Where Did All the Fat Go?: The WOW! Prescription to Reach Your Ideal Weight--and Stay There! : Lose Fat - Gain Muscle!

Rate this book
The controversial medical approach that shatters all previous weight loss theories. Based on new scientific research gaterhed by the doctor of the hit NBC television show, The Biggest Loser, The Two-A-Day Fat Loss Prescription shows how to reach your Wow dream weight - safely and effectively - and stay there, once and for all. While other weight reduction plans result in loss of muscle (which is why the weight almsot always comes back), this plan reduces 90+% of fat alone. Dr. Huizenga's exercise/diet program resulted in incredible weight loss on the show's first two seasons, but Season 3 validated his method, 36 home contestants -- without benefit of the show's live-in boot camp with exercise trainers, cameras, and monetary incentive, lost weight comparable to people on the show. Dr. Huizenga's complete step-by-step approach deals with the physical side of fat loss, and the psychological aspect as well - depression, temporary failure and other emotional problems that have hindered dieters' results since time immemorial. This start to finish program * Comprehensive, week-by-week exercise guide with photos * Easy-to-follow charts and graphs * Helpful food/menu plan with recipes * Long-term motivation for lifestyle change

This book intrigued me. It's written by the doctor who consults with The Biggest Loser and is the closest thing I've seen yet to a safe way to replicate the rapid weight loss through exercise and diet that is achieved on the show. Even the books that are branded The Biggest Loser don't go this far. The program consists of one hour of intense exercise twice a day and moderate calorie restriction. To follow it completely requires setting up and following a rigourous schedule of bed time, wake time, exercise time, and meal time. But the promise is 1 to 2 percent (note that's percent, not pounds) of weight loss each week and that the loss is all fat; muscle and bone mass are actually increasing on this program.

The program was tested on the at home participants of The Biggest Loser during Season 3 when there was a participant from each of the 50 states, but only 14 were at the ranch. The program does not require a gym or special food. An "anabolic shake" is required after workouts, but it's made at home in a blender from ingredients you buy at the grocery store. This seems to me to be an excellent alternative to weight loss surgery and a good solution for people who are feeling a certain desperation to lose weight and to get it done quickly.

My only problem is that Dr. Huizenga doesn't seem to recognize how important the support that he gave the at home participants and that they gave to each other was to their success. I can't imagine how anyone could do a program this difficult without having fellow participants to commiserate with and to share problems and strategies. Unfortunately, I haven't found any support groups for people doing this program.

I've now lost 40 pounds, albeit much slower than this program would have been, and I haven't worked nearly as hard as this program requires. So, I'll keep plodding along. The book has encouraged me to exercise more and to at least think about splitting my exercise into two sessions.

I had the privilege of working with two of the contestants from The Biggest Loser Season 3, and at their health club they utilize this book for some of their clients to help them with their weight loss journeys. I finally got a chance to read it - and it was overall a great book! I finally understood more of what they teach and why they teach it, and loved reading about the research Dr. H did while Biggest Loser was still in its early stages. It did get a little jargon-y here and there, but it was still overall clear.

That being said, I'd be interested to see if this data still holds true now that there have been many more seasons. I haven't seen any followups published that can confirm what Dr. H was finding.

One day I had the privilege of meeting Sione Fa from The Biggest Loser. I asked him what he had learned & what he would recommend. He told me about this book. I read it and liked the concept of exercising every day with recreational activities added on several more days plus weight training. I definitely disagree with using ankle weights for added resistance. I read this book several years ago and skimmed it again last week.
