are happening on his ranch. I just felt like it was nice for him to get some answers that he needed.

I can't believe we are on Book 30, and it was quite cute how it wrapped up. As always, we wrap up in Jenna's house, and generally we would have a little twist, but this time it felt like the series could end, and we would know everything would be okay.

Great news is that it isn't! I always really enjoy D.K's writing. It's engaging, as I said. It's book 30. It's still fresh, it's still inventive, it's still addictive. And I have a special investment in book 31, so I cannot wait to read it.

Returning to Black Rock Falls always makes me happy (I know that may sound twisted considering it’s labeled as a murder capital, but hey, I never claimed to be normal lol). I love Jenna and Dave and their team. They are such a special bunch. They all have their secrets, but that doesn’t keep them from working well together and being determined to protect the people of Black Rock Falls.

Jenna and Dave are in the middle of multiple cases in this one. Not only are they working on a cold case to try to figure out what happened to Rhett’s parents, they are trying to find missing girls in the area. And when they find a body buried on a ranch, they question whether they are looking for the same person.

I finished this one in a day. I can never put D. K.’s books down.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy of this book.

Before I even start about this fantastic story, I must say the cover looks so pretty on my kindle.
This series is never boring and I've read most of them now. Each story has a little more of Sheriff Jenna Alton's and Deputy David Kane's private life and a hint into their past.
This story has them investigating a cold case of a possible murder on their friend's ranch. When a body is discovered they have to wonder if there are more going back over a couple of decades.
Serial Killer Central is the unofficial motto to their town and surrounding forests and this story certainly didn't disappoint. My heart is still racing over the final chapters as more and more piece were put together.
I love that I never know who the criminal is until the author gets to that point. Fantastic story, I can't wait for the next story.

Seriously DK just HOW do you do it??? Each and every single time you manage to create another unique scenario, another epic page turner and my heart rocket, each and every single time!!! Just how!!! I swear there is witchcraft going on here! If you have never read any books by this epic author then firstly you cannot call yourself a crime lover and secondly where on Earth have you been hiding?! This is the 30th book in DK's addictive Detectives Kane and Alton series but each and every one can be read as a standalone. I would always recommend reading books in a series in order but if you start this first, and nobody can blame you with its stunning cover and intriguing synopsis then have no fear! I mean I'll try but my advice is stop reading this review and GET YOUR COPY NOW!!! Whatever you like to read just give this a go and you will NOT regret it!!! As you can tell I thoroughly enjoyed this addictive and stunning page turner!!! I mean I have read loads of books this year but THIS book has just shot to one of my favourite books of 2026 and I will be very surprised if anyone manages to knock it off that spot!!I This is one of the few books that I have listened 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but I listened to the whole book and I was extremely impressed by the absolutely fantastic narrator! This book was narrated by Patricia Rodriguez who did an absolutely incredible job of portraying the fear, tension and suspense in each of the characters voices. I have previously listened to 'Unmarried' by Emily Shiner that Patricia Rodriguez also narrated which I would also highly recommend and I am looking forward to listening to more books narrated by her! Hood has definitely chosen extremely talented narrators for this book and they definitely did the storyline justice. Well done Hood and Patricia!! Hood's evocative writing drags you deep into the storyline from the first sentence to the very last and will keep you up until the very last word! THAT ladies and gentleman is a true sign of an absolute must read. I've said it before about Hood's books and I shall say it again!! I would absolutely LOVE to see this turned into a movie and would wait up all night to get tickets to watch it!! Hood is one of those fantastic authors that it really does not matter if you are reading this book by the fire with a hot chocolate or on the beach with a cocktail as Hood whisks you into the storyline where you will be on the edge of your seat throughout with your heart pounding at the turn of every page!!

I am not going to go into details about the storyline as the publishers have done an amazing job of telling you what you need to know in the fantastic synopsis so if you want to more then you will just have to grab your copy of this absolutely fabulous page turner today and I can absolutely GUARANTEE you will not regret it!

