German philologist and folklorist Jakob Ludwig Karl Grimm in 1822 formulated Grimm's Law, the basis for much of modern comparative linguistics. With his brother Wilhelm Karl Grimm (1786-1859), he collected Germanic folk tales and published them as Grimm's Fairy Tales (1812-1815).

Indo-European stop consonants, represented in Germanic, underwent the regular changes that Grimm's Law describes; this law essentially states that Indo-European p shifted to Germanic f, t shifted to th, and k shifted to h. Indo-European b shifted to Germanic p, d shifted to t, and g shifted to k. Indo-European bh shifted to Germanic b, dh shifted to d, and gh shifted to g.

This jurist and mythologist also authored the monumental German Dictionary and his Deutsche Mythologie .

Another book that I hadn't ever read this one about a child whose brother thought was simple but as in most fairy tales the meet inherit the world. A good story that I liked a lot.

This tale has a bit of a twist- it's the princess here who, in a way, rescues her "prince." It's extraordinarily rare to see a story where the fair maiden isn't the one being rescued. In fact, this might be a first in my reading. Here, one of the three apprentices of the Miller, named Stupid Hans, is sent with the two others to find a fine horse for the miller, who wants to retire. Hans, after he is abandoned by the other two, encounters a talking cat, who takes him on as a servant. Mild spoiler- the cat winds up being a princess. Now, it's not clear whether she was under enchantment or if this was a voluntary state of being but I don't mind the ambiguity. In fact, a part of me hopes it was the latter. One interesting details is that the princess cat isn't perfect, either but I won't give away that spoiler. It made me laugh, though.

The original tale is much better but also darker then the version kids see.

It is different but not that different from what you might remember from first hearing this tale as a kid.

The plot here are very good but also dark which is the mix which I personally like a lot.

The writing style here was very old and you could feel the vibe of old the Europe which but it also felt like there was something missing.

Again, another recurring theme, going away with a stranger for seven years. There seems to be some kind of meaning or significance for Grimm for repeating such things.

This is a rehash of similar stories, instead of the devil it’s a cat. Three brothers, the third seemingly dim witted who the other two want to use and manipulate.
