Sugar Shack Witch Mysteries #5

Batter and Broomsticks

Rate this book
Nothing says "small-town journalism" like stumbling over a corpse.

The magic from the amplification stones is gone, and we have no idea where to find it, but by a stroke of luck, we meet a fairy who might.

Unfortunately, she's got a problem of her own. The deal is simple we shut down the thief who's been stealing botanicals from the fairy's sacred grove, and she'll tell us what she knows.

Simple enough. Orion has his shiny Arcane Order badge, after all. Stopping a small-time plant thief should be all in a day's work, with maybe enough time to spare for a late lunch at Whimzee's.

But when we go to issue the official warning and retrieve the stolen goods, we walk into a crime scene. Now we're stuck solving a murder to honor our end of the bargain. But the deeper we dig, the more suspects we find.

The clock is ticking, the fairies are growing impatient, and we're running out of time to get answers.

To catch a pair of thieves, first we'll have to catch a killer.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the ALC.

4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was such a fun little cosy mystery! I was hooked into the story, really liked both the lead and side characters, and absolutely loved the magical element of Rosella being able to talk to animals. Honestly, give me a cosy mystery with a little bit of magic and I’m probably sold. 😂🐾

My only real regret is that I started this one so late in the series. I think I would have connected with the characters a lot more if I’d read the previous books first, as I definitely felt like I was missing some of the backstory and those early “getting to know you” moments that come with starting a series from the beginning.

The audiobook was also fantastic. The narration fit the cosy tone of the story really well, and the characters all had distinct enough voices that I could easily follow who was speaking without having to think about it.

Overall, I had a really good time with this one! It was charming, magical and just the right amount of cosy, and I’ll definitely be going back to book one to listen to the rest of the series. ✨

Thank you the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for an ARC. All opinions are my own.

A cozy mystery combined with the witchy and magical elements is such a great premise. The amplification stone magic is missing. A fairy turn ups to offer them the information to find the missing stone in the exchange of some errands. But the task is not easy as it seems.

I started this book without knowing that this book is the 6th installment in the series. After I knew it, I was quite concerned about that. So, I felt that I need to learn more about the world-building to enjoy more. Also, I think I might need more about the relationships among the characters. However, I still enjoyed the mystery and the magic parts. This book delivered these three elements quite well, magic, mystery, and coziness. Also, I think the magical creatures were the best parts.
Anyway, if I have a chance, I will read the whole series start from the beginning because I really love their vibes.

Ok, so I requested this on a whim on NetGalley, I have not listed or read any of the previous books in the series. But I was looking for something fall and fun to get me into the Halloween vibe.
I very much enjoyed this audio book, and have already put the first few books on hold on my Libby app.
Batter and Broomsticks was a quick and easy listen, I didn't feel too lost having just jumped in on the 9th book, but I am excited to go back and learn more about this world and all that has happened up until this point. They will be my go to books in between heavier reads.
I enjoyed Kelsey Navarro Foster as narrator for this book.

I have loved watching Rosella's journey from the time she came home temporarily to finding her calling right in her hometown. It's been so rewarding to follow her growth, and this fifth installment of the Sugar Shack Witch Mysteries shows how far she has come. Her relationship with Orion developed quickly, but it's still going strong, and Danielle Garrett writes it with so much warmth and honesty. They feel like a real couple, with real questions about the future, including what happens when work might pull them in different directions.

In this book, the magic from the amplification stones is still missing, and Ella and Orion have no idea where to look. Then a fairy turns up who might have a lead, but she has a problem of her own: someone has been stealing botanicals from her sacred grove. The deal is simple. Stop the thief, and she'll share what she knows. With Orion's Arcane Order badge, it should be a quick errand, maybe with time left over for lunch at Whimzee's. Instead, they walk into a crime scene, and now they have to solve a murder to hold up their end of the bargain. The deeper they dig, the more suspects turn up, and the impatient fairies make the ticking clock feel very real.

What I enjoyed most is how well the book balances its parts. The mystery is the main event, but the stones storyline runs underneath it and makes real progress here, which kept me hooked and eager for what comes next. The magical creatures are a highlight, and Rosella's ability to talk to animals adds charm and humor to the sleuthing. The banter and family moments keep the story cozy, and the ending doesn't feel rushed once the killer is caught.

Kelsey Navarro Foster's narration is splendid. The characters have distinct voices that are easy to follow, the animals are adorable, and the performance suits the cozy tone perfectly. I couldn't stop listening, and I can't get enough of this world.