This book is exquisitely written and had me hooked from the first page until the last. DK Hood way of writing is perfectly evocative and she has such a creative imagination!! Even with THIRTY absolutely amazing books in this action packed series she is still coming up with unique and action packed storylines that absolutely grip the reader immediately from page one to the very end!!! Hood's fantastic and evocative writing skills ensured the descriptions were so vivid, evocative and realistic I felt myself feeling the fear running through me and the hairs on my arms raise. This has got to be one of the best storylines I have ever read!!!! Just when you've read the best book in this series and you think it can't get any better BANG DK Hood does it again!! I absolutely LOVED the storyline, LOVE this series and LOVE this amazing author!!!. This book is absolutely perfect for any crime lovers as you are literally reading about crime, twists and murder!!! It just does not get better than that!!! Just seriously, I cannot say how brilliant all this book was!!! The storyline is packed with tension, suspense, family, emotions, realistic and flawed characters, friendship, drama, teamwork, action, tension and filled with twists and turns. I was absolutely shocked when everything was revealed and was not expecting it at all!!! I love the fact that after reading the amazing Detective Beth Katz' series I loved the links between the two series and love that now I have 2 amazing Series' by this epic author to look forward to reading when new books come out in either!! I genuinely thought for once I had actually worked out who it was in this amazing series but YET AGAIN DK Hood proves me wrong!! A HUGE congratulations to D.K Hood, it is getting harder and harder to shock me but you did it well!!! D.K Hood has obviously done her research on police procedurals which is yet another bonus as I've read many crime novels where the authors make massive mistakes due to not doing enough research. This is an absolutely unputdownable page turner and I cannot wait to read the previous and future books in what is one of the best series I have ever read!!

I absolutely LOVED meeting these amazing characters again and they are all realistic and I became completely invested in them. They have become like friends/family to me as I feel like I have got to know them so well and every time I meet them again I am landed and every time I have to say Goodbye I am gutted I have to wait to greet them again. They really are one of the best teams I have ever met and I certainly would not like to get on the wrong side of them!!!! I love that Jenna is such a strong female lead that has history and has been through so much but doesn't cower and stands strong. I have enjoyed watching her relationship with Dave has evolved especially now that they are parents!!. Dave is another fantastic character that I became invested in and I adore how protective of the team, and especially Jenna and his family, he is. Dave is someone I would move to the other side of the world if I did something to upset him!!! Dave and Jenna would do anything and everything to protect each other and THAT ladies and gents is true love and I feel honoured to have watched it develop so much!!! I also love the fact that they now have the addition of their sons Tauri and Jackson in their lives and adore seeing them as parents and how their life's are differing from before. The team dynamics work perfectly and I also enjoyed getting to know more about each and every one of the team. There are so many other characters that I loved in this book and loved meeting again but I am going to leave that to you too see when you read your copy. I must say my favourites have always got to be Duke, Ben Bear and Zorro though!!!! What an absolutely fantastic characters they are. I just love it when animals play such large parts in books and these K9's certainly do! Regardless of whether you love or hate any of the characters they all work perfectly to make this storyline an absolutely addictive, explosive page turner!!! The majority of the characters have become like friends to me and I'm always sad to say goodbye never knowing when I'll "see" them again so I really hope the next book is being written as I speak. Hint hint 😉 DK Hood!!!

Congratulations D.K Hood on yet ANOTHER HUMONGOUS success!!! Very rarely an authors books get better but you have certainly mastered it!!! I cannot wait to get stuck into more of your books and this is exactly why you are one my favourite crime authors!!! Here's to your next guaranteed success 🥂

This book is definitely in my top 5 and considering I've read 1000's this is a HUGE achievement!!! This series is also in my top 3 ♥

Do not start this until you have cleared yours schedules as you will not be able to put it down!!

Overall an absolutely addictive, heart racing and unputdownable crime thriller from the Queen Of Crime that will keep you up all night.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for inviting me to read and review this book.

This book picks up from the last. Rhett needs sheriff Jenna Alton and deputy Dave Kane to investigate his parents murders. Wolfe is investigating the pig farm. When a new body of a young girl badly beaten is found and another girl turns up, FBI agents Carter, Beth and Styles become involved.

It’s not secret that I love this series. The characters are very real to me and I love the dialogue between them. Like the others in the series, this was a fast pace book full of suspense. The unveiling was a complete shock to me. I enjoyed all of the build up, slow and steady but exciting.

