A totally gripping thriller packed with suspense

A killer stalking little children in the peaceful suburbs. And a rookie FBI agent desperate to prove herself in her hometown.

Special Agent Nichelle Wilkinson has always had to fight for her place in the world. Growing up bouncing between foster homes after a tragic accident took her twin sister and decorated beat-cop father, she’s learned to be scrappy.

With a specialism in forensics, Nichelle made a name for herself in the Outer Banks as a seasoned crime scene investigator. But now, she’s back home in Philadelphia to hunt a killer. Eleven-year-old Jenni Croft was stolen from her bed, a prayer card with a chilling message left amongst her pink sheets. Nichelle knows what it’s like to be forgotten and alone and she’ll never let that happen to Jenni.

When the investigation throws her together with her father’s old partner, she realizes the full story about the day her father died is darker than she ever imagined. Torn between the pressure of the case and digging into her past, Nichelle knows she needs to prove herself now if she’s ever going to live up to her father’s name.

As a surprise eyewitness tip off takes Nichelle and her team to an abandoned building on the wrong side of town, Nichelle will have to surrender herself to the shadows to find a depraved killer. And maybe the part of her that died with her family fifteen years ago…

Stolen Grace is the first in a gripping new thriller series. Fans of Lisa Regan, Elle Gray and Kendra Elliot will be totally hooked!

Stolen Grace by B.R. Spangler was a great introduction to this author’s work. The writing is superb, the characters are well developed, and the investigation unfolds at a steady pace that keeps the suspense building. It has all the components of a solid police procedural.

That said, I personally struggled with the subject matter involving children a bit. Some of the scenes were truly gut-wrenching and unsettling. In my opinion, the author’s writing is strong enough that the story could have delivered the same emotional weight without centering on children.

The audiobook narration by Elise Roth was wonderful and added to the tension and emotional intensity of the story. She did a very good job overall, though I did find myself wishing the production had included multiple narrators. Since this is a police procedural with different perspectives, having more than one narrator might have helped distinguish the voices even more clearly.

Overall, an intriguing and emotionally intense thriller, and I would definitely read more from this author.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for providing me with an advance listening copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Stolen Grace is book 1 in a new series featuring Special Agent Nichelle Wilkinson. I'm so excited that this is going to be a series because the first book was so gripping I couldn't put it down! B.R. Spangler has created characters that you'll fall in love with and root for while holding your breath when they're in dangerous situations. Nichelle Wilkinson has returned to Philadelphia for the first time since her family was killed in an accident. She then spent the rest of her childhood in foster homes. She's back as she's accepted a job to join the FBI after being a detective in the Outer Banks.

This book packs a serious punch as young children are disappearing and ending up dead within 2 days with their hearts removed. The killer pries open their chest with tools and removes their heart as some sort of trophy. Nichelle's first case as a Special Agent for the FBI is a horrific one. It hits close to home when Nichelle has to interview the families of the missing children. She knows just how they feel when she has to let them know that their loved one has been killed. When Nichelle gets closer to the killer, things take a turn close to home. Will she be able to find the child before the 2 days is up?

I dare you to start this book and be able to stop reading it! It is one of the best first books of a series that I've ever read! That ending left me wanting book 2 now! I sure hope B.R. Spangler is hard at work writing book 2 in this awesome new series! I thoroughly enjoyed this suspenseful read and I rate Stolen Grace 5 stars with my very highest recommendation! I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of Stolen Grace in exchange for a fair review. #StolenGrace

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

This thriller was so well done! I loved how this story just pulled me right in and how quickly the narrative moved. Nichelle’s past was so intriguing and I want to know more about it and I love how she uses her own experiences to inform her about the case she is working on. The crimes in this book were gruesome and terrifying to live through, but this thriller was so well done and the twists were great.

Despite it being listed as the first book in a new series, there is a lot of backstory and a traumatic case that is mentioned multiple times throughout this crime/mystery novel. So much so, that I felt like I had missed something big. Nevertheless, I was able to follow and enjoy this story that starts with the discovery of a mother and her teen daughter found dead, quickly followed by another case of a missing mother and teen daughter. Add to that, the detective and her husband recently gained custody of a teen girl, making them extra-sensitive to the plight of mothers and girls. Some confusing (to me) time jumps and counter-positioning of the storylines kept me from giving this five stars. Still, it was an interesting reveal as layers of clues were peeled away to reveal the heart of the mystery. I will likely read (ie listen to) more in this series. Narration is good on the audiobook. 4.4 rounded down.
My thanks to the author, publisher, @BookoutureAudio, and #NetGalley for early access to the audiobook #StolenGrace for review purposes. Publication date: 22 April 2026.

