Synopsis:
By moonlight, young peasant woman Idony searches for treasure to save her family from starvation and homelessness.
In early medieval England, with the nation embroiled in The Anarchy, and her peasant family on the brink of homelessness, Idony excavates every local site fabled to contain silver. The King has offered land in exchange for a large amount of silver to fund his war. Idony has sworn to avoid ever trusting God again since He took her beloved older sister to join a convent. Owning land could keep Idony from ever needing to trust God with her future again.
Everard, a young man who suffers from odd fainting spells, and Amelina, the quirky little sister Idony never asked for, insist on helping her in her dangerous search each night.
Somewhere between the interior of a creepy burial mound, lowering Everard down the village well, excavating eerie church ruins, and digging up an ancient fortress, Idony begins praying for safety. Soon, she's putting more and more of her hope in the God who took her sister. Additionally, Everard’s gentle nature and handsome face begin to consume more of her thoughts than treasure. Then Everard reveals that he is near starving to death, and he will soon be homeless himself. Idony might just have to trust the God who seems to have abandoned her if she wants to save herself and those she cares about.
My Thoughts:
I first heard of “Lest I Break” through the writing group I was in. I know the author and was anticipating this novel as soon as I was told Anna was publishing it herself. I agreed to be an ARC reader for the upcoming release and immediately became absorbed into Idony’s world.
Idony is a very relatable character and at points reminded me of the determination and vigor that I see in characters like Katniss Everdeen. In fact, some of the themes were similar. I think it’s a good reminder of just what hunger and starvation can reduce a person to and how easily something as simple as food that we take for granted today, can impact a storyline.
Hunger was at the very root of Idony’s story and her world. Everyone she knows is starving and death becomes more common than life. There were times I wanted to shake her older brother Oswin for her carelessness and I’ll be frank, stupidity for taking whatever Idony said with a grain of salt. Sadly, not much as changed with women’s voices. Most of the time we’re ignored and fall on deaf ears of men.
The relationship between Idony and Amelina was just so pure and I love them so much. It reminded me of how much I adore my sister and what lengths I would go to, to see that she would be taken care of.
The love story woven into this tale fraught with desperation was so uplifting. Idony feels invisible to everyone and even God. The only one who seems to see Idony is her little sister Amelina, that is until Idony, Amelina, and their neighbor Everard join forces on their nightly treasure hunts. There are quite a few page gripping moments regarding Idony and Everard that leave you hooked until the last page.
I really am so glad that Anna published this herself, because this is such a beautiful, captivating story, that despite the almost thousand year difference, proves not much has changed in our society and that sometimes having faith in something we can’t always see or hear is harder than any other choice we have to make.
This book was a pleasure from start to finish and very easily a 5 ***** story!