This is a series with an ongoing arc and a lot of shared history between Rosella and Orion, so I highly recommend reading it in order to get the full pleasure of the storyline. Start at the beginning and enjoy watching everything build.

Would I recommend it?
Batter and Broomsticks, book five of the Sugar Shack Witch Mysteries, is a full 5 star listen for me. Would I recommend it? ABSOLUTELY... but go back to book one first, because Rosella and Orion's story keeps building and you'll want all of that history behind you. The murder mystery is a good one, the missing stones storyline finally moves, and Kelsey Navarro Foster's narration made me not want to hit pause. Five books in and I'm still greedy for more.

This was a cute cozy mystery that kept me interested in the story, I liked the lead and side characters and loved the element of magic where Rosella could speak with the animals. I think that I may have enjoyed this slightly more if I had read the previous books first as I do feel that I missed a chunk of back story and getting to know you elements by dropping in so late in the series.

The story had enough shady characters throughout so that I wasn't entirely sure who the real suspect was until the very end so I appreciated that aspect.

This was single narration by Kelsey Navarro Foster and she did great with all the characters the voices were clear and it made it easy to do some house chores and still follow along.

If you're looking for a low stakes, cozy mystery this might be the vibes your looking for. I do plan to check out more in this series.

Rosella and Orion are back in Batter and Broomsticks, the fifth full-length title in Garrett’s cozy Sugar Shack Witch Mysteries. Each book features a standalone mystery; however, the individual cases are all part of a larger, ongoing plotline, so I strongly recommend reading the books in order.

Ella and Orion continue to investigate the mysterious amplification stones, trying to figure out what they do and where their magic went. When a trapped fairy suggests knowing more about the stones, Ella makes a deal for the information. This leads Ella and Orion towards a sketchy poaching ring and a murder.

Like the other stories in the series, Batter and Broomsticks is an entertaining paranormal cozy with a good balance between the mystery and personal relationships. I love that Ella and Orion’s romance is no longer in question, both comfortable in their relationship. They also have settled into working together, with each knowing their own capabilities and able to rely on one another.

Garrett does a good job building the scene and providing lots of details for this quaint setting, bringing the world to life. The story is solid and I love that the overall series arc is progressing. Sometimes I get annoyed with the lack of procedural details that a seasoned investigator wouldn’t mess up, but it doesn’t undo my enjoyment of the creative tale.

Narration: After eight total stories in this world, Batter and Broomsticks is narrated by a new performer, Kelsey Navarro Foster. I’m never a fan of changing long-standing series narrators; however sometimes circumstances require it. I tried hard not to draw comparisons between Amanda Ronconi (the original narrator) and Foster. While their styles and voices are a degree or two different, I actually enjoyed Foster who brings a more mature, secure voice to Ella.

The story is shared via first person POV of Rosella. Foster performs with a strong feminine voice, altering dialogue based on gender, age, and creature-type. Each character is identifiable and fairly unique. She adds a lot of emotion through changes in volume and speed.

Overall, I really enjoy Garrett’s cozies and found Batter and Broomsticks a strong entry. I look forward to returning to Winterspell, joining Ella on her adventures.

My Ratings:

Narration: B+

Hunting for Pixies

Rosella and Orion are getting no where with the stones. Until a pixie promises information if they help. Turns out, someone has been stealing protected herbs from the forest and kidnapping pixies. When they track him down, he's dead.

Now they have to find where the pixies have gone. And help catch the killer. But the closer they get to finding answers, the more murky things seem.

And there are big life changes on the horizon that Rosella isnt sure she's ready for yet.

Another fun sugar shack mystery!

An easy read (or listen) cozy romance paranormal
Mystery for when you don't really want to think. Like if the show Friends were magical investigators with a bakery backdrop. Wish fulfillment world where the hardest part for me as a listener was a world where journalism was meant to garner this much acclaim. Great audiobook narrator, but some of the plot pacing had me up the speed to get to the point.

Thanks to #NetGalley for the chance to listen.

I am absolutely obsessed with this witchy cozy mystery series! I need the next book right this very minute. Rosella is such an awesome character. She is flawed and fun. I love her grandma so much! I love the banter with Rosella and her sisters. It reminds me of my relationship with my sister. The mystery was interesting, and I am loving the story that is part of each book. I was so excited to continue this adventure, but within the first few minutes of the audiobook, I realized the narrator had changed from the previous books. I originally fell in love with the Sugar Shack Mysteries in large part because Amanda Ronconi brought the characters and the world so vividly to life. Kelsey Navarro Foster is clearly a talented narrator, but I found the change distracting. Without Ronconi’s familiar interpretation of the characters, the story did not feel quite as engaging for me.