You know that feeling when a thriller opens and you’re like, “Oh this is going to ruin my emotional stability, isn’t it?” Yeah. Stolen Grace wasted absolutely no time letting me know I was about to have a bad time in the most compulsively listenable way possible.

We’ve got Special Agent Nichelle Wilkinson, who is not just entering her FBI era, she is entering her “returning to my hometown where all my unresolved trauma lives like it pays rent” era. This woman has baggage. Not cute carry-on baggage, I’m talking full carousel at baggage claim, nothing matches, something is definitely leaking. Her dad was a cop, her twin sister died, her entire childhood is basically one long episode of “this needed therapy and did not receive it.”

And instead of easing back into life, she’s immediately thrown into a case involving abducted children. CHILDREN. Like the book really said, “Let’s pick the most emotionally devastating crime category and just… live there.” And then it adds this creepy religious element with prayer cards left at the scenes, like the killer is trying to win “Most Disturbing Youth Pastor Energy” of the year. It is grim. It is heavy. It is not playing around.

But here’s the thing, I was locked in. Against my will, fully invested, mentally red-string-boarding every suspect like I had access to FBI databases and not just vibes. The pacing hits that sweet spot once it gets going, where you’re like “just one more chapter” and suddenly you’ve been sitting in your car for 20 minutes after parking because you need to know if this abandoned building situation is about to ruin everyone’s life.

The team dynamics? Honestly, kind of delicious. Nichelle working with Detective Chen and Denoto has that slightly chaotic, slightly exhausted, “we are all one bad day away from snapping but we will solve this case first” energy. And then you throw in her father’s old partner and suddenly it’s not just a case, it’s a full-blown emotional excavation project. Because of course the past is messier than she thought. It’s always messier.

Now let’s talk audiobook, because Elise Roth deserves her flowers. She is out here doing emotional heavy lifting like she’s being paid per feeling. There’s this grounded intensity to her performance that makes Nichelle feel more layered, more human, more like someone who is holding it together with duct tape and sheer willpower. You can hear the restraint, the anger, the grief simmering under the surface. It adds a depth that honestly made me more forgiving of some of the book’s rougher edges.

Because yes, there are edges. This is very much a “first book in a series stretching its legs” situation. Some character development feels like it’s queued up for later, like we’re getting the pilot episode version of everyone. And the twists… listen. I respect ambition. I do. But at one point it felt like the story was stacking reveals like it was trying to win a game of narrative Jenga. A couple of them hit, a couple of them had me blinking like “wait, we’re doing this now?”

Also, and I say this with my whole chest, the emotional storyline about Nichelle’s past? That’s the good stuff. That’s the thing I was leaning forward for. The mystery is compelling, yes, but the real hook is this woman trying to piece together what actually happened to her family while solving crimes that mirror her own trauma. It’s messy, it’s painful, it’s exactly the kind of character work that’s going to pay off big if the series leans into it.

By the end, I was fully in that dangerous place where I’m already mentally penciling in time for book two like I don’t have other responsibilities. It got me. Not cleanly, not perfectly, but effectively. So yeah, four stars. Dark, gripping, occasionally chaotic, but absolutely worth the ride, especially in audio where Elise Roth is out here elevating everything like a one-woman emotional support system.

Whodunity Award: The “Everyone Is Suspicious and I Trust Absolutely No One, Including This Nice Old Man” Trophy

And thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for the ALC, you really said “enjoy your day” and then handed me emotional damage in audio form.

Dark, Disturbing Spinoff Starter With Meat. In a first in my experience with Spangler, this is a book where there is a lot of interesting theological discussion *just* below the surface of this tale - hidden enough so that you can enjoy the actual story as told without diving too deep, but also obvious enough that it is fairly easy to follow Spangler's thinking for anyone who chooses to do so. That is the "meat" here - there really is a lot to ponder, and at least through certain sections of the tale, Spangler really makes you wrestle with a big theological word you rarely see outside of church... if you choose to do so.

