This is excellent detailed description and life of giraffes, also known as "The Gentle Giants." Take a ride in a super safari truck with the author and you'll learn why giraffes have long necks. They are also the tallest of animals at 16 to 20 feet tall, and weigh 1,800 to 2,600 pounds. Stay in the truck! You don't want your toes stepped on! Their eyes are large and they can see colors. They can close their noses to keep bugs out and they have little knobs on their heads resembling horns, but are called ossicones. My, that almost sounds like ice cones! Baby giraffes don't have long necks at birth, but it grows longer as they mature. Do you know why the necks are so long? Yes, it helps them see far distances and maybe see a predator, but it mainly gives them the best tasting leafs on tall trees. There is so much more here in this wonderful guide to realize how different and unique giraffes are from other animals in the wild kingdom. Enjoy the fun facts at the end of the book. You'll enjoy reading this book as well as all the others in the Amazing Animal Kingdom Series. This makes a wonderful collection for youngsters of all ages.
Another great informative book in the series about the animals we share our world with. I have to admit that before reading this one about Giraffes, I didn't know how they slept, how to tell if male or female, what their 'horns' were for and much more besides...
I normally love the books that Emma C puts out. This one is wonderful, but has a few inaccuracies.
Giraffes don't have four stomachs. They have one stomach that has four parts. They are called ruminants. A little more should be said to define a ruminant. Chalk it up to slightly lax research, her books have been very accurate in the past.
The pictures are clear, most of the information is true. It is a cute story, but please, do your homework. Do not tell your children that giraffes have four stomachs!
I was surprised to learn from GIRAFFES: Fun Facts & Amazing Photos of Animals in Nature ~ Amazing Animal Kingdom ~ Book 15 that the giraffe can see colors, as so many animals are colorblind. Emma Child has put together another wonderful science books for children to learn about the Giraffe. She covers what they look like and how they are unique, what they eat and where they live in an interesting pretend safari.
Review: GIRAFFES by Emna Child [AMAZING ANIMAL KINGDOM BOOK 15]
Author Emma Child's heart for animals and communicating to children the diversity and importance of Earth' s animal kingdom shine through in every entry of her amazing children's series, AMAZING ANIMAL KINGDOM. GIRAFFES is no exception. Every entry is full of new learning. I'm so glad my grandchildren can benefit, and only wish my children could have read these.
“GIRAFFES: Fun Facts and Amazing Photos of Animals in Nature (Amazing Animal Kingdom #15)" by Emma Child is a book about Giraffes. You will learn some fun facts about them, how they live, what they eat, etc. This book is really informative, and I would read it again. I would also recommend this book to everyone.
Good photos, which easily magnify in the kindle edition, and easy to read facts and fun about giraffes. There is something here for children and adults. (Note: Adults may need to read this to their young nature lover).
Like most women, I've always envied the giraffe for its long, graceful neck and photogenic eyelashes, but the news that giraffe pregnancies can last up to 15 months gives me pause. And only sleeping ten minutes to two hours in a day wouldn't suit me at all.
Like most people, I thought that the giraffe's neck was it's most awe-inspiring feature until I had an opportunity to hand feed some. You can't really grasp the reality of a twenty-inch tongue until one reaches out and gently takes a carrot away from you. I remember that everyone on the (very tall) feeding platform looked exactly as stunned as I felt.
The giraffe is one of the most readily recognizable and most popular animals in the world and much is written about them, but (as always) Ms. Child's research is impeccable and I learned some new facts. Who knew that a giraffe can go longer without water than a camel or that the pattern of each giraffe's coat is as individual as a fingerprint?
The next time I see giraffes I will be even more appreciative of their uniqueness and feel even more privileged to be in their presence. That's what education is all about, isn't it?
Emma Child has done it again with a wonderful science non-fiction book for young children with Giraffes: Fun Facts & Amazing Photos of Animals in Nature. Giraffes are such cool animals with their long necks and tongues and individual spot patterns.