This could be read standalone but you’re going to want to read them all! Highly recommend and can’t wait for boom 31!

Title: Nothing Stays Buried
Author: D. K. Hood
Series: Detectives Alton and Kane #30
Publisher: Bookouture
Genre: Mystery Thriller
Pub Date: June 30, 2026
My Rating: 4.5 Stars
Pages: 278

If Sheriff Jenna Alton and her husband Deputy David Kane are new to you, here is some background info ~ they live in Black Rock Falls and have an adorable son, Tauri who they adopted. Tauri has American Indian heritage. Alton and Kane are very proud of him and support the fact that he knows as much as possible about the culture. They now have another son, Baby Jackson and wonderful dog Duke.
Although I did not read the earlier books in this series, I do know Jenna and David are both in ‘Witness Protection’ and have changed their identity both with a changed appearance with a new face as well as new names.

Story begins when Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane are investigating a cold case.
Rhett Lawson was a student of Kane’s in his Rifle Range Class and has recently graduated from college. He wants to be a children’s advocate as he grew up in foster case. However, has always had concern about the death of his parents that happened when he was very young.

He invited Janna and Kane for a day at his ranch promising the young boys a day of riding while Rhett showed them his concerns about his parents’ death. They find the charred remains of the cabin with the front door partly incinerated with a strong lock and a key still in it. Jenna knows immediately that Rhett’s parents were locked in the cabin when the fire took place. The question now is why were they murdered? It is also suspicious that Rhett’s
grandparents were killed in an auto accident not long after.

While they are investigating the area near the cattle range, they uncover a somewhat new shallow grave and find the dead body of farm worker Maria Reyes who has bruising all over her face.

Serial Killer Central, aka Black Rock Falls, never fails to provide grizzly murders.

I always enjoy the fact that the team works together and when they need help, they know who can and will help. This case requires additional resources and Beth Katz and Dax Styles from the FBI are called in to help.
(You may remember from earlier stories that that Beth has two lives one as an FBI agent and the other as the mysterious ‘Tarot Killer’. )

As always, this story was action packet. Thankfully it was a quick read so that I can now breathe normally again!

Yep! I am a D. K. Hood and Alton and Kane fan.
Now l am looking forward to #31!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me a copy of *Nothing Stays Buried* by D.K. Hood in exchange for an honest review.

On paper, this book had all the ingredients of a gripping thriller: a remote ranch, missing women, old secrets, disturbing crimes, hidden cabins, buried evidence, and a serial killer investigation spanning decades. The plot itself was actually very strong and there were some really interesting ideas throughout, particularly the links between past and present crimes and the way the investigation slowly uncovered what had been happening at Lawson’s Ridge. There was definitely potential here for a dark, tense, atmospheric read.

Unfortunately, although the story could technically be read as a standalone, I did feel very aware that this was part of a much longer series. There were a lot of characters involved, and many of them seemed to have existing histories, relationships, traumas, inside jokes, and dynamics that were not fully built up within this book. Because of that, I struggled to connect with them emotionally. I could follow the plot, but I didn’t feel invested in the characters in the way I wanted to, especially when the book clearly expected the reader to care about them and their personal lives.

The pacing also did not work for me. Despite the seriousness of the crimes and the strength of the central mystery, I did not find the book gripping. There were moments that should have felt tense or shocking, but they never quite landed with enough impact. The investigation moved along, and there were plenty of developments, but I found myself reading without that need to keep turning the pages. For a thriller, I wanted more suspense, more atmosphere, and a stronger sense of urgency.

That said, I do think readers who are already familiar with the series and attached to Jenna, Kane, Beth, Styles, and the wider team may enjoy this much more than I did. The book clearly has an established world and a loyal cast, and I can see how long-time readers may appreciate seeing the team work together again. For me, however, the large cast, lack of emotional connection, and absence of real tension made this a disappointing read despite a solid plot.

Overall, *Nothing Stays Buried* had a great premise and an interesting crime at its centre, but it simply did not grip me. I appreciate the opportunity to read it, but sadly it was not for me.