If you don't want to wrestle with your theological outlook, this is still, on a more surface level, a dark and disturbing thriller from a guy that is known for his dark and disturbing thrillers in his Detective Casey White series (where this spins off from, but which is only tangentially referenced - a few times -in this text). Yet as dark as some of the books in the other series got - and they got *dark* at times - this one somehow manages to go *even more dark*, to damn near approaching vantablack levels. Perhaps saved from being *that* dark more by the ages of the child victims here at least primarily being teenagers rather than even younger.

There is a *lot* here that won't be for the squeamish at all. Saw level gory murders, shown after the fact. An act that was at least somewhat more common - at least in news reports - about 60 yrs ago or so in a specific context (but this is about as close as I can get without going more full spoiler). Fade to black #MeToo level stuff. Oh, and the entire premise of this story being based on at least one version of Christianity - the "prayer card" from the description - though I'll refrain from elaborating on which one. Suffice it to say that it too has been in the news over the years, but that actually doesn't reveal much, if anything. ;) Point being, if you're one that for whatever reason cannot/ willnot read any books with any mention of any aspect of Christianity at all... this book may not be for you. On the flip side, that prayer card was a clue to a murder in the description, so that too points in a direction where if you're one that can't read any book where that direction may be in play... also may not be the book for you.

But for fans of truly *dark* thrillers... yeah, again, you really don't get much darker than some of the shit that happens in this book. So for that crowd in particular, y'all are going to LOVE this.

Also, Spangler's fans who have been reading the Casey White books for years... as I mentioned earlier, this is very much in that same general mindset, and in fact is really close to being effectively a way to start over in that series without actually starting over or resetting anything. Truly a nice and interesting pivot of focus that allows for a lot more stories within the same overall world.

Ultimately, again, this book will NOT be for everyone. But for those who can at minimum tolerate this kind of tale, it is a really strong one. Either way, it does an excellent job of introducing us to this particular character and her world, and yes, it sets up Book 2 (apparently scheduled for roughly six months after the publication of this book) rather explosively.

Very much recommended.

I live in Southern California but was born and raised in a small Appalachian town. Vacation at the Outer Banks in Nags Heads many times and have many wonderful memories. I truly enjoy stories when the Outer Banks is the setting. Although this story is not set in the Outer Banks but our protagonist Rookie FBI Special Agent Nichelle Wilkinson has just moved from the Outer Banks of North Carolina to her hometown of Philadelphia.
Nichelle’s parents and twin sister Noelle were killed when she was young, and she bounced between foster homes for years. She has specialized in forensics and made a name for herself in North Carolina as a crime scene investigator.

In this story ~ A killer is stalking young children in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Agent Nichelle Wilkinson is new to Philadelphia Office and is working with her father’s old partner Bosco, who is preparing to retire. They are working closely with Philadelphia police Detective Chen and Officer Denoto. The latest abduction is of eleven-year-old Jenni Croft who was stolen from her bed. The kidnapper left a prayer card with a message on the sheets.
The abductor continues taking young preteens and leaves a note such “Thank You for your Grace”. Additionally, the abductor seems to be familiar with the religious activities at the local church.

I did struggle with the dark side of children being assaulted and/or murdered also the description and gory details. Plus, Detective Chen’s language was also fouler than I wanted to hear.
However, I was curious and hung in there and as whodunit got very interesting as well as why!

I enjoyed other stories by B.R. Spangler so was sure she wouldn’t let me down.
I love thrillers and know police procedures stories are typically more negative, I should have expected this story would be as well!

Although I didn’t like the dark disturbing parts I do like Agent Nichelle Wilkinson so already want to read Book #2 in this series! I am sure there will be more about what happen to her parents and twin sister as her father’s old partner Bosco hinted about knowing Nichelle wants to solve the mystery as to what really happened.

I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for this audiobook.

OK. I was definitely not expecting THIS!

This was a whole can of worms opened up that I never asked for! And yet, felt compelled to keep reading. To keep being tormented. To keep feeling horrified… To keep wondering why? And who? And, why…again…

This one hits home and hits hard… like, it bulldozes you… right in the heart.
Because this one deals with kids. Young kids. Being abducted, tortured, killed… and in an absolutely horrible way.

And, we have a brand spanking new FBI Agent, in the way of Nichelle Wilkinson. She’s no dummy. She has a history. And, her Dad was a cop too. But today is day #1 of her new job with the bureau… and her assignment is a doozy.