I also did not find this mystery as compelling as those in the earlier books. The central plot did not pull me in as strongly, and some elements felt repetitive, particularly the ongoing mystery surrounding the stones. I am still curious to see where that storyline ultimately leads, but I hope the next installment provides more answers.

Rosella and Orion’s relationship conflict around the 40% mark felt somewhat forced and out of character. When that conversation occurred, I was genuinely perplexed and found myself questioning the investment I had made in their romantic arc up to that point. The tension did not feel organic to the relationship as it had been developed in prior books.

I am still interested enough in the characters and the series as a whole to read the next book. However, I may choose the ebook rather than the audiobook going forward, primarily because I miss Amanda Ronconi’s narration.

Thanks NetGalley for the Advanced Listener Copy of this story!

Came for the whodunit, stayed for Ella and Orion's relationship talks

I'm not allowed to talk when I watch mysteries with friends. My mom lets me, because she's trying to figure it out too, but once I know who did it, I zip it for her. With Batter and Broomsticks, I'd have been zipping it pretty early. I clocked the killer the moment they walked onstage. I've done this before with both of Garrett's Winterspell series, so I'll accept some of the blame for reading and watching way too many mysteries.

Book 5 of the Sugar Shack Witch Mysteries picks up with Ella and Orion still hunting the magic drained from the amplification stones. A fairy with a lead has a price: shut down the thief raiding her sacred grove. With Orion's shiny Arcane Order badge, it should be a quick errand. Then they walk into a crime scene, and the suspect list just keeps growing.

This is a paranormal cozy with an amateur sleuth, fae and talking animals, and an established couple at the center. The murder is the main event, and the stones arc runs underneath it. That arc is what kept me guessing. It finally makes real progress here, and I still don't know where it's headed. I also appreciated that Garrett didn't rush the ending. A lot of cozies wrap everything up in a chapter once the killer's caught, but here there's real work left to do, and it pays off. The confrontation was a blast, thanks to a rarely seen character who steals every scene she's in.

The best part for me, though, is Ella and Orion. They keep circling back to the same conversation about what happens if he travels for work and she stays. He wants her along. She wants to travel but is scared of putting herself out in the mundane world again. She'd love for him to stay but knows he'd be miserable. That's realistic relationship stuff, and I'll take it over sugary insta-love any day.

The performance: This is where my rating dropped. Kelsey Navarro Foster takes over from Amanda Ronconi, who's voiced 20+ of Garrett's books for me. Any change would've been an adjustment, but this one fought the book. Her diction is very neutral, with a subtle regional pattern that stretches the ends of sentences and puts odd emphasis on lines. Most of her character voices are distinct, and the animals Ella hears are adorable, each one suiting its species and temperament. But Ella herself sounds flat. That's a real problem for a first-person cozy where the heroine's snark carries the humor. I listen at 1.0x almost always, so I heard every beat of it. I also found my attention drifting more than usual. I'd normally finish six hours in a day, and this one took me two.

Readers who like Beth Dolgner's Nightmare, Arizona series, Angie Fox's Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries, or Garrett's own Beechwood Harbor books will feel right at home. Her Beechwood Harbor Ghost Mysteries are what got me into paranormal cozies in the first place. Until then, I was sure they weren't for me. Don't start here, though. The stones arc and Ella and Orion's history carry over, so begin with Sprinkles and Sea Serpents.

Content notes: An off-page murder and its aftermath, mild language, and a sweet established romance with no spice.

Bottom line: A solid installment with a satisfying arc payoff and honest relationship stakes. If you've been listening to Ronconi, you might want to sample the new narrator before you commit, or switch to print.

Thank you to NetGalley and Tantor Media for the advance listener copy. All opinions are my own.

As a longtime fan of cozy paranormal mysteries, and of Danielle Garrett, I was so excited to get the audio ARC for this book.

I’ve loved every book within this series (and multiple others by her, if I’m being honest), and Batter and Broomsticks contains all the elements I’ve loved from the previous installments. None of the stakes ever feel too high, which may be a weird thing to say considering there’s a murder 😂, but there’s always just enough happening to keep me invested. I love the small-town feel, seeing all the familiar characters again, and following Rosella and Orion through another investigation.

