The Starlight Age #2

Helia's Shadow Part Two

Rate this book
Helia’s Shadow Part Two picks up right where Part One ended, with Helia trapped in a transporter on the way to the lunar prison. When she gets there, she discovers that the rumors Gordon heard were true—there are alien cannibals on the moon. It’s more horrific and dangerous than anything she ever imagined. She must survive long enough to figure out how to escape back to earth, find Kalo and the rebels, and take down Reku before he enslaves the last surviving humans.

One human girl’s ingenious invention and one alien boy’s awakened heart are humanity’s last hope . . .

Most of K.C. Neal's days are filled with some combination of writing, reading, gardening, working, and watching stuff on Netflix with her maltipoo, Oscar. She has an irrational fixation with L.A., and during occasional trips there she pretends her life is more glamorous than it really is ("Entourage" is her guilty pleasure). She likes to surf and hang out on sandy beaches, especially where drinks are served adorned with tiny umbrellas.

This book is the best book I've read so far this year. It's the perfect sequel to Part One and it is going to leave me with such a book hangover it's not even funny. Helia is the kind of strong lead character that books need. She's a badass that even a prison cell on the moon couldn't contain.

Helia wakes up on what's supposed to be a one way trip to the moon. Where she meets a new friend that she names Shadow. Through trying to serve his purpose in life he helps Helia to form her escape route back to Earth. So she can fulfill her destiny of bringing down Reku and saving the citizens of Haven from becoming slaves.

When I started Part Two I was a little worried that I might have forgotten something from the first book. I read HSP1 (Helia's Shadow Part One) back in October and I have read a lot of books in between them, but thankfully that didn't happen. Once I started reading everything came back to me and I was once again transported into this alien infested world.

It starts off right where HSP1 left off with Helia on her way to the lunar prison. Even though at first it was Helia trying to bust out with Ellerine, it was not boring or slow. Things started happening pretty quickly, faster than if I was the one that woke up in prison. She almost immediately realizes where she is and jumps right into trying to form a plan of escape, there was no pity party stage which I liked. It amazes me that Helia is so strong and I'm not talking about being an alien hybrid. I'm talking about how incredibly brave she is. Before her full power potential even kicked in she was doing everything she could to help her friend survive. Her fight scenes were so good. Seriously some of the best fight scenes I've read in a long time.

I love her persistence. She knew what she wanted and she did't stop until she got it. Helia didn't let Zira push her around or anyone else for that matter. Helia knew exactly what leverage she had and she used it, flawlessly. She fulfilled what she set how to do just like she told Shadow she would.

I was once again glad the romance wasn't the focal point of the book. Kalo and Helia had their small moment of reunion but it wasn't all gushy. They didn't have time to be all gushy they had a job to do. Their missions came first and I loved that. Even though it's obvious that they care about each other it's not all they have going on.

This series was a roller coaster ride for my emotions; it made me happy, scared, sad, proud, terrified like a good book should. There were times I just sat there with my mouth wide open just staring at the book. K.C. Neal is an amazing author and has truly outdone herself with this whole series.

I am so addicted to these books; they always seem to leave me craving more. I loved the ending so much, it was the perfect balance of cute and informative. I hate when I finish a book with too many questions and thankfully a lot of my questions were answered before the ending.

I know there is a prequel coming out and I can't wait to get my hands on it.