But not to worry…she has backup in Chen and DeNoto. Together they are GOING to figure out who is behind this! They can just feel it in their bones! But…Will they all make it out on the other side…alive?

And as they start narrowing in on the culprit, I thought I had some ideas on what was going on. I was wrong! I did not have a clue…. And it felt like I just kept digging deeper holes myself!

Add in a priest, and multiple Confirmations going on (although I still don’t understand why they kept mentioning white dresses and gloves for the girls? That is definitely NOT Confirmation clothing… that’s for Communions!) Then throw in some psychotic people… as well as an entire town that wants to get to the bottom of this ASAP! And you have quite the horror story in the making…

Of Note: This is book #1 in the series, and it’s being released on 4/22/26!

#StolenGrace by @BRSpangler and narrated phenomenally and with wonderful emotion by @EliseRoth.

4 solid, scary, horrific, incredible, amazing, blazing stars for me! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Stolen Grace is a gripping, character‑driven thriller that pulls you in from the very first chapter. Nichelle Wilkinson is the kind of heroine you root for instantly — sharp, scrappy, and carrying the kind of past that leaves quiet shadows in every room she walks into. The author captures her resilience beautifully, layering her forensic expertise with the vulnerability of someone who’s had to fight for every inch of her life.

The case itself is chilling: eleven‑year‑old Jenni Croft taken from her bed, a prayer card left behind like a taunt. There’s a haunting intimacy to the way Nichelle approaches the investigation, shaped by her own history of loss and abandonment. You can feel her determination, her refusal to let another child slip through the cracks the way she once did. It gives the story a steady emotional heartbeat beneath the procedural tension.

Returning to Philadelphia forces Nichelle to confront more than just a killer. The reappearance of her father’s old partner — and the secrets he’s been sitting on — adds a compelling second thread. The truth about her father’s death unravels slowly, with the kind of quiet dread that makes you lean in closer. The past and present collide in a way that feels organic, raising the stakes without ever overwhelming the central mystery.

The pacing is tight, the atmosphere gritty without being bleak, and the sense of danger builds beautifully as the investigation leads Nichelle into the darker corners of the city. The abandoned building sequence is especially tense — a moment where the shadows feel almost alive, and Nichelle’s courage becomes something fierce and deeply personal.

As the first in a new series, Stolen Grace sets the stage brilliantly. It’s emotional, suspenseful, and anchored by a heroine with real depth — someone you want to follow into the next case, and the next.

A compelling start to a series that promises heart, grit, and the kind of tension that keeps you reading long into the night.

Wow, talk about intense. This book certainly takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions and I loved every minute.

I am a cozy mystery fan at heart but sometimes I fancy something with a bit more of a punch or a blurb will catch my eye, this book did both. So glad it did because it didn't disappoint. Nichelle made for a great main character, she might be a brand new FBI agent but with her compassion, skill and determination she can certainly get the job done, especially in a fast moving and emotionally charged case. I liked the way she had to work out the connection between them all. I did hesitate with the victims being young children but that wasn't what brought a tear to my eye. Instead with most of the kidnappings having already taken place and the bodies found, I was caught up in the case and the struggle to find the most recent missing. The deaths were a bit brutal but it was more the idea of it, rather than the author going in gruesome details. The blurb did make the story sound like she would be looking into her own family case but to be honest it mainly focused on the children. I am sure as the series develops she will learn more, which is why I am looking forward to the next investigation.

After the death of her parents and twin sister, Special Agent Nichelle Wilkinson returns to her home town for the first time since the tragedy. The disappearance and resulting bodies of several children soon has her full attention. With only one known survivor, who is currently in jail, Nichelle and her new team will have there work cut out for them trying to find the latest victim in time. Can she work out the connection between the victims or work out why the killer chooses them in particular? With the clock ticking, she learns she only has a short window of time before the next child is taken and looses there heart.
I liked the narrator. She made the characters come to life with grace and style and I enjoyed listening to her.

Stolen Grace launches a new series with a strong, well-executed thriller. It follows Special Agent Nichelle Wilkinson, a fierce and determined rookie FBI agent who returns to her hometown to investigate a disturbing abduction case while confronting the lingering shadows of her past. The details of the crimes are both haunting and emotionally gripping. One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its character development—Nichelle isn’t just a tough investigator, but a layered protagonist dealing with loss and abandonment. The exploration of her connection to her father’s past adds meaningful depth to her motivations, and I’m especially eager to see how that thread unfolds in future installments.