One of my favorite things about this series is the different magical creatures and species that continue to pop up, and this time, pixies take center stage. Rosella and Orion are still investigating the stones from previous books that have mysteriously lost their magic when one of Rosella’s animal friends alerts her to a pixie trapped and in need of rescue.

When the two arrive to help, they discover that some of the answers they need may come with strings attached. They’re given one week to get to the bottom of the missing pixies in exchange for potentially vital information about their own investigation. Only, as they uncover more, they also discover a body.

I genuinely love these stories and the way they mix everyday life with solving mysteries. There’s something incredibly comforting about returning to this town and its characters, even when someone inevitably ends up dead. 😂 The mysteries remain interesting without ever taking away from the cozy atmosphere that makes the series so enjoyable for me.

The audiobook was also really well done. The narration fits the tone of the story perfectly, and each character’s voice is distinct enough that I never had trouble telling them apart.

Overall, this was another really enjoyable installment in a series that has become such a reliable cozy read for me. Familiar characters, magical creatures, a murder to solve, and just enough danger to keep things interesting without ever losing that comforting feeling I come to these books for.

Thank you to RBmedia and NetGalley for providing me with an advance listening copy in exchange for my honest review.

Danielle Garrett is one of my “if she writes it, I will read it” authors, and the Sugar Shack Witch Mysteries have become one of my favorite series alongside Beechwood Harbor, Magic Inn, and Nine Lives. At this point, I’m completely invested in these characters, with Rosella and Grandma Rose easily among my favorites.

Listening to “Batter and Broomsticks” was a new experience for me. After hearing Amanda Ronconi narrate 30+ books in Garrett’s magical universe, this was my first time experiencing one with Kelsey Navarro Foster behind the mic. I’m already a big fan of Kelsey’s, and while it definitely took a little adjusting to hear familiar characters with new voices, I thought she did a great job stepping into an established series. Her narration is charming and engaging, and I’m looking forward to hearing more from her.

One thing that makes the Sugar Shack mysteries unique is the overarching storyline involving Orion and the Order that has been building since the beginning. Rosella may be dealing with a more immediate, local mystery in each book, but somehow those events keep weaving back into the bigger picture. Because of that, I think this would be a difficult series to jump into out of order.

And I always love when the pixies get involved! This time, people are buying tracking pixies, botanicals are being stolen, and it all eventually connects back to the amplification stones and the larger mystery Rosella has been trying to unravel.

Personally, I think Sugar Shack is best binged. Give me the books one after another and let me disappear into this world for a while. Waiting between installments is harder because my brain does NOT hold onto all those little details forever, especially with such a layered overarching mystery.

Definitely start this series from the beginning and work your way through. There’s so much happening beneath each individual mystery that it’s worth having the entire story fresh in your mind!

I enjoyed this fun cozy mystery, that has a little bit of everything, mystery, romance, a rescue, a murder, talking animals, baking and best of all great characters. As you can tell there is a lot going on and it stays entertaining throughout and explains why this author has so many magic series under her belt or should I say wings. She certainly knows how to weave the magic to keep her readers wanting move.
I liked the characters. Orion and Rosella work well together and the chemistry and banter between them is sweet, making it a delight following them as they investigate. There are some quirky characters to add to the fun and humour in the book.
As for the investigation, while they might not solve the main reason why they are working together, to find the out why the signing stones has lost its magic, they do solve the case that they did themselves working on. I must admit I had no clue who the killer was and was surprised with who it turned out to be. Good job Rosella was the one investigating and I can't wait to join her on her next investigation.

A late night visit has Rosella rushing off to help rescue a fairy caught in a trap. She isn't the first one and the fairies want it to stop and the theft of there plants, in exchange they will tell what they know about the signing stones losing there magic. Catching the thief is the easy part but it's a woman and not the man catching the faiths and pixies. The thief gives them a lead but it only gets more complicated because they find him dead. Can they uncover a killer and find out what happened to the missing?
There boss wants results of they will be reassigned and time is ticking for them all.

I liked the narrator. She was a good choice and I think she cast her own magic to make sure she had a captive audience in her listeners.
I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

If you're looking for a cozy paranormal mystery check out 𝕭𝖆𝖙𝖙𝖊𝖗 𝖆𝖓𝖉 𝕭𝖗𝖔𝖔𝖒𝖘𝖙𝖎𝖈𝖐𝖘 by Danielle Garrett!