Nothing Stays Buried is book 30 in the fantastic Kane and Alton series by D.K. Hood. Sheriff Jenna Alton and her husband Deputy David Kane are looking into a cold case from 20 years ago. Their friend, Rhett Lawson, inherited his parents farm once he was of age. He grew up in foster care and bonded with Kane in one of his classes. Rhett's parents were found dead in one of the small fishing cabins on the property. The story was that the cabin was hit by lightning and burned down with his parents inside. That never sat right with Rhett and he wants Jenna and Dave to look into it. They decide to take their kids, some friends from the sheriff's office, and go to the farm on a weekend for what looks like a horseback riding trip. They are really there to get a better look at the farm, the workers on the farm, and the cabin that burned down.

While looking around a body is discovered in a fresh dirt mound because her hand is sticking out of it. Someone buried this woman here and there are tracks left from farm equipment. Jenna and Dave call in their team to dig the woman out and find out who she is. Once the body is out, it's obvious she was beaten very badly. This brings back bad memories for Jenna and she has a tough time keeping it together.. As they interview the workers at the ranch there's hostility towards them. Jenna gets a bad feeling that something very dark is happening here. When they get word that another female worker is missing, Jenna is sure that someone on the ranch is beating and killing these women. Is a serial killer hiding out as a ranch hand and using the land as his burial grounds?

As people arrive to help with the investigation it becomes clear that there is more to this than meets the eye. Is it possible Rhett's parents death is connected to what's going on? Nothing Stays Buried is a hard book to put down. I read this book in one day because the suspense continues to build until you just can't stop. I love the Kane and Alton series and this is another great entry that can be read as a standalone if you haven't read any others in the series. I love a good mystery and Nothing Stays Buried kept me guessing. I rate Nothing Stays Buried 5 stars with my very highest recommendation. Nothing Stays Buried comes out on June 30 and should not be missed! I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of Nothing Stays Buried in exchange for a fair review.

Firstly I'd like to sincerely thank the publishers and Netgalley for the widget I received for this. You've no idea how excited I was to receive it, and of course it jumped straight to the top of my tbr pile.
I've been along for the ride since the beginning of the series back in 2017 when we first met Dave and Jenna, and I have loved every instalment. The characters’ backstories are extremely clever and unique and still add to the intrigue even some 9 years and 30 instalments later.
I thought an interesting place to start my review was to look back at what I thought of the first book, Don’t Tell a Soul.
“The only thing wrong with this book is that it’s the first in the series and I can’t immediately read another one. I loved this. This is going to be one of my must read series in the future. Really great read, read in one day”

Oh boy was I right! Kane rolled into town and Alton aimed the muzzle of a Glock 22 in his face.

Now we're on the 30th book and it's as engrossing a read as ever, but with the difference that we have come to know and love the characters and the developments in the subplots have kept me as glued as the suspenseful main plots have. Speaking of main plots, Serial Killer Central, aka Black Rock Falls, never fails to provide grizzly murders, but it's a huge credit to the author that there is no sameness nor repetition. Its also amazing to reflect how over the series new characters have been introduced, often providing the basis of a plot and then engraciating themselves into the fold. We've even moved onto the 2nd generation and their partners at times, which is where we find ourselves at the start of Nothing Stays Buried when Jenna and the team are trying to uncover what happened to Rhett’s parents. When I say team I mean everyone. All the characters have gathered in Black Rock Falls and are helping to solve the puzzle. A huge twist will knock you off your feet! A massive “what the hell!” moment.
As we leave everyone celebrating young Jackson's birthday and the Fourth of July ,all I can think is “I can't wait for instalment 31.

Riveting, tense, pulse pounding, and addictive, Nothing Stays Buried is a thrilling page turner!!!! D.K. Hood always delivers and I loved Nothing Stays Buried, the 30th book in the Detectives Kane and Alton series. Plus, FBI agents, Beth Katz and Dax Styles from her Special Agent Beth Katz series are in this book as well. Woohoo!!!!!! I love it when she does cross-over books! These four investigative characters are awesome, and I love how they work together! Plus, the character development and glimpses into their private lives mixed with the case(s) in this book had me feeling both happy and tense at the same time!