The writing is fast-paced and immersive, with vivid descriptions that bring each scene to life without sacrificing suspense. Well-placed twists build toward a satisfying and impactful climax.

As the first entry in this series, the novel delivers a gritty, suspenseful story packed with tension and surprises. While it’s darker and more graphic than my usual preference, it was incredibly hard to put down. Sensitive readers may find some themes intense.

Overall, it’s a chilling and emotionally charged read, full of unexpected turns and a few genuine surprises. The pacing remains brisk, and the vivid storytelling keeps the momentum strong. The dramatic ending, along with the final chapter, hints at what’s to come next.

The audiobook narrator, Elise Roth, does an outstanding job, enhancing the tension and bringing the story’s twists and emotions vividly to life.

In all, this is a dark, gripping, and memorable novel with a compelling lead character. I’m looking forward to the next book, as well as exploring the author’s Casey White series.

The only downside—though maybe not entirely a bad thing—was that NetGalley uploaded the wrong audio files, so I ended up going through it twice!

Thank you to B.R. Spangler, Bookouture Audio, and NetGalley for the ALC x 2!!!

As a child, Nichelle lost her policeman father, mother, and sister in an accident and was repeatedly shuffled from one foster home to another. She is now an FBI agent newly assigned to Philadelphia. Her first case involves collaborating with the local police to hunt down a serial killer who abducts children and brutally cuts out their hearts. There’s a sinister religious undertone to his twisted ritual, and another female child remains missing, her body still undiscovered. It’s uncertain whether this case is connected to the serial killer.

Amidst this investigation, Nichelle’s quest for answers about her family’s untimely deaths resurfaces. She finds herself back in her father’s old precinct and working with one of her father’s colleagues; perhaps she’ll finally uncover the truth behind her family’s demise.

This is the inaugural installment in a new series featuring Agent Nichelle Wilkinson. It’s a gritty, suspenseful tale, filled with twists and turns that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. While it is a bit more intense and graphic than my usual reading preferences, I couldn’t put it down. The theme may be a bit dark for some more sensitive readers.

Nichelle’s character is well developed and I like her. I look forward to the next installment in this series as the ending is a perfect set up to a sequel.

This is the first book I have read by BR Spangler, but for those familiar with him, it is my understanding that this may be a spin off series as Nichelle Wilkinson was introduced in the Casey White series, set on the Outer Banks.

I was really excited when I spotted this new release coming as I'd read this author before and really enjoyed the writing style - but had started that series quite a way through.

It didn't matter too much - but I couldn't wait to get my teeth into this new series featuring Agent Nichelle Wilkinson

I instantly warmed to Nichelle as it was clear that she had something in her last that was haunting her - some family trauma that had occurred right where she had been posted to investigate a particularly nasty case.

A serial killer was targeting young children and after keeping them a few days, was leaving them staged and minus their hearts.

Nichelle, only a rookie, was determined to prove she deserved her new position and put everything into working with her new team and finding the current missing child.

I really liked the format of this plot because we don't follow leads and get sent down wrong paths too much. As the story unfolds, things are resolved fairly swiftly and this keeps us racing through and hopefully for the case being solved.

This meant I never felt frustrated with the case or the detectives and found that the case developed naturally.

Nichelle was professional, determined and empathetic too which made her way with the suspects feel respectful - she certainly understood how to read people - both guilty and not!

The case was full of twists and this kept me guessing until close to the reveal.

A great read and I loved that the ending brings us full circle, almost giving us more information about Nichelle's past - but keeping us dangling and ready to dive into book 2.

A “divine” start to a new series!

Stolen Grace is book one in a gripping new series by B. R. Spangler. If you have read the Detective Casey White series, you have already been introduced to the lead character, Nichelle Wilkinson. After working in the Outer Banks with Casey and her team, she has taken the opportunity to join the FBI as an agent based in Philadelphia (though you don’t need to have read the previous series to enjoy this book).

Day one on the job and Nichelle is handed a case to work with the local PD, Detective Chen and Officer Denoto. It is a case that will have them racing the clock to save innocent children from a gruesome end while trying to unravel the motive behind these heinous acts. The story will have you on the edge of your seat as the plot unfolds, sparking deep emotions and leaving you hanging for the next installment.

