I absolutely loved this. I’m not a regular reader of crime because I often find the actual writing is disappointing, but not in this case. The characters are believable and the setting and scenes from the North East of the UK are so atmospheric. It’s a pacy story, but not to the detriment of the unfolding of the plot or characters. It reminded me of others I have loved, like The Dry (Jane Harper) and We Begin at the End (Chris Whitaker). I’m sure there will be a series and I’ll be buying the next one as soon as I can.
This is the breath of fresh air that crime thrillers needed. The prologue read like a noir thriller and got me instantly hooked. By the time I reached the ending, the setting of the next instalments had been carefully crafted and left me tingling with anticipation for what’s coming. The book flows with the ease of watching a movie, probably due to Hofman’s experience as a playwright & director, sprinkled with valuable inside knowledge of the justice system. Highly recommend, I can see this becoming the new word-of-mouth phenomenon of the North East!
Loved everything about Rooke and can’t wait to read about the further exploits for DCI Rooke. T.G. Hofman has created rounded characters and a narrative that engages the reader.