In Nothing Stays Buried, Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane are investigating a cold case on a remote ranch when they uncover a chilling and horrific discovery - a woman's body in a shallow grave! When they begin asking questions, they are met with contempt, hostility, and half-truths. When they call in friends, Beth Katz and Dax Styles things get even more interesting!

This book is full of tension, dread, danger, unease, twists, and secrets! I could not get enough of this chilling book. Once again, D.K. Hood crafted a well thought out mystery thriller which had me turn the pages at warp speed. I tried my best super sleuthing as well to try and figure out whodunit. I wasn't successful but loved where D.K. Hood and her characters took me in Nothing Stays Buried.

*A buddy read with Bec (becbingesbooks). Please read her review as well to get her thoughts on Nothing Stays Buried!

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

Nothing Stays Buried proves exactly why D.K. Hood’s Black Rock Falls series is still one of the most addictive crime series around, even thirty books in. Somehow this author continues to keep the cases fresh, the tension high, and the characters compelling enough that I never want these books to end.

This installment had me completely hooked from the first chapter. What begins as Rhett’s search for the truth about his parents’ deaths quickly spirals into something far darker when another body is discovered buried on the ranch. The mix of a decades-old cold case with fresh murders made this one especially gripping, and I loved trying to piece together whether everything was connected before the team did.

One of my favorite things about this series is the team dynamic, and this book really delivers on that front. Having everyone involved in the investigation raised the stakes even more, and the addition of Katz and Styles from the FBI added a fresh layer of energy to the story. The pacing was relentless, packed with twists, red herrings, and that constant sense of danger that keeps you saying “just one more chapter” until suddenly the book is finished.

As always, Black Rock Falls continues to earn its unofficial title of serial killer central. The town itself sounds beautiful, the side characters feel like old friends at this point, and Aunt Betty’s food still sounds incredible, but the body count alone is enough to make me never want to visit in real life.

The ending absolutely blindsided me. Just when I thought I had things figured out, D.K. Hood pulled the rug out from under me one more time.

Fast-paced, suspenseful, and impossible to put down, Nothing Stays Buried is another fantastic entry in a series that shows no signs of slowing down. Crime thriller fans are going to devour this one.

I know to set aside several hours with nothing on my schedule before I get ready to dive into a book in this series because I will not be satisfied until I finish it. This is book 30 in this series, and it never gets old. D. K. Hood has kept the series fresh by adding additional characters as the dream team of law enforcement just keeps growing in Black Rock Falls a/k/a Serial Killer Central.

This one was especially good because she brought in two characters from another series, FBI agents Beth Katz and Dax Styles, to assist in this investigation. To know Beth is to love her, you will learn when you read about her and her side hobby.

There are three cases being investigated, one of which is frigidly cold. The crew is on a ranch of people who do not want them there and do not take kindly to being questioned. But it is a moot point because the owner wants answers, whether these people want to cooperate or not.

There are so many adjectives that I could use to describe this book including chilling, disturbing, and most of all binge worthy. Young women have been conveniently disappearing from this ranch for a while and Sheriff Jenna Alton and company aim to get answers and find the sick individual responsible for these tragedies. Serial Killer Central may have a lot of killers in its midst, but these killers have picked the wrong place to hunt because law enforcement's finest will hunt them down.

The thrills, chills, suspense and fantastic cast of characters make this book and this entire series truly addictive and worthy of ten stars. Buckle up and be ready to be dazzled.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Detectives Kane and Alton #30

when Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane investigate a cold case on a remote farm in Black Rock Falls, what they uncover chills them to the bone. In a shallow grave lies the lifeless body of farm worker Maria Reyes. Jenna's heart breaks as she sweeps aside the woman's long dark hair to find purple bruising all over her face. Jenna's team work night and day, ignoring the growing threat from the farm workers around them, and soon discover a link between the ranch and an unsolved case where two people were burned alive in a remote cabin. Could a twisted killer have been using this place as a hunting ground for over a decade? When a call comes in about suspicious activity at an off-the-grid hut in the nearby forest, Jenna knows this is the breakthrough they need.

Wow! Jenna, Dave and the rest of the team are back and this is the 30th book in a series that just keeps getting better. FBI Agents Beth Katz and Dax Styles are called in to investigate.