While Nichelle is working her first case, her return to Philly is bringing back memories from her childhood, happier days with her family before her parents and twin sister died when she was twelve and she entered the foster system. A lingering question has stayed with her: What really happened to her family all those years ago? This is a mystery that is likely to unravel over the coming books in the series. With the initial background set, I know I will be coming back for more until I know the truth behind her family’s passing.

Warning – this does contain very dark and disturbing murder scenes related to children.

Stolen Grace by B.R. Spangler is a gripping police procedural and crime thriller that is full of tension. A killer is stalking young children in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Rookie FBI Special Agent Nichelle Wilkinson is moving from the Outer Banks of North Carolina to her home town of Philadelphia. She’s immediately paired with her father’s old partner Bosco, who is preparing to retire. They are working closely with Philadelphia police Detective Chen and Officer Denoto. The latest abduction is of eleven-year-old Jenni Croft who was stolen from her bed. The kidnapper left a prayer card with a chilling message on the sheets.

Nichelle’s parents and twin sister were killed when she was young and she bounced between foster homes for years. She has specialized in forensics and has a made a name for herself in North Carolina as a seasoned crime scene investigator. After starting in cybercrime, she then moved to homicide and specialized in serial killer cases. She tends to trust her instincts. I wanted a little more depth to Nichelle’s character, but it was a good start for the first in a new series. Readers of the author’s Casey White series will already be familiar with Nichelle.

This was a chilling and heart-wrenching story that kept me rapidly turning the pages. It is full of twists and turns with a few surprises along the way. It’s also an emotional read that is intense and disturbing at times. The pace is relatively fast-paced and the descriptions were vivid without slowing the flow of the story. The ending was dramatic and the final chapter gives a hint of a thread for the next book.

Overall, this is a dark, gritty, and engrossing novel with a memorable main character. I can’t wait to read the next one as well as the author’s Casey White series.

a rookie fbi agent returns to her hometown to hunt a killer who kidnaps children and cuts out their hearts
I had so much fun reading this one. I really loved the plot and the writing style, it was fast paced just how I like my books, it kept me hooked from the very first page and once I started I just couldn’t stop till I finished it.
The ending was a bit predictable but still surprising. . I like when the killer is introduced very early on not just at the very end.
I didn’t like how there wasn’t enough about her family’s story, I assumed from the description that there was going to be more of that and it was somehow tied to the kidnappings/murders, but it turns out it was just setting for the next book (I didn’t know that it was a part of a series till the very end. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for the next one, I’m dying to know what happened to Nichelle’s family and I know I’ll enjoy it as much I enjoyed this one).
In all I still really liked it, definitely a 4.5 star read and I highly recommend it, but make sure to check the trigger warnings before reading it, it does get a bit too gory and I’m not talking about the dead kids.

Thanks to the netgalley and bookture for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Stolen Grace by B.R. Spangler is a gripping, character-driven thriller that masterfully balances a fast-paced "whodunit" with deep emotional stakes.

From the very first chapter, this dark novel pulls you into a chilling world of kidnapping and murder. It is an intriguing and emotionally intense story that hits deep in the heart, particularly as it deals with the horrific abduction and torture of children. The writing is exceptionally strong, featuring an interesting cast of characters led by the standout protagonist, Nichelle, and a plot that is consistently full of twists.

The audiobook experience is significantly elevated by Elise Roth’s outstanding narration. She brings a remarkable level of tension and emotional depth to the characters, making the gut-wrenching and unsettling scenes feel even more immediate. Dealing with crimes against children always adds a heavy layer of emotional intensity, and it’s a testament to the writing and Elise Roth's narration that it felt compelling rather than just gratuitous.

This is a compelling start to a series that promises plenty of grit and heart. A strong 4-star read for any passionate fan of police procedurals who doesn’t mind a story that strikes deep.

Stolen Grace introduces FBI Special Agent Nichelle Wilkinson, who has already proven her mettle on the job. Now, she takes on a gruesome case in Philadelphia. Readers who enjoyed the Casey White series by B. R. Spangler will find this book particularly captivating. In fact, you might remember meeting Nichelle in the previous series. Early on in this story, Nichelle seeks advice from her friend Casey, but she can’t shake the feeling that something is off.