This story is apart of the ꜱᴜɢᴀʀ ꜱʜᴀᴄᴋ ᴡɪᴛᴄʜ ᴍʏꜱᴛᴇʀɪᴇꜱ series with 11 books. The story follows a witchy and her investigator partner trying to find missing botanicals stolen from the fairies and missing magic. When investigating they discover they'd not the only thing that has gone missing. There are missing fairies which lead them to a murder. The story follows their investigation but it's not without its twists. It's a case of "who done it", power dynamics and magic. Can they find out what happened before it's too late? Discover the whimsical world to see for yourself.

I got today's cute mystery from NetGalley and the RB Media team. The story was exactly what is supposed to be. It was cozy, it was magical and it definitely had it's time with the mystery. I loved that the answer wasn't in your face from the beginning and there were trials of "is it this person". The story went at a good pace and didn't feel like it was dragging on. The narrators did a great job bringing the distinct characters to life. It's a perfect time to sneak this mystery into your TBR for the spooky season.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I was slightly concerned about reading this without first having read the rest of the series. While I obviously missed out on some world building, character development and relationship building, I felt like the book did a great job of catching me up and making sure I knew everything I needed to.

I liked the characters, the different types of magic and the magical creatures a lot. The book drops you right into all of the above and the pacing is great from the start.

The mystery was layered and while I found parts of it predictable, the ultimate resolve worked and wasn't obvious from the start.

I do wish we got more into the romantic relationship. While it is established in this book, there's still things that need to be talked about and it was frustrating that they were hinted at but never actually explored.

I'm now keen to jump into the full story to see what I've missed as it was a quick and fun read.

✨ The queen of paranormal cozy has done it again! ✨

Welcome back to the magical PNW town of Winterspell, where the coffee is cozy, the magic is mischievous, and somehow Rosella and Orion always seem to find themselves standing over a dead body. 😂

Batter & Broomsticks delivers everything I’ve come to love about this series, an entertaining mystery, plenty of magical mayhem, lovable characters, a dash of romance, and enough fairies and pixies to make things wonderfully chaotic. I especially loved watching Rosella and Orion work together as they untangle a murder.

Danielle Garrett has such a knack for creating paranormal cozy mysteries that feel like coming home to a favorite little town. Winterspell is every bit as charming as ever, and I’m always happy to spend a little more time with this cast of witches, monsters, magical creatures, and wonderfully quirky characters. 🧙‍♀️✨

I received an ARC from NetGalley.

I want to begin by saying that I listened to the first 5 books for free in audible, then each book became a credit. These books are remarkably short, so I didn’t justify spending credits to listen to book 6-8, but when I saw 9 was coming out I figured it was now or never to hear it for free! So I gave it a listen….

I had no clue who the characters were or what the presumably series-wide issue in the background was exactly about, so I can tell I missed a lot on those last books. However, it didn’t actually mess up the story, which stood alone fairly well for me.

This is a contemporary magic book, so it has a fun blend of magic in today’s world, in a secret town of magic. I found the mystery to be intriguing, and the resolution was satisfying. Where the stakes could have risen I was pleased to see that the series stays true to its low stakes vibes. This is cozy mystery series, and very cute. This would make a great beach weekend read!

This was such a cute and cozy mystery! I’m a huge fan of Danielle Garrett and honestly love everything I’ve read from her, so I knew I was probably going to enjoy this one. I loved the characters, the cozy setting, and especially the magical element of Rosella being able to talk to animals. It added such a fun touch to the mystery!

There were plenty of suspicious characters to keep me guessing, and I really enjoyed trying to figure out who was actually behind everything. It kept me interested all the way through and was such an easy, entertaining listen.

The narration was really well done, although I have to admit I missed Amanda Ronconi! I’ve listened to so many of Danielle Garrett’s books narrated by her that her voice has become part of the experience for me. That said, Kelsey Navarro Foster still did a great job bringing the characters to life.

Another fun, magical, cozy read from Danielle Garrett! Definitely makes me want to go back and read the earlier books in the series.

This was a very cozy, small‑town mystery with a fun magical twist. Even though I haven’t read the previous books in the series, I still enjoyed the adventure — the fairy grove, the missing botanicals, the crime scene surprise, and the growing list of suspects all made for an engaging read.

The premise itself is adorable: journalism, fairies, a magical investigation, and a murder that derails what should’ve been a simple errand.