I was quickly pulled into this story. Searching for the truth about what had happened to his parents, only leads to another body being found on Rhett's ranch. Three cases are being investigated, and the team works well together to try and solve them. I'm also loving the new characters that have been added to the team. Now, we have to wait until September until book 31 - Whisper Through the Pines - is published.

Published 30th June 2026

I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #DKHood for my ARC of NothingStaysBuried in exchange for an honest review.

Nothing Stays Buried is another gripping instalment in the Kane and Alton series, and D.K. Hood delivers exactly what fans love: atmosphere, tension, and a mystery that tightens its grip with every chapter.

From the chilling opening scene on a lonely highway, the story sets a tone that never lets up. The discovery of Maria Reyes’s body is heartbreaking, and Hood handles the investigation with a balance of empathy and grit. The ranch setting is wonderfully eerie—isolated, hostile, and full of people who seem to know more than they’re willing to say. You can almost feel Jenna’s instincts prickling as she realises something deeply wrong has been happening there for far too long.

What I enjoyed most is how the plot threads slowly weave together: the cold case, the missing woman, the burned‑cabin mystery from years before. Each reveal lands with impact, and the sense of danger surrounding the team feels sharper than ever. The final act in the forest is tense, cinematic, and genuinely unsettling.

Even though this is part of a long‑running series, it works perfectly well as a standalone. The characters are easy to connect with, and the pacing keeps you turning pages long after you meant to stop.

A twisty, atmospheric thriller that fans of Lisa Regan and Melinda Leigh will devour. Hood knows exactly how to keep readers hooked, and this one doesn’t disappoint.

With thanks to DK Hood, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC

This book gives you three cases in one. For anyone following the series, I was finally able to read about Rhett and what happened with his family. I love when a long running series adds a new character and all the background flows in. You get the familiar and something new. And his story is interesting. His family was killed years ago on the ranch in mysterious circumstances.

In addition to Rhett there’s a missing person and a dead body, so all hands on deck. This was a nice chance to bring Beth Katz into the fold. She’s a little like the show Dexter. She’s an FBI agent and also a serial killer bringing vigilante justice to the really bad. I’m still processing my thoughts on her. I can’t decide whether to respect or root against her.

With all the cases, it was nice to have the entire team in the mix. I genuinely like reading about them and seeing them work tirelessly to solve the cases.

The pace was great and the cases were interesting. I liked the chapters from the missing person as it brought me extra information on the case.

I had the pleasure of an immersive read. Patricia Rodriguez narrates the audiobook. She does voices for all the characters but with all the different characters in the book, that alone didn’t help me follow. I had to pay attention to the story to keep tabs. I don’t often listen to a book with so many characters and it was an interesting change of pace to listen to a police procedural. Overall it was a great listen.

“It is a weak man who feels threatened or emasculated by a strong, competent, hard working woman, and Jenna and the team will take out the weak!”

Set ahead of July 4th, a man with the belief about a woman’s place, and it’s not working along side men as equals on a ranch, is teaching them a lesson is a brutal way.

With 3 cases on the go… FBI special agent Carter is in town to stay with Rhett and they call in Katz & styles from Rattlesnake Creek FBI office to assist.

Splitting the cold case into the death of Rhett’s parents, a case from the last book looking for other potential victims fed to pigs after a couple tried to kill Raven and were caught dragging him to the pen and the discovery of a new body on the ranch, are they separate or could they be connected.

Love when the full gang are involved! Although Jo and her daughter were at Disney and arrived for the July 4th get together.

Love when I can’t foresee everything that’s coming. I had worked one of the potential twists but not all! Love that!

All the pie talk kept giving me a hankering for a slice!

If you have not read any books in the series I recommend at least reading the book before this one or starting at book 1 as it brings a richness to the characters that you may not quite get reading as a standalone as your first encounter with the series.