The case at hand involves a missing child, and Nichelle is determined to find justice for the young victim, Jenni Cross. The case takes a chilling turn when a note is found at the scene, expressing gratitude for Nichelle’s grace. This case is particularly intense for Nichelle, as it reminds her of the tragic loss of her twin sister and parents in an accident when they were children.

This is an excellent start to a new series, and it begins with a bang. The story will resonate with any mother or grandmother, as I was. The suspense is palpable, the crimes are heinous, and the narrative will tug at your heartstrings. As the thrilling story draws to a close, the reader’s appetite is set for the next installment in the series.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

B.R. Spangler's Stolen Grace is a great start to a new series and a well-crafted thriller. The story follows Special Agent Nichelle Wilkinson, a fierce and determined rookie FBI agent, who returns to her hometown to confront a chilling abduction case and the haunting shadows of her past. The haunting details surrounding the cases are both heart-wrenching and compelling. I felt the character development was one of the highlights of this novel. Nichelle is not just a tough investigator; she is a complex protagonist grappling with her own history of loss and abandonment. The examination of her relationship with her father’s past adds emotional depth to her journey and creates a poignant backdrop for her motivations. And I cannot wait to see what happens with this part of the story. I felt the writing was fairly fast-paced and immersive, with good descriptions that brought scenes to life while maintaining an air of suspense. The twists were well-crafted, leading to a climax that I felt was satisfying.

B.R. Spangler has delivered a memorable debut that blends crime, mystery, and personal growth. I would recommend this book.

I received this book courtesy of Netgalley for the purpose of a fair and honest review.

Overview: Nichelle Wilkinson has returned home to Philadelphia after working in the Outer Banks. This is her lucky shot. Her first case is a serial killer with the most innocent of victims. Why is someone kidnapping and killing prepubescent children? Who is Jane Page? Does she have anything to do with the murders? Can Nichelle, Detective Chen, and Officer Denoto find the killer before too many die? Let's find out.

Dislikes: The subject matter of the murders is a dark storyline. I'm not naive. Yes, children are murdered, more frequently than I would prefer. But there was too much time spent with the gory details of the crimes.

We also run into a potential cheat when it comes to the killer's identity. There were too many surprises with the ending that we were given.

Likes: Detective Chen gives a lot of herself to her job. This could easily be a bad thing, as she is the type to burn out fast.

Denoto and Nichelle made a great team.

Conclusion: This is a serious thriller, though not to my usual tastes. If you like darker thrillers, then this book might be for you. Enjoy the read.

Thank you to NetGalley for the audiobook ARC of Stolen Grace. This was one of those listens that completely pulled me in, it was tense, emotional, and very hard to pause once it got going.

The story opens with a deeply unsettling case, a young girl taken from her home, with very little to go on and the clock already ticking. At the centre is Special Agent Nichelle Wilkinson, returning to her hometown and trying to establish herself, while also facing the weight of her own past. That personal connection gives the investigation an extra edge, it’s not just about solving the case, but about what it stirs up for her along the way.

Nichelle is a strong lead. She’s focused and capable, but there’s a clear emotional undercurrent that makes her feel grounded and believable. As the case develops, the links to her past—particularly around her father, add another layer of tension that keeps building as the story progresses.

The plot is tightly woven, gradually bringing different strands together into something much darker than it first appears. There’s a real sense of urgency throughout, especially with the focus on missing children, and it keeps the stakes high from start to finish.

The narration by Elise Roth really elevates the whole experience. She captures Nichelle’s voice perfectly being measured, determined, but with real depth when it matters. The pacing works well, and the character voices are clear without ever feeling overdone. It’s the kind of performance that draws you further into the story.

Overall, this was a fivestar listen for me. Gripping, well-paced, and emotionally engaging, with narration that genuinely enhances the story. A strong start to what feels like a series I’ll definitely want to continue.

Stolen Grace is the first book in a brand new FBI Thriller series.
It follows Agent Nichelle Wilkinson, a headstrong new FBI agent. A local child is abducted and this quickly evolves into an investigation to hunt a killer. It's fast paced and full of suspense!

Nichelle is a great FMC fighting her own demons but heck does it make her strong at her job. It makes her character great to connect with and I can't wait to see how her story unfolds too.

Why is this thriller different? Picture a modern take on some of the old school thriller movies such as The Bone Collector, Seven and Murder By Numbers. It has that nostalgic detective vibe, but brought into 2026. I loved following the case.

