Kawae's humor is so great, man.
Kawae's monster design is still on point! And it's still kind of hilariously brutal that we keep flashing back to Gakuro's dad leaving his severed hand on his son's head....
Volume 4 was a fanservice volume. Volume 5 is an action volume. And, oh boy, is it! Gakuro's transformation is still HYPE as fuck.
This volume concludes the Exorcist Bureau Arc, including completion of Gakuro's first official mission as a Captain. Notably, Gakuro powers up to the second level, achieving completion of his Soul Gear, as well as unlocking use of Nue's Zenoblade technique, which more strongly justifies his appointment as Captain, even if he's still technically a figurehead who only exists to keep Nue in line. And we see Igari in action as a true Captain, who is able to do more damage to the Level 4 enemy Yagyo, so Gakuro still has room to grow.
Interestingly, despite the arc ending with Yagyo establishing himself as Gakuro's nemesis... I don't think he's shown back up yet. I mean, I'm a bit behind on the serialization, but I don't have reason to believe he would have returned in the meantime. The power-scaling as slid to such a point that we're fighting other Hyo now, so it wouldn't make much sense for Yagyo to return. This is an unfortunate problem with the writing of the manga: the manga often ranked rather low in the magazine, making Kawae have to change gears with some frequency, but the editors-in-chief (especially Saito) kept greenlighting actual dogshit, which would get cancelled around twenty chapters, acting as cushions to keep Nue alive. This manga has functionally become the line separating successful manga from future failures in Jump; if you can outsell Nue, you'll last for years, but if you can't, you're gonna get the axe.
