I was gifted a copy of Liminal because the giver sees me in a season of life between one place God wanted me and where He wants me to be sometime in the future. I have come to the conclusion that there is no “in between time,” liminal space with God in our lives. He is always working His good purpose in our lives regardless of the circumstances we may be facing.
The author provided saccharine that sounded good but for the person authentically doing their best to follow God, false expectations were set about what God will or will not do. For example, God doesn’t speak to every one of His followers through dreams. Count how many people in the Bible God spoke to in a dream versus the people He didn’t. God knows we are unique individuals and works in us in unique ways. Yet, Neil did not caution people that just because He spoke to him via a dream that does not mean God will speak to everyone that way.
I was also concerned that the author engaged in what is called proof texting. He took a statement from the Bible out of the context in which it was written and ascribed a different meaning to the phrase. We observe this in the news and social media where a snippet of what a politician, dignitary, or famous person said, but it was pulled out of the context of a speech, interview, article, or book and presented to mean something the speaker or author did not intend.
The gem you will find in Liminal is to listen to God communicating to you. His followers will hear His voice.