It's dark and twisty but the storylines are realistic. The writing gripping, with no plot- lulls and it actually draws you in.

Audiobook narrator: Elise Roth was outstanding! They brought a lot to the characters and the drama/tension without it effecting the connectivity to the story. Absolutely fantastic audiobook.
This is a top tier, expertly written thriller.

Thank you to Netgallery and BR Spangler for this ALC. This is my honest review.

𝗠𝗬 𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚:★★★★

𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞:
A child-killing predator stalks the quiet suburbs, and rookie FBI agent Nichelle Wilkinson is determined to stop him. Shaped by a traumatic childhood in foster care after losing her twin sister, mother and police officer father, Nichelle has fought hard to prove herself as a forensic specialist. As the investigation leads her into dangerous territory, Nichelle must confront both a ruthless killer and the ghosts she thought she’d buried.

𝗠𝗬 𝗢𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗡:
This was an exciting and gripping start to a series. I really liked the main character, a unique and compelling special agent who kept me invested throughout the story. The investigation into the child murders and kidnappings was intense and engaging, and the author did a great job portraying the dynamics between the investigators.

My only issue was with the audiobook narration. The narrator’s frequent, very loud breaths—every few sentences—were quite distracting for me. I ended up listening at a very low volume just to avoid them.

Despite this, the story itself was strong enough to keep me hooked.

Stolen Grace is the first installment in the Special Agent Nichelle Wilkinson series. It is full of suspense twists and turns. The intensity and pacing was pure perfection.

Stolen Grace is a great start to a new series by this author. I really like Nichelle, who has moved back to Philadelphia as a new FBI agent. Her first case involves missing children who are later found dead. She has an intriguing history that I hope is explored more in the future. The story begins well and grabbed my attention and interest right away and held it to the end. The authors writing style is good, it is very engaging and the story flows well. This quickly became a fast paced read with a good plot and constantly had me guessing who was responsible. The author expertly increases the tension and suspense throughout making the characters jump out of the story and into my mind. The ending sets the next book up perfectly and I'll definitely want to read it.

If you're a fan of FBI, police procedurals I would recommend Stolen Grace as well as the authors Casey White series.

This a very dark and disturbing police/FBI thriller. Be prepared for the nature of murders in this story. Children being taken and their heart ripped out while still alive is a tough read.
I found this fast paced, tense and easy to read.
Nichelle is a strong main character, her and the team have a good connection. Also loved Tabby the stray cat that Nichelle encounteres early in the story.
She's also wanting to find out what happened to her family many years ago after she moves back home and starts working with one of her father's old colleagues.
The ending sets it up nicely for book 2 and leaves you wanting more.
I've never read this authors work so I'm unaware if these characters are new or have featured in past books.
I highly recommend this book, if you love dark, gritty police stories, this is for you.

Totally gripping story from beginning to the surprising end...Nichelle Wilkenson has left her job at the Outer Banks police station to work as an agent for the FBI in Philadelphia where she grew up and where her parents and twin sister died fifteen years ago. Her first case is working with the local police on a very disturbing and sinister case, or cases. Several young children have been kidnapped over several weeks and the ones found have been brutally murdered. But, by who and why. That is what they need to find out before more children are taken. When the case is finally solved, it is more disturbing and frightening than anyone could imagine, and the reasoning behind the events is too eerie and scary to think about or believe.

A new police procedural series! How could I pass it up?! And saying fans of Lisa Regan would be interested, yes please! I’ve enjoyed books by B. R. In the past, so I knew I’d like this one, I definitely wasn’t disappointed.

You’d never guess that Nichelle was an FBI rookie agent. I like that she has a background in forensics. She sees scenes with a different type of critical eye. Partnering with her father’s old partner, a local Philadelphia detective, she is determined to find the serial killer who is cutting out children’s hearts.

I flew through the audio of this book. If I hadn’t had to work, I likely would have finished it all in one sitting. I enjoyed Elise’s narration and would love to hear more by her.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copies of this book.

The beginning of a new series from author B.R.Spangler, this time featuring detective Nichelle Wilkinson. A definite page turner although at times difficult to read with the nature of the killings and the age of those targeted. A whole bunch if characters to try and get to understand, maybe a few too many, I found myself unsure as to which direction this story would turn next.
If I’m to be honest, I miss Detective Casey White a little, but am not going to make any snap judgements on one book.
