One mistake on the part of Dillan Miles, one missed detail, and half a million people would be terminated. Dillan Miles, Chief Scientist of OmniVirtual Corporation (OV), the world’s single supplier of Virtual Reality, has a serious problem on his hands. His creation, OVNet, a perfected Virtual Reality realm in which the clients can conceive no difference between Reality and Virtual Reality, has swept the world in a frenzy. OV has monopolized the industry and sent obsolete giants like Microsoft to early graves. The tidal swell of wealth into the corporation has most of the corporate executives champing at the bit for more. For Dillan, however, there is a double-edged moral dilemma. First, his wife was killed by the same software that has taken the human race to new heights. Secondly, OVNet clients are addicted to Cyberspace. OV argues Cyberspace is the ultimate realm for individual humanistic expression. Clients can be anyone they desire, do anything they can imagine. Mankind has reached a new era and OmniVirtual is there with a marketing plan to support those needs. Dillan disagrees and argues that if allowed to create the next version of his product, R7, Cyberspace will be both enhanced and safer, the client’s addiction will fade and people can make independent decisions about their future. More than that, Dillan suspects that inside OVNet, the digital beings created to support Dillan, and OVNet clients, are alive. Streaming information, and an operating system of Dillan’s own creation, have enabled Dillan’s creations to take on a life of their own. Zip, Quinton, and Trace live inside the realm of Cyberspace, and just as much Dillan’s friends as anyone in the real world. Together, the foursome are known throughout Cyberspace for their heroism. Afraid Dillan will compromise their cash flow, OmniVirtual takes steps to cut Dillan from the picture, not realizing Dillan’s friends inside of Cyberspace will rally to the aid of their friend. When they do, a dark and nasty secret is exposed—an ugly presence walks the halls of OmniVirtual and the secret hidden inside the Quantum Illusion could mean the end of human civilization.