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this awesome book

wow this book is high octane high hitting with action and just the right amount of jenna and dave with extras...... i mean this book has all the characters that we love plus our ever loving tarot card killer pycho beth katz so who ever could not like this book for all that .....

this one though is hard hitting and again dk hood pulls no punches for her poor cast and her victims i mean this time her victims are put through hell and some have waited years for jenna and dave to hear their stories.....

but this story wouldnt have been told without the appearance of rhett who had been orphaned at an early age...first his parents and then his grandparent are killed meaning he is sent away.... but his inheritance comes to him later and thats where the story of his parents and the letter rhett receives leads everyone to believe his parents were murdered... and its not long before jenna and dave start looking into it....

and thats when the first body is discovered....

ohhh man i inhaled this book when i started it and didnt put it down till i had finished it.... so many questions were answered in this book...

looking forward to the next book in this brilliant series ... cant wait

What a thrilling ride! Even after thirty books in the Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane series, this author still manages to keep the stories fresh, gripping, and impossible to put down.

From the chilling opening scene to the heart-pounding finale, the tension never lets up. The investigation is packed with twists, the atmosphere is wonderfully unsettling, and I found myself racing through the pages to discover the truth. The rural setting adds an extra layer of menace, making the danger feel all too real.

One of the things I continue to love most about this series is the characters. Jenna and Kane remain as compelling as ever, and it's incredible how the author continues to develop them so naturally after so many books. Their growth feels genuine, keeping the series engaging even for long-time readers.

I honestly don't know how she does it. Thirty books in, and she's still delivering stories that are every bit as exciting and addictive as the earlier installments. Fantastic storytelling, unforgettable characters, and relentless suspense make this another outstanding addition to one of my favorite crime series.

Nonstop suspense at the ranch🏞🐎🏚

This series just never gets stale or stops coming up with action and thrills in what they call "Serial Killer Central" Montana! This time it focuses on Rhett Lawson, a young man who's inherited a huge ranch and quickly learns that it appears to be a perfect place for a killer to dump victims. The historic tragic death of young Lawson's parents and a recent spate of disappearances of young female seasonal workers from the Lawson ranch both undergo investigation from Sheriff Alton's team and their friendly local FBI contingent. And the Tarot Card Killer (from the author's other Montana-based series) who stalks and kills criminals who have escaped justice even puts in an appearance. Good action, lots of potential suspects, a huge geographic area to cover and a key mistake from the killer that could lead to solving both cases. My interest never wavered. Plot-driven suspense at its best.

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Every instinct screams that something very sinister is happening here and when news breaks that another young woman is missing, Jenna knows she’s running out of time to find the girl before she too ends up in a woodland grave.
Book thirty in the series & another gripping thriller, there were plenty of edge of the seat moments & I found it hard to put down. I love Jenna & Dave & have loved how their relationship has developed throughout the series. I still get excited when a new book arrives which says how good the series is. Roll on book thirty one
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own

Jenna and Kane are investigating a cold case when a body is found buried on the ranch. It seems like someone in Serial Killer Central has been active for longer than they imagine. Plus, there are links to a case they investigated previously. How odd!

I certainly don't intend on moving to Black Rock Falls!! Ha!
Jenna and Kane are part of a fantastic, polished team that can crack every case they investigate. Every single person on the team contributes to solving cases, they all have their own specialities.

This is a tense, gory, unputdownable book. I read to the end in one sitting, and only got to sleep well after midnight. DK Hood, you can't keep doing this to me!! No, please carry on and release another in the series, I love the books!

Do yourself a favour and read the series from the beginning, you won't be disappointed.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book and the others.

5/5 stars.

This was a wild ride on the serial killer train. Jenna and Dave are setting up to help Rhett find out who killed his parents all those years ago. As they and their friends arrive to help, a body is found. The whole team is then assembled to figure out if this relates to the death of Rhett's parents or if they are looking at two totally different killers. Dave finds some clues in an old safe that Rhett found hidden in his father's closet. The staff on the ranch are not exactly welcoming which makes figuring out if they are a suspect or not difficult. As usual there are the twists and turns that have you scratching your head wondering how it all goes together. The ending is one you will not see coming. A good mystery makes the creepy okay but you still may be grateful the book is fiction. Highly recommend as it's a thrill ride of a mystery with a fantastic set of characters.

I truly enjoyed Nothing Stays Buried by D.K. Hood. This is book thirty in the series of Detective Kane and Alton. This one is about murder in the small town of Black Rock Falls, as they all are but , this one is about a serial murderer.