My only struggle was the internal monologue. It tended to tell me what was happening rather than paint the scene or build atmosphere, which made some sections feel a bit drab. Still, once the story picked up, the mystery became more compelling and the ending tied everything together nicely.

A cute, cozy read overall; especially if you enjoy small‑town magic, light paranormal elements, and mysteries with a whimsical edge.

Batter and Broomsticks was such a cozy, comforting listen! Rosella and Orion's latest investigation kicks off when they meet a fairy who might know where the missing magic from the amplification stones has gone, but her help comes with strings attached. Stopping a plant thief should have been simple, until they stumble onto a body and find themselves with a murder to solve. Rosella's ability to talk with animals is such a fun touch, and I love the small town feel and the charming magical creatures that keep popping up in this series. The stakes never feel too high, even with a murder at the center, and there were enough shady suspects that I wasn't sure who the culprit was until the very end. I did feel like I missed a bit of backstory jumping in so late in the series, though it was still easy to follow. The narration was excellent, with clear, distinct voices for every character, making it easy to follow along while doing chores.

Batter and Broomsticks is Book 9 in the Sugar Shack Witch Mysteries series by Danielle Garrett, with audiobook narration by Kelsey Navarro Foster.

Despite jumping in at Book 9, I had no trouble following the story. The author provides enough context for new readers while still delivering an engaging mystery for longtime fans. It was an entertaining and quick listen, with likable characters and an enjoyable storyline that kept me interested throughout.

Kelsey Navarro Foster does an excellent job with the narration, giving each character a distinct voice and bringing the story to life. Her performance added to my overall enjoyment of the audiobook.

I enjoyed this book so much that I have already purchased the earlier audiobooks and look forward to listening to the series from the beginning.

Book 4.25 ✨, audio vibes 5 ✨

This was such a fun cozy listen! With so many full cast audios making the round sometimes it’s nice to just vibe with a single narrator and Kelsey Navarro Foster did not disappoint! She brought the witchy, the animals (insane how well she did those voices) and the personality. Jumping in on book 9 did not take away from the overall enjoyment of the book even if there were some parts that probably would’ve made better sense if I’d read all of the previous books.

This was a very good mood listen, it was something short and fun to sit back and enjoy! (I say “mood listen” like I’m not always in the mood for witches, mysteries, and sleuthing)

Both Danielle Garrett’s writing and Kelsey Navarro Foster’s narrating were great and I very much enjoyed this

Oh my goodness, I just wrapped up the most charming audiobook with an amazing narrator! ‘Batter and Broomsticks' by Danielle Garrett, a truly delightful dive into the world of paranormal cozy mysteries. This particular installment marks book 9 in the utterly captivating Sugar Shack Witch Mystery series. Even though I was a total newbie to the series, jumping in at this point didn't hinder my enjoyment one bit. I was completely hooked and absolutely adored it from the very beginning. The whodunit aspect was brilliantly done;. I truly had no clue who the culprit was, and definitely not who I'd have ever suspected! Now I'm practically vibrating with anticipation for the next book . I need more of this magical world!

This has your classic rom com mystery components - a detective, a baker and a small-town murder mystery - with the fun twist of there being magic.

This is the 5th book in the series, which I only learned when I marked this as currently reading on Goodreads. It's easy to follow, and there's no convoluted back story that I struggled to keep up with. But I really want to go back to the beginning because I'm dying to see the progression of Rosella and Orion's relationship. I *need* to see how it started! They are so cute together, I'm sure their backstory is wonderful.

Kelsey Navarro Foster narrates and she's why I requested this book in the first place. She is, of course, delightful here.

Thank you to NetGalley and Tantor Media for the ALC.

Batter and Broomsticks was a delightful cozy fantasy from the Sugar Shack Witch Mystery Series. This was my first book in the series, which I think took away a little from the immersive world and character development that had already been established.

The main character, Rosella, is tasked with figuring out who has been stealing special herbs. As she and Orion dive deeper into the investigation, the mystery becomes more complex, uncovering more secrets, suspects, and lies along the way.

Overall, I thought this was a fun and enjoyable read. I imagine I would have enjoyed it even more if I had read the previous books in the series. As a standalone, I did wish there had been a little more development of Rosella and Orion and their relationship.

That said, I will absolutely be reading more from this author! I love an easy, entertaining read, and cozy fantasy mysteries are definitely my kind of book.
