Still loving this series but it's been a little while since I read the last volume and I think I might have forgotten what happened in the last one. I also found needing to decipher the other language in this a little bit of a pain. Alas, I still like the series, just preferred the previous volumes.

I continue to adore this series and can’t wait to see where it’ll continue to go! This one felt a little off for me in a few places - probably exacerbated by the sheer amount of translating (fun! but also took me out of the story significantly, and frequently) as well as all the time where Bea and Cad were apart. This definitely felt more like a “middle of the story” volume than previous ones, but I’m still so invested in this arc as a whole and continue to believe it’s just the allegory we need in what is a really dark time in our world.

Tim Probert’s Lightfall: A Place Between pulls you right back into its magical world with warmth, wonder, and just the right touch of mystery.

In this fourth installment, Bea and Cad continue their journey to restore light to their darkened world, but after a shipwreck, Cad finds himself separated and drawn into a strange realm between life and death.

It was such a joy to return to these characters. Watching Bea and Cad take separate paths gives each of them more space to shine, which adds a refreshing depth to the story. The new side characters, especially the spirits, were a highlight for me. They feel mysterious and beautifully imagined, and I truly hope we get to see more of them in future installments.

One of the things I continue to love about this series is its sense of journey. It takes its time to explore each location, allowing the world to feel expansive and alive. Beneath the adventure, the story also touches on thoughtful themes like hope and what it means to face mortality, which adds a layer of emotional resonance without ever losing its sense of wonder.

The illustrations are absolutely stunning. The detailed landscapes and especially the sweeping two-page spreads are a joy to take in and really elevate the storytelling.

Overall, I had a great time with this book and am already looking forward to what comes next.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher HarperCollins Children’s Books and HarperAlley for providing me with an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was another excellent installment in what has become my favorite graphic novel series. I love the art style, I love the characters, I love the plot, and I love the magical and wholesome nature of the story. I highly recommend this series and can’t wait to continue it.

I received a review copy from the publisher via Edelweiss.

What a page turner!! The art is spectacular as always! Wow. What a cool universe. I was reminded that I love how Bea’s anxiety is illustrated. I wish I could read the next one now *sigh*

To be transparent I have been looking up when the next installment of Lightfall will be for a long time. So when I saw it on NetGalley I audibly gasped.

I love the way Tim Probert writes these graphic novels and this one was no exception. I really enjoyed the alphabet key in the beginning of the book so when that language came up later it was fun deciphering what those characters were saying. I just overall loved continuing the lore, and I love how Tim doesn’t shy away from darker themes in a children’s graphic novel. This series is just exceptional.

Another truly delightful outing in the Lightfall universe. Though I was bummed Cad and Bea were separated for much of the novel, each of their adventures was so vital to the other one! Once again, the most beautiful illustrations and the way that sadness/loneliness/fear is depicted in these drawings- I’ll never be over it. Cannot recommend these graphic novels highly enough!

I need a re-read of this series before more volumes come out so I can actually remember what's going on properly, BUT I still really enjoyed this volume. It felt much shorter than the previous volumes though? I would have liked to have had more happen...

Still beautiful art, adorable characters, a wonderful magical world slowly unfurling.

Read for the Sunrise on the Readathon July 2026.

This is one of my favourite series, I don't read many graphic novels but this one just speaks to me. The story is gripping, the characters really loveable and the artwork is absolutely stunning.
This was one of my few pre-orders for 2026 as I've cut back because I wasn't reading them soon enough to be worthy of the pre-order.
It'll probably be a 2 year wait for the next in the series but the wait is always worth it.

This is installment 4 in a middle grade graphic novel series. The adventure continues, it's actually a really well written series covering (at an age appropriate level) some more complex topics like anxiety and death. The art is beautiful, I've been reading this series for a few years now, each installment is really special and hopefully this world continues on!

Ahhh! I can’t get over the illustrations of this novel!! I take my time on each page just admiring his work! This novel was more of a bridge for me, where it was setting the layout for the next one but I still loved it! One of my favorite graphic novel series! Can’t wait for the fifth one

Visually beautiful and heartwarming, as the Lightfall series always is, but I don’t think enough happened in this book. Since we ended on such a cliffhanger in the last book, I think this book needed to be a little more action-packed— instead, there was a lot of in-between and trying to figure out next steps. (Fitting of the title, at least).

After reading I had so much fun discussing with my 15 yo and 12 yo who both love this series. We all agreed that there were parts of this book that we didn't prefer, but that it absolutely made sense for the character development. The title "A Place Between" was also a clue that this was going to be a transitional book, and while that maybe wasn't the most fun to read in the moment, we all think that it has set up the next book to do great things.

The only real complaint we had was that there is so much translating to do! In the front of the book is an alphabet for a language that is spoken by a number of characters in the story. It was so cool to translate some of first speech bubbles, but when it turned into dozens of places throughout the story, it began to feel laborious. None of us translated all of them and it felt like it was utilized too long.

This remains one of the best graphic novels we've ever read. Artistically it is incredible and lush, but the writing and storytelling is equally compelling. Plus the way it works through real life in a fantasy world is chef's kiss. Can't recommend these enough!