Women from a certain ranch have gone missing, and now with Marie Reyes, one of the hands at the ranch, she has yet to show up for her shift. As they say most ranch hands can't last for more than a week. They believe she has just taken off.

Zoe Carpenter is hiding in the woods hoping and praying that she won't be found by that awful man again. She wakes up by the river and hears voices and as she starts to stir she sees a house with lights on. As she slowly turns just to make sure she is safe, she bolts out for the house. As she gets there Tracy Howard and Cheryl Staton are there to rescue her. Or so she thinks until she hears the guys voice come for her and he is yelling for her and for them to let her go. Then shots are fired at the house.

Will Detective Kane and Alton along with the FBI get to her in time and will they figure out who the taro card murderer is?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was a complete who did it and why kind of read and no I had no idea who it was. D.K.Hood always writes rich characters and ones that you can't stand to see make in life when they are the murderers, I love all of her regular characters, I really love the Beth character hope she builds on her.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC! I also thank you for the audible and the book!

Sheriff Jenna Alton and her husband Deputy Dave Kane have been invited to look into the death of a friend's parents. Rhett's parents were discovered in a burnt out cabin on their large ranch when he was very young. The belief had always been that they entered the cabin to shelter from thunderstorm and a lightning strike set it alight and they were burnt to death. Now Rhett has discovered a letter from his father which sets out his suspicions that a serial killer was operating on his ranch. When evidence contradicting this story and the discovery of a young woman's body has all the team, including Alton & Kane's FBI colleagues, working on both investigations.

This is another great story in this series - I've thoroughly enjoyed reading them all and look forward to reading more soon.

Thanks to Netgalley UK, Bookouture and D K Hood for the eARC of this book in return for an honest review.

Black Rock Falls, is perfectly described as "Serial Killer Central" and for good reason.

This is book thirty in this universe and nothing is as it seems. The crew hits the ground running in this book and within a few chapters they are working on three different cases, and surprisingly all are interlinked and the deeper they go, secrets start unraveling.

It was a page turner, it kept you guessing and with our favourite FBI agents joining...well you knew it was going to be good.

Loved this addition, and was glad with all the answers to prior questions.

Can't wait to see what's next for this crew.

A chilling read that keeps you reading past bedtime!
A cold case and a new murder made for a great story and brought our FBI friends in to help. I love seeing Katz and Styles make an appearance because you never know what Katz might get up to. Well paced, action packed, tense and full of surprises made it impossible to put down. I really enjoy the team dynamics and that there is always bits of home life in each book. I believe that the great stories and continued character development have kept this series fresh.
I am looking forward to the next book.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC.

Nothing Stays Buried is suspense, mystery and a thriller. Wowza this one had me pulling my feet up off the floor and making sure doors were locked. We got to have moments of peace and joy with Dave, and Jenna and the whole gang! I mean everyone except JO. She is in Disneyland with her daughter. Katz and Styles are there too. Thinds are evolving all the way around, members and family. Anxiously awaiting the next one already. Loved being able to read and listen, thank you for allowing me the Audio and book through NetGalley, thank you Bookouture! Wow I can’t believe we’re on book 30 in this brilliant crime series.
This is definitely one of my favourite books in the series as DK Hood brings all the characters together in this story.
Whilst in some books it’s centred around Jenna, Kane and Wolfe, in this one we have Carter, Styles, Beth, Rhett and a few more!
The group discover a woman’s body buried on Rhett’s property and when they look into this further they discover women working on the ranch have been going missing for years.
This is a brilliant read and a series that I’d highly recommend.
Thanks to Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book.

The story starts out with Jenna and Dave investigating a cold case - that of the death of Rhett Lawson's parents over 20 years ago. But before they can get very far, a dead body is discovered on the ranch. This leads to Jenna having to split the team between the cold case and the current dead body, with the question in the back of their minds as to whether the two cases can be connected.

I love that this series still seems fresh even though we can anticipate their being a serial killer, help from the FBI, plenty of danger, a fast-pace, and some twists along the way. This story had me riveted from the beginning and trying to anticipate who the killer was.
