A Witch, a Cat, and a Corpse: A Harper & Zeus Paranormal Cozy Mystery

Rate this book
A grandmother's funeral. A suspicious death. And a cat with a God complex.

Harper Sinclair came to Willow Creek to bury Nora and get back to her desk by Monday.

When her grandmother died, the magic she buried came crashing back. Lies land on Harper’s skin like sparks. Dark magic crawls under her nerves like ice.

There's no time to figure it out. Not when cold, condescending Cordelia Blackwood drops dead at the funeral reception after drinking a cup of tea. Her nephew is scrambling to cover gambling debts. The herbalist knew Cordelia's habits better than anyone.

Whoever killed her didn't panic. They mingled. They smiled. They stayed for dessert.

The sheriff calls it a heart attack. Harper touched the body. He's wrong.

Her reluctant partner? Zeus, Nora's insufferable silver Maine Coon familiar. He's made it clear he's a partner, not a retriever. She’s been told to adjust her expectations.

As she digs deeper, someone realizes she’s getting too close. The next cup of tea could be meant for her.

A Witch, a Cat, and a Corpse by Ruby Roselake is an incredibly enjoyable mystery that perfectly balances a supernatural premise with an engaging, well-paced investigation.

The story follows Harper Sinclair, a woman stuck in a mind-numbing desk job who unexpectedly finds her life upended when she travels to Willow Creek to bury her grandmother, Nora.

Before she even opens the letter summoning her home, she knows instinctively that her grandmother has passed, marking the beginning of her discovery that magic is not only real but runs in her blood.

Harper soon learns that the magic Nora had kept bound for years to protect her has been released. The atmosphere shifts from mourning to danger when the cold and condescending Cordelia Blackwood drops dead after a cup of tea at the funeral reception.

While the sheriff dismisses it as a heart attack, Harper knows the truth because she felt the dark magic during her final contact with the body.

As she digs deeper, she uncovers a web of secrets involving gambling debts and suspicious herbalists, realizing that whoever committed the crime is still mingling with the crowd.

Her journey is made even more memorable by her reluctant new partner, Zeus, an insufferable and silver-tongued Maine Coon familiar. He makes it clear from the start that he is an equal partner rather than a simple pet, and his sharp, sarcastic personality provides a fantastic counterweight to Harper’s own struggle to find her footing.

Their dynamic is one of the highlights of the book, as they work together to solve a murder that is clearly closing in on them both.

This story is a perfect escape for anyone who loves a cozy mystery with a magical twist. It blends the emotional weight of a family loss with the thrill of a high-stakes investigation.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Harper navigate her newfound abilities while sleuthing alongside such an opinionated feline companion.

If you are looking for a story that is witty, tense, and undeniably charming, this is an excellent pick that kept me hooked until the final page.

This book puts the “cozy” in “Cozy Mystery”. The story seems a little flat in the beginning, but really develops along the way as the main character learns more about her family and her powers.
Zeus - well, what can I say? He’s quite a character! Not snarky or sarcastic, just completely convinced of his own superiority and everyone else’s fallibility.
******
“Cats have better manners.”
“Cats have selective manners. You knocked a lamp off my dresser yesterday.”
“That lamp was poorly positioned. I was performing a public service.”
*******
He’s hilarious without even trying!

Harper didn't expected to inherit all of her grandmother's worldly goods AND to find out that she is a witch  at the same time.

Part of the inheritance is her familar Zeus. A witty, opionated and  snarky Maine Coon with standards.

When Cordelia drops dead during Harpers Grandmother's funeral, she receives signs that it is not a natural death and decides to investigate together with Martha and Zeus.

This is a very good mystery. Harper is a witch but she doesn't know it. She starts to gather clues to prove a man is guilty of murder. Can she prove it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This in no way affects my opinion of this book.

Every witch needs their own Zeus

A very good murder mystery with an interesting premise: a young woman finds out that magic is real, she has a very interesting inheritance, and a special cat is about to become an important part of her life. It was a very enjoyable read.
